Wale Igbintade writes that the influence of close family members and associates in top judicial and political offices on the appointment of judges is increasingly eroding the independence of the Nigerian judiciary.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, last week swore in 12 judges into the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory. Among the judges was his daughter-in-law, Ariwoola Oluwakemi Victoria.

An investigation by a human rights activist and former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof Chidi Odinkalu revealed that among Nigeria’s first eight indigenous CJNs, only the first, Justice Adetokunbo Ademola, had a child, Philip Adenekan Ademola, who became a judge.

However, many of their successors since Mohammed Uwais’s retirement in June 2006 have used their positions as heads of the NJC to promote their own children to high judicial offices, disregarding potential conflicts of interest.

For instance, a former CJN appointed two sons to the high court bench and another two to positions in the registry of different courts in the country.

The only requirement for judicial appointment in Nigeria as spelt out in Sections 250 and 271 of the 1999 Constitution is a minimum of 10 years of enrolment as a lawyer in Nigeria. There are no prescribed skill, character, or integrity thresholds.

In 2020, the NJC was alleged to have advertised 15 vacancies for the FCT High Court but nominated 34 persons for appointment, with all of the non-advertised nominations going to the children or relatives of judicial insiders.

Rule 8.3 of the Judicial Code of Conduct established by the NJC contains this explicit prohibition: “A judge who takes advantage of the judicial office for personal gain or for gain by his or her relative or relation abuses power.”

As a rule under the Basic Principles, “any method of judicial selection shall safeguard against judicial appointments for improper motives.”

In 2022, human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), revealed that “two years ago, a candidate who scored zero in the NJC interview was made a judge.”

A Professor of Law, Itsejuwa Sagay, (SAN), who chaired the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption (PACAC) in the administration of Muhammadu Buhari, once faulted the rate with which “sons and daughters of retired and serving judges and justices are being nominated for appointment into sensitive judicial positions at the expense of more qualified candidates without privileged support and backing.”

The point about judicial capture is that it does not pretend to put the institutions of the judiciary to any transcendental or societal goals.

Leading judicial figures and political leaders are now insisting on making their spouses, mistresses, children or family members judges.

Currently, it is common to see that state governors ensuring that judges serving in their territories receive choice properties and other benefits, which they often do not declare as part of their clandestine plot to capture the judiciary.

This is why Odinkalu recently said: “The alacrity with which parents and paramours in high judicial or political office in Nigeria suddenly discover these days that the hidden genius of their scions or sleep mates deserve elevation to the highest levels of judicial office tasks every calculus of probability beyond the realm of plausibility. The only explanation for this pattern is that judicial office is hawked as a transactional token or filial favour, or for genital propinquity.”

3. Mark 3:28-30 - "Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin—for they were saying, 'He has an unclean spirit.'"
4. Luke 12:10 - "And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven."
5. 1 Timothy 1:20 - "Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme."

I need not remind you that your iffah often request for human sacrifices to appease it's anger and those that desecrated the shrine of Iffah are often offered as sacrifices to the gods.

Again, your failure to grasp this simple reality of blasphemy across major religions of the world shows the shallowness of your knowledge. When you add this to the fact that you are destitute of character, it becomes abundant clear that you are not a person with culture and education.

Eight students and three teachers of ASCL Staff Comprehensive Secondary School, Ajaokuta, Kogi State were kidnapped yesterday.

This unfortunate incident happened around 3 pm yesterday along Okene-Itobe road as the students were returning from a quiz competition in Okene.

The bandits thereafter set the forest on fire to make it nearly impossible for the security officers to trail them.
They have since called requesting for ₦20,000,000 per-head ransom.

Urgent intervention of the state government is required.

Our Most Revered Father, The Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, HRM. Alhaji. Dr. Ado Ibrahim has passed on.

He died in the early hours of this morning at the age of 94 after reigning for 26 years.

He ascended the thrown on the 2nd of June, 1997.

May God Almighty forgives his shortcomings, bless and accepts his soul in Janatul firdaus. Amin.

May the Almighty God grant us all the fortitude to bear this great loss.

So, the other two senatorial districts are more than the Igalas combined.

As predicted by LEADERSHIP, the former Auditor General for Local Governments in Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has won the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primary election held in the State om Friday.
Ododo, who scored a total of 78,704 votes, won the direct primary election with a wide margin to defeat six other contestants in the governorship race.

LEADERSHIP recalls that about seven other aspirants including the state’s deputy governor, Edward Onoja, Governor Yahaya Bello’s Chief of Staff, Pharm. Mohammed Asuku, had earlier withdrawn from the gubernatorial race on the eve of the primary election.

Ododo, who won with a very wide margin, defeated the distant runner-up, Barr. Mohammed Ozigi Salami, who scored 1,506 votes while the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Smart Adeyemi, scored the least number of votes – 311. Below is the total number of votes received by all the contestants-

Firstly, I must acknowledge that I am a Ronaldo fan and till tomorrow, I will be. The reality I acknowledged after Argentina made it past Croatia was that 'might' be Messi was a better player to Ronaldo. And even today, something deep down tells me, probably he is the real GOAT after all.

However, with all sincerity, if Argentina made it past Round 16, Quarter final and now the final, it is not because of Messi, it's because of the Goalkeeper.
I feel FIFA should have acknowledged this fact and recognize the Keeper's contributions.
Again, if we truly want to be objective, we will realize that compensating Messi in 2014 with player of the tournament even when he wasn't deserving of it and denying Mbappe similar compensation after his lawfully earned Goldenbooth amounts to double standard or speaking with both sides of your mouth.

Again, Messi might have accomplished more than CR7 and probably is even the GOAT, the fact still remains that I remain ever sympathetic to CR7 because all his awards were duly earned without pampering or unnecessary sympathy from any body. This is evident in FIFA acknowledging that XAVI should have won the 2010 Balon d or. Again, for winning Copa America while Ronaldo did not enjoy similar privilege for winning a more prestigious title in Euro. Moreover, Lewa should have won it that year.
