joseph1832: if you've read the books, you wouldn't have asked me this question. Lol
I’ve read the books a thousand times and I don’t understand how you believe it was mutilated. They adapted it as films the best way they can since they can’t put everything in the movies even though it wasn’t perfect. That’s why they are making a tv series. Things fall apart is not even as long as the 4th book and they’re making a tv series
joseph1832: Saying Things Fall Apart was a monster hit, is an Understatement. It was the most watched tv series back then, with steller cast like Pete Edochie, Justice Esiri etc and every house hold was glued to their TV when it aired.
The story was topnotch back in the day, it still make sense till today. I'm very apprehensive on what Hollywood will do to that masterpiece, given the way they mutilated Harry Potter.
abduleez1: Lol, Sky Europe fighting for it's life for its daily bread.
They want to eat out of the magic bread😂😂. I remember when everyone wanted to boycott the Hogwarts legacy game and it became one of the best selling games of all times 😂😂😂 the Harry Potter franchise is too huge to die out. Thousands of people still go to the Harry Potter world in Orlando here everyday 12 years after the last Harry Potter movie
oyaskii: Solomon Northup who 12 years a slave is based upon, was a son of parents of color who were African American slaves. Where did Americans get African Americans slaves from? and we now know that Igbo slaves landed on the shores of the new world aka America and it's very plausible for Chiwetel Ejiofor to play that role and still be historically correct.
If this is your point, don't you think it's racist to call someone unsuitable for a role because he's British, even though he's black and his ancestors could be Igbos. After all, Chiwetel is not African American and he doesn't understand the struggles of African American people. I don't know why if a white guy does something with An African story, it's cultural appropriation but when another race does it (which they do all the time) it's normal.
oyaskii: It's is solely a Nigerian story first and foremost, as it an Historical fiction set around the times of the Igbo culture during British occupation, other British occupied African countries or regions can have unique stories of their own about this time.
You're right. All I'm saying is the events of Things Fall Apart happened every where there was colonialism. The story of pride and sticking to tradition played it in every colony occupied by the British
oyaskii: Beasts of no Nation is nowhere in scale of Things Fall Apart in terms of literary relevance, but i totally get what you mean
Exactly, that's why I trust A24 more than any Nollywood asaba film production company to tell a better story
oyaskii: Skipped Beasts of No Nation (2015) for years now, because for some reason i haven't gotten around to read the book. might delve into it now since this one of similar vein is on the horizon.
It's one of my favourite movies of all time. And very sorrowful but rewatchable
drstranged: Nigerians just don't read stories with understanding. I don't see anything wrong with someone taking photos with another family. More important, he never claimed or said that was his family. So I really don't understand why people are making such a big fuss over nothing really.
I think Nairaland is getting paid to post propaganda against the Republican party on front page so the Democrats can win the election - they've been doing it for months now. I can't believe no one is talking about the atrocities the Democrats have been doing this past months to win the election. If I were to post about it - it won't be on the front page
Have anyone noticed how Nairaland mods have been shitting on the Republican party like they're getting paid here to give an impression that the Republican party is bad when in hindsight the Democrats have been doing the worst shit since 4 months😂 like Democrat nominees have not been doing the same thing for years. I'm sure it's nlpfmod that has been bringing this to front page every time. If I decide to post negatives about the Democrats - the mods will not bring it to front page
abduleez1: Funny enough I worked on a Nollywood-esque movie recently so it's kinda hypocritical of me bashing the industry but it pains so much seeing the potential but we barely scratching the surface. It was a BBC sponsored movie with Nigerian heritage filmmakers. It was a highly organised set and production (something unheard of in Nollywood ) and I might say it's one of the biggest production spend on filmmaking in Nigeria if not the biggest. It told a familiar time in naija's history and I'm looking forward to when it's released and the reception.
I remember we both discussed about Nollywood quality few years ago and how the coming of Netflix largesse will propel the industry to greater heights. And yet, here we are still talking about quality...only improvements in production quality and being qualified to stream on VOD can be noted.
See how Koreans and Japanese over perform with shoe string budgets compared to Hollywood and yet they deliver and specialized in their capacity. Nollywood no fit even specialize on good comedy no more, the genre we so much love to produce.
These historical movies with "Oyo Empire" period piece is a cheat code for Nigeria to market herself to the world. And yet these people ain't seeing the big picture despite conquering funding palava. E just dey pain person dey are all now looking formulaic after someone cracks the code to success.
A good number of your aforementioned movies has crossed my radar sometime. Downloaded King of Thieves, Breath of Life, Gangs of Lagos for a while now but ain't watched. Afamefuna and The Trade really piqued my interest with the brilliant trailer I watched. Planned on watching them but somehow missed when they released. I heard of Coming From Insanity a while back.
At least with Netflix and a recently resurgent theatrical culture in Nollywood, the industry seems to be on the way evolution. Probably with more profitability more riskier tales might be told. At least now Nollywood films now compete with Hollywood films for box office gross over here and popularity.
Make we dey see sha maybe I might start looking at the industry in a new light.
Who has heard of Mami Wata? It was heavily discussed here when it was a contender at Sundance. With the serious marketing the filmmaker did for it. But film release and nobody talk about am for here since then? Wetin sup?
It's not necessarily the problem of the writers and directors. The normal consumer of Nollywood content don't want to be challenged with complex storylines - it's not like they're force feeding Nigerians bad content - it's just the content most Nigerians want🤷🏽♂️ that's why most movies like Mami wata doesn't do well😪.
oyaskii: Imo, This is some level of cultural appropriation. You can't tell me that one of the biggest stories from the African literature scene written by one of the greatest author the continent has ever produced is going to have no involvement in terms of headline casting from the people the story is actually about. It makes zero sense. The production can be foreign given, but give Nigerian actors the chance to star in it. I don't even want to hear the BS, that Idris Elba is black and whatnot, that brother is 100% British and he has no business playing this role except they are gonna interpret the book wrong. It's like saying Tony Umez should go and play Thor!...These things matter.
So, realistically, How will he even interpret Okonkwo? with a British accent? or he will improvise a Nigerian accent? which imo opinion will only make it worse...they are already losing me...
Well, i wish we took ourselves more seriously, the NTA adaptation happened eons ago, and since then no Nigerian film exec has deemed it fit to retell one of the greatest literary work from these parts..😔
It's not cultural appropriation - telling the story of Things Fall Apart is not just a Nigerian story if you actually think about it - it's an African story and a story of history- the story of Okonkwo should not be segregated to Nigerians only, after all, the events of Okonkwo's death was what played out in almost every British colony.
If it has to be told on screen by a Hollywood studio with a budget a Nigerian studio can't afford: I think it'll be perfect and also you forget Idris Elba produced Beasts of no Nation - 90% of the side characters were Africans. The boy actor who played as the protagonist spent a year in Africa learning the accent and practicing for the role. I'd rather have a good Hollywood actor play a role than the mediocre actors we have in Asaba.
We have talented actors - probably, but most of them don't understand Hollywood and if you don't know this - A24 is a Hollywood studio and they have to abide by the Actor's Guild - no actor can act in a Hollywood film without being a member of Actor's Guild Association except you're a background actor or extra and you don't believe A24 with a tiny budget will fly a lot of Nigerians to act as background actors in different film sets🤷🏽♂️.
If you haven't watched Beasts of no Nation - watch it - they did an amazing job with the accents and the acting. Idris Elba did an amazing job with the accent - accents can be acted - there're a lot of actors who act with different accents from their main accent : even learn a new language for the role : I won't be surprised if Elba speaks Igbo in the series, anything is possible.
Think of the screenplay - I don't trust Nigerians to write a great script that's totally original🤷🏽♂️ sorry but that's just the honest truth.
OhBritannia: Rings of power season 2 episode 7 is a solid ONE million/10 for me.
Ladies and gentlemen!!! this is the best episode so far since they started this project, this episode could easily be the finale and i am even suprise they made it a finale before the grand finale. Now this is what i am talking about, this is what we have all been talking about, instead of other networks to use fillers to waste our time and then expect us to wait till next year or two to give us wars we have been waiting for, they should learn from what the rings of power has done with this season 2.
Proper top of the notch bloody, no mercy war and fights.
This episode is just top notch. Dialogues 10/10 Blood and gore 10/10 Cinematography 10/10 Action and war 10/10. Plots 10/10.
I swear, i can't wait for the episode finale next week and now that arda has gotten a ring, next episode will be bloody.
Though to not drop spoilers, there are some sad deaths in this episode though, some people died that made me feel sad.
We keep talking about how deep this project is that in this episode 7 that's a masterpiece, they didn't even show us Numenor and it's people or the Harfoots and yet the episode is a masterpiece. This is just to tell you how deep this series is and now i understand why they committed 5 seasons to this awesome project.
Anyways, let's see what the episode finale will bring to us.
Will Durin arrive with his dwarf armies or not.
Ladies and gentlemen!!! I am fully and 100% entertained.
Blink twice if the show-runners are holding you hostage👀
kendrick9: **Spoiler**** I heard he dies. Is it true? Haven't played the game. If so i wonder how the show can cope without having it's leading star Pedro in future installments
I think they'll divide the game story to two seasons - if not, he'll die in the first or second episode - from there- it's feminist and girl boss propaganda - tiny Ellie slaughtering grown up men with ease - like how every girl can do - GIRL POWER 🤲🏾🙌🙌
Ishilove: Maybe because I know a little bit about the history of Dahomey and the Amazons, that's why I have never felt inclined to watch the movie. I don't quite appreciate Hollywood's retelling of a story that involved slavery
Exactly, they retelling the story of Africans written by non-Africans, acted by Americans
If they stick to the game story and its development, 80% of people are going to hate it. You can't imagine the amount of hate coming to anyone playing Abby (let her get ready for death threats) as a player of the game- it's a masterpiece in storytelling but in game play to narrate the story - it sucked!! Everyone hated the game play.
Tiny Spoiler: If you thought the LGBTQ stuff was much in the season 1 😂😂😂 you haven't seen anything- they brought an LGBTQ expert to write the story for the game -I'm very certain it'll get banned in most countries because it'll also be like watching child porn because the actress who plays Ellie still looks like a child - that's one of the main reasons everyone despised the game NB: The way they keep advertising Pedro Pascal is false advertising imo
myami: Armadeo, illusioneffect, bankygee, ishilove, guys I was watching the woman king and during the war scene between the agojie and the oyo fighters, the oba told his men to retreat which they did resulting in a stalement. Next scene I saw, the oyo fighters were carting away prisoners of war from the agojie soldiers. This got me wondering, how did they capture this ladies since they retreated?
If I remember correctly, It resulted in a stalemate but some ladies were stuck on the other side of the battle wounded and unconscious resulting in their capture
T1 and t2 that's all. The others didn't make any sense.
T3 was wack. T4 was horrid t5 was horrible with Spartacus friend and dragon queen. T6 was laughable an aging terminator. They actually tried to explain an old Arnold.
T1 and T2 are it. Then the anime was just there for me.
BankyGee: That Maharaja movie you recommended was so good. I let my review twice and got banned twice. I don't know why. It's indeed one of the best movies of 2024
samistry: I recommend the original and it's sequel, judgement day. Then maybe salvation. Skip the rest.
This might be only me but I preferred Terminator 3 way better than the first film- maybe it's nostalgia because it was my first time seeing a nude woman in a movie when I was a child. Kristina Loken was just drop dead gorgeous and still is and the movie still lives up today
And from the rumors I'm hearing his contract is just for a year and doesn't include a movie deal. Which lends to the reasoning that he might be killed off? Or Parallax?
oyaskii: First off... Impeccable choice of trailer song, just scintillating..."Pixies" where is my mind" is such a pristine choice 👏🏿
Secondly... Yeah this look so good, like it's actually the first MCU project that has gotten me excited to look forward to in awhile, based off this visuals.
Thirdly....is that Buckky!😭....
I am so so awakeeee 😩.
Still very skeptical - Marvel is now like a bag of stones and gold. Besides, the writing& creative team overhaul happened after this movie got filmed - it's still likely the same team behind Antman Quantumania. The Director's show Skeleton Crew is also coming up. Maybe the re-writes and date pushbacks did something let's see
SOZINN: You've always been a clown. When someone chooses to defend what he's passionate about then you remember that there's no cash handouts involved and he's not on the planning committee with the executives. You and this your consistent bullshit, whenever you don't agree with someone we start seeing crap like this. 😂
phr0nesis: I pity who de follow IGN rating. If those guys give any show a high rating, just know it will soon get cancelled
Exactly😂. IGN gave The Penguin pilot a 5/10 - pilot episode that's one of the best pilots I've ever watched but they gave Agatha the lesbian witch an 8 - series that won't last
