PoliticsBreaking News: Aondoakaa Flees Abuja For Senegal, Spain ( Ibori Also on the run) by Imeobong(op): 9:38pm On Feb 13, 2010
Source: http://www.saharareporters.com/real-news/sr-headlines/5153--too-hot-in-the-kitchen-aondoakaa-flees-abuja-for-senegal-spain.html

Nigeria's controversial and notoriously corrupt public officer, Michael Aondoakaa, the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, who was recently demoted to the ignominy of cabinet “Special Duties,” may have fled the heat of the kitchen. Andoakaa, who is also under fire from a fellow minister, Dora Akunyili, over reckless statements he made over her actions in recent cabinet meetings, may not be in a position to respond to her seven-day ultimatum, which expires in five days.  He quietly left for Senegal on Thursday night, apparently to avoid the consequences of his dubious errands on behalf of the kitchen

The former AGF also faces mounting pressure from several interests that he extorted for cash as he went about his duties heavily compromised. A family source told Saharareporters in Abuja that his decision to travel out of Nigeria was abrupt as they were planning to meet with him in his hometown in Benue State this weekend, but Aondoakaa promptly traveled out of the country after he applied for a 30-day leave.  It is unclear if the government approved the application before he left.

Sources close to the Minister told our reporter that he lost his swagger and suddenly became fearful for his life after he was removed from office as AGF, choosing to run away to Dakar, one of his favorite destinations. He is expected to travel to Spain from Senegal until things cool down a bit.

Aondoakaa’s disappearance is coming on the heels of the jetting-out of James Ibori, a kitchen-cabinet colleague, purportedly to spend Valentine's Day in Dubai and South Africa with his new girlfriend, Senami Sosu. His wife is in London, preparing to face trial, while his mistress, Mrs. Udoamaka Okoronkwo is also unavailable, as her trial commences in a right after Valentine's Day.

It is believed that owing to the recent political developments, the kitchen cabinet members might have started considering other options, especially fleeing Nigeria

PoliticsSss, Nia Probe Assent To 2009 Supplementary Budget by Imeobong(op): 4:01pm On Feb 13, 2010
Culled from Saturday Tribune

At least two main security outfits in the country, the State Security Services (SSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) have launched a probe into circumstances leading to the announcement of presidential assent on the 2009 supplementary budget late December, last year.

President Umaru Yar’Adua had left the country on November 24, a day before the Senate passed a harmonised copy of the budget, in concurrence with the version earlier passed by the House of Representatives.

While the constitution guarantees that a bill can only stay 30 days on the president’s table after its passage by the National Assembly, no one was sure the supplementary budget would not lapse before Yar’Adua returned to the country.

But the kitchen cabinet announced, close to the end of the year, that it had secured the signature of the president on the N382 billion Supplementary Budget, through which the lawmakers extended the financial year to March 2010.

There have been uncertainties as to the manner in which the presidential assent was obtained on the budget, with some sources claiming that the President was not in a position to sign the budget as at the end of last year.

Sources claimed that the President was in and out of coma at that time and that he could not have been in a position to read, understand and assent the 90-page budget.

Sources comfirmed to the Saturday Tribune that the two agencies are now on the trail of all presidential aides who were linked with the passage of the budget to Saudi Arabia.

A source said that one top aide of the president has been quizzed in Abuja and that the aide told the security operatives that he did not see the president physically to sign the budget.

The aide was said to have stated that he was aware the budget was taken to Saudi Arabia and that he was on the team that took the budget to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia but he was only asked to stay at the lobby of the King Faisal Hospital, while another aide of the president collected the budget and brought it about two hours later after it had been signed.

Said a source: “Recent situation has really tasked the patience of the security operatives. We are largely in the dark about the situation and the whereabouts of our Commander-in-Chief and that is unheard of and the leaders have decided that we must be on top of the situation.”

It was gathered that the security system would now take the desired interest in the health situation of President Yar’Adua, so as to be able to brief “the system” on the true state of things.

RomanceEnstranged Housewife Laments How Mother-in-law Sent Her Packing by Imeobong(op): 8:07pm On Feb 12, 2010
WHAT God has joined together, let no man put asunder. This maxim aptly apply to an aggrieved house wife, Mrs Oluwakemi Florence Obarame who threatened to vacate her matrimonial home because of the seemingly disagreement between her and her mother-in-law.
However, what aggravated the situation was the determination of the man at the center of the crisis, Mr. Ifeanyi Obarame who wanted to eat his cake and have it. Obarame who was recently accused by his wife of becoming intolerable, declared that he is still much in love with his estranged wife, Oluwakemi. He specifically asked the court to prevail on the woman to shelve her divorce plan.

Oluwakemi, 25, who could not fight back tears narrated her ordeal before an Alimosho Grade ‘B’ Customary court. She said her mother-in-law is making life unbearable for her in her matrimonial home.

The troubled woman told the court that notwithstanding her husband’s temperament, her mother-in-law succeeded in mounting pressure on him to send her packing barely one year after their marriage.

According to her, she noticed that her husband suddenly became very aggressive and beats her at slightest provocation, which she attributed to the influence and pressure from his mother.

Kemi who claimed to have met her husband, Obareme at the Computer village, Ikeja in 2008, where they started a relationship which culminated into marriage same year, however said that the union was blessed with a one year_old boy, Abel Obarame.

She urged the court to dissolve the marriage and grant her custody of the boy, for proper care.

The 25 year-old Ifeanyi in his response admitted to the court that he was indeed hot-tempered but his wife always create problem with his mother, by allegedly displaying her lack of respect to the old woman. According to him, his wife (Kemi) had once picked a knife and threatened to stab his mother.

He said when Kemi could not cope living together with his mother, he had to look for a new apartment, and they moved in, leaving behind their little boy to keep the old woman busy.

Expressing his unfettered love for his estranged wife, Obarame appealed to the court to save the marriage, insisting “I am still in love with my wife.”

Beside, he refused to ask for the custody of their only child, Abel. He said he still believe that they can still live together as husband and wife while their problems resolved. Meanwhile, the suit was adjourned for judgment.

More trouble for Aondoakaa.

Update:
…Reps insist on probing petition

House of Representatives Committee on Public Petition has said that it will still go ahead to investigate the petition by Information and National Orientation Minister, Prof Dora Akunyili against her Special Duties counterpart, Michael Aondoakaa.
Chairman of the committee, Hon C.I.D. Maduabum disclosed yesterday that the only reason the federal legislature can drop its investigative hearing into the matter is for Akunyili to “formally withdraw” the petition.

“As a validly referred petition, this committee would go ahead and conduct an investigative hearing to ascertain the veracity of the allegation. It added that the only reason the committee would drop the hearing is if the petitioner decides to withdraw it formally.
“The petition has been referred to us and consistent with our rules, it will be treated accordingly. It is a validly referred petition. We can only stop the hearing when she (Akunyili) formally withdraws the petition,” Maduabum stated.

The lawmaker stated that the fact that Akunyili had dropped the controversial memo, which triggered her altercation with the former justice minister, Chief Michael Aondoaka, not with standing, the investigation will still hold.
Akunyili had on Tuesday through Hon. Dino Melaye and two others filed a petition before the House alleging that Aondoaka made disparaging statements against her by accusing her of sharp practices while serving as Director General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC).

The petitioners also accused Aondoakaa of making uncomplimentary remarks against the National Assembly while speaking on a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) programme over the resolutions of the Senate and the House that Vice President Goodluck Jonathan should assume full presidential powers.

“The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa, as the custodian of our laws, should be compelled by the House of Representatives to appear before the relevant committee to prove the allegations against him,” he stated.
Maduabum said both parties would be given the opportunity to present their cases when the hearing commences
PoliticsThe Crisis Bw Dora Akunyili & Aondokaa Deepens As She Rejects "apology Letter" by Imeobong(op): 5:03pm On Feb 12, 2010
The disagreement between Dora Akunyili, the Minister for Information and Communications and Michael Aondoakaa, the former Attorney General of the Federation, is going to court next week. That is unless Mr. Aondoakaa issues a clear apology to Mrs Akunyili and publishes it in the media, including The Nation, the newspaper in which Mr. Aondoakaa issued his offensive statement earlier this week.  In a letter to Mr. Aondoakaa on behalf of Mrs. Akunyili, Kop Odidika of SOWER & MESSUARIUS SOLICITORS, said the former AGF’s letter to Mrs. Akunyili was unacceptable, as Aondoakaa had “most disingenuously tried to put a spin on an otherwise clear and unambiguous statement that has only one interpretation, to wit: that our client committed some untoward acts while at the helm of affairs in NAFDAC.”

He described Mrs. Akunyili’s integrity as unimpeachable.  “Her tenure at NAFDAC can accurately be described as the golden years of that establishment as no other head whether prior to, or subsequent to, her appointment has achieved so much as to even merit comparison with her.”

The new Minister for Special Duties, who fell from the dizzying heights of the office of the AGF only two days ago,  now has seven days to meet Mrs. Akunyili’s terms or find himself looking for a lawyer.

Below is the full text of the letter from Mrs. Akunyili’s lawyers:

February 11, 2010

Chief Micheal Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN

Minister for Special Duties

Federal Secretariat

Abuja.

Dear Chief Aondoakaa,

Libelous publication against Prof. Dora N. Akunyili

We are the solicitors to Prof Dora N. Akunyili on whose behalf and instruction we write to you in connection with the above subject matter.

It is our instruction that you issued a statement which was published on Monday the 8th of February 2010 in a widely circulating national newspaper, The Nation, wherein you said, inter alia “Bringing the memo to Federal Executive Council is just to make herself an angel. She wants to be seen as populist. Whatever she wants from it is still personal. None of the FEC members has disrespect to the Vice-President. As far as we are concerned, the VP is our leader and he is leading us. What she is trying to do is self-seeking: let her go and confront herself with what happened in NAFDAC”.

Our client has been inundated with telephone calls and personal enquiries from numerous people about your said statement concerning the implication that she did something wrong while she was the Director General of NAFDAC. She duly informed you of these enquiries and demanded by her letter to you dated February 8, 2010 that you confirm the authenticity of the authorship of the statement and if confirmed to supply full particulars of your allegations of her misdeeds in NAFDAC to which you alluded.

By your letter of February 9, 2010 addressed to our client, you admitted making the statement but most disingenuously tried to put a spin on an otherwise clear and unambiguous statement that has only one interpretation, to wit: that our client committed some untoward acts while at the helm of affairs in NAFDAC.

There is no doubt that as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, you are presumed to be conversant with not only legal matters but with English Language as well. Whilst one can concede your privilege to use any language, no matter how crude and unbecoming of a lawyer and public servant, in your private home and office, same should be tempered and civilized when describing and referring to another person.

More regrettable is the fact that your libellous publication was against our client whose integrity has been unimpeachable. Her tenure at NAFDAC can accurately be described as the golden years of that establishment as no other head whether prior to, or subsequent to, her appointment has achieved so much as to even merit comparison with her.

Our client therefore finds it totally unacceptable that her peers and generality of Nigerians have begun to question her integrity and now consider her a disreputable person because of the statement you made. Your said letter of February 9, 2010 therefore begs the issue.

We hereby demand that you issue a clear apology to our client and cause the said apology to be published prominently in the media including The Nation newspaper. Please TAKE NOTICE that unless this demand is met within 7 days from the date hereof we shall commence legal proceedings, against you to compel obedience and seek financial compensation for the injury done to our client’s reputation.

Please treat as very urgent.

Yours faithfully,

PoliticsYar’adua Loyalists Decide New Strategies Against Jonathan by Imeobong(op): 4:38pm On Feb 12, 2010
Source: http://www.saharareporters.com/real-news/sr-headlines/5131-acting-presidency-yaradua-loyalists-decide-new-strategies-against-jonathan.html

Following yesterday's celebrated dethronement of Nigeria’s most corrupt Attorney General since independence, Michael Aondoakaa, who was widely considered to be the most influential member of the Yar’Adua kitchen cabinet, Saharareporters has learned that the group may have decided on immediate legal action, to be spearheaded by Northern politician, Tanko Yakassai. Rallying the deflated troops yesterday evening, its Abuja-based arrowhead, James Ibori, hurriedly summoned a meeting of its deflated remnants of the group. They met all night to consider fresh options to combat to Goodluck Jonathan, who was named “Acting President” via resolutions of both houses of the National Assembly 72 hours ago.

Jonathan started his new role by chairing the Federal Executive Council meeting perched on the seat of the president, which had been empty for close to 80 days. Before entering the chambers for the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting, sources say he tried frantically to sack Aondoakaa outright, perhaps to eliminate his divisive tendencies, but other members of the kitchen cabinet advised against it. It was then he settled for a minor reshuffle by moving Aondoakaa to a less conspicuous cabinet position where he will have limited powers to cause immediate havoc to what has become a shaky resolution by the legislative arm of the Nigerian government. That move alone was certain to change the dynamics within the government, and the country.

Ibori, the former Governor of Delta State has everything to lose with the removal of Andoakaaa from the coveted seat of AGF, as it immediately conjured up the nightmare prospect for him of his wife and associates facing criminal trial in a UK court may all end up in jail. The group last night resolved to respond by dragging the legality of Jonathan’s ascendancy to the presidency into question and transform the issue into a full-blown constitutional crisis that would position the military wing of the group to strike.

Sources say the EFCC may also have been activated already to search Aondoakaa’s house based upon a fresh petition that the Bayelsa State governor paid him $1.5 million to fight Jonathan, but what was found turned out to be the remainder of a $3 million deal the state had with Aondoakaa to sign off on Yar’Adua on citing a campus of the Nigerian Law School campus in the state. Aondoakaa routinely extorts money from state governors for favorable decisions concerning them to be made by Yar’Adua.

Another source told Saharareporters that but for the removal of Aondoakaa yesterday, he was already armed with a lawsuit with which he wanted to get a judge in Abuja to help “interpret” the motions of the National Assembly by which Jonathan became Acting President, hence the mobilization of policemen to his house and office to forestall any such action.

Saharareporters also spoke to several National Assembly members over their action, and they all insisted that they did what they did out of necessity and to close the vacuum and the political crisis created by Yar’Adua’s absence. Our sources said, however, that the members of the National Assembly acted only when it was leaked to them that a radical group in the military planned to take over power and wipe out the entire political class including former head of states, media owners, businessmen with political connections, some visibly political traditional rulers and some members of the clergy. The intelligence that was shared with them through diplomatic sources led to the “expedient” action to make Jonathan “Acting President”. There may be credence in this, given that only the previous week, many National Assembly members continued to stand by Yar’Adua.

On Tuesday, when the Senate President was making his declaration regarding the resolution to make Jonathan “Acting President and the Commander –in-Chief of the Armed Forces”, he had practically plagiarized the proposition of notable human rights activist, Femi Falana, who earlier proposed that the issue could be resolved on the basis of the “doctrine of necessity”.

Last night’s proposed response by Yar’Adua loyalists, in which they chose to seek ways to extend the crisis in order to turn things in their favour, suggest that Nigeria’s troubles are not over. So far, they have refused to allow members of the House of Representatives delegation currently in Jeddah to visit Yar’Adua. A source at the National Assembly confirmed to Saharareporters that the delegation of the House of Representatives was denied access to Yar’Adua outright. According to their flight itinerary, they are now billed to return to Nigeria tomorrow.

Saharareporters has also learned that another three–man delegation comprising the Governors of Katsina, Bauchi and Benue States may also meet with no success in their effort to see Yar’Adua, a mission that they could not accomplish by the close of business in Jeddah today. The delegation had been used as a back up to force out a letter from Yar’Adua’s wife, the woman who has been the most intransigent of all the kitchen cabinet members.Turai Yar’Adua has vowed that Nigeria will never see a letter transmitting power to Jonathan. She has kept that promise, but if by the vow she meant that Jonathan will not ascend to Acting President, it seems she needs a new calculator.

As for the Abuja based kitchen cabinet, they have resorted to agreed lines of propaganda, which Nigerians will see more of in the following days, to mobilize against Jonathan, including repeatedly using Obasanjo’s name to poison the political elite in the North again him. For example, Yar’Adua’s Chief Economic Adviser, in a text message obtained by Saharareporters last night following the strategy meeting, said, “Obj, Aliko, Steve (Orosanye) all meeting. Obj has hijacked the gov(’t), Kayode is Obj nomination, They will sack Ruma next week. Farida is going! Nuhu (Ribadu) is coming back. And VP is coming for us. Gov(’t) is withdrawing from all lawsuits against Yar’adua-TY”. Various elements of this propaganda were repeated in James Ibori’s Daily Independence newspaper today.

Obasanjo was supposed to be attending an event promoted by his business partner Andrew Young thorough the LEON H. SULLIVAN FOUNDATION today at the National Press Club in Washington DC, but the event has been cancelled due to the inclement weather in the DC area. One of his aides told Saharareporters that Obasanjo was actually at the Lagos airport last night enroute to the US but had to return to his farm in Otta because he was told the event in DC was canceled.

Part of the kitchen cabinet strategy is also to reactivate the rumor that Yar’Adua will return by the end of February 2010 when it would have been 90 days since his “marabouts” reportedly put him into spiritual and physical regeneration in Jeddah.

For the moment, some members of the National Assembly told Saharareporters they are eagerly awaiting any legal moves by Yar’Adua’s loyalists as that would enable them embark on more drastic measures against the missing “president.” The options being considered include impeachment or a total invocation of section 143 or 144 of the constitution that would enable Jonathan act fully as president for the rest of Yar’Adua’s tenure.

PoliticsPunch On The Web:federal Executive Council May Be Dissolved Next Week. by Imeobong(op): 1:36pm On Feb 12, 2010
Indications emerged in Abuja on Thursday that the minor cabinet reshuffle carried out by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday came to the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party as a shock.

In the shake-up, the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Michael Aondoakaa (SAN), was moved to the Ministry of Special Duties while the former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Mr. Adetokunbo Kayode (SAN), took over as AGF.

Our correspondent learnt that the party’s leadership, including its National Chairman, Chief Vincent Ogbulafor, was not consulted before the changes were effected.

A source close to the party’s leadership told our correspondent that Jonathan did not raise the matter with the members of the National Working Committee of the party when they visited him in his office on Tuesday night.

The visit took place a few hours after members of the National Assembly passed their resolutions empowering Jonathan to assume the office of President in an acting capacity.

Ogbulafor and members of the NWC had visited the Acting. President at the Vice-President’s Lodge, where they pledged their loyalty to him.

The PDP source said, “We were there for about two hours in the night and throughout our discussion, he (Jonathan) did not raise the matter with us.

“That was why some of us were making calls to journalists on Wednesday to confirm the information that some ministers had been dropped.

“As I told you, we were with the Actingg. President, but the members of the NWC were not told. It came to us as a surprise. This can be verified from some of the calls which some of us made to you members of the media, trying to ascertain whether what we heard was true.”

“It is not that the party is against what the Acting President has done; but in the past, the party was always in the know.

“He is the Acting President and Commander-in-Chief, the buck stops with him.

“We certainly will not control him on how he does his things; he is in charge, but it is fair to let us know, at least for an input.”

Asked if the party was informed about the three governors that left the country on Wednesday for Saudi Arabia to brief President Umaru Yar’Adua on the development, the source said the PDP was not aware of the visit.

The governors are Isa Yuguda (Bauchi); Gabriel Suswam (Benue); and Ibrahim Shema (Katsina).

The source said the visit was not arranged by the PDP but could have been the initiative of members of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum.

Meanwhile, our correspondent gathered that the entire Federal Executive Council may be dissolved next week.

A highly-placed Presidency source disclosed on Thursday that the Ag. President Jonathan may have decided to constitute a new cabinet after an extensive consultation with various stakeholders. The move, it was learnt, would aim at removing cabinet members suspected of divided loyalty, and to inject new blood into government machinery.

PoliticsAondoakaa Begs Akunyili, Says I Was Misquoted by Imeobong(op): 3:08pm On Feb 11, 2010
Special Duties Minister, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa has apologized to the Minister for Information and Communications, Dr. Dora Akunyili over a statement credited to him in an interview with a national daily where he asked Akunyili to “… go confront herself with what happened in NAFDAC.”

Akunyili had issued Aondoakaa a seven days ultimatum to clarify the statement or be dragged to court for libel.

But Aondoakaa who was recently demoted from the exalted position of Attorney General and Minister for Justice to Special Duties Minister in a letter dated February 9, 2010 where he addressed Akunyili as “My Dear Sister” he said he was only praising the performance of the Information Minister at the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, where she served as Director General.

According to the embattled former Attorney General, “while much of the quoted words can be rightly ascribed to me, the import of the last sentence to the effect that “let her go confront herself with what happened in NAFDAC”, was meant to be in the positive

“The correct import of the above quoted words is that the Hon. Minister had already earned a reputation for herself while at NAFDAC and needs not seek to do more by embarking on the present course of action to the detriment of a resolution already adopted unanimously by members of the FEC.”

It would be recalled that Aondoakaa had described Akunyili as a self-seeking office holder who wants to make herself a cheap hero.

Aondoakaa said: "Well, first, she did not understand the constitution and she is not following events in the country. I think she was just trying to make herself a cheap hero out of that. If you see what the Senate said, the Senate made an appeal. She does not need the FEC to make an appeal; she can also make her appeal.

"The Senate said it was appealing. You saw the spokesman of the Senate eventually came out and said they have no power to compel the man. Now, there is even a court decision that says that transmission of letter shall be voluntary. It is within the President.

"Bringing the memo to the FEC is just to make herself an angel. She wants to be seen as a populist. Whatever she wants to gain from it is still personal. None of the FEC members has disrespect for the Vice-President. As far as we are concerned, the VP is our leader and he is leading us. What she is trying to do is self-seeking; let her go and confront herself with what happened in NAFDAC.

"We are working as a team and the AGF is there. You cannot just come out as an island and take a decision and try to rock the boat without even consulting your colleagues. Just because the next day the press will bring you out and make you a hero and others as villains.

"But you will discover that out of the ministers, others are working assiduously to make the VP have full presidential powers without talking to anybody. In fact the public does not know that they are the ones working to make the VP assume full powers to carry the country forward. They don’t go to pages of the papers to talk but they are working tirelessly to make sure that this thing works and the country moves forward."

PoliticsHow Protocol Embarrassed Jonathan by Imeobong(op): 1:59pm On Feb 11, 2010
ACTING President Goodluck Jonathan could not get a triumphant entry into the Federal Executive Council (FEC) chambers meeting, on Wednesday, as the protocol officers did not usher him in, as was done to substantive presidents.

The acting president came into the meeting unannounced against the convention that the protocol officer should announce to the waiting cabinet members that the president had arrived, a call that instantly makes members to stand up to usher in the president.

In an apparent conflict of duty between the two protocol officers, the acting president was left to his own fate.

President Umaru Yar’Adua’s protocol officer, Inuwa Baba, apparently relaxing that his own boss was not around, did not announce the arrival of Jonathan while the acting president’s protocol officer, apparently not used to his new boss’s position, also kept mum.

That was not the only embarrassment that heralded the first FEC meeting Jonathan would chair as acting president.

His protocol officer, instead of guiding him to the seat of the president, chose to usher him to the seat of the vice-president but he (Jonathan)promptly ignored him and went to the seat of the commander-in-chief.

As he made for the seat of the president, there was anger and surprise on the faces of some of the ministers, especially those who were known to have worked against Jonathan becoming acting president.

As expected, at 10.00 a.m. all the ministers were seated, as nobody wanted to test the might of the acting president. It was only Mr Aondoakaa who arrived at 10.19a.m. because he had gone to Jonathan’s office for consultation. After Mr Aondoakaa had settled down, Chief Economic Adviser to Yar’Adua, Dr Tanimu Yakubu, went to meet him and the duo chatted. By 10.21 a.m. the acting president walked in.

From the pattern of interaction, before reporters left the chambers, it was obvious that Yar’Adua’s men, especially Alhaji Sayydi Abba Ruma, Tanimu Yakubu and Mike Aondoakaa, had lost their influence as they were deserted by other ministers who in the past used to cluster around them to curry favour with them.

PoliticsCan Goodluck Fight Curruption With His Wife Facing Money-laundering Charges? by Imeobong(op): 12:03pm On Feb 11, 2010
Immediately after assuming office as the acting president yesterday, Goodluck Jonathan made a national broadcast to the nation. He promised many things, one of which is the prosecution of the war on corruption with renewed vigour. The relevant portion of his broadcast is reproduced below for the benefit of those who did not listen to his speech: “One of the cardinal commitments of this administration is our commitment to Good Governance, Accountability and Transparency. We shall continue to pursue these policy objectives with all the seriousness they deserve. In particular, the war against corruption will be prosecuted more robustly. We will therefore strengthen the capacity of the anti-corruption agencies and give them a free hand to prosecute the anti corruption war.” The question facing the acting president now is whether he can fight a more robust war against corruption when the money-laundering case against his wife, Patience Jonathan, has been in the cooler since he was sworn in as vice president in May 2007. How the acting president handles the issue of his wife’s charges will be an indication of where he is going to take us as a nation. I do not care how the matter is resolved, but a resolution is necessary if the acting president does not want to be held hostage over the matter and if he wants Nigerians to take him seriously. Nigerians want to know what happened to the matter. She was charged with money-laundering offences, the matter is before the courts, we are not aware of a dismissal (aka James Ibori style), where then is the matter? The more robust war against corruption the acting president has promised must include openness. After all, the stolen money belongs to Nigerians and they have a right to know what is being done to the accused looters. The acting president cannot promise a renewed fight against corruption while he is literally sleeping with one. It is in his best interest and that if the nation to have this matter dealt with expeditiously.

The original article dealing with the then charges facing the then vice-president’s wife is reproduced below for ease

EFCC v. PATIENCE JONATHAN (vice president’s Wife): Farida Waziri & EFCC please provide an update

In August 206, the EFCC seized the sum of N104 million from one Mrs. Nancy Ebere Nwosu, an associate of Patience Jonathan. On August 22, 2006, Justice Anwuli Chikere of the Federal High Court, gave EFCC the legal backing to retain the N104 million seized from an associate of Patience Goodluck, the wife of then governor of Bayelsa state, Goodluck Jonathan, who is now the vice president of Nigeria.

The order was to stay in place “pending the conclusion of the investigation of the activities of the said persons in connection with their involvement in the acts of money laundering and other economic and financial crimes related offences.” The EFCC’s position was that Patience Jonathan stole the money from the public coffers of Bayelsa and was trying to launder it through her friend, Mrs. Nancy Ebere Nwosu.

Like a crack addict willing to do anything for a high, Patience Jonathan was not going to give up her addiction to treasury looting simply because Nuhu Ribadu’s EFCC was on her trail. Determined to prove that only mere mortals shivered at the sight of EFCC, she continued with her looting of Bayelsa’s treasury with the full cooperation and assistance of her husband, Goodluck Jonathan, who was the then governor of Bayelsa state. The duo was so successful that on September 11, 2006, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) again seized another $13.5 million dollars (US) from Mrs. Patience Jonathan. Criminal charges were brought against her and Nigerians were awaiting her prosecutionto the full extent of the law. Shortly thereafter and in the face of these serious allegations, the insensitive Olusegun Obasanjo and his PDP that had become a den of thieves, nominated Goodluck Jonathan to be the running mate of Yar'Adua.

Fast forward to post 2007 elections. Goodluck Jonathan is now the vice president of Nigeria, Farida Waziri the head of EFCC and whenever president Yar Adua manages to wake up from his near-permanent slumber he rants about his “zero tolerance” for corruption, despite having an indicted man as his personal secretary and dinning and whining with James Ibori. Farida Waziri would want anyone listening to believe that the presidency does not interfere with EFCC’s decision making process and Yar Adua proclaimed this much immediately after the conviction of Bode George.

After trying to deceive the public by blaming the judiciary alone for the near snail speed prosecution of public officials facing corruption charges and then advocating for psychiatric assessment for public officials who dared to steal more money than she realized from defending criminals and scheming a percentage off the money she is recovering for the banks. Farida Waziri is in the news again. This time around, she is advocating for the death penalty for treasury looters. It will be easier to understand Farida’s cries if she had prosecuted and jailed the corrupt public officials under existing laws and was now seeking the death penalty to discourage reoccurrence. But we all know this is not the case.

Notwithstanding the hypocrisy involved in Farida’s “notice-me” advocacies, I am in complete agreement with her that public officials found guilty of corruption should be tied to the stake and publicly executed. My only concern is she is aware of the fact that she would be among the first to be tied to the stake and executed under the full glare of Nigerians should corruption be made a capital offence? Sorry for the diversion and back to the issue of patience Jonathan.

The case against patience Jonathan has gone cold since Jonathan Goodluck became the vice president of Nigeria. The case has gone cold despite relentless denials of political interference by the EFCC and the presidency, although the president has publicly acknowledged directing investigations into certain allegations when such suits his political purpose. It has gone cold despite Yar Adua’s broken-record equivalent repetitiveness of zero tolerance for corruption, a repetitiveness that leaves Nigerians with two options: the president is either “419”ing Nigerians with his proclamations or lacking the intellectual capacity to comprehend what constitutes corruption.

In the past, Farida Waziri has been quick to blame Sahara Reporters and its ardent followers for drowning out her so called anti-corruption message, despite her trepidations and failure to grant a single no holds barred interview to members of the “non-friendly” press since assuming office. This is her chance. Nigerians want to know what happened to the case of EFCC vs. Patience Jonathan. You can lie to a blind person that there is no oil in the food but you cannot lie that there is no salt.

Aondoakaa was earlier completely removed from office by "Acting President" Goodluck Jonathan; however, forces loyal to ailing president Yar'Adua mobilized against his removal and have possibilty caused the decision to be reversed leading to the move to have have remain in the cabinet in a minor role.

, I think Jonathan is only giving him this ineffective position so as keep him for the slab (prosecution). His time is running out very soon he will be kidnap by the Niger Delta Militant, assassinated and buttered like chicken, ehhhmmmmm, what next should be done to him?
