A plane carrying 103 people has crashed near an airport in Indonesia's West Papua Province. Skip related content At least 20 people have been injured. The incident happened around 11am local time, when the Merpati Boeing 737 lost control approximately 300 meters from the runway at Rendani Airport in Manokwari. The director general of civil aviation Herry Bhakti Singayuda told AFP the plane "hurtled into trees and skidded into a shallow river." Heavy rain and fog were suspected of playing a part in the crash, although experts were on their way to look into the cause. "All the passengers were in a total panic, some even screamed and cried," said passenger Zainal Hayat. He managed to escape by crawling out of a crack in the fuselage and was being treated at hospital with facial injuries. "We flew safely and the plane touched down smoothly on the runway but it just didn't stop. It skidded very fast and I felt it hit something twice before it stopped and tumbled down." "I got out through a crack in the plane near my seat." Witnesses said the left wing broke off as the plane smashed into the trees at the end of the runway. The cockpit was also almost completely separated from the rest of the fusilage. The plane was flying a routine domestic route from Sorong, also in West Papua province, to Manokwari, a distance of about 210 miles. The European Union banned all Indonesia-registered aircraft from flying over its airspace in June 2007. It was acting on a report from the International Civil Aviation Organisation which criticised the country's safety standards. Authoritative sources have told Saharareporters that former Governor James Ibori of Delta State organized yesterday’s visit of four Christian leaders to see ailing Nigerian ruler Umaru Yar’adua in Aso Rock Villa. Archbishop John Onaiyekan, the outspoken Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Bishop David Oyedepo, the high-flying prosperity pastor who is general overseer of the Winners Chapel, Pastor Yusuf Obaje, who served as chaplain in Aso Rock during former President Obasanjo’s tenure, and Reverend Emmanuel Kure of the Throne Room Church in Kaduna made the trip to see Yar’adua. Our sources said that Ibori, who remains in hiding after the EFCC chairperson, Farida Waziri, tipped him off on plans to arrest him for fresh money laundering offences, made contact with several Christian leaders to arrange a “Christian” visit to the gravely ill Yar’adua. Ibori, our sources said, acted at the request of Turai, Yar’adua’s wife, who felt that a visit by a Christian group would be a good move after an earlier visit by Islamic prelates backfired. Besides, Ibori reportedly told her that a visit by Christian leaders would help calm a raging negative storm triggered by the visit by Muslim clerics. One of the Islamic clerics, Datti Ahmad, had issued widely reported threats that Nigeria would experience crisis if Yar’adua was removed from power. “Hajia [Turai] convinced Chief Ibori to arrange some Christian leaders to see her husband, whatever his condition, to douse any lingering controversy – and also to enlist some Christian sympathy for her desire to secure her husband as a continuing relevant factor,” said one source. After Saharareporters broke the news about the composition of the Christian delegation, some newspapers rushed to town with claims that Archbishop Onaiyekan and Bishop Oyedepo had denied being part of the delegation. But Oyedepo today broke his silence in Abeokuta where he had gone to preach at Governor Gbenga Daniels’ birthday event. Besieged by reporters, Oyedepo confessed that he was actually part of the delegation. However, he arrogantly told the newspapers that he does not owe the Nigerian public an explanation for his visit, which he described as private. Our sources disclosed Turai Yar’adua was overwhelmed by the public outcry that greeted the visit to her husband by four imams. A close source to one of the imams revealed that the Islamic leaders had held several meetings with Turai to fine-tune strategies for frustrating “acting President” Goodluck Jonathan’s consolidation of power. Saharareporters has learnt from various political sources in Abuja that Mrs. Yar’adua had lost a lot of sleep over the possibility that her physically ravaged husband could be declared incapacitated by a new cabinet put in place by Jonathan. “She had hoped that the imams’ visit could help ignite some sort of demonstration after Friday prayers in mosques across the north,” said one security source. When that outcome failed to materialize, she asked Ibori to help reach out to credible Christian leaders who could help douse the criticisms trailing the visit by the imams. One source said that Ibori first contacted Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor who declined the offer. He then invited Oyedepo, Onaiyekan and Obaje who agreed to pay a visit. Obaje, who had a falling out with Obasanjo towards the end of his tenure because the ex-president had failed to anoint him governor of Kogi State, was said to be “excited to be part of the delegation.” Saharareporters could not establish why Onaiyekan, who has a reputation for being outspoken about political corruption, and Oyedepo agreed to be part of the delegation. However, our source indicated that Ibori specifically recruited Reverend Kure to “help the Yar’adua group out with some propaganda.” “Perhaps unknown to the other three, Reverend Kure was specially hired to do the same job for Turai Yar’adua that Dr. Datti did after the Muslim clerics’ visit,” said one source. “That job was to present to the public an impression that Yar’adua was making steady improvement and should be expected to return to office.” However, after being grilled by foreign correspondents and local journalists after the encounter with Yar’adua, Kure was forced to admit that Yar’adua could only manage to grunt “Amen” during their prayer session with him. In yet another interview he said that he had closed his eyes to pray and could not tell if Yar’adua actually said Amen. A source told Saharareporters that Onaiyekan was keeping silent for now because he was reportedly too shocked at the condition of Yar’adua. |
KANO—In shah Allah, (by God’s grace), this will be the last time I will embark on night journey as long as I live.’ These were the last words of the late Second Republic governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abubakar Rimi, after an encounter with bandits on Sunday night at Darki and Gadar Janna, 50 kilometres to Kano city. Alhaji Haruna Abdullahi, Rimi’s driver for decades, drove the SUV car that conveyed the late Rimi to Dass in Bauchi State last Friday where he attended the presentation of staff of office to the Emir of Dass, Alhaji Usman Othman, gave a vivid account of how it all happened. “We left Kano on Friday for Dass, Bauchi State, 400 kilometres from Kano. We arrived safely and rested before the coronation of the emir. Rimi, as usual, exchanged pleasantries with friends. He was very cheerful. The following morning, Saturday, we attended the occasion and decided that we should return to Kano that Saturday in spite of the fact that the occasion ended late evening. ”Just as we are about to take-off, a very close friend of his, the Sarkin Nasarawa, Dr. Hassan Ahmed, advised that we should suspend the journey since it was getting late. But Alhaji insisted that we make the journey. We took off about 6.30 p.m. and had a stop-over in Bauchi where Rimi, myself, his younger brother, Alhaji Sule Sa’a and his orderly, Sani Garba, had our Isha’i (late night prayers). ”We left Bauchi about 8.30p.m. and had a smooth journey until about 10 p.m. when we tried to negotiate Kwanar Garko after Jannah Bridge at Darki in the Wudil Local Government Area of Kano State. We saw a car right inside the bridge and two others packed by the side while their occupants were all lying on the ground taking instructions from over 10 men who we later discovered to be armed robbers carrying out an operation. ”As soon as we sighted them, Alhaji Rimi, who was on his mobile phone talking to his daughter who was on her way to London via Dubai, suddenly said ‘Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihin raji’un’ (whoever comes from Allah goes back to him). ”Before then he had spoke n with his son, Alhaji Karami. The robbers ordered me out of the jeep and asked me to take them to the boot of the vehicle where they took all our possessions including all our handsets except that of the orderly who hid his under the seat. ”The robbers, having done with us, asked us to leave but not until the younger brother of the late politician was beaten. As we zoomed off, Rimi asked if anyone was hurt, his younger brother, Sule, showed him his injury on his neck. ”Rimi placed his hand on the injury and told him not to worry as Allah will not forgive the evil men. And retorted that ‘In shah Allah this will be the last time I shall travel in the night as long as I remain alive.” ”Moment later, Rimi began to gasp and was having difficulty in breathing. There and then, he told us to hurry up and take him to Classic Hospital on Abbas Road. On reaching the hospital, a female expatriate medical doctor attended to him. But not satisfied, we rushed him to Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. It was very unfortunate that we had to spend over 15 minutes outside the emergency ward because there was no stretcher to convey him inside the ward. ”Moment later, his brother, Alhaji Sule Sa’a, came out of the hospital and told us that maigida has passed on. It was exactly 11.30 p.m,” he said. |
LAGOS—THE feud between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and General Theophilus Danjuma, played out at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, yesterday, as the former shunned the latter. Obasanjo had arrived from Dakar, Senegal, where he was guest of the Senegalese President, Abdullahi Wade, on the country’s 50th independence anniversary, and as soon as he was told by reporters that his friend, General Danujma, was resting inside the presidential lounge, his countenance changed. His terse response before hopping into the car for his Ota Farm was: “Greet T.Y. Danjuma for me. Tell him I am greeting him.” This was antithetical to the spirit of camaraderie that normally flows among prominent Nigerians who make use of the presidential lounge. Obasanjo had flown into Lagos from Dakar, aboard a private Hawker Siddeley 125 jet, marked ZS-5AH, at about 4.40 pm and told reporters that there was no basis for comparison between Senegal and Nigeria in terms of their achievements in 50 years of nationhood. He situated this on the differing colonial experiences of the two West African countries. Danjuma charges at journalists However, while Obasanjo exchanged banters with aviation reporters on his arrival from Dakar, Danjuma who made for the inner lounge of the presidential wing, wore combative looks and charged at reporters when asked to comment on the state of affairs of the nation. “Get out of here, you journalists,” he charged and later retired into the inner chambers of the VIP lounge. General Danjuma, who is Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee, had arrived the presidential wing in an S-Class Mercedes Benz car, marked RX 547 AAA at about 3:40p.m, and rebuffed journalists earlier attempts to interview him. |
Wise thing to do Jonathan, before they plan coup and overthrow you in your absent |
[quote The Chief Imam of the Abuja National Mosque arrived a little late at the mosque for the sunset prayers but apologised and explained to the faithful that he had gone in company with three other Muslim clerics to see President Yar’Adua in Aso Rock. [quote][/quote]he forgot to tell the faithful that he also drank kunu and tea with Yaradua, probably Yaradua was playing cards with the grandchildren when they met him first, so they have to wait for him to finish a round, hence thier reason for coming late. wonders shall never end, , shame on you |
LAGOS — The Nigerian government has asked for charges to be dropped against the former head of its anti-graft body who is on trial for failing to declare his assets while in office, his lawyer said Thursday. "The federal government filed the application to discontinue the trial of Nuhu Ribadu before the code of conduct bureau. The application will be approved on April 8," Femi Falana told AFP. Ribadu, a senior police officer, was appointed by former president Olusegun Obasanjo to head the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He was removed as head in controversial circumstances in December 2007 and accused of not declaring his assets while in office in compliance with the 1999 constitution. Anti-graft campaigners say that Ribadu fell foul of powerful former state governors by trying to bring them to justice over embezzlement charges, arguing that the anti-corrption war has lost steam since his removal. Transparency International still ranks Nigeria as one of most corrupt countries in the world. ‘The Special One’ has sensationally quit the Nerazzurri for the Blancos… Apr 1, 2010 11:30:00 AM Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho has sent shockwaves through the world of football by resigning as coach of Inter, and revealing he will be the next coach of Real Madrid. Mourinho has cited a number of reasons for his decision to leave the Serie A leaders. They include his troubled relationship with the Italian media, his recent falling out with Mario Balotelli, the discovery that his home telephone had been bugged by club president Massimo Moratti, as well as an “offer he couldn’t refuse” from Real Madrid. ‘The Special One’ arrived in Italy in the summer of 2008, but despite winning the Scudetto in his first season at Inter he has never seen eye-to-eye with the local press or with rival coaches and personnel. Only on Tuesday, Mourinho told the English media that he was “not happy in Italian football, because I don't like it and they don't like me”, further fuelling already red-hot rumours that he was to quit Serie A in the summer. Perhaps this was the warning sign of what was around the corner, but this morning’s announcement has still taken everyone by complete surprise. “I have resigned as coach of Inter with immediate effect. I leave now. I told my players last night after the game [against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League]. I then told Massimo Moratti while he was entertaining some oiligarchs in the hospitality suite,” Mourinho told Goal.com. “The truth is that I have had enough of Italy. I am [the] best coach in [the] world, a phenomenon, but I have been treated with absolutely zero respect from day one. “Instead the media shows respect to losers. Ranieri has won just a little tin cup in 80 years and they speak of him as a God. They talk of him being Italy coach after Lippi! Leonardo has won zeru tituli, Macaroni couldn’t even beat Fulham! “All I see is intellectual prostitution. Inter are treated by the media as if we are murderers. Tell me, who caused Calciopoli? Who has been robbed by referees for the last four years? Whose 75-year-old president goes out with 18-year-olds? Not Inter! Mourinho went on to explain that his bust-up with troubled teenage superstar Mario Balotelli also played a role in his exit. The two fell out a number of weeks ago, and Mourinho had declined to select the young forward for six games since, citing Balotelli's refusal to apologise as the reason for his continued exclusion. “Balotelli is a punk,” sniped the 47-year-old. “He is the best talent I have ever worked with, but his head is all messed up. You want to know why we fell out? Well, I will tell you. The day before we played Catania, Balotelli turned up for training wearing an AC Milan thong and David Beckham bra. “I sent him home and told him I was disgusted with his behaviour. He refused to say sorry, and said I have no sense of humour. I am a professional and I have no time for such punks. He is a spoilt child. Milan deserve him. But of course they'll only want him when he's 35.” Mourinho was this week blasted by Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini, who claimed that he wasn't enough of a father-figure to effectively handle the teenage Balotelli. Upon hearing the dramatic news of Mourinho's departure, Zamparini brashly announced to Goal.com: "I was right! The man has no class and no sense of man-management. "The man is not even a man, he's a child. Balotelli behaved better than he did. "Good riddance to him, I say. He loves England so much? Well, let him get on his boat and sail back to the land of the pirates!" Mourinho went on to give details of how president Massimo Moratti had attempted to talk him out of resigning, and that he almost changed his mind until he was “betrayed”. “Moratti begged me to stay at least until the end of the season. I almost agreed but then I dropped my phone onto the floor and this little chip fell out with ‘Telecom Italia’ writing on it. “I felt betrayed. I have worked day and night for this club for almost two years. It makes me sick that they would bug my phone.” Finally, Mourinho revealed some even more startling news – he will be Real Madrid’s coach for next season. “Yes, it is true,” he confirmed. “My agent called me and said that Manuel Pellegrini will be sacked in May. The job is mine if I say ‘yes’, and so I say to everyone now: ‘Yes’. “It is an offer I couldn’t refuse. Clearly, Mr Perez at least can see that I'm still the Special One.” When pressed on players he would like to sign for Real Madrid, Mourinho stressed: “That would be disrespectful of me, but I will tell you one thing. Ricardo will come with me.” It is unclear whether the tactician was referring to Ricardo Quaresma, but one thing is for certain: Jose Mourinho is no longer coach of Inter. April Fool |

…Linked with the disappearance of over N70 Billion Security Votes …Aondoakaa also fingered Top security sources in Abuja have hinted Pointblanknews.com that the international passports of former Agriculture minister, Sayyad Abba Ruma, and ex Economic Adviser to Umaru Yar'Adua, Tanimu Kurfi, have been seized. The move, it was learnt, is to stop the two top guns of the Yar'Adua's cabal from fleeing abroad and compromise efforts by the Goodluck Jonathan's administration to hold some former cabinet members accountable. The trio of Ruma, Aondoakaa and Kurfi are alleged to have been responsible for the disappearance of over N70 Billion from the security votes of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua between the months of November 2009 and January 2010. Ruma and Kurfi allegedly disbursed huge sums of money running into billions while Yar'Adua was in Saudi Arabia. Specifically, before the budget was 'signed' Ruma allegedly spent over N16Billion without recourse to the then Vice President. As Economic Adviser, Kurfi gave the go-ahead to the likes of Ruma. Sources told Pointbanknews.com that while part of the N70 Billion went into the fight to sustain the Yar’Adua Presidency during his over 90 days in a Saudi Arabia Hospital, majority of the sums went into private foreign accounts operated by the trio in Saudi Arabia, Isle of man and Mauritius. The trio was also the custodians of the multi billion naira propaganda war chest used during Yar'Adua's stay in hospital, and after he was brought to Abuja. They were alleged sponsors of the likes of Tanko Yakassai, and his co-travellers who made several divisive remarks, and eventually went to court to challenge Jonathan's emergence as Acting President. Pointblanknews.com also gathered that the EFCC is looking at the dosier. A source close to the EFCC said on friday " i am not aware of the passport seizure but we were waiting for security reports on some of them, and if there are evidence of mismanagement we will act. There is no doubt that eventually some of them will end up with us' Pointblanknews.com could not confirm as at press time how many of the ex cabinet members are under scrutiny by the security agencies, but another source hinted that former special duties minister, Mike Aondoakaa, ex power minister, Remi Babalola, ex oil minister, Rilwan Lukman are under scrutiny.
