IamaNigerianGuy:

Performance-based remuneration is good but it must be done in a way that the staff won't be at the receiving end just as I have in my place

HRtechnique: you have failed to give an acceptable and true definition of 'best practice'. Conjuring standards from thin air to suit the whims and caprices of management and business owners is the reason why Nigerian businesses sector is backward. Taking advantage of lax laws is in no way best practice.

Best practice refers to standard acceptable procedure in an industry that is legal, ethical and fair, and which contribute to effectively and efficiently meeting a company's objectives by aiding it's operations.

Back to the OPs question: there is nothing wing with performance based enumeration. In fact, there is everything right with it: this is the model most large companies and multinationals employ with their staff.
Two points to note: first, you must be paid a base salary. This must be commensurate with your position, experience and job load. Second, the renumeration for meeting targets must be consistently applied. If you exceed expectations by 300%, you should be paid a 300% bonus. There are variations on this but this can serve as a template. Any substantial deviation from this implies you are working for an exploitative management.

Hello peeps,

Sorry that I was offline for some while which made me unable to directly respond to a lot of issues raised by you guys in your comments.

To start with, the company in question is an electricity distribution company, one of the disCos in the country and reason why I mentioned unrealistic target in my earlier post is that the electricity business involves a lot of complexities.

There is what is called the ATC&C loss which details the losses you suffers such as commercial and technical losses. Due to the type of dilapidated technical network we operate here, we suffer a lot of losses in the network even before distributing power to customer's homes.

So when customers are billed without factoring these complexities all in the name of reducing your ATC&C losses within a time frame, you have customers with maybe a room being billed 15k or even 30k in some instances when actually the customer couldn't have consumed maybe more 4k or 6k for that month.

Your target for the month will be based on such billing examples above and tell me, how do you get a customer to pay a bill of say 20k or 30k for a single room or shop? This is where the issue of unrealistic target lies!

At the end of the month, what you get as salary is now based on the percentage of what your customers pays from your target. For you to make a good performance, you must work extra mile by ensuring that your customers especially the unmetered estimated customers pays what they are given for the month as bill or something close to it so that you can get a good salary at the end of the month.

How is the salary prepared and paid? Let's say your full salary with all allowances and entitlements for the month should be 100k and you made only 40% of your performance target, it is that 40% that will be used to calculate your salary to give you 40k at the end of the month and same also applies to your pension deductions which both fluctuates monthly. Note in this scenario, there is nothing like basic salary because every component of your salary is touched.

While government is hammering the disCos to reduce their ATC&C losses without massive investments by them to strengthen and upgrade their networks and embark on massive metering of customers to drastically reduce the commercial and collection losses in the sector within an unrealistic timeframe, customers would forever be at the mercy of estimated billings which does no one any good.

Hello everyone,

Am here to seek experts advise on an issue that is really giving everyone of us involved concerned.

I work in a service industry that provides a very important product to a vast numbers of customers within the industry.

Due to problems usually faced in getting revenue sales, the company adopted a performance based remuneration system recently that ensures that salaries are paid to employees based on what their stations makes as revenue vis-à-vis percentage of revenue generated against target given.

With this system in place, monthly salaries dropped drastically and pay day that usually ought to be a happy day for everyone now turned into a day of sadness because of unrealistic targets sets for everyone/stations upon which ones salaries are based on.

Recently, some months payslips were given to all staff, it was revealed that we no longer have a basic salary, assuming your monthly performance is 60%, every component of your salary will be paid on 60%. Should it be 40%, that means every component of your salary will be calculated based on 40%!

My question now is, in an environment where performance-based remuneration is in place, are basic salary and pension deductions also subject to performance? Pension deductions that should be our future is also subjected to monthly performance.

HR gurus in the house and folks familiar with performance-based remuneration, please share your thoughts on this.

CC. Mods, please do me a great help by kindly pushing this to front page.

Thanks

Observation

One of my major concern is that the blog has not really featured much in searches whenever I try to search for it on Google.

I read it somewhere that before Google can start picking up a new blog could run into three months, which I don't know how true it is.

Experience bloggers, please share more light on this and how can I make it more visible in Google searches biko.

Thanks guys for your comments. I guess I should set the records straight on something, I don't do or indulge in copy and paste publishing in my blogging to arrive at over 400 posts within a month.

What I do is to look for ideal content across the web, read it properly and now rewrite in my own words. In the process of rewriting, I end up making mine shorter, straight to the point and still retains the main gist.

On an average, I publish 4-6 posts per day and in instances where a full article from another source is to be used, due recognition is given to the source owner and this also adds to the credibility of the blog.
Webmasters / Re: My Two Months Blogging Experience so far by infoblaster: 12:22pm On Jul 15, 2017
The blog basically is a news and entertainment blog but has more emphasis on sports reporting which is a strong unifying factor across the world. With the football season on break, you will agree with me that any blogger who has a passion for football stories will have his hands full with different breaking news.

On an average, I published about six posts per day, there are days I have more that this figure and also some days I only have just a single post.

Good morning guys,

I have wanted to share my experience with you guys since last month but for one reason or the order has not been able to pull myself together due to tight schedule on the need to attend to some competing issues.

Have always wanted to be a blogger but for reasons of procrastination, sees myself not living up to the task for years. I had once created one on blogger, but after sometime, discontinued it due to the need to always update it.

However, in the month of April, I was determined to start blogging headlong due to my passion for news and internet which I believed I can use to run a better news blog that will deliver top quality news content to a wide audience on the internet.

I registered a domain name and self hosted my site on WordPress and published my first post on the 13th May, 2017. Ever since, I have been consistent with my posts on the blog and has been able to attract a fairly small following during my two months experience.

1. As at now, my blog has a steady and consistent over 200 visitors daily with an all time of 335 achieved during the week.

2. Within 2 months of blogging, I have over 400 published articles on the blog.

3. The blog has over 120 comments from audience that found it and appreciated what's on offer in it.

4. The blog has attracted visitors from 137 countries of the world during the past two months.

5. No major promotion has been done on it other than sharing published posts on my Facebook and Twitter profiles.

6. The blog still runs on a freemium theme which does not displays pictures on the homepage except when a story is clicked before you see the pictures.

Guys, with this statistics, how have I fared in terms of performance?

Please find attached some screenshots from the blog to tell the story better.

Let me wait to hear from you guys before I proceed on other things I want to share.

I was going through the Facebook profile of a friend, who out of excitement, uploaded the pictures of the newly crowned unified world boxing champion, Anthony Joshua on his wall and praised him for showing the dominant Nigerian spirit in him.

A guy, named Ogbe Ifeanyinchukwu Eric, a graduate of Federal University of Technology, Minna, according to his Facebook profile, came to dispute the fact that Anthony Joshua is not a Nigerian. He did not stop at that, he gave his own account of what citizenship is and ended up abusing everyone that tried to correct him.

Please enjoy yourself by going through the funny drama that played out today on Facebook today over Anthony Joshua's victory

Thanks a lot my sister for your kind and swift advise.

Gracias

As you have explained to us here, explain to the visa officer.
It is not unusual to pay for a conference until after getting the visa. It ia like saying you want to pay Hosp bills before getting a visa. It can swing both ways and the visa officers know this.

Regarding CBP and POE and payment onsite, you can print out the conference conditions worst thing, they will call the conference organizers.

Another thing, make sure you distinctively state the purpose of your trip. A conference is different from a training.

As per ds160, your company is sponsoring the trip, you can explain the dynamics and level of sponsorship at the interview
Travel / Re: USA Visit Visa Part 2 by infoblaster: 12:41am On Jan 27, 2017
Hello guys,

I want to attend a conference in the US and need you guys candid advise.

I got the consent of my HR for a partial sponsorship of a conference, company would be responsible for plane ticket while I pay for the conference fees and hotel in the states since it is not part of HR training plan for this year but very relevant to my day-day work.

Paying for the conference and not attending attracts 50% reduction in refunds and since the money is much, I probably will like to wait till after getting visa before commiting myself to such expenses. So my question is.

1. Who can I say is sponsoring the trip when filling my DS- 160 form or if asked by any VO on who will finance the trip since it is to be co funded by me and the company. Remember I say, company will provide me with plane ticket.

2. Please how do I convince VO if asked for my letter of invitation/registration to the conference that I rather want to wait till after if granted visa before making it so as not to incur huge loses?

3. Going for a conference with the aim of making onsite payment for registration, won't one encounter a challenge with CBP at POE?

The gurus in the house, abeg una kind attention is needed here.

Thanks.

Politics / 3 Years Of Power Sector Privatisation In Nigeria, How Has It Fared? by infoblaster: 4:06am On Nov 01, 2016
Today makes it exactly 3 years that the power sector was privatised by the Federal Government which was designed to usher in the kind of revolution witnessed in the telecom in the power sector.

How has the various DisCos and Gencos fared within the past 3 years? Has Nigeria achieved the major aim of relinguishing the power sector to private hands to increase national power generation and boost efficiency in the sector? Do you support the school of thought that believes the new power owners have all lived below expectations and as such, the whole exercise should be reversed by the government?

Please, let us analyse this issue clinically and probably set agenda on what is needed to move the power sector forward for Pres. Buhari and Fashola.

Happy new month guys.

But really, the Oba hardly leaves the palace. It's rare.
They said whenever an Oba is crowned something strange must happen.
The day Oba EwuareII was coronated harmattan blew at least my side. I don't know if it was a coincidence o.
In Benin, the Oba has been deitified. That was how someone told me that Oba Akenzua never entered plane/car, that he will just appear at the said place. Imagine!

Hahahahahahaha.

There are so many myths that Binis weaves around their Oba. While some are real, alot are just too overated.

Imagine someone arguing that Oba does not leave the palace as if the palace is a prisonyard for him
Culture / Benin History 101... Myth About Oba Of Benin Bursted! by infoblaster: 8:11pm On Oct 24, 2016
There is this popular belief held by vast majority of Edo people that the Oba of Benin does not travel out or sleeps outside the palace.

FACT CHECK!

Oba Akenzua 11 was the first Oba of Benin to visit the United Kingdom. He visited England on 5th October, 1950, with his wife, Queen Idada, on the invitation of the English monarch, Queen Elizabeth 11 who thereafter reciprocated the visit by making a stopover at the Benin Airport on 5th February, 1956, while on a visit to Nigeria.

How this story developed or grew wings to become a myth held widely by all sons and daughters of Edo i do not know when in history, an Oba had once travelled abroad, but this is fact! Being an Oba, Emir or Igwe does not confines one to a prison-like lifestyle where one can no longer socialise or go outside ones kingdom.

This clarification becomes necessary because very soon, some Professors and Mr/Mrs know-all of Benin Kingdom history would accuse the present Oba of violating customs and tradition whichever day he decides to travel abroad.
