People are still actually rooting for him because that's how he's written - at the beginning and middle- we tend to humanise him- then at the end he shoves reality back to our face

The penguin episode 3 is a solid 9/10 for me.

Personally this is the best episodes so far solely because of the character development and then telling the storyline in a deep manner so that the audience can finally connect and relate to what's going on.

I like the final transition of Victor from being innocent and now fully in the game and what he had to give up in order to fully transcend into the game.
I like the deep dialogues in this episode 3, dialogues of character developments.

Now the game has began fully, i can't wait for episode 4.
Reddit spoiled the e4 for me. It's actually mind-numbing how good the writers of the show are

I envy your exceptional high taste bossman, you have a clairvoyant knack of only picking the best shows to see..👍🏾
Coming from me though - The Penguin is a masterpiece - I sincerely can't believe how our guy is giving the same score with TROP. The episode 3 is a masterclass of acting and great dialogue and subversion of expectation, I highly recommend

Has a show even become dramatically better after a bad season in recent times? 🤔...it rarely happens. For it to happen, the preceding season has to have some form of discernable quality.

I have no business continuing a show, that contextually had a bad season in my view...i need to be this ruthless considering how precious the time and effort, I am vesting into it, is 😩

Moulin Rouge!......6.5/10

It's a tragic love story about a poetry writer falling in love with a highly sought after courtesan.

This is definitely one of the loudest and chaotically filmed, edited and sound mixing or scoring I've ever seen in an opening 30 mins for a movie.
All Baz Luhrmann movies are so chaotic it's head-aching: The Great Gatsby is the worst. I couldn't understand the movie at all because of all the unnecessary camera movements and chaotic dialogue. Only Elvis was slowed down

The Dark Tower is due for adaptation? Great!! They better not mess it up like they have done with Salem's Lot, which indeed is one of the scariest King novels and I am truly amazed at the negative reviews it has been receiving.
I still can't believe they haven't rebooted Needful Things, it's the first big I've ever reread more than 6 times as a teenager- one of my best books

Came here to check for TV series to binge watch.
Started watching "the last of us" two days ago and was enjoying the show until episode 3 where there was an unnecessary and off-putting gay scene. I stopped watching and totally lost interest in the series since then.
Thank God you stopped so you won't get too invested because the S2 would potentially be the gayest series on television

Although ratings are subjective, I think this guy over exaggerate too much. This was the same way he rated Queen Woo 10/10. Imagine rating that bore fest 10/10?

I must say your taste in films is quite weird... Well, everything comes to personal choices in the end. Maybe I have too much expectations, that's why I'm disappointed? 🤔
The same guy that rated Deadpool and Wolverine a 2😂. I don't take his ratings seriously at all. I heard the last episode of TROP was good but it wasn't great in any way shape or form. The only good thing about the season was just Sauron - the rest of the characters are bore-fests galore.

I disagree with this.... There's a good number of instances where directors have still gotten jobs despite flopping bad.

A living working director is Ridley Scott. Man has underperforming and flop movies littered across his career in Kingdom of Heaven (2004), Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)..... The Last Duel(2021) and Napoleon (2023) both being catastrophic back to back flops with both costing $100mn & $200mn respectively and yet he's still getting top gigs.
In fact, his new film Gladiator II this December is rumoured around $250mn.

Essentially, I'll posit this to say it depends on your directorial pedigree. There are big directors and top directors....still everybody get him grade.

Then there's Martin Scorsese who got about $200mn for Killers of The Flower Moon. Denis Villeneuve had a catastrophic flop in Bladerunner 2049 in 2017 yet he was rewarded by WB with two DUNE movies with similar big budgets.

Although I still agree with you that I can see Todd Philips for getting punished with the aftermath of Joker 2 if it outrightly flops. Still, its not set in stone for any big time director.
You can't compare this directors too any other guy. If a Nolan movie flops, he'll still get funding the next week. They're incomparable- that's just a 5% to other directors so you can't say I'm wrong just because of class directors.
Even Denis Villeneuve - in an interview he said the studio actually almost dumped him and he said the two reasons they didn't is because they were trying to gamble on Dune and Denis who has a personal relationship with a WB exec had always been poised to direct one right from the start of the career.
You gave me just 3 names - I can name hundreds.

Worse than MORBIUS, Madame Web, Catwoman??

Simply put, it wasn't the expectations audiences went with to see it. So the disappointment led to people annoyingly rating it poorly.
But to be actually worse than majority of these movies na lamba.

A movie with an Oscar nominated director doing this vomit is actually insane😂 and madam Webb getting a better score. Pray for Todd Phillips mental health.

No offense but I don't see WICKED doing a billion.
It would have to do impossible numbers to be able to reach that milestone.
I know it's a very popular musical but I don't seeing it being enough for that worldwide gross. It'd most likely over-index in North America and some European countries but I don't see it juice up to $1bn. The best case scenario I see for it with mad performance is $700mn-800mn+ worldwide.

In fact, I'd pick Joker Folie Á Deaux a possible billion dollar film over Wicked.
Why?
*It's done it before. Has more credibility to do it than Wicked. Wicked also has a massive competitor to face in Disney's MOANA 2 a few weeks after release. They'd justle for same audience. So that movie is definitely gonna impact Wicked's gross.

*Lady Gaga also brings her own set of fans to the DC brand. That's a new fanbase that would probably replenish the lost steam Joker might have garnered.
Joker is also leaning on a mix of musical too.

*The addition of a new Harley Quinn iteration is also a big draw. Every ardent DC fan knows Harley Quinn is easily the highest selling female comic book character in terms of merchandise. In fact she's regarded as DC's third pillar, Wonder Woman doesn't even come close and she even outsells Superman. And she's very very popular with girls, t£enage girls at that.

*The Joker is also the most popular and recognisable CBM villain of all time. So there's that. We've seen before @dults are willing to go out enmasse to watch what they want regardless of no kids demography since COVID ie Top Gun: Maverick, The Batman, Dune Part 2, Venom 1&2.

This movie is also almost as controversial as the first. So more juice of the same.

So there's many variables at play for these two movies. Don't be quick to write Joker off. The same way you can bring many PROS for Wicked, I can do same for Joker 2.

Although, I see Joker 2 doing $720-850mn. It has better chances of doing a billion than Wicked. The only advantage I see for Wicked here is cos of it's PG rating.
aged like milk 😂. Bro Joker 2 is going for Flash box office numbers

Lol, the Same Todd Philips that rehashed same story for 3 hangover movies is giving a f-u..

Big cap..

He simply didn't have it in him to recreate the magic of the first.

And just like he did for the hangover, I was always skeptical of this joker sequel.
Making it a musical when Joaquin Phoenix who isn't known for singing as the lead was when something wasn't right.

But can't lie, I wanted it to prove me wrong, too bad sha..
You're wrong, no matter how big of a director you're if you're given a large sum of money to make a movie and you don't get it back- the studios are going to ghost you no matter how successful your films have been- it could be forever or for a long time
Damien Chazelle's films have been very successful and big money makers from tiny budgets but immediately Babylon flopped- studios ghosted his ass and now he has to settle for tiny budgets.🤷🏽‍♂️ That's just how the movie business works. If joker flops, he'll never be given the chance to work with that amount of money again. So if a 'Bleep u' was his plan, it may not work out for him

Man, I'm confused wtf where they all thinking. Also that musical gimmick doesn't really help.

The most baffling to me is making this movie for $200mn. 😱😱 I still don't know what that budget was for even tho Joaquin and Phillips both got $20mn each. And Gaga $10mn.
I hope a fuk u doesn't kill his career

Shit just gets worse.
Apart from the bad story telling, crappy music sequences that did not add to the plot but just made it longer- the main reason it'll definitely flop is simply its preachiness. It's trying to preach to the fans of the first film - the fans saw Joker as a fuvk u to society and Todd Phillips kept on telling the fans they are wrong in this movie and that's just so stupid - all this Hollywood directors don't learn lessons when they get ahead of themselves just because their movie did well- YOU DON'T ANTAGONISE THE FANS🤦🏽‍♂️🤦‍♂️

I strongly disagree with you on these points... The local industry ain't as backward as you think.

Having been on an international standard movie set for 3 months here in Nigeria I'll tell you you're very wrong.

Communication with the Lagos state government and various agencies was mostly a smooth ride.

We shot at various high density locations in Lagos...closed off roads partially and/or fully for a few days during our course of shooting.
In fact, we shot on the third mainland bridge a few hours. With not much hiccups.

We didn't need to close down a huge market for months. Just a day was needed and a very tiny section with adequate collaboration with LASTMA, Police, private security and the market people and all necessary agencies or collaborators. And we didn't need to pay off everyone. We had our own extras to portray market people the way we liked in our own controlled settings.

We did all these without even delaying our original scheduled date to wrap up production. Almost seemed like a miracle to me sef.

So there's not much of a big deal here if you want to go serious in shooting a movie in Lagos or Nigeria at large. It just all boils down to serious planning and scheduling and division of labour.
You could be right but you can't compare shooting a Marvel movie to this - it'd be very dumb for them to shoot here and besides there are a lot of regulations and restrictions for shooting outside the US and Western countries

The opening scene of Captain America: Civil War (2016) was supposedly an open market in Lagos, Nigeria, and these people couldn't be arsed to come here and shoot, and they just simulated it in Atlanta, Georgia and kept it moving.
🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️ I've been speaking to someone who doesn't know shit about Hollywood by the way. You actually think it would make more sense to
1. fly to a country none of the A-list celebrities have ever been to in the middle of Boko-Haran pandemic -
2. put them in significant danger
3. Fly filming equipments worth millions
4. Close down a market for months (EXACTLY! and pay everyone of them)
5. Report directly to the Lagos State Government (who have no significant laws when it comes to this sort of thing)
6. Build massive sets so the Twitter race dividers and baiters will be proud
7. Cause significant chaos because it'll be very difficult to shoot considering it's Lagos
All to shoot a less than 10 minute scene because folks like you'd be annoyed and enraged on Twitter when they can do the exact same scene in a studio for less than 1% of the budget. I can't believe you don't understand the concept of money🤦🏽‍♂️
If there's a significant audience for a show - it'll get the attention of investors and that always ALWAYS makes a show better - The Things Fall Apart series can be a significant boom to Nollywood writers or directors looking for an opportunity🤷🏽‍♂️

Ah, yes Bob Hearts Abishola. The comedy with the most atrocious Nigerian accents? Remember Bob is a white man. The Nigerian sarcasm and quest for excellence is dialled up to the extreme. Remember that the Bob character is a white man. I see the show as a white man's struggle to date someone with a foreign culture to America. A white man is even the best to direct it.

America is diverse but not so much that Nigerians make a significant influence in the same way Mexicans, Indians, Chinese and certain Europeans do.

For instance, how many Nigerian restaurants would you see on a high street compared to Chinese, Italian and Mexican? Hmm?

The Idris Elba and John Boyega both flop when it comes to Nigerian accents. They both do American gangsta accents better. Boyega even tried a bit in Woman King.

Countries have heritage. No one will tell your story better than you.

Just even look at Nigerians today. We are sold the story of Jews being the chosen ones. Look at how foolish Nigerian Christians support isreal claiming that Muslims or Ishmaelites cannot hurt isreal because God is the protector of Israel. Lol.

African history has been whitewashed by the west.
Forgive me if I doubt that the same people will do well to tell a Nigerian colonial story well.

Just even look at Black Panther. I loved the movie but I realised that the villain was the guy that was ready to retaliate against colonialism. T'challa didn't care about racism or colonialism. Killmonger even pointed out how cultural artifacts from Africa were stolen by the British. Black Panther was directed by an African American. Maybe an African director would have the anti-colonianist be the hero....or maybe not as he could be one of those white-worshipping Nigerian Conservatives
oyaskii:
Bob ❤️ Abishola is the absolute worst project to drive home your point, because 5 episodes into season 1, i couldn't stand how cringe it was. They were trying too hard and it came out blatantly pretentious. There are tons of articles that criticize them for it and i culled one from medium below. The comedy holds up, but beyond that, i.e. trying to infuse the Yoruba culture and all that, was total garbage and cringeworthy.

That being said, you can't just wake up and make a movie or write a book about a totally different culture, because you love the culture, it doesn't work that way. Culture is a lived experience and you can't properly portray an experience you haven't lived, you might deceive yourself all you want, and people not wanting you, who haven't lived their experiences to tell their story, is not racism except racism has another meaning. It is a condescending mentality that makes Hollywood think they can tell stories of other cultures without fuss, if a Nambian director wants to do a JKF story in Namibia, sorry, he will be vallified from here to Timbuktu for it!.

Hollywood is multifaceted given, but when stories about mexicans, Indians, Brits, or Jews, are being made, you actually see the effort that goes into it. They research, meet with locals, go to actual locations about the culture to shoot and they come out good because it is a true representation but you see stories concerning Africa or Nigeria per se, they can't actually be arsed to come here and do any proper research. They just find a film head that is British Nigerian or American Nigerian who has probably lived there all his/her life to spew some nonsense about Nigerian culture, and they slap the person's native name on the credits and call it a day. The opening scene of Captain America: Civil War (2016) was supposedly an open market in Lagos, Nigeria, and these people couldn't be arsed to come here and shoot, and they just simulated it in Atlanta, Georgia and kept it moving.

So, no matter the defence you put up, people having a bone to pick about one of Nigerian favorite book being given an Hollywood treatment are in the right. The premise of the books takes place in "Iguedo" in the Umuofia clan in south east Nigeria, so i am close to 100% sure, that they are not stepping foot here to shoot, so they will simulate "Iguedo", Umuofia clan, in America, and to you that will be the true representation of the book, because according to you, "They love the culture"

Abeg Abeg...They have bought the rights to the book and no lamentations will change it, my own is that, they had better not fail....😒
It looks like you guys don't really get my point at all🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️ and honestly I won't try to write a whole essay on the subject anymore.

My whole point is IF THEY ARE SPIRITED AND DRIVEN ENOUGH TO MAKE A 'THINGS FALL APART SERIES' - being American or British or Yoruba or another culture shouldn't and should never be a cause or deterrent to shame them into thinking they won't do a good job - how can you guys not actually see that?

Have Hollywood made mistakes in adapting African cultures? Of course!! Could they make exactly the same mistakes? Yes! and could it even be worse? Yes! But does that mean they should stop trying? Of course No!

How can you say Hollywood should stop 'cultural appropriation' and adapting African series because they can't get our accents🤦🏽‍♂️. There're not a lot of African shows and movies from Hollywood because of this constant complain - it's still a learning process. Do you actually think they would just get the 'African formula' instantly?

Just thirty years ago - Hollywood tried adapting Japanese stories into movies and they were receiving significant backlash because they were never accurate. Jump to 2024 - Shogun is receiving the most awards in the Emmys.🤷🏽‍♂️

Being accurate is awesome but it takes time🤷🏽‍♂️ they may not get everything right but it'll certainly be an improvement. Bro, they've not even announced anything except the show-runners and you guys are already huffing and puffing. Have you guys not actually thought about the significance to Nollywood if this series does well at all?👀 Or you guys think it's 10 naira they use to make films? Be smart! Everything is about money - if this show does well- Hollywood will start taking a closer look on Nigerian stories - that way - it'll ensure they get better in adapting them🤷🏽‍♂️. In turn Nollywood will see a significant boom in quality because of investments - that'll never happen if Nollywood adapts the story itself
