Post-harvest handling is key but how many of our local farmers are into it? l give you example of one of the local markets in Anambra State, lfite-Ogwari to be precise and as most farmers markets in the South-East operates every four days, fruits like pawpaw, avocado pear etc are bought cheapest in the evenings when the market is rounding off because it makes no sense for their owners to take back home when they would be harvesting another set of fruits in 3 days time for the next market neither do most know how to preserve its freshness for the next market day. Even at the wholesale fruit market in Ketu/Mile 12 in Lagos we tend to see lots of wastages.

Just as there is huge demand for pawpaw so is there for mango but the percentage that goes to waste is scaring.

Like banana, pawpaw will continue to ripen at room temperature but with proper knowledge one can have it stored in a metal box which exteriorly has jute bag glued to it and permanently moist by water and it would preserves it freshness for up to a month.

Nice idea on how to preserve the fruit so that it does not go to waste.

I was thinking along the line of selling to food processing companies as that would be guaranteed income. But one must start with a sizeable farmland like 3 to 5 acres and also start to seek out the companies b4 the fruits ripen.

Anyone knows a pawpaw plantation in the southwest or east. I would like to visit one.

I have been reading a lot of different inspiring stories on setting up your farm. It either plantain or oil palm or cassava or cashew etc.

I would like us to discuss about the viability of carica papaya (pawpaw) on this thread.

How viable would it be if one sets up a pawpaw plantation? I know that there are lots of food processing companies springing up and it would be a component of their flavouring but I would like if we contribute on steps to take to have a profitable Pawpaw plantation in Nigeria

1 receipt
2 deed of agreement

But I was thinking I would also get the survey. The seller already has a layout but it's not yet signed from the surveyor's office.

Thanks for the observation. But one thing you missed is about the quality of the package. This is just a picture online, you have not felt the texture and feel the properties of the package. If you understand packaging material properties, it's a PP/PET65 laminated.
I understand the simplicity packaging you said, will look into that for final production.

I want a breakdown on how a man earning 80k with a wife who earns less will manage with a child plus all other expenses in the home without one aspect or other suffering.

Reality check!! Even with less than this amount one can still be happy. Talking as if even if both parties earn 300k they would be issue free.

It's not the amount of money they have but the level of contentment and sacrifice they both have

Sorry for the late reply to your post.

The only alternative to irrigation system is rain. And if you check the post I previously quoted and my post,you will see that I only criticized and gave reason to his assumption that 'plantain could be planted anytime of the year as long as water is available'. Yes, but perhaps he forgot that we have rain and dry seasons respectively.

I therefore centered my reply to his post to irrigation system because I knew that was what he meant by saying that. Like I said before,irrigation is only good and reasonable when you're trying to make sure the plant get enough water during the dry season. My point is that, it might be a grave mistake by starting planting your suckers with a mere irrigation system as suggested by some in this thread and other threads. I'm quite understand they wanted to sell their suckers, but that doesn't not mean they should be advising a Novice with very little or zero experience/knowledge to emback on that dangerous rout.

If one does not start with irrigation as a novice how then does one water the plantain in the dry season?

If you are applying herbicides when the plantain is still small or has become tall,you need an experience hand to do the job.
Its not necessary to cover the plantain but why i always say farmers/intending farmers should cover the plantain before planting is that i discovered that most farmers don't know how to spray herbicides on their plantain farm.
I don't cover my plantain when spraying is being done because my workers are trained how to spray.
You can bring your workers to my farm to get them trained.

So what herbicides should be used?

I drive a Mazda 626 saloon car 1999 model. My AC works but has the following issues:

1. It trips off after a while and does not pick up for up to 5mins and blows only hot air which makes the car uncomfortable.

2. If I stay in traffic for like 3mins, the vehicle trips off if I do not switch off the AC.

I have visited different mechanics and rewire guys and I have been given lots of suggestions.

What do I do?

A bit confused here. I thought harvesting can be done about twice a year after the first harvest. The first harvest is 8 months (with hybrid suckers) and the next if four months time from the other suckers that have grown from the main sucker.

Am I right?

Late weeding can stress your plantain and can affect yield.
Start early weeding 2 -3 weeks after planting for good yield.

If I intend to use herbicide for weeding, do I use cover - flitting method where by I use plastic to cover the plants and apply the herbicide.

The real loser here is @Russell145. He started this thread to get advice from the gurus here and he has virtually been left hanging while his thread was turned into WWE (table and ladder match).

Please assist him with advice that would help him and others.

1. Its better to process your cassava after harvesting.

2. It also good to make a new thread if your original one has been taken over.

I have seen the recent trend in the Nigerian economy in relation to the fall in the price of oil. With the way things are going in this country, there is every tedency for the Nigerian govt to shift frm oil to agriculture. Many graduates will want to becme involved in agriculture because in abt 5 to 10 yrs frm nw, agriculture will start paying like the oil industry(if nt more than). Only an unwise person( forgive me) will forsee such things and neglect it. To me, any poor man choses to be poor, except maybe circumstances. I cant say that i am frm a well to do hme, bt i intend to change dat. It is funny nowadays wen u see pple looking fr jobs wen most of their parents lands are lying in waste in the village. I would nt like fr smeone to pay my salary, instead i want to employ and pay pple via agriculture. I want to have the biggest farm in Africa. I want to export agricultural produce to other nations. Although these are big dreams, bt big dreams start small wit determination. My mum has abt 5 acres of land where she grows cassava and pineapple bt has nt been able to move frward(which i will attribute to her limitation in education). I will like to start a cassava farm. Whatever profit i make will be reinvested to expand the business. I intend going into exportation of my farm produce(thank God fr the course i am studying) in due time. The only challenge that i am having in my plan is time optimization. How am i going to balance my studies and the farm business 2geda. How am i going to start in this small way nd get to the stage of exporting nd hw to go about it and also financing. The issue of land is solved as well as the cassava stem needed for planting which my mum already has.
