Nigerian football's crisis has taken a bizarre twist with an attempt to appoint a dead referee for Sunday's match between Warri Wolves and Giwa FC.

It comes as Chris Giwa continues to challenge Nigerian Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick.

A Nigerian court has ruled Giwa should replace the Fifa-recognised Pinnick and in a move to wrest control he has named the weekend's top-flight officials.

However, among those selected is Wale Akinsanya, who died in January.

Giwa's NFF rival group sent notice of its actions to the chief operation officer of the league management company on Wednesday.

It has raised the possibility that two sets of match officials - those appointed by Giwa's group and those appointed by the NFF - could turn up for the fixtures.

Football's world governing body Fifa issued a warning last week saying Pinnick and his board must continue in charge of the NFF or Nigeria would face a global suspension.

Meanwhile, the Giwa-led faction has rejected a reconciliation committee set up by the country's sports minister Solomon Dalung to resolve issues within the NFF.

In a statement signed by the group's chairman of chairmen, Effiong Johnson, it urged Nigerians to disregard the action of the minister.

Former NFF boss Ibrahim Galadima is the head of the seven-man reconciliation committee, which has one week to submit its report.

A therapy that retrains the body's immune system to fight cancer has provoked excitement after more than 90% of terminally ill patients reportedly went into remission.

White blood cells were taken from patients with leukaemia, modified in the lab and then put back.

But the data has not been published or reviewed and two patients are said to have died from an extreme immune response.

Experts said the trial was exciting, but still only "a baby step."

The news bubbled out of the American Association for the Advancement of Science's annual meeting in Washington DC.

The lead scientist, Prof Stanley Riddell from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle, said all other treatments had failed in these patients and they had only two-to-five months to live.

He told the conference that: "The early data is unprecedented."

In the trial, cells from the immune system called killer t-cells were taken out of dozens of patients. The cells normally act like bombs destroying infected tissue.

The researchers genetically modified the t-cells to engineer a new targeting mechanism - with the technical name of chimeric antigen receptors - to target acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Prof Riddell told the BBC: "Essentially what this process does is, it genetically reprograms the T-cell to seek out and recognise and destroy the patient's tumour cells.

"[The patients] were really at the end of the line in terms of treatment options and yet a single dose of this therapy put more than ninety percent of these patients in complete remission where we can't detect any of these leukaemia cells."

But one cancer expert told me they still felt in the dark on the full significance of the study, as the data is not available.

Also seven of the patients developed cytokine release syndrome so severe that they required intensive care, and a further two patients died.

While those odds may be acceptable if facing terminal cancer, the side-effects are much greater than conventional leukaemia treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which work in the majority of patients.

The field of immunotherapy - harnessing the immune system to attack cancer - is coming of age.

The significance of today's development is hard to ascertain while the data is unpublished - but the field is undoubtedly making giant strides.

Drugs called checkpoint inhibitors, such as pembrolizumab and ipilimumab, take the brakes off the immune system so it attacks cancer.

They are already being used by doctors.

And other experimental techniques are coming to fruition to allow doctors to change a patient's own cells to engineer a designer immune system to kill cancer.

It's an exciting time that is likely to see immunotherapy soon join chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery as major weapons in the fight against cancer.

There is also a big difference between using such approaches on a blood cancer like leukaemia and "solid" tumours such as breast cancer.

An Islamic State militant carried out a public "execution" of his mother because she asked him to leave the group, activists say.

Ali Saqr, 21, killed his mother, Lena al-Qasem, 45, outside the post office in Raqqa, Syria, eyewitnesses said.

Raqqa has served as IS' de facto capital since the group captured the city in August 2013.

IS does not tolerate any dissent and imposes brutal punishments, often carried out in public.

The UK-based monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) and the activist group Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently reported the incident.

Lena al-Qasem had reportedly told her son that the US-led military alliance fighting IS would "wipe out" the group, and tried to convince him to leave the city with her.

Nigerian football official Ibrahim Abubakar has been shot dead by armed robbers at his house in Abuja on Wednesday.

Abubakar was head of protocol for the country's football federation.

Former Arsenal striker Nwankwo Kanu has described Abubakar's death as "bad and sad news" on social media.

Local media have reported that Abubakar is survived by his wife and three children. He will be buried in Kaduna in the north-west of the country.

The Super Eagles media officer Oluwatoyin Ibitoye said the killing was "shocking, devastating and tragic".

Hell was let loose yesterday, Sunday, August 30, at the United Methodist Church, in the Oshodi area of Lagos.



The Punch reports that members of the church rejected their pastor and chased him away for allegedly impregnating his housemaid who is also a member of his church.

According to report, the pastor, Barkuma Andrew, was stopped from leading the church seven months ago when the housemaid, Grace, had complications after aborting the pregnancy. The pastor lives with his wife, children, wife’s cousin, Favour, and Grace in a three-bedroom flat inside the church premises.

It was reported that the members had pleaded with the Central Conference of the church in Taraba State to help look into the alleged incident. However, when the district did not do anything about it, the congregation sought the service of another pastor three weeks ago. The congregation got to church at about 10am yesterday for Sunday service only to see that Andrew and some “unknown” people had commenced the service.


This sprouted the anger of the members of the church as they chased pastor Andrew and his folks out of the church. Men from the Makinde police division, including the DPO, were said to have intervened after the incident was reported at the station. A member of the church and a former secretary to Andrew, Moses Sherima, said that the pastor sent his wife to her village when he impregnated Grace. He said:

“My room is opposite pastor’s apartment and I was his secretary. When he started dating that girl (Grace), I called his wife’s cousin, Favour, on the matter. She said Grace used to tell her whenever the pastor had sex with her. At a point, I had to move upstairs when I could no longer bear it. The day that abortion happened, I was sleeping inside my room when I heard Grace screaming. I rushed there and saw blood coming out from her private parts. When the wife came back from one of her numerous journeys, he told her to send Favour away.”

Another church member, John Komboroh, said the church was embarrassed by Andrew’s conduct, adding that they were tired of his leadership. He said:

“The petition of adultery against the pastor had been sent to the bishop at the Central Conference. He came here, but did not do anything about it. That was why we wrote to the main body, the Southern Conference to give us another pastor. His (Andrew’s) action is an embarrassment to us. We don’t want him again.”

The new pastor of the church, Reverend James Sunday, said:

“We were about to start our service this morning when we met the old pastor and some unknown people already holding the service. I calmed down my people to avoid chaos.”

Another resident and a female member, who identified herself only as Blessing, said the pastor had once made sexual advances to her.

“My husband is not always at home. The pastor would call me in the night and asked if I had slept. One day he entered my room and gave me a soft slap on my back. I had only the wrapper on me. I was surprised and told my neighbours.”



When contacted on the telephone around 1pm on Sunday, Andrew said he was in a meeting and promised to get back to The Punch on the incident. He told The Punch Metro that he was still at the meeting when he was called back around 5pm.

Meanwhile, a South African pastor, Pastor Peniel, is popularly known for a number of strange acts. He had fed his congregation live snake. He had turned human hair into food for the consumption of the church members.

The Satanic Temple unveiled a controversial goat-headed bronze monument at a secret Detroit venue on Saturday.
The 8½-foot-tall Baphomet monument shows Satan with horns, hooves, wings and a beard.
Backed by an inverted pentagram, it weighs more than a ton and is flanked by statues of two young children gazing up at the creature.
The Satanic Temple, a group that advocated for the separation of church and state, was originally going to host the statue's revealing at a popular restaurant until the owner backed out after receiving threats.

Instead, the group held a secret, ticketed event at an undisclosed location in the city.
The group's co-founder Lucien Greaves told the Associated Press that people had threatened to burn the venue down prior to the unveiling.
WJBK reported that hundreds of people showed up for the event, including protesters who are strongly against the group.
The statue was to have been unveiled July 25 at Bert's Market Place in Detroit's Eastern Market district, but Bert Dearing said he gave the group back it's $3,000 rental fee when he learned who booked the place.
'Detroit is a very religious area,' Dearing said.
'When I rented the place, I just thought it was a church. I didn't know about the unveiling of a statue. We weren't aware they were into devil worshiping.'

The Satanic Temple Detroit chapter founder Jex Blackmore has said the group doesn't worship Satan but does promote individuality, compassion and views that differ from Christian and conservative beliefs.
The statue was designed and built at a cost of more than $100,000 and had been planned for the state Capitol in Oklahoma City until Oklahoma's Supreme Court banned religious displays, including a monument of the Ten Commandments on Capitol grounds.
Greaves said the statue will not remain in Detroit and that The Satanic Temple wants to erect it outside Arkansas' Statehouse in Little Rock where a Ten Commandments monument also is planned.
Detroit was selected for the unveiling because The Satanic Temple in the city has a 'strong congregation,' Greaves said.
'We just have a good community over there.'

Blackmore said Detroit has more than 200 registered members.
The group erected a display in December outside Michigan's state Capitol in Lansing.
The 'Snaketivity Scene' featured a snake offering a book called 'Revolt of the Angels' as a gift.
The snake was wrapped around the Satanic cross on the 3-feet-by-3-feet display. Like other religious displays, it was taken down each night.

North Korea is accusing the US of spreading the Ebola virus, claiming it has been “bent on the development of bio-weapons” in order to achieve world supremacy.

The secretive state reacted strongly to the Ebola outbreak by closing its border to tourists and quarantining anyone who does enter.

Now, a report by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) is claiming an aide to ex-President Reagan informed them the US had invented a progenitor of Ebola virus “for the purpose of launching a biological warfare”.

The aide was named as Roberts, who The Washington Post said could be a reference to Paul Craig Roberts, an econmoist.

Mr Roberts recently published a blog post entitled ‘Is The US Government The Master Criminal Of Our Time?’ which cited work published by two academics on Ebola.


Only a few weeks after a UN resolution condemned the country’s human right’s record, The KCNA criticised the US for its own human rights record.

The article said the US had given $140 million (£89 million) to a pharmaceutical company for research into the virus and chose Africa as a bio-weapon testing ground. It credited this claim to an unnamed Liberian professor.

It also claimed that the “US Department of Health and Human Services” admitted that the US “imperialists” have long conducted “vivisections with fatal epidemics, inflicting untold sufferings on mankind”.

It added: “Russian, Singaporean and American newspapers criticised that the US developed anti-Ebola virus vaccine through experiment on Ebola contagion, but has prevented this vaccine from being known to the world, only for its own interests.”

It also went on to claim that the Aids pandemic was also created by the US. In one final accusation, it said: “As already known to everyone, the US is the world's biggest nuke possessor.”

A 56-year-old pastor, Paul Horner, has been jailed in the United States for allegedly refusing to join a gay couple despite the legalization of gay marriage across the nation.

Horner of the Christian Proctor Church in Vermont, was given a sentence of one-year jail term in the federal prison.

Handing down the sentence, Honorable Myron Danus said, “Religious freedom goes both ways, Mr. Horner.

“It is not your place to deny individuals the same rights that everyone else has, rights that were passed down and agreed upon in a court of law, the ultimate court, the Supreme Court.

“It is not your decision whether or not you agree with the law but more importantly that you follow it and enforce it.”

Speaking to journalists after the court session, Horner’s lawyer said, “We are currently disputing the guilty verdict and I am confident my client will be a free man here shortly,” said attorney Tom Downey.

“Horner was just using his best judgement according to his rights and religious freedom in this country.”

Investigators discovered that Horner’s church is registered with the state as a “religious corporation” which is only entitled to joining “one-man-one-woman marriages as defined by the Holy Bible.”

City officials are of the view that the church authorities must comply with state and federal regulations since it is also registered as a for-profit business.

President of the Vermont Family Research Committee, Steve Shand, said it is “open season on Americans who refuse to bow to the government’s redefinition of marriage.”

“Homosexuals are gay. Why should Christian ministers be forced to perform and celebrate any marriage that conflicts with their beliefs? It’s a slippery slope my friend. Pretty soon these same pastors will be forced to wed animals or kitchen appliances. This is not my America!”

According to NBC, Gwen Hawkins who is president of the LGBT Pride Center in Vermont said she is happy with the guilty verdict.

Hawkins said, “We just want the same rights as everyone else and this guilty verdict sets a great precedent.

“These fanatical Christians base their life on one verse in the Bible but they seem to forget the other 99% of the verses in the book. For example, why can’t we stone to death Bristol Palinfor having a baby out of wedlock?
