There is trouble for Nigerians seeking asylum in Germany as the German government is set to deport close to 30,000 of them.
The Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Diaspora and Foreign Affairs, Hon. Abike Dabiri Erewa, disclosed this at a programme; “Developing a mixed migration strategy for UNHCR Nigeria” in Abuja on Tuesday.
“Germany said it has about 25,000 to 30,000 Nigerians seeking asylum and they can’t guarantee they will get it. So, there is every possibilities that they will be returned to Nigeria,” she said.
According to her, the reasons for asylum by the Nigerians were not genuine as “some who are from the East and West are saying they are running away from Boko Haram while some others say they are gays and were having challenges expressing themselves in Nigeria.”
The SSA to the President said a date has not yet been set for the deportation of the asylum seeking Nigerians.
“Germany has set up a team working with the ministry of foreign affairs to see how the whole process [of deportation] can be made easier,” she added.
While noting that Germany is offering more scholarships and easier process of regular migration for Nigerians, she appealed to young Nigerians to watch out for those opportunities and take advantage of them.

The parish priest in charge of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, Eziama -Osuama , in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, Rev . Father Christian Amusuo , has been arrested by operatives of the state police command for allegedly shooting his assistant , identified simply as Rev . Father Precious .
Our correspondent gathered that the priest was being held and interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for alleged attempted murder.
Our correspondent learnt on Tuesday that Amusuo had on June 23 allegedly shot his assistant at the parish house after a prolonged argument and weeks of acrimony between the two priests .
The source explained that the clerics had been having issues , which the parishioners said could not be traced to anything tangible .
He said, “ The shooting was a last minute resort by the parish priest to decisively deal with his assistant , who he allegedly accused of being disobedient and flouting his orders.
“We learnt that in a fit of anger , Rev Father Amusuo went into his room and brought out his gun and fired his assistant .
“However, the victim did not die as parish workers came to his rescue. ”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem , said upon the receipt of the information, the Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, ordered investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting .
The police spokesperson said, “Upon the receipt of the information, the state Commissioner of Police , Chris Ezike, ordered investigation into the matter .
“The parish priest is with us and the firearm has been recovered . We are investigating. ”

Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Latter Rain Assembly has blamed the political terrain of Nigeria for the choice of an elderly president .
The former vice - presidential candidate of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change , who spoke during a press conference after his Sunday morning sermon titled, ‘The birth pangs of a new Nigeria ,’ noted that France ’s recent election of 39 -year- old Emmanuel Macron as president was indicative of a global paradigm shift.
Bakare said, “If you want to know whether the President (Muhammadu Buhari ) is getting better (and ) recovering, I said in the course of that message – he ’s on the sure path to recovery . Give him time . Niger Republic has not seen their president for a while.
“Nigeria needs an energetic leader but the circumstances of our polity have brought us to where we are that the same country that the likes of (Yakubu) Godwin ruled at the age of 30 is now considering people in their 60 s and 70 s to administer it.
“What happened in France recently is a clear sign that there is going to be a change of guards almost worldwide . But let’ s accept our own thing and resolve our issues with wisdom.
“(Between) the man in the intensive care unit and the doctor treating him or wishing him dead , you don ’t know who will die first . If God sent Isaiah back to go and tell Hezekiah that He was adding 15 years to his life , He is the only one who can do what He wills to do . Nobody should wish another person dead . We should just pray, because you would put Nigeria in disaster. ”
According to the pastor, who ran alongside Buhari for the presidency in 2011 , whenever leaders served with diminishing energy , a leadership vacuum would be created.
He noted that nature abhorred vacuums and that leadership vacuums often allowed the likes of Adonijah and Absalom in the Bible to have a field day.
Bakare said, “If the President is very healthy and able to discharge his duties, there would be no room for Absaloms and Adonijahs . Absalom was the firstborn whose inordinate ambition had no respect for his father, his benefactor, and was willing to consume him and drag him out of power .
“Those who don ’t learn (from) the blunder of history will repeat the blunder of history until they become history. Adonijah did not learn from what happened to Absalom and he came to a wrong conclusion because his scenario postulation was wrong . He assumed that ‘ if the king is this old and weak, the next in line is automatically the next king ’ . ”
The clergyman added that though the constitution was ‘ full of flaws’ , it provided that in the event that the President could not discharge his duties, he must transmit power to the Vice- President to become acting President.
“(Buhari ) had never left without transmitting that power . So, there ’s no trouble (this time round),” he noted.
Bakare also had a stern warning for military officers conceiving an overthrow of the incumbent government.

An agent of NairaBet, a sports betting platform, has ended his life over his inability to pay a customer who allegedly won a N600,000 bet.

PUNCH Metro learnt that residents of Obadeyi Ajala woke up on Wednesday to find the deceased dangling from a rope in an uncompleted shop at Ajala bus stop, on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The incident was said to have drawn a crowd to the area and a girlfriend of the deceased, who reportedly worked in a filling station in the area, was alerted.

The lady reportedly passed out on sighting the body, but was revived by the sympathisers at the scene.

A resident, Monday Gabriel, told our correspondent on the telephone that the lady gave an account of what could have prompted him to commit suicide.

He said, “I was going to my workplace around 8am when I saw people around three uncompleted shops in Ajala bus stop. On getting there, I saw the corpse of a young man in one of the shops dangling from a rope.


“As we wondered what could have made him to kill himself, a lady, who later identified herself as his girlfriend, arrived at the scene and fainted on sighting the corpse. We poured water on her.

“When she regained consciousness, she told us that the man sent her a text message yesterday (Tuesday), saying he wanted to commit suicide. She said she called his line, but he didn’t pick his calls.

“According to the girlfriend, the late man had a NairaBet shop. One of the customers won N600,000, but he has not paid him.”

Gabriel added that two persons later came and took the lady away from the scene on a motorcycle.

Another eyewitness, Olanrewaju Adebiyi, said policemen from the Ijaiye division came to remove the corpse.

He said, “I learnt he ran a NairaBet shop. If it is true that he was owing a customer N600,000, he must have received the money from the NairaBet management and used it for something else. I also play NairaBet and whenever I win, the agent I patronise pays me the moment the company credits his account.


“The company doesn’t owe the agents, but some of them play smart at times when customers win big money.”

An official of NairaBet Contact Centre, who gave her name only as Chidika, told our correspondent on the telephone that the firm always paid for any won ticket, adding that it was not aware of the incident.

She said, “We always pay for any won ticket. An agent has his own personal business. He/she is just a partner with NairaBet in which we share commission on a monthly or weekly basis. So, it depends on the understanding he had with the customer or the issue on the ground before he committed suicide.”


The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous Cole, confirmed that the case was reported to the police.

“The incident was reported. I will get back to you with more details later,” he said.

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has said that he will dump the People’ s Democratic Party if the Supreme Court ruling does not favour the Makarfi - led caretakercommittee in the leadership face- off with Sherrif.
According to a media report by Channels TV , Fayose said this to newsmen on Tuesday while reacting to media reports that he had removed the name and logo of the PDP from his campaign office and mini signposts mounted on Ado and Ikere- Ekiti roads .
Fayose, however , stated that he remains a bona fide member of the PDP until the outcome of the court ruling .
Despite reconciliation efforts, the governor has stated several times that he does not recognise Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as the party’s leader.
On February 17 , a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt had ruled that the caretaker committee headed by Senator Ahmed Makarfi was illegal and could not act on behalf of the PDP .
Meanwhile, the governor also met with youths in the state where he called for more support for his administration and enjoined them to come out en masse on May 19 to honor the late former Governor of the Southwest region , Gen . Adeyinka Adebayo.
