Family / Re: Why AIPP Allows Canada Immigration With Low Requirement & Relatively Low Cost by iknowexperts: 4:34pm On Mar 19, 2021
(Cont)

From the report above that is a total of 229,405 immigrants in five cities leaving just 112,775 immigrants for the remaining two hundred and eighty four cities.

In other words, 67% of immigrants chose just 5 cities. While 284 cities had to make do with the remaining 33 percent of the immigrants.

Now, here is why this is a problem for other less popular cities. And why there is intense competition for foreign workers in Canada

It is well known there is a declining birth rate and an aging population in Canada. As a result there is a decline in the number of locals who can enter into the workforce and grow the economy.

This is why Canada depends on immigrants to make up for the shortfall in workers available to take up jobs.

Figures released by the IRCC in the 2020 Annual Report to Parliament on Immigration show that:

The Canadian workforce is comprised of 26 percent of immigrants. This is up from 23.8 percent in 2016. This means 1 out of every 4 worker in Canada is an immigrant. One of the highest in the world

You can read the report here: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/corporate/publications-manuals/annual-report-parliament-immigration-2020.html

Back to what we were saying: as we have seen in the immigration report for above, more than half of the immigrants are concentrated in only 5 out of 289 cities.

This causes a problem for other smaller and less popular cities. Because they cannot attract enough qualified foreign workers to come in and work and grow their economy.

To overcome this, the IRCC allowed each Province to float their own provincial immigration program. The aim is to make it easy and quick for foreigners to immigrate to these provinces.

Right now each of the 13 provinces in Canada have their Provincial Nominee Programs.

We have the:

* British Colombia Provincial Nominee Program BC PNP

* Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program MPNP

* Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program SINP

* The immigration program for the Province of Quebec

* Etc

These PNP programs can be a fast and less expensive way to immigrate to Canada depending on the stream you choose.

And many Indians and Filipinos including Nigerians and other nationals are taking advantage of them.

But still not a lot of people can afford the funds and meet the requirements for the above PNP programs.

However there is an immigration program by the 4 states that make up the Atlantic province of Canada that is allowing foreigners to:

* Immigrate within 6 months after application

* Take on skilled jobs even in regulated occupations like medicine, engineering, nursing etc

* Low proof of funds requirements – $3,240 CAD if you’re going alone. $6,825 CAD for a family of 5, less than $9,000 CAD for a family of 7)

* Low IELTs requirements of CLB 4 (four) points
Job on arrival

Accomodation even before you leave your contry
Low education requirements (minimum secondary school certificate)

* Open work permit for your spouse that allows him/her work for almost any employer in any sector in Canada

* Free settlement plan (note: NOT free accommodation)
Certificate of Permanent Residency (COPR)

* Plus other benefits

The name of this program is “Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP).

Why is Atlantic Canada... a well developed province with one of the highest per capita income in North America... making it so easy, relatively cheap and fast for foreigners to immigrate into Canada?

1. Census figures for both 2011 and 2016 show that Atlantic Canada experienced the weakest population growth in the country

while national population grew by 5%. Atlantic Canada grew by only 1 percent (source: St Mary’s University, Canada; and Statistics Canada)

2. Finn Poschmann, former President of the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council (APEC) had this to say: Employers throughout the provinces “need staff at all skill level. Whether it is in the seafood sector, at Tech firms, in sales…”

The good thing for the Atlantic province is that majority of the foreigners who have immigrated under the AIPP end up staying in the province for a long time.

Immigration, Refuges and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reviewed the AIPP in the period starting from when it was launched (March 2017) to the end of 2019-2020 fiscal year.

They wanted to see if the pilot program was working as intended, to help grow the economy and meet labor market demand. Below are their findings:

* 5,590 respondents who had immigrated through the AIP were surveyed
* Most were still in the province 2 years later
* Only 3 percent said they do not plan to stay in the province
* AIPP retention rates were higher than other pathways as at the time of the survey.
* They main reason given by those who wanted to stay are:
- they liked the community
- the cost of living was affordable
- they liked their job

Because of the success of the AIPP program, the Canadian government has committed to make it a permanent immigration program.

Family / Why AIPP Allows Canada Immigration With Low Requirement & Relatively Low Cost by iknowexperts: 4:25pm On Mar 19, 2021
...this program is also "family-immigration supportive" and offers Permanent Residency
======================

Canada immigration can be expensive, complicated and take a long time.

This is because the immigration system is setup to attract mostly those with High Proof of Funds, High Educational requirement, high IELTs score – and rightly so.

However, there is a unique situation that is allowing intending immigrants with a minimum of secondary school certificate, ELTs score of 4 (four) points and above get their Permanent Residency (PR)

You will also have a job on arrival; and accommodation even before you leave Nigeria – through the settlement plan by the Canadian government.

Another advantage is that it costs less than other PR offering programs like the PNP and Express Entry programs, and 80 percent of the immigration application are processed within 6 months.

Here is why this is possible:

There are 289 cities in Canada according to the World Population Review (WPR).

But when foreigners apply to go to Canada, they choose the popular cities like Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and other big and well known cities.

From the immigration statistics released for 2019 by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada IRCC: of the 342,180 Permanent Residents welcomed to Canada:

117,720 chose Toronto
40,020 chose Vancouver
34,620 chose Montreal
19,625 chose Calgary
16,420 chose Edmonton

Below is a screenshot of the summary of the report by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) news, one of biggest immigration news platform in Canada

Thank you so much for this guide. Really informative. I would like to ask the following questions:

1. Does a married woman who wants to apply for the standard passport need to do modification 9f NIN fields

2. How long does it take to have ones change of name published on a news paper after paying for it.

3. Assuming a married woman actually needs to modify the NIN fields, how long does this process usually take altogether?

You're welcome.

To your questions

1. Yes. If she changed her name after marriage

2. Doesn't take long. A few days after submitting your requirements

3. I can't say exactly. But it takes time. Can be over a month

This is really helpful. Thanks
Please what's the cost of doing a fresh passport and a renewal?
Also, do I need to have NIN for renewal?

You're welcome.

Cost of fresh passport and renewal are the same.

For the enhanced epassport (NIN required) its 26,000. For standard passport its 17,800 (without NIN).
These cost is for 32 pages, 5 years passport

NIN requirement for renewal depends on the office you are doing the passport.

Lagos, Rivers, Kano and NIS HQ, Abuja offices require NIN
Family / How To Get LGA / State Of Origin Certificate For International Passport by iknowexperts: 2:54pm On Dec 04, 2020
One of the requirements for international passport is state of origin certificate or LGA of origin certificate

In the NIS website, this requirement is called "letter of identification from Local Gornment/state of origin or residence..."

I have come across more than a few persons who are confused about what exactly this document is, and how to obtain it.

The state of origin certificate, or specifically LGA certificate of origin is given to prove that you are from a particular place.

It is mostly given based on the LGA the parents (mostly the father) originate from.
It doesn't have a limited validity period which means when you get it once, you can use it indefinitley.

To receive the certificate, you will need to go to the LGA secretariat your parent or parents are from.
You might not need to travel down to your LGA if there is a liaison office around your location.
LGAs in Nigeria have their liaison offices in Lagos and Abuja.

How to get the LGA certificate of origin

Generally, most LGAs follow the procedure below:

1. You will need 2 copies of a recent passport photograpgh.
2. You will be given a form where you fill your personal details.
3. Next is payment at a designated LGA account. Some places accept cash.

After payment your certificate will printed, signed and issued to you.

Below is a LGA certificate of origin for one of the local governments in Nigeria

International passports have evolved.

There was a time when one family could have one passport. All you need do was to to take a family photo and attach it to the passport booklet. And the whole family could use that one passport.

Now things are different.

Even babies who are 1 month old are required to have a separate passport.

This is in line with the ICAO recommendations which says "Children shall not be included in an adults passport; each child, including newborn infants, must be issued with his or her own MRCTD.

(MRCTD means Machine Readable Conventional Travel Document - it is essentially an electronic passport.
An electronic passport is one which the details of the passport holder is stored inside an electronic chip (just like your sim card) and attached to the passport booklet.
The holder,s details can obtained by scanning this electronic chip).

More than a few parents will want their child(ren) to have an international passport.

We will first of all start with the requirements before outlining the procedures. Note that this covers minors from 0 to 17 years of age.

However, requirements and procedure for adults are similar but for a few exceptions.
Detailed step by step procedure for adults is one of the major things I talk about in the "Fresh Passport Guide"

Requirements to get International Passport as a Minor

1. NIN slip for baby/minor (Required for Enhanced epassport)
2. Passport photograph of minor to be signed by parents at the back
3. Birth certificate of child (issued by NPC if he/she was born in Nigeria)
4. NIN slip of father and/or mother (or evidence of Nigerian citizenship)
5. Consent letter from both/either parents (can be handwritten)
7. 2 passport photographs
8. Acknowledgement slip
9. Payment slip
10. Online application form

If the child is adopted, Court Order and Letter of approval from State Ministry of Women and Child Development is required.

Requirement nos. 8, 9 and 10 are gotten from the NIS portal

How to proceed

Go to the immigration portal ==> https://portal.immigration.gov.ng/passport/epassport

• Select Standard E-pasport and begin application.
• Fill out all necessary information till the end.
NIN is compulsory if you want Enhanced epassport (Registration is free)
• Make payment online or at the bank.
You will be given an interview date after payment confirmation. However you can go before this date.
• Proceed to the pasport office you chose with the requirements
• Head straight to the Servicom desk or office. They will direct you to the offices to take your documents to.
• Its possible to carry out capturing same day. If not you will be given a slip with a date to return
• Go along with originals of your documents to be on the safe side because they might ask to sight it.

For standard passport, the price is lesser for minors.
Costs 10,750 ( application charges plus address verification charges) plus service charges.
See second screenshot below for breakdown. You might want to zoom in

The Enhanced epassport cost the same both for minors and adults

The above prices are for 32 years 5 years passport.

As per international convention, minors are not allowed to get more than 5 years passport because of their rapidly changing physical features.

Few people actually know there's standard & enhanced. I also didn't know. I was shocked when someone told me she did her own 15k!. Then I recollected the first time I went to the immigration office in abk & saw one possibly illiterate woman shelling out 60k to those greedy rogues called immigration officers for a standard passport Information is truly power.

You're very correct man!

International passport is something many people don't have much information about. And they get exploited because of that lack of information.

Imagine paying 60k for a 15k passport (or lets just say the woman paid for the 26k enhanced passport).
Then imagine doing this for wife and child or even children. Thats 180k. For something that shouldn't be more than 80k.

The thing is, if many people knew, they wouldn't mind sacrificing a day or 2 out of their schedule to go to the passport office and get things done.

However, personally I do not see anything wrong in applicants paying someone to help especially if they dont have time. But the thing is, the less you know the more you will pay.

Whether DIY or someone is running the process,

a least applicants should acquaint themself with the knowledge of the process so in case of anything, they will at least know their Enrollment No. But thats story for another time sha

Cheers!

Family / How To Apply For International Passport Withiout NIN by iknowexperts: 10:07am On Nov 29, 2020
Its simple really.

Around 3 weeks ago I saw a post by a fellow Nairalander about how he had to forfeit the 26,000 he paid for international passport and start a fresh application.

He had issue with his NIN. And he decided to apply for passport without NIN since it will be faster, as against correcting the NIN issue - which might take some weeks - before applying for the passport.

He needed the passport urgently.

He started with the normal online registration. And also paid the 25,000 plus 1000 bank charges online. Next he gathered the requirements and headed to Ikoyi passport office.

It was there that he got the bad news. NIN is a compulsory requirement for the type of passport he paid for.

His options were to correct the error in his NIN before continuing with his application.

Or forfeit payment and start a fresh application at another office which issue out the passport that does not require NIN.

He chose the latter.

There are several reasons why an applicant might want a passport without NIN:

It might be because:

• Its costs less.
• You might not have NIN
• Or just like the person in the story, you might have NIN issues for example Date of birth which might be difficult to correct as at the time you need your passport.
• Or any other reason best know to the applicant.

If that is the case, how do you apply for passport without NIN?

Like I said, its simple.

The passport for which NIN is complusory is the enhanced epassport.

The passport which NIN is not a compulsory requirement is called the Standard passport. This is the one you will be applying for.

But the thing is, in the NIS portal, when you are applying for the passport they do not ask you if you want the standard passport or the enhanced epassport. Neither do they tell you which passport office issue out what type of passport.

So if you do not know about the difference between types of passport, you might not know which type you are getting.

I'll explain.

The way to know is by looking out for the validity of the passport in each passport office.

The validity period of the standard passport is 5 years while for the enhanced passport you have both for 5 years and 10 years validity.

Go to the NIS portal select Standard E-passport and start your passport application normally.
Here is the link ==> https://portal.immigration.gov.ng/passport/estandard

When you get to processing state, select a state of your choice. Next choose processing office if there are more than one office for that state.

Under "passport booklet type" select 64 pages (don't worry, you can come back and change it if it is the 32 pages you want)

Next click on "Validity type."

If the passport office you chose issue out Standard passport, you will only see "5 years" just like in the first attached picture below.

If the passport office issue Enhanced epassport you will see both "5 years" and "10 years" just like in the second picture.

To even confirm further continue your application to the next page and you will see that the price for standard passport is 17,000 (3rd picture) and the cost for enhanced epassport is 25,000 (4th picture) excluding bank charges.

Note that the above prices are for 32 pages booklet

This amount is in line with what you will find in the NIS website here ==> https://immigration.gov.ng/standard-passport/

And here ==> https://immigration.gov.ng/enhanced-epassport/

Scroll down till you get to the amount.

So, if it is the standard passport you need, you follow these steps till you find a passport office at a convenient location.

This process is a little cumbersome and time consuming though.

However, when I filled my own passport application form online... I clicked on all 41 passport offices to know which offices issue out enhanced epassport and which offices issue out standard passport that does not require NIN.

I outlined all of the respective offices and the type of passport they issue in chapter 2 of the Fresh Passport Guide.

Its a step by step Do It Yourself guide for applying and getting a fresh international passport.

Visit my profile by clicking on my name to see how to get the guide.

Hope this helped.

Cheers!

In the next post, we will talk about how to apply for a passport for your baby or for your child under the age of 18.

Requirements and procedure for obtaining a Fresh international passport for married women.

1. Marriage certificate
2. NIN slip containing your new name
3. Newspaper publication
4. Sworn affidavit
5. Other documents required for all other passport applicants

You will use all this to apply

Below are the steps for getting the passport.

Step 1: Obtain marriage certificate.

Getting the marriage certificate is simple. It can be gotten at the registry, church or any other approved institution.

Step 2 and 3: a sworn affidavit for a change of name and a Newspaper publication for the same.

These steps go hand in hand because after getting the sworn affidavit, you will need to do a newsapaper publication.

You can begin by getting the sworn affidavit. This can be done at the registery of any high court near you. Next is to get a newspaper publication announcing your change of name.

You have to submit the following documents for sworn affidavit and newspaper publication.

Information about your current name
New name
Gender
The reason for the change
A copy of your marriage certificate
A means of identification showing your current name
(e.g drivers license, ID card , certificate etc)
Passport photograph

Marriage certificate, sworn affidavit and newspaper publication (the page of change of name) - you will be needing them almost everywhere else.

Newspaper publication costs around 5,000 while sworn affidavit costs between 200 to 2,000

Step 4. Modify your new name on your NIN slip or Register for a new NIN Slip if you dont have

The next document you would need is a National Identity Slip or Card. Especially if you want to get the Enhanced passport.

So, if you haven’t registered for one before, you should do so. But if you have, you would need to apply to modify your existing details.

To register for a new NIN, you need a valid means of identification (drivers license, voters card etc) and you need to fill the pre-enrolment form on the NIMC website
Pre-enrolment form ==> https://penrol.nimc.gov.ng/loginForm.tpl.html.php

Changing your Name on your National Identity Slip or Card in Nigeria

To change your name on your national identity slip or card, you would need to pay a modification service fee. It costs ₦500 to change most fields, except the ‘Date of Birth’ field which costs ₦15,000.

Payment Process for Modification to your National Identity Slip or Card

Go to www.remita.net to pay the modification service fee.

Select ‘Pay FGN and State TSA’ and then choose ‘FGN: Federal Government of Nigeria’

In the field that says ‘Who do you want to pay?’, type in ‘National Identity Management Commission’

In the ‘Name of Service/Purpose’ field, select ‘Modification of any Other Field Other than DOB – Per Transaction’

If you are updating multiple fields, you can choose ‘National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Fees‘.

Fill in the other fields and click on ‘Submit’.

Pay the fee with any of the available methods of payment. Take note of your RRR fornqhen you might need it.

Print out a confirmation slip to take with you to the NIMC centre.

Documents Needed for Modification to your National Identity Slip or Card

• Filled form – this would be given to you at the NIMC office. The NIMC says this form is free, however, officials in some centres charge ₦50 to ₦200

• Letter of application for the change of name.
If you're based in Lagos, this should be directed to the ‘National Identity Management Commission, Alausa, Ikeja.
If in another state, I guess the letter will be directed NIMC headquaryers in that state.

• Sworn affidavit

• Newspaper publication

• Marriage certificate

• Confirmation of payment of modification service fee.

After making the necessary payments and gathering the required documents, go to the nearest NIMC centre for the final process of change of name.

Getting the Nigerian International Passport

After getting your NIN which reflects your new name, Newspaper publication and sworn afiidavit,

you can now gather the other requirements for Nigeria international passport and begin your online application at the Nigeria Immigration Service portal

Family / How To Apply For And Get Fresh International Passport As A Married Woman by iknowexperts: 12:18pm On Nov 28, 2020
Applying for the Nigerian international passport as a woman who has changed her surname due to marriage can be a cumbersome process. And it is a process many applicants are unfamiliar with. As a result they spend extra at the hands of corrupt officials.

Outlined in this thread are the steps for applying and getting a fresh international passport as a married woman.

Before we begin...

Did you know just 12 years ago... married women were required to get their husbands written consent before they could apply for Nigeria International passport?

February 2008, Dr Iyalla-Amadi wife of late popular author Elechi Amadi wanted to replace her international passport. Among the list of documents she was required to attach to her formal application was a letter of consent from her husband.

She reasoned with and protested against the NIS, that the policy was against her fundamental himan right as an adult. but they wouldn't listen.

Since change can start with one person, she took them to court, and in June 2009, she won in a Port harcourt Federal high court. Accorfing to the judge such policy has no place in the 21st century.

Because of her, women who changed their surname due to marriage do not need to show a consent letter from their husbands.

They need only need to show marriage certificate and other proofs of change of name due to marriage. Together with the regular passport requirements.

LightOnScams:

This will be hard.

The other guy said he never used such, that it's Standard E-Passport.

Is there a difference between E-Passport and other passports?

Forgive me if I sound ignorant, I'm actually ignorant of the whole thing.

Thank you.

smiley Its understandable.

This whole "types of Nigeria International passport" thing can be confusing. It used to confuse me too.

I'll briefly try to break it down.

Many people don't know this but there are actually 5 types of Nigeria international passport:

1. Official passport for government officials (not all of them though)
2. Diplomatic passport for diplomats and their protocol
3. Seafarers passport for Seamen.
4. Pilgrims passport for pilgrims of any religious affiliation who are travelling for pilgrimage

And finally,

5. The Standard epassport.

This is the one all Nigerians are eligible for by right. And this is what is commonly referred to as the Nigerian International passport. Because it is the official travel document for all Nigerian citizens

And this is the passport type that is being talked about in this thread

The Standard epassport is further divided into 2:

a) Standard passport (notice that there is no "e" before the passport)
b) Enhanced epassport

The Enhanced epassport is an upgraded version of the Standard passport. It is linked to your NIN and BVN and has more security features.

Also, it is more expensive. Costs 26k vs around 17k for 32 pages booklet with 5 years validity

Nevertheless, whether you are going for the Enhanced epassport, or the Standard passport...

rest assured that you can use either of both to travel abroad. And you will mever be discriminated against irredpective of the passport type you carry.

Hope this explanation helped.

And to your question, just like @Oggg said, you need a guarantor for fresh passport application.

Its when you are doing renewal that you no longer require a guarantor

Cheers!

Travel / 6 Random Facts About The Nigeria International Passport by iknowexperts: 7:51pm On Nov 25, 2020
Many people want to travel abroad but do not yet have the Nigeria international passport.

Many others have the Nigeria passport but have never ventured ouside Nigeria. They use it as ID card for now, till time comes when they can finally find their way out of Nigeria.

Some persons have the Nigeria passport and actively use it for travelling.

Whichever category you belong, here are 6 random facts about the Nigeria passport you might find interesting.

1. Before 2009, a married woman had to get the permission of her husband before applying for a Nigeria passport.

Thanks to Dr Priye Iyalla-Amadi (wife of popular author Elecho Amadi) this policy no longer holds.

She challenged the Nigeria Immigration Service in court and won the case on June 2009. Now married women who want a passport only need marriage certificate and other proofs of change of name (together with the usual passport requirements)

2.There are 5 different types of Nigeria international passport

Types of passport is something that used to confuse not only me, but also a lot of people. There are actually 5 different types:

i. Official passports for some government officials due to their high position and the duty they perform.
ii. Diplomatic passport for Nigeria diplomats.
iii. Seafarers Passport for Seamen
iv. Pilgrims passport for people travelling to other country for religious pilgrimage, And
v. Standard epassport: This is the official Nigeria international travel document all Nigerians qualify for by right.
And this is the one most people know as the Nigeria international passport.

Except you are a governement official; a diplomat, a seaman or a pilgrim of any religious prientation, you are only eligible for the standard epassport.

3.The standard epassport is further divided into 2 types: standard passport and enhanced epassport.

The enhnaced epassport is the new version of the Nigeria passport. It costs more than the standard passport and is linked to your BVN

It has more security features and has a category with 10 years validity. Nevertheless, both standard and enhanced epassports can be used to travel abroad smiley

4. Nigeria passport can give you visa free access or visa on arrival to 47 countries (as at June 2020).

This is on the condition that you can show evidence of proof of funds, return ticket, or/and accommodation

Some of these countries include: Barbados, Cambodia, ECOWAS countries, Iran etc.

None of these countries are in Europe though. Dubai/UAE is not in the list also. Although it is easy to visit Dubai from Nigeria.

5. Persons under the age of 18 cannot get passport with more than 5 years validity.

This is in line with the international Civil Aviation Organization ICAO recommendations.
Because it is considered that minors have rapidly changing physical features due to growth.
At some point the resemblance between them and the picture in their passport will diminish

6. Your passport is considered to have expired starting from 6 months to the end of its validity date.

Some countries will not grant you visa if you have 6 months or less left on your passport. Also they wont grant you visa if you have just a few pages left on your passport.

One of the reason that might be behind this policy is that many countries allow you stay in their country for between 3 to 6 months after your visa has expired.

If they grant you a visa when your passport's validity is less than 6 months, it is possible to legally overstay your visa. And when it is time to travel back, your passport will now have exceeded its validity date.

And you cannot board an international flight with an expired passport except maybe through deportation. You see the conundrum?

Hope you enjoyed this.

Hi, congratulations.

I have a question though. The guarantor's form, must the guarantor also have an International passport??

I'll appreciate a reply from you guys.

I'm assuming you're applying for a fresh passport.

Yes. Your guarantor must have a valid international passport.

Because one of the requirements you will be submitting together with your guarantor form is... photocopy of the datapage of your guarantor's international passport.

The price is not that different, unless you want an immigration official to "run" the process for you as is the norm.

I know of someone who did his by himself on August at Ikoyi office.

Here is the break down of what he paid:

Online payment with ATM card 25,000
Bank charge 1,000
Stamping of guarantor's form in court 500

And it is a straight forward process.

He got the 32 pages booklet with 5 years validity.

If you want someone to do it for you, of course you will be charged higher. Maybe an extra 10 to 25 thousand.

Whatever be case, acquaint yourself with the process. Because the less you know, the more you will be charged at the immigration office
Travel / HCPC Registration For UK Immigration. Therapist Shares Experience by iknowexperts: 12:41pm On Sep 24, 2020
HCPC means Health and Care Professions Council. They are one of the regulatory bodies for some health professionals in the UK.

If you must immigrate to the UK,
and be qualified to work in any of the health professions listed below,
you must first of all be licensed by the HCPC

The professions/occupations are:

Biomedical scientist
Radiographers
Clinical psycologists
Speech and language therapist
Paramedics
Occupational therapists
Dieticians
Physiotherapists
And 8 other occupations.

Out of the 15 occupations regulated by the HCPC,
6 are eligible to enjoy the new, cheaper and fast track health and care visa (UKHC visa),
because the UK are really in need of workers there.

UKHC visa was launched 4th of August 2020.

Some people get confused if they should register for the HCPC before getting to the UK or after they have immigrated.

Also, some people do not know of the process

The experience shared by the therapist below answers these questions to a great extent

My experience when applying for HCPC registration

Any health care professional looking to work in the UK must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to be eligible. This can be a daunting process but honestly doesn’t have to be.

I am a Speech Language Therapist who applied in 2018 and I had a relatively smooth experience and want to share some tips with you.

This is by no means a ’how to’ guide but rather my experience and what worked for me. I can’t take any responsibility for whether or not you are successful in your application because I am not an expert but I do hope that my experience can give you a bit more insight.

Firstly, don’t believe everything you hear. Research the facts and ask people who have made successful applications. Did you know that you don’t have to have a job to apply for your HCPC registration? I have had so many people ask me about this.

Applying for your HCPC registration should be one of the first things you start doing after deciding to move to the UK. It can take up to four months to receive your registration so keep that in mind when planning. When I applied in 2018 there was a much longer and more complicated form to complete. The form you will complete is easier to complete.

There are two application processes, one for those who qualified in the UK and one for those who qualified outside of the UK. I’m going to be discussing the application for international applicants.

The HCPC website is incredibly helpful. When you arrive on the site, start by selecting ‘international applications’. Take some time to familiarise yourself with the various documents provided.

The most important document to me, and the one I would recommend you read thoroughly is the ‘Guidance for international applicants’. This document provides you with a clear cut idea of what is required of you for each section of the application.

It is also important to consider that the HCPC are likely to contact the references you provide in your application and I would encourage you to notify the relevant people of this and ensure they respond ASAP. This will speed up your application process.

Download and read through the whole application form. You should take time to get an idea of all the things you will need and to get an idea of how much time it is going to take you.

To get all the documents together I needed about a month and a half. Some of the documents you need are reliant on other people, this is what takes time. The last page of the application form provides you with a checklist. Make sure you have completed and submitted everything on this list before sending your application off.

Tips for section 1- Your details

This section is simple enough to fill in without hassle. As your evidence (attachments you provide) you need to submit proof of identification.

I used my South African passport. It also stipulates that you submit proof of address. I was living with my parents at the time I applied and initially submitted a utility bill of my fathers along with a signed letter from him stating that I lived at his address (an affidavit).

The HCPC did not accept this and called me a few weeks after I posted my application and requested I submit different evidence. A bank statement with my name and address was sufficient.

Tips for section 2- Qualification in relevant profession

This section can take some time to complete. You will need to submit a certified copy of your degree. You will also need to download the additional ’Course information’ form from the website. This form needs to be completed by your university.

My university only completed the first table on the form and then attached my course details with the official stamp of the university. The HCPC accepted this. Obtaining these documents took time. I also had to pay a fee so I would encourage you to bear this in mind.

If you are able to, notify your course administrator or a senior staff member that you have made an application to the HCPC and let them know that they should expect an email from the HCPC requesting that they confirm your qualification (be sure to use this person’s details in your form).

My course administrator did not respond to the emails sent by the HCPC and I eventually got in touch with a senior staff member. The HCPC was so great at notifying me of this delay in my application and I corresponded with someone who took down the details of the senior lecturer and directed all future emails to her. This was then sorted out in no time.

Tips for section 3- Professional experience

Section 3 requires that you provide information on your professional experience. The HCPC is likely to contact the references you provide in this section, so again it would be a good idea to let these references know that they may be contacted by the HCPC and kindly ask them to respond as soon as they are able to.

When writing about your experience, use the standards of proficiency framework provided on the website as a guide as to what information to include.

The application form also requires that you provide information from your employer/ supervisor on a separate sheet to supplement what you have written.

The form I used in 2018 had a section for this to be done (I have included a copy of this as a guide if you would like it. This specific form is no longer a requirement but may assist you in what information your supervisor/employer should provide)

Tips for section 4- Professional registration and membership

Fill in all your details regarding your professional membership (HPCSA from South Africa). There isn’t anything complex about this section.

Tips for section 5- English language proficiency

If English is your first or only language and your qualification is in English, you do not need to prove your English proficiency. If English is not your first language you will need to take an English proficiency test and provide the scores accordingly.

Tips for section 6- Paying your scrutiny fee

You should be aware that you do not get this fee back, whether you receive your registration or not. However, if you don’t receive your registration you can appeal. Follow the information provided in the form and the emails you will receive from the HCPC.

Tips for section 7- Declarations

For the character and health/ vetting and barring section, the form does not explicitly request for any specific documentation. However, I believe you should submit as much as possible. Rather have too much than too little.

To prove my health and good character I included a police clearance certificate and a letter from my doctor. This just makes the process for the HCPC that much simpler and quicker should they query your fitness to practice for any reason. Again, this is not a requirement but I do truly think it will benefit your application.

For my police clearance, I did the application at the police station but had a private courier, City Sprint, deliver it to police high commission in Pretoria and once ready they delivered it back to me.

Sending off your application

Put all documents into an envelope, do not staple any documents together. I used paper clips and Post-Its to separate the application form from the evidence but this isn’t necessary. I used DHL to courier my documents to the UK and was notified by the HCPC via email when my package arrived with them.

Remember, you don’t get any of your documentation back and it is therefore important to only submit certified copies of all documentation and no originals you might want back.

What next?

The waiting game. The HCPC will notify you once your application is received (I was notified within 24 hours of them receiving mine). If anything is missing, they are likely to contact you and ask you for it.

This happened to me with my proof of address. They emailed me about a week or two after they received my application and I called them back asking for more information. Through the process I kept in email contact and if I wanted further information I called them.

Once the application was successful I was notified via email (happy dance!) and given instructions as to how to make payment to be put onto the register.

This information comes from my own experience and is not a fully comprehensive guide. I do hope that it helps you in applying for your HCPC...

what is actually the first step to take if you want to get a job or practice your profession in the UK..that is where people get really confused..or can one just go to the nhs site and start applying for jobs?

No you can't just go to the NHS site and start applying for jobs.

You must first be certified fit to practise in the UK by the relevant professional body.

Each profession has a body that regulates it and licenses its practitioners.
This is true not only for the UK but all over the world too.

Bottom line is first be fit to practise in the UK. Then start applying for jobs.

Its ok to start the job applications as soon as you start yòur professional registrations in the UK.

The goid thing is you can do these regustrations outside of the UK.

thank you so much for the info but then do we need to register with HCPC in order to practice in the Uk

HCPC regulates 15 health professions.

If your profession is one of the 15, then yes.
You need to register before you can practise in the UK
