Foreign AffairsIndia's Supreme Court Upholds Death Sentence In Delhi Rape Case by iksmoore(op): 5:41pm On Jul 09, 2018
India's Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence in the 2012 New Delhi bus gang-rape case, a crime that sparked widespread protests leading to stronger anti-rape laws.

The country's top court upheld its own judgement on the death sentence given against four men who had fatally gang raped a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, known as Nirbhaya, on a moving bus in New Delhi.
"There is no material to review our order," said the three-judge bench led by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, on the review petition filed by three of the four convicts - Mukesh, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma - who had been handed the death penalty.
Badrinath Singh, the victim's father, said his daughter has "finally got justice".
Of the six people arrested for this crime, one committed suicide in prison in 2013, while a juvenile defendant was sentenced to three years in a reform facility and released in 2015.
The brutal crime had sparked widespread protests and drew international attention over violence against women in India.

PoliticsEkiti Guber:okada Riders To Experience Business Boom In My Tenure -kayode Fayemi by iksmoore(op): 9:05pm On Jul 08, 2018
The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has debunked rumour by the opposition that he will ban commercial motorcyclists operations if elected as the next governor of the state.
He said instead of putting them out of their jobs, he would create conditions that will make them improve on their operations.
According to a statement by the Director of Media and Publicity of the Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation, Wole Olujobi, Fayemi spoke at an interactive session with the commercial motorcyclists at his country home in Isan-Ekiti on Saturday, where hundreds of operators had come on a visit to solidarise with the APC candidate.
Ekiti State Chairman of Commercial Motorcyclists Association, Kunle Ashaolu, who led members from across the 16 local governments of the state, praised Fayemi for boosting their operations while he was governor between 2010 and 2014.
He said the APC candidate made unprecedented contributions to the growth of their business, which supported them to keep their families and improve on their welfare.
He said: “When all hopes of getting government jobs were lost and we opted for okada operations, you didn’t abandon us to suffer more.
“For the start, you bought 280 motorcycles for our association with registration numbers and provided us with helmets and you later added 500 pieces of tricycles and a Toyota bus.
“Much later, you added another 100 pieces of Hajue motorbikes while the present governor has never bought a tube for us but would pay N1000 to call okada operators to rallies to deceive the public that he has supporters,” he explained.

PoliticsBukola Saraki: Court Should Be Allowed To Do Their Job- President Buhari by iksmoore(op): 8:29pm On Jul 07, 2018
President Buhari has taken to his twitter account to react to acquittal of the Senate President. He said that Nigeria’s judicial system, no matter the challenges it faces, is truly working and no one should be allowed to undermine or break it.
“I have seen many instances where individuals and groups seek the destruction of the judicial institution in the foolish thinking of saving their skin, instead of going through the painstaking process of establishing their innocence.”
“In the case of the Senate President, Bukola saraki, I have seen him take the tortuous path of using the judicial process. He persevered, and in the end, the highest court of the land, the Supreme Court, says he is not guilty as charged."

“This is what I have done in the three elections in which I was cheated out, before God made it possible for me to come here the fourth time I ran for the office.”
President Buhari said Senate President journey from the lowest to the highest court of the land provides an important example that all Nigerians should emulate.

PoliticsMobile Policemen Protest Over Non Payment Of 7month Allowance. by iksmoore(op): 5:30pm On Jul 02, 2018
Hundreds of mobile policeman on Monday disrupted social economic activities in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State, while protesting against the non-payment of their allowances for seven months.
According to the aggrieved corps, who blocked the Maiduguri-Kano Highway, Ibrahim idris, Inspector General of Police (IGP), has been "selling promotion to those who have connections".
They sang songs of rebellion, chanting 'IG is corrupt!' 'IG is a thief!' 'Where are our allowances?' 'Buhari is a good man but IG has eaten our allowances!' 'Buhari must hear this!'
It was learnt that all the public schools around the Borno Police Command were forced to join their protests, abandoning their academic activities. The schools include Ramat Polytechnic, Government College, Sir Kashim Ibrahim College of Education and Umar Mustapha Arabic College.
The leader of aggrieved corps, who asked not to be named, told news men that many could no longer perform their duties as fathers.

We have about 50 squadrons here, we are all visiting mobile policemen. Can you imagine that we have not been paid our allowances for seven months? Some of our personnel here lost their children simply because they could not afford health services.
"Just go inside the commands, you would see where some of our personnel have been sleeping for months. They brought us here for special service but we have subjected to slavery here. Soldiers are receiving their monthly allowances plus three meals per day, but we don't enjoy such. We demand explanations."
They lamented that since their arrival in Borno, they had been subjected to inhumane treatment by IGP Idris.
They called on President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the IGP for its role in the corruption and backdoor promotion in the command.
"We want President to know our plight and address it," another policeman said. "We also want the President to investigate those who are buying promotion and it should be reversed."

Foreign AffairsLópez Obrador Wins Mexico's Election Promises Profound Change by iksmoore(op): 2:58pm On Jul 02, 2018
Left-wing candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador has claimed victory in Mexico's presidential election, saying "profound change" is coming.
The ex-Mexico City mayor, known by his initials Amlo, is projected to win about 53%. His rivals have conceded in a crushing defeat for the main parties.
Mr López Obrador's key pledge has been to tackle the "evil" of corruption.
He has also been highly critical of President Donald Trump and ties with the US will now be closely watched.
Relations with Washington have been hugely strained, with Mr Trump strongly criticising Mexico over trade and migration. Mr Trump has sent a tweet of congratulations.
Late on Sunday, the 64-year-old promised to respect civil liberties and said he was "not looking to construct a dictatorship, either open or hidden".
Some opponents have expressed fears that his leftist and populist policies could damage the already sluggish economy and turn Mexico into "another Venezuela", which is suffering a deep economic crisis and rampant inflation .
Hailing a "historic night", Mr López Obrador called on all Mexicans to reconcile and repeated his campaign pledge to review energy contracts for signs of corruption.

As the Fifa World Cup 2018 hits fever pitch, a Colombian man has shown the Internet what the beautiful game truly means by helping his blind and deaf friend experience their country's win over Poland.

But that did not stop him from following every movement on the pitch when Colombia beat Poland 3-0, thanks to his good friend Cesar Daza.
Daza came up with a series of unique hand gesture to describe the match his friend in real-time as they sat among a cheering crowd in a bar in the capital Bogota.

He mimics the players' position by moving Gallego's hands on a scaled-down football pitch in front of them.

There are also different gestures for penalties, corners, throw-ins and red cards.

PoliticsEnugu Government Pays Workers June Salaries Without Federal Allocation by iksmoore(op): 2:38pm On Jul 01, 2018
Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State on Saturday disclosed that his administration has paid the salaries of workers for the month of June without receiving the federal allocation.

Mr Ugwuanyi added that despite the fact that he assumed office at the time the nation’s economy was in severe recession, his administration has been regular in payment of workers’ salaries, even when 27 states could not pay.

Speaking during an endorsement rally for his re-election in 2019 by the people of the “Ancient Opi N’Ato Kingdom” in Opi, Nsukka Local Government Area, Mr Ugwuanyi attributed the successes recorded by his administration, in spite of the nation’s economic challenges, to God’s grace and the state government’s commitment to the wellbeing of the people of the state.

Recall that the monthly meeting of Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) on Wednesday, where allocations for the month of June 2018 was to be shared among the federal, states and local governments, ended in deadlock.

Speaking further, Mr Ugwuanyi, who was overwhelmed by the large turnout of people at the colourful rally, reassured that his administration will under all circumstances continue to cater for the people of the state and initiate programmes that would address their needs, saying: “since we handed Enugu State into the hands of God, we can see His hands in all we do.”
The governor thanked the people of the area for their support, solidarity and endorsement, urging them to embrace peace and unity for rapid development. He stressed that “what is paramount to us is good governance and development of the rural areas.”

Earlier in his welcome address, the President-General of Federated Opi Town Union, Sam Ugwuoti, commended Mr Ugwuanyi for his good works across the state, especially “the beautification and rehabilitation of the Opi – Nsukka road into a modern and beautiful dual-carriageway with street lights”.

Mr Ugwuoti assured the governor that the people of Opi “will continue to support you” and “assure you unreservedly that come 2019 God will still keep you there in your seat as the Governor of Enugu State to continue to shepherd the people of God.”

“Your Excellency, we assure you of our votes. Everybody here has a PVC. We shall vote for you and your team. We shall return you to the Lion Building to continue to do good,” they declared.

PoliticsNigerian Railway Boss Faces Three-month Jail Term For Contempt by iksmoore(op): 6:27am On Jun 30, 2018
The Managing Director of Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr Fidet Okhiria, has been ordered jailed for three months over contempt, a Lagos High court judge said today.
Justice Mojisola Olatoregun ordered he should be imprisoned prison following his perpetual refusal to appear in court despite several summons.
”I have looked at the various affidavit placed before the court and have examined the papers filed from both sides. The contemnor in particular continued to disobey the order of the court. Even if he did not have the notice between February, till date, he was supposed to have been guided by his lawyer. He has not given reason to disobey the court order. He treated the court order with levity. I am left with no option than to convict him.
“I hereby sentence him to three months imprisonment,” Justice Olatoregun declared
She further ordered that he should be in custody till September 25, 2018 when the case will continue.
Okhiria had through his lawyer sometime in March 2018 informed the court that he was out of the country on official assignment. The court then ordered him to show evidence of being on official assignment outside the country as he claimed.
The trial judge had on February 15, 2018 threatened to order the arrest of Mr Okhiria for his persistent refusal to appear before the court in the suit filed against him by the former employee of the Nigeria Railway Corporation, Mr Benedict O. Iheakam.

Iheakam had approached the court through his counsel, Mr Johnson Esezobo (counsel to judgement creditor) asking for an order committing to prison, the MD of the NRC,and the Company Secretary/Legal Adviser, Canise Oklahoma for alleged refusal to comply with a 14 year-old court order.
Justice Dan Abutu had in a suit FHC/L/CS/926/95 ordered Iheakam’s reinstatement and the payment of his entitlements.
Obiorah Emedolibe, secretary to the Corporation averred that “Okhiria travelled out of the country to China on official duty since February. 7,2018 as part of Federal Government team on fund sourcing for the Railway modernisation projects.”
Justice Olatoregun therefore ordered Okhiria to show evidence of the journey at the next adjourned date. But he never did.
Justice Abutu in a judgment delivered on February 18, 2003 declared that Iheakam, a Principal Technical Officer’s retirement in 1994, was unlawful, null and void.

PoliticsEkiti Guber: INEC Commissioner, Two Directors Plotting To Rig For APC – PDP by iksmoore(op): 3:24pm On Jun 29, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised the alarm over alleged plots by the National Commissioner in charge of Operations, Mrs. Amina Zakari, and two directors of the commission to manipulate the system and rig the July 14, Ekiti governorship election in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party said its investigation reveals that two INEC directors: Mr. Pascal Uwakwe, in charge of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and one Mr. Abdulrasaq Agboola have been holding meetings with the APC candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi and Ondo state Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to perfect their plot to rig the election.
The PDP has been fully made aware of how the INEC directors have been meeting with Fayemi, Gov. Akeredolu and other APC leaders at the Ondo state Government House, Akure, in the last three weeks, on the directives of Mrs. Zakari, as well as details of their plot to manipulate the process and rig the election for the APC.
The party is also privy of the game plan of the APC to use INEC’s ICT Department to preload card readers and input false results through E-Collation while also using different sets of Forms EC8A to enter fake results in over 503 polling units to authenticate the fake E-collation results.
The PDP wants Nigerians to note these INEC’s clandestine activities, particularly those of Mrs. Zakari, who is fast earning notoriety in election rigging, as well as the manipulations going on under Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who appears helpless in the face of the machination of the commissioners and directors of the Commission.

Foreign AffairsTrump BACKS OUT Of G7 Agreement-photos by iksmoore(op): 10:18am On Jun 10, 2018
President Donald Trump has stunned world leaders by rejecting a joint statement that traditionally follows the G7, and has escalated his feud with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau by calling him 'dishonest and weak'.
Trump said in a Twitter tirade on Saturday night that he has 'instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique', just hours after all the members came to a consensus in Quebec and signed the summit's 'joint communique'.
The joint communique is a statement of broad goals and principles endorsed by the G7 leaders, and Trump's refusal means that this will be the first year that the annual summit fails to issue one.
