Thewhizzkid1: I didn't get what u guys said about nerves being both sympathetic and parasympathetic at the same time. I thought an autonomic nerve can either be parasympathetic or sympathetic. For example, I thought a nerve like the vagus nerve (CN X) is strictly parasympathetic and the nerves of the thoracolumbar (T1 - L2) portion of d spinal cord are strictly sympathetic. Secondly, I read that splanchnic nerves are the nerves that both carry afferent and efferent autonomic fibres to the viscera. Are these nerves part of the normal autonomic nerves or they are special nerves on their own? cc: ikevin, ebsuguy. you are correct talking abt thoracolumbar outflow (sympathetic) and craniosacral outflow (parasympathetic). Yet, sympathetic can return into its source to enter skeletal nerves to supply sweat glands, cutaneous blood vessels. Am just trying to clarify the fact that nerves can carry more than one fiber. But regarding splanchnic nerves, they usually carry more than one fiber to an organ. |
Education › Re: The medical students and aspirants thread by ikevin(m): 10:56pm On Feb 05, 2016 |
ebsuguy: ikevin is right as to their termination-the viscera i.e the organs. The sympathetic NS has a thoracolumbar spinalcord origin while the Parasympathetic NS originate from nuclei in the brain and Sacral region of the cord.Hence, they do not have a common origin. Rather what ikevin said about the nerve bundle is correct. Both the sympathetic fibers and the parasympathetic fibers run in the same nerve to supply the organs. nice one brof. Your inputs on the page are on point man. |
Education › Re: The medical students and aspirants thread by ikevin(m): 10:01pm On Feb 05, 2016 |
ebsuguy: Simply put, they are autonomic nerves arising from the spinal cord that do not relay in the paravertebral ganglion. alright. The term splanchnic refers to viscera (internal organs). Now splanchnic nerves refers to nerves concerned with viscera. In the nerves, there are autonomic fibers ( parasympathetic and sympathetic) and viscera afferent (sensory) fibers. All these help in passing stimulation to and fro the viscera. Regarding ur questn abt origins. From my knowledge so far, the term NERVE is not a single entity, it is like a passageway, it contains different fibers, so a nerve can contain sympathetic, parasympathetic and somatic fibers all about their differential functions. I am open to counter info, . |

AbuadStudent: you totally nailed it! That guy's question had me thinking seriously. Although what you just said is basically the tubuloglomerular feedback. But this basically occurs when there is a decreased Gfr. As to How just "Hyponatremia" would stimululate a decrease in GFR directly is still unclear to me..which led to my initial confusion. dope answer tho! yep very dope answer. Also, the resultant decrease ECF volume due to loss of osmotically-active substance (Na) would lead to low blood pressure which induces the JG-cells of the afferent arterioles to secrete renin which also brings about the renin-angiotensin mechanism. My mind didn't even go towards macula densa while posting the question. He just pasted it on my mind. Nice. |

Thewhizzkid1: 1. After being thrown from a motorcycle moving at high speed, a 16-year-old female was found to have a paralyzed right pectoralis major muscle. Which set of movements at the shoulder joint would be found greatly weakened? Abduction and extension Abduction and lateral rotation Adduction and flexion Lateral rotation and extension 2.After a jarring blow to the left anterior shoulder region, a young field hockey player was told by an examining physician that she had a muscle tear that resulted directly from the superolateral distraction of a fractured coracoid process. Which muscle was torn? Deltoid Pectoralis major Pectoralis minor Serratus anterior Subclavius 3. During a fight a man is stabbed in the lateral chest beneath the right arm. The wound does not enter the chest cavity. Physical examination reveals that the vertebral (medial) border of the patient's scapula projects posteriorly and is closer to the midline on the injured side. On return visit the patient complains that he cannot reach as far forward (such as to reach for a door knob) as he could before the injury. The nerve injured which caused these symptoms is the: axillary long thoracic musculocutaneous radial suprascapular 4. While observing a mastectomy on a 60-year- old female patient, a medical student was asked by the surgeon to help tie off the arteries that supply the medial side of the breast. The artery that gives origin to these small branches is the: Internal thoracic Musculophrenic Posterior intercostal Superior epigastric Thoracoacromial 5.A woman with breast cancer subsequently develops metastases in her vertebral column. The most direct route for spread of the tumor to the vertebral column was via: branches of the cephalic vein branches of the lateral thoracic vein branches of the thoracoacromial veins lymphatic vessels draining into the axilla branches of the intercostal veins 6. A man suffers a penetrating wound through the anterior axillary fold, with resulting damage to one of the main terminal branches of the brachial plexus. Among the effects is a significant weakening of flexion of the elbow. One or more other effects to be expected is (are): a)Loss of cutaneous sensation on the tips of several fingers b)Only loss of cutaneous sensation on the anterolateral surface of the forearm c)Only weakening of flexion at the shoulder Weakening of flexion at the shoulder and d) loss of cutaneous sensation on the anterolateral surface of the arm e)Weakening of flexion at the shoulder and loss of cutaneous sensation on the anterolateral surface of the forearm 7. A person sustains a left brachial plexus injury in an auto accident. After initial recovery the following is observed: 1) the diaphragm functions normally, 2) there is no winging of the scapula, 3) abduction cannot be initiated, but if the arm is helped through the first 45 degrees of abduction, the patient can fully abduct the arm. From this amount of information and your knowledge of the formation of the brachial plexus where would you expect the injury to be: axillary nerve posterior cord roots of plexus superior trunk suprascapular nerve. Good night u all. Zellie I've tried sending the textbooks but I haven't been able to get them through. The files are large and they don't upload for me to send. Also wishing aspirants success so we can fully welcome you guys on board. Now to my question. Sodium is not really a stimulus for the release of Aldosterone (Potassium has a strong effect). What would actually explain the release of Aldosterone from the zona glomerulosa of the Adrenal cortex in relation to severely reduced Sodium concentration in the ECF (blood plasma). |

datguru: I have a prophecy....
I was in a trance and I saw Buhari feeling disappointed with himself because he is not fulfilling his promises to Nigerians. He has good intentions but the cabal around him won't let him.
All of a sudden he has serious problem with his party men and the cabal. He then saw that his time is up and if he eventually dies, the same cabal will take over.
He then decided to call for a referendum and divide the country for good no matter how much you hate someone especially Buhari who doesn't even know you directly. You shouldn't wish someone dead, you lack power over life and should wish someone the opposite. Yet, Nigerian youths continue to disappoint. |

Although they seem unalloyed to a good extent. The more you look, the less you see. Everything like someone said on this thread is a mere magic for the Nigerian mob to feast on. The real issue is to force these guys to develop Nigeria . Being a while "medusa", felt I should holla.m. |

laryom1: I missed this... But let me add spices
The production of NADPH is to actually reduce the oxidized glutathione being produced in the RBC, catalyzed by Glutathione reductase. Product of the reaction actually removes H2O2 as radicals produced by the dissociation of H2O2 cannot be removed singly and it is also catalyzed by glutathione peroxidase(selenocysteine active site). If that doesn't happen as in the deficiency of G6PDH, accumulation of H2O2 in the cell would have an oxidative effect on the cell membrane. nice additive boss. |
