Anatomie d'une chute aka Anatomy of a Fall (2023).

A delicately fabricated mystery thriller with a french flavour that would make John Grisham proud!

I have been looking out for this one since i saw the trailer sometime ago and it landed on my coffers on Friday and i had to devour almost immediately...

Starts off as a murder thriller with less intensity, but as it begins to peel away, it cascaded into a heated courtroom drama where under the uncanny scrutiny of the law and strangers, mistakes, secrets, and mental health issues is laid bare as our main act tries to defend herself in an apparent murder of her better half with her visually impaired son, seemingly the only witness.

Sandra Hùller delivers one of the finest acting i have seen in a female lead for a while, and she was basically the bane of the entire thing. Shame the Oscar big prize might ellude her because the movie seemed to be in an "Oscar limbo".

There's something about the french language that makes it so pleasing to hear, more so, it being spoken in a heated courtroom!. The dialogues were heavy with intent and so so good, totally reminded me of my one my fave movie "Marriage Story" (2019), that towed the same genre path.

Big shame, France decided not to submit it for best foreign language film at the Oscars next year due to the director's political squabble with the French President

But make no mistake, This was a special special film! 💐

8/10.

Rightly said. It's not about quality but more about the costs.
Imagine hearing a show like Invincible costing about $10mn per episode. Won't you scoff at that especially when you compare the show to the greatest TV show ever — GOT, that had episodes for $10mn a pop, before increasing to $15mn an episode in the final season. You'd see a massive gulf in quality, both in visuals and otherwise.

Look at House of The Dragon that had 10 episodes with about $20mn per episode. Next season it's dropping to 8 episodes.

Truly, it's only network TV that you'd see in this present age having about 14 episodes and above. That's almost impossible in streaming these days and the standard is 8-10 episodes. Networks audience are so used to weekly release and are more patient, they also have season breaks asides being significantly cheaper to produce.
It's going to be compounded a bit with the recent strike deal between the actors and writers union of America for better pay. So, TV and movie production is about to get costlier. 😉 And surely, studios will find way more ingenious ways to cut costs. Also brace yourselves for more show cancellations. This time, there won't be much patience for underperforming shows, unless it's a key strategy for a studio.
You're 100% right. Not only is there no patience for underperforming shows, there's no patience for "likely to underperform" movies or shows.
A perfect example is Batgirl- a movie that has finished production, and even post production🤦🏿‍♂️. I can't begin to imagine what's actually going on in the minds of the people who has filmed, and worked their ass off in making the movie. Shows like The Federates that had finished production was quietly cancelled😪 even before premiering an episode.

Because now there is less filler and less time-wasting and instead a focus on the point approach...

Before you would sometimes get 20 episodes where half of them are filler or episodic...

But with the attention span of the audience getting shorter, the shows are getting shorter and more straight to the point... DC

And also, people now prefer linear plot than the usual episodic ones we got back in the day
I don't think that's the issue sir. It's actually not about attention span and linear plots - the problem is streaming and money; a streaming company has to develop lots of shows to still be in business and the costs are so much nowadays that they have to find ways of cutting costs. An episode of a show could cost up to 10 million dollars that's actually the main reason. If you notice, some sitcoms and shows still have lots of episodes like BOB HEARTS ABISHOLA and Young Sheldon but are owned not by streaming companies but legacy media companies

This might not be the proper thread, but i keep seeing y'all rate "Jawan" highly and i am struggling to know why. The story was absymal and in some part defied any sane logic. Plus the action was the same dramatic nonsensical Bollywood trope action style that has become so tiring.

An easy 4/10 at the very best.
I actually had the same idea you had once. I started watching mostly because of my brother like a 100gb worth of them. In the beginning watching movies like Dhoom, the three Khan's movies and so on, I seriously hated the over the top and insane logic of this kind of movies; most of the stories were so off and the only Bollywood movies I fancied were the ones that sealed with society and personal values without the action. Then I realised they actually did all this on purpose. It was actually their trademark, that was what actually made them different from Hollywood. So after that realisation, I began to find this "flaws" as art 😂 and when those moments come to screen I just found them funny😂

Movies I watched last week
Jawan - 8/10

Forgotten I really love Bollywood movies with their over the top action.

Zoolander - 9/10
Classic, and fun to watch. A perfect comedy

Alien 1986 - 10/10
Best movie of the month (excluding Oppenheimer)

The Marvels - 6/10
I had a free ticket so I watched this in theatres. It's not a bad movie but it's far from a good movie just shows the Marvel problem is still on. A total meh movie and a waste of time

OPPENHEIMER.....9.9/10

A bit slow at first, then the story begins to pick up on the hour mark. At 1hr28mins into the film, the story fully escalates and it's a joyride henceforth. Everything about the movie was superb. There's not much I can say about the film that hasn't been said already.

But, it's a cinematic Masterpiece. Premium Cinematography. Superb acting performances from all the entire cast especially to the likes of Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Jason Clarke.
The standout performances for me in the movie were for both Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt. It's an ensemble movie nicely done with virtually all the characters having a role to play in elevating the story.

The connection of the opening scene of the film in the explosion chain reaction with the text saying: "Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to man. For this, He was chained to a rock and punished for eternity", in relation to Albert Einstein's words to Oppenheimer, both scenes are creatively profound.
Einstein said Oppie was going to face the consequences of his achievement and was going to be punished for it by people, and when they've punished him enough they'd later give him an award, celebrating his life achievements but really it was to compensate him and to make themselves feel better.
What a way to start a movie and end it.
Christopher Nolan is a master storyteller.

I also loved the symbolism of Nolan using colour for past events and black and white for present happenings. A break from the norm. Also, the illustrations of Oppie's thoughts using the solar system, colors, sound and light to properly convey his emotions. It's just brilliant.

The minus 0.1 point deduction was for not revealing to me the sweet face of defeat of Lewis Strauss at the press release after being rejected by the Senate committee.

After seeing the film, now I understand the hype. This is the first clear Best Picture contender I've watched all year round. The award just seems destined for this film.
I've had lots of discussions about this movie. When I watched it in cinemas first of, I was just so overwhelmed that I couldn't even understand what was really going on. I was just soaking in the cinematic masterpiece that it was
So I recently watched it on my laptop in 4k. Just from the sound only at the beginning with the rain dropping sounds, I just replayed just that 1 minute before we could see Oppenheimer's face over and over and over again; the music blasting all through the movie just had its own story to tell that it didn't really feel like a movie to me anymore but a visual orchestra. When I heard that Can you feel the music I immediately went to Spotify to listen to it repeatedly. No doubt, this movie is one of my top 5 movies of all times.

@ Bolded..... Lmfao, dey play....

Poor Things with Emma Stone as the lead actress has a big lead as the most prominent competitor in the Best Actress category. It's a huge gap.
Based on the trades I'm seeing currently, there's no way she misses out on Best Actress nomination. She's the favourite to win it sef.

So, all in all, it still in the favour of Poor Things and it's also a Best Picture contender at present, based on the trades.

We wouldn't need to wait much sef, since in the next few weeks we'll start seeing nominations for awards bodies and the awards season will kickstart to full swing proper.

You no fit see shït to take use me do Dorime this season. grin grin grin
I don't think she is. Killers of the flower moon actress and the actress in Color Purple are the main contenders

Lol, as usual you begin to cry when someone starts poking holes in your logic.

Twitter and Reddit are known echo chambers and the majority of general audiences don't have their major section as Film Twitter.

Using Nairaland as a case study, majority of peeps here aren't even on film twitter and care shït for it. Some don't even know the intricacies of franchises and just watch shït as the spirit leads. Abi no be this thread if people start in depth analysis of Hollywood and filmmaking business, half the thread will start shouting "DEVIATION" or "DERAILMENT".

So assuming online nerds/enthusiasts or industry professionals on social media as general audience is a funny assumption.

The Marvels and any other films you'll want to use as examples, were they loved or supported by the fans?? CBM fans already hated these movies long before they came out sef.

There's no successful comic book movie that doesn't have the support of the fanbase first before general audience. The fanbase are the ones that are going to jump in watching this movies on early screenings, premiere night and so on. They're the ones that will create the initial Word of Mouth before general audiences now flock in to decide if it's worth their time.

The Marvels in particular was already hated cos it's Femcentric and features characters no one gives a fvvk about. Is the movie good? Is it an important character?
If the fanbase themselves don't love a project, there's no way general audience will support especially when it's a mediocre film in the first place.

So anyone lacking these context, I'm sorry I can't take your position seriously. Especially when you're a known propagator of "what-aboutism".

I'm sorry if I task you extra special to bring facts about the problems facing CBM at present. I feel someone just saying "Superhero Fatigue" as the sole reason barely knows what he's saying or just goes with the crowd; which is easier to do since almost everyone is currently shitting on it. So it easily hides the deficiencies in one's argument.

I'm too enmeshed in CBM social media discourse that's it hard to just come and drop cliché statements like CBM fatigue and I'll believe you. Just making blanket statements and I'll know you're bullshiting.
Exactllly my point

Poor Things is more than assured to get a Best Picture nomination. Saltburn also seems very likely too.

Joker had less than stellar RT score and was very divisive but was a Best Picture nominee and Best Actor winner. In fact, it was nominated in almost all the relevant categories.
The same goes for The Whale

The MCU is not interested in cutting down on content.

Bro...the fact is that Superhero Fatigue exists...

You want proof? I myself am proof of it already...
And I know many people that are the same. They are burnt out by these movies cos they follow the same structure.

A great way of fixing this is by subverting from the norm.
A lot of Superhero movies troupes and structure are already tiring to the audience.

The Batman works because it's more grounded...it didn't follow the usual format we see these movies follow.

Same as why a Joker 2 movie will perform well. Because it is a Superhero movie that doesn't feel like one...as it doesn't follow the same overused structure and troupes...

Guardians 3 and Spiderverse are movies with characters that the audience already resonate with before the Superhero Fatigue became a thing...and as such, the audience would follow the characters to their conclusion.

Also, what I can assure you is that one guaranteed way of killing CBM is to focus on the MULTIVERSE.

You should have seen comments when the news broke that Invincible S2 would explore the MULTIVERSE. Even on the subreddit they discussed how Marvel and DC had completely killed the concept so much that the regular audience hate that word.

Luckily so far Invincible is handling it in a way that isn't exhausting.

Regular Audience don't want to hear the word "Multiverse"
I get your point but I won't necessarily call it fatigue - it seems like you're saying people don't want to watch superhero movies anymore but that's not entirely true. The problem is just over saturation of superhero movies- and this movies don't feel Unique and different anymore- so fans of the genre just decide to pick a good superhero when there are just so many, take a look at Gen V - it's already one of the most watched shows in Amazon because it's different, and very interesting. The problem is not superhero fatigue, it's just boring oversaturated superhero content
