By Adekunle Sulaimon

World football body FIFA has announced its plan to pay prize money directly into the players’ accounts of the winners of the ongoing women’s World Cup in Australia/New Zealand.

FIFA Secretary-General, Fatma Samoura, confirmed this in a viral video on social media saying the policy change is due to unpaid allowance issues involving Nigeria’s Super Falcons.

The Falcons head coach, Randy Waldrum, had earlier revealed that some players were owed “per diem and bonuses” from two years ago.

The development caused a stir and almost affected the preparation of the Super Falcon players with most of them insisting on missing the training to protest their unpaid bonuses.

However, in the video, Samoura acknowledged that “things have been tough” for the Falcons.

Waldrum not afraid of potential England clash
She added that FIFA for the first time would monitor that match bonuses got to the players directly.

“I know that things have been tough. We have to face the realities of Nigeria. It pains me a lot. It is because of you (the Super Falcons) that, for the first time, the prize money has been ring-fenced in the history of FIFA to ensure that it goes to you,” the FIFA secretary-general said.

Let us never forget that Nigeria is the colonial creation of the white man. The ethnic nationalities that constitute Nigeria were ambushed into a colonial project called Nigeria in 1914. All the ethnic nationalities have had over 100 years to assess if Nigeria works for them and it is their right of self determination to decide if they want to continue being part of Nigeria, or opt for independence

I believe that Nigeria has been an unmitigated disaster and the Igbo nation should seek independence. Nigeria should give the Igbo nation referendum for them to decide if they want to remain part of Nigeria, no enforced unity ever ends well. Igbos have fought war, they have agitated and shown Nigeria and the wider world that a significant population amongst them want independence from Nigeria

Assuming the South East is what gains independence from Nigeria as Biafra, what happens next? Igbo leaders will hold a constitutional conference to draw up a long term political and economic plan, as well as the terms of engagement with Nigeria and the wider world

Nobody is saying it will be easy in the beginning, but I trust my Igbo people, they will make a success of it

I laugh when people say the South East is landlocked, far from it. A lot of people dont know that that there is no land between Abia State and the ocean. Azumini blue River runs from Abia to the ocean, demarcating Rivers State and Akwa Ibom. River ports can also be built at Oguta, in addition to the one at Onitsha

The South East is so close the ocean, and has many tributaries and waterways running from it to the ocean that it is virtually impossible for them not to have full access to the ocean with the right investment
This is just like Niger, Mali or Guinea claiming they are not landlock because of the River Niger.

Dankaka said she was accused by some comissioners of the FCC of job racketeering, involving the recruitment of some persons in a manner that was not in tandem with extant laws.

According to Dankaka, some persons in the commission “forged her signature to give fake letters of employment”.

Company commentary – MTN reported that the Central Bank of Nigeria’s recent forex operations changes caused a significant 60% movement in the exchange rate to N756.24/US$ by the end of June 2023.

Although the immediate impact resulted in unrealized forex losses for H1, the company believes that the liberalization of the forex regime and removal of the fuel subsidy will attract international capital, drive foreign direct investment, and have a net positive effect on their longer-term outlook.
The EBITDA margin was not materially impacted in H1 due to the nature of their tower contracts, but the full exchange rate impact is expected to be felt in H2.
A 10% exchange rate movement could directly reduce the EBITDA margin by approximately 1.3 percentage points.
The impact on finance costs in H2 will depend on further exchange rate variations during that period.
See more commentary here
Insights: The unification of the exchange rate had an adverse effect on MTN’s results, leading to a significant paper loss of N131.4 billion.

Although these losses are yet to be realized, accounting regulations necessitate their recognition due to the potential likelihood of them materializing.
Despite this challenge, MTN’s report highlighted robust operating profit margins, indicating the strength of its business model.
