aminalib:I will suggest that you look at Oracle Spatial (8i -11g) These versions of Oracle have SDO (Spatial Data Object) capability that made them ideal for GIS more than your typical Non-spatial Oracle version. Yes i agree, you may require a strong foundation in GIS to function better as a database programmer with special emphasis on GIS. If you are asking which one you should take first, then may l suggest that you start with GIS and build appreciation for geographic databases. Most GIS databases programers have very strong background in GIS, but not all GIS experts need strong background in database programming. |

We all know that Lagos is very much “unplanned” If you disagree, try looking at satellite imageries of Agege or Mushin on Google map. People build their houses in Lagos without any regard for law and order. The law require that every plot of land in Nigeria must be surveyed before building permits can be issued. The purpose of this is to ensure that space planning and building are regulated and orderly. Land Surveyors are the only professionals trained to produce accurate survey maps of properties in Nigeria. However the land surveying task is quite difficult and prone to errors. Land surveyors know that it posses a big challenge to accurately survey and represent a spherical earth on a flat surface (e.g. paper, or survey plan). Surveyors had been using the sun, the stars as a reference points to accurately survey the parts of the earth. They also apply some rigorous calculations to correct for error of misclosure during a typical traverse survey. This rigorous calculation ensures that the survey plan products are acceptable within a certain level of confidence. However, I feel this constellation of GPS control points will ensure that the task of Land surveying in Lagos is easier and more accurate as the Surveyors only need to get good professional surveying GPS receivers (not necessarily your typical eTrex or XL Garmin, etc) that will reference the new control GPS stations in real-time and automatically correct the error of misclosure anywhere within Lagos. This will ensure that when you fix the boundary of a plot of land with survey pillars in Lagos using this method, they would not fall anywhere within some 2m into another person’s land. If you are going to implement any physical development in Lagos e.g. build new bridges, new roads, new buildings, etc, you need to be sure that they are accurately mapped and they fall where they ought to fall. These new GPS stations will ensure that this happen with very little margin of error. So you stop and ask yourself why a 21st century hotel in Lagos will not want to have a web presence espeically in this era of Facebook, cloud computing, Google, yahoo, etc? Some hotels who do have their own websites, however deliberately provided very limited information about their facilities, and in some cases completely remove their hotel prices from their websites! Potential guests are expected to call the hotels first to get this information. But hey, lets face it, forcing potential guests to call the hotels first to get their prices is punishment as they are already incurring phone cost even before booking the hotel. What is ganied by witholding vital decision making information from potential guests? Some people argued that not publishing the hotel rates means the hotels do not give ammunitions to their competitors. This is unadulterated nonsense. What stops a competitor from making a probing call pretending to be a guest to get this so called ammunition? Nigerian Hotels that do not have websites or refuse to include hotel prices on their websites may be hiding more than just prices; perhaps they are hiding more serious details like hidden charges, lack of adequate security for their guests, etc. If you are therefore searching for a good hotel to stay in Lagos either for business or pleasure , be wary of hotels that do not publish their nightly rates on their websites and run away from those hotels that do not have web presence, they are still living in the era of "Bolekaja". FBS:Thanks for the thumps up. The definition of "accuracy" is very relative. MapNTL.com is not a house or adress finder but a street finder. We simply want people to be able to search for a street and see where it is situated in Lagos -this to me is a good first step. Being able to map an address down to a house in Nigeria is currently impossible to implement principally because there is an abscence of an advance adress mailing system. The abscence of functional postcodes for instance in Nigeria makes our address system very primitive and prone to error. How do you differentiate between 2 houses both carrying number 14 situated at 2 different areas of lagos but with the same street name? Actually it is outside the remit of any private company like ours to define and provides the conceptual framework for this system. This is the responsibility of the Government represented by NIPOST. Once NIPOST wakes up to this responsibility like Royal Mail is doing in the UK, then creating a location application to geocode addresses is like moi moi. |

For the veterans of Computer Village, getting around is no problem. Sometimes you marvel at the speed they dash in and out of shops, kiosks, streets and corners. Oh yes, they certainly know every nooks and crannies of the expansive market. However the market could be overwhelming and very chaotic for a first timer visitor (ask dealers who come from far away Republic of Benin or even up North just to buy products in Computer Village) What i personally found interesting is that when people hear Computer Village, the first street that comes to their mind is Otigba as if this is the only street in the Computer Village.
