IdowuAkind:Thanks Idowu. MapNTL.com can be used as an online interactive street finder to search for over 400,000 streets and some 50,000 businesses in Lagos. Map experts fan out everyday across Lagos to update MapNTL.com huge location database regularly, this perhaps explains why more and more people now visit MapNTL.com regularly as noticed by the increased traffic to the website. There is no doubt about it, MapNTL.com has effectively become Lagos's most trusted and comprehensive online interactive street finder. Consumers in Lagos especially can connect visually with the location of businesses by looking for their distinctive corporate logos on MapNTL.com (see the map below)

Jaco Maritz (a South African Journalist) recently asked Ireti Ajala a question: ', how does MapNTL.com differ from other sites such as Google Maps and Yahoo! Maps which also offer a similar service? "There are other companies who offer online mapping services but what makes MapNTL.com unique is that we know Nigeria like the back of our hands," says Ireti Ajala. "Lagos has over 400 000 streets but Yahoo and Google maps shows Lagos with only five roads. Those companies are world giants; they have millions of users in North America, Europe and possibly in other African countries like South Africa, but when it comes to Nigeria MapNTL.com is the local champion." linusing:At the moment, the only way to reference MapNTL.com from another website is via a banner exchanged link. If this does interest you, kindly send your banner to feedback{at}mapntl.com and we'll send ours. This way our respective websites can benefit from mutual traffic

Have you tried using Google map recently to search for a business in Lagos and see its location on an interactive map as its done in Europe and North America? You cannot search and get the location of Mr Biggs on Iju Rd using Google map, or try searching for your street by name on Google map. Yes, people can see their houses on Google map including all those rusty zinc roofs, but really they have to know where to look The goodnews is that MapNTL.com -Nigeria's foremost online interactive map now provides this capability. Users of MapNTL.com can search for any street by name e.g Ilupeju Bye-Pass Road, Ilupeju or the location of any business by name, e.g Intercontinental Bank, Tejuosho Street, Surulere. MapNTL.com users will find that it is very interactive and user friendly. Users can zoom in and see more details at street level and even get driving direction to any business right from any street in Lagos. MapNTL.com has even taken this further by introducing an innovative map-based advertising platform that allows companies in Lagos to advertise their brands on an interactive map. This concept called "Mapvertising" is the unique way of using geographic map as a powerful tool in localising advertising by pinpointing a business location on an interactive map using specific company logo or symbol with associated information displayed via the mouse-click function. For companies who use their corporate logos or customised pictures to mark the location of their businesses on MapNTL.com, they make it very easy for their customers to identify their locations on www.mapntl.com (see the map below. Notice how easy it is to identify the locations of Zenith Bank, FCMB, Oceanic Bank, ETB, etc) MapNTL.com registered more than 100,000 page impressions in August 2008 and processed over 69,000 map search requests. F E A T U R E S =============== 1) Search for any street in Lagos 2) Search for the nearest hotel, restaurant, bank, ATM and school to any street 3) Search for any Business by name 4) Reduce search radius to an area in Lagos 5) Get driving direction to your business from any street in Lagos 6) Email map to friends, customers, collegues 7) Everything is done online How much does it cost to show your business location on MapNTL.com? It costs NOTHING!!!, it is aboslutely FREE!!! Simply fill the online request form at http://www.mapntl.com/business/business.asp and everything is taken care of A generic symbol will be used to mark the location of your business. However should you be interested in mapvertising by using your corporate logo to mark the location of each of your locations making it easier for your customers to see where you are, this comes at a token of N4,499.99

hunter777:Well GIS is like any other IT field in UK, what u see is what you get. The only advantage in Uk is that GIS underpins a lot of decisions that several companies make. Having said that, i must quickly add that there is a good market for GIS programmers. This is becuase most companies are always looking for ways to customised some of the "off the shelve" GIS softwares. GIS technicians are the least paid guys. When i say GIS Technicans i meant people who are only used for digitizing, field data gathering, data entry experts, etc. The going rate for a GIS Technician is about 10-12 pounds an hour. The highest paid guys are the GIS programmers; some of them collect about 30-35 pounds an hour. The GIS Specialists and the GIS database adminsitrators are middle earners. They collect 20-30 pounds an hour. So i will suggest that you arm yourself with a very good knowledge of VB or Java and how it applies to the geospatial industry. There is a lot of competition from indians and people from Eastern Europe. These guys are really experienced geo-spatial specialists, most often than not, they are willing to under price themsleves just to get into the system. I hope the above is useful. |
hunter777:Hunter, MTN is the only operator that has dedicated GIS specialists. Glo does not even know what GIS is all about, thnaks to their design and build agreeement with Alcatel. Celtel on the other hand is just scratching the surface of GIS, infact i saw their national coverage sometime ago and i was almost rolling on the floor with laughter at the choice of cartographic colors used. MTN has about 2 GIS specialists, each armed with Master in GIS. You will be suprised at some of the stuff these guys are doing with MapInfo. At MTN, GIS Specialists are not the only ones using MapInfo, their RF Optimization Technical Specialists are all advanced MapInfo users. They have perfected the use of GIS for Network capacity planning, network dimensioning, forcast, Network statistics monitoring, cell down monitoring, etc. Here is a link to an article that i wrote and published in 2005 documenting just one practical application of GIS in Network Monitoring at MTN (http://www.directionsmag.com/article.php?article_id=2030) I am sure you can get most of the information you require from the Internet if you did a search on the University of Portsmouth's program on GIS. |
hunter777:Well as a GIS professional with over 9years hands-on experience, i really don't advocate for a particular mapping software. I have used Arcview for several years and when i joined MTN in 2002, i discovered that they use only MapInfo so i had to switch. As a matter of fact, I had to learn MapInfo on my own for a couple of years then i went for a couple of MapInfo trainings in UK and US. As far as am concerned, there is nothing like the best GIS software. A GIS software is a tool to accomplish a purpose. Its like asking what is the best pen, Bic or Eleganza? as long as the pen writes well, i really don't care where it comes from. I always tell people that it really does not matter what mapping application you use. There are 4 fundermental tasks that any mapping application must meet. 1) Does it take inputs and in what format? 2) Does it allow spatial analysis, e.g thematic mapping, buffer, spatial query (e.g intersect, contains, entirely within, etc), overlaying, ability to switch from one projection to the other, etc? 3) Does it align with the "Open Source" standards, i.e. can it read or be read by other industry standard formats like .SHP. TAB. GML, XMI, KML, etc? 4) Does it produce outputs and in what format? If an application meets all these criteria, all you ask yourself is how does it do them? Some take only one click to accomplish a task, others take more to accomlish the same task So my advice is that if you feel comfortable with Arcview, then go on and use it, if you prefer MapInfo thats fine. They all accomplish the same thing albeit in different ways. I have used my experience to develop MapNTL.com and www.spatialtechnologiesltd.com University of Edinbugh in Scotland is really great for MSC in GIS. I know of someone that did his MSC in GIS there and from what he told me he really enjoyed it. Hope the above is useful?

here is a map from Lagos to Obudu that i generated on MapNTL.com Stop and appreciate the cartographic rendition of the map. Actually you too can generate a route finder to anywhere in Nigeria. It is easy to use and quite customer centric

e-monkey:e-monkey, while trying to cost digital maping data, there are a number of issues that one has to consider. What exactly are you looking for? what planimetric accuracy are you interested in? what format? Most importantly, what do you wish to achieve with it? Answers to these questions will help qualify your needs and will help the provider give you the most effective cost. If you are really serious about it, send a mail to ( info at spatialtechnologiesltd.com ) and remember to put "Map of Nigeria" as the subject. A customer service consultant will contact you and give you all the information you require. |
I heard that NCC is thinking of implementing a system to trace emergency or distress calls. It is good that NCC is championing this initiative, but they should realise that using Triangulation of 3 GSM cell sites to pin-point the exact location of the distress call will not work as this technique can only provide an accuracy of not more than 5m. This is not good enough as quick response and the ability to pin-point the exact location of the call could mean the difference between life and death for the person in distress. Without accurate maps, the success of the centres to track distress calls will have a dependency on the ability of the distress caller to provide his/her exact location and lets face it, how many people are able to calmly provide that information in the face of an emergency? I live in UK and I know that most technologies deployed to track distress calls in UK run on accurate maps and the ability to interpret Zip Codes. Ambulances, fire fighters, police, paramedics, etc all depend on location based technologies for their operations. I have taken the liberty to include here a link to Ordnance Survey’s website (http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/business/sectors/emergencyservices/) to underscore the role that accurate city maps can play in achieving this. Ordnance Survey(OS) -UK National Mapping Agency has the map of every single road, house, street light poles, even zebra crossings covering the entire UK. Ordnance Survey’s mapping database contains over 450million features that are updated almost every week. OS' mapping data underpins over £100billion worth of business investments annually. Banks in UK depend heavily on it, insurance companies, retail companies like Tesco, ASDA, Sainsbury, etc all depend on it to make informed business and technical decisions. Now compare that with Federal Survey under the Federal Ministry of Works in Nigeria that is suppose to be the equivalent of Ordnance Survey. Take a walk to its office at Onikan (Lagos Island) and see if they have the most current map of even Onikan where their office is located!!! Federal survey attempted to digitize 1:50,000 maps that were produced before our independence. This project started several years ago, right now nobody knows what is happening about it!! They made so much noise about Nigeria SAT1 as the panacea of our mapping problems, yet there has not been any serious attempt to map the country at a national scale using even the 32m resolution satellite from Nigeria SAT1 -then what are we talking about?? How can these proposed emergency centers ever succeed without having accurate maps? A lot of those cities where these centers are to be sited were last mapped around 1960!!! I will rather suggest that NCC should put the frame work in place first before talking big about setting up emergency centers. Let them produce high scale maps and build a National Data Insfrascture (NDI) Spatial Technologies Ltd is like most private mapping companies is seriously investing in building mapping database, and we have MapNTL.com to show for our effort and expertise where people can generate driving routes fromn point A to point B even at street level in Lagos. The Government needs to see the strategic role that accurate map plays in national planning and provide the frame work for this. |
Wallie:Hi Wallie, nice reading from you. I left MTN around April last year, am now in UK. Have you used MapNTL.com yet? I am actually interested in knowing what you think of it. I welcome constructive comments, as a matter of fact, we offer N3,000 shopping voucher at Shoprite for positive suggestions on how to improve it. Its good to know you still have a passion for GIS. Keep it up. |
Financial institutions like MasterCard are championing the use of visual technologies like online interactive map to provide information in a refreshing and effective manner to their customers. I came across Mastercard’s ATM locator on http://www.mastercard.com/us/personal/en/cardholderservices/atmlocations/index.html and i could not help but smile at the ingenuity of using map to provide information. Rather than using the boring row and column branch or ATM locator like one finds on Zenith's websites as well as the websites of other banks, MasterCard used an online interactive map. Why? Because geography is an important decision for the customer in the choice of ATMs or banking halls. The picture below illustrates the ease of generating a driving route from Adeniyi Jones (Ikeja) to Access Bank -Simbiat Abiola Rd (Ikeja) using mapntl.com. It even provides information regarding the onsite ATM. Actually driving direction can be generated on MapNTL.com to any of the over 524 Bank branches and ATMs, 2,424 restaurants, 2,580 hotels/Motels, 2,451 schools, 2,370 open markets, 982 shopping malls/complexes, 5,764 major offices, 1,267 petrol stations, 3,358 churches, 1,837 mosques, 478 Estates all within Lagos alone. MapNTL.com was built using GIS and location based technologies by some Nigerian GIS experts who graduated from Unilag Companies like Spatial Technologies Ltd are drawing attention to how banks and other financial insititions can benefit from geographic intelligence. Geographic intelligence is the practical use of geographic information for business advantage. Whether enabling resource efficiencies, streamlining operations, facilitating joined-up working or informing strategy.

I have seen the new Lagos satellite imagery on Google Earth and i must confess it is very impressive. However i could not help but note the absence of Lagos local content in it. What i mean is that as beautiful and impressive as the satellite imageries appear, Google Earth lacks the basic search and find capability for the Nigeria market. This means that there is no Nigerian intelligence in it either implicitly or explicitly. The images are sharp but not as sharp as London’s. The resolution is fantastic at 2.5m or there about. You however cannot search for Apapa, Isolo, Ketu or AJ city. Have you tried searching for Apapa-Oworonshoki Exp Rd on it? Dont bother its not there. Most importantly you can't search for the location of any business on it, e.g can you search for Mr Biggs Fadeyi on it? So what you have on Google Earth about Lagos or indeed any other place in Nigeria is a glorified picture albeit a useful picture –at least I could make out my street because I know what to look for. The reason why you can't find any of these on it is because it does not have any intelligent vector data about Nigeria. Google has realised the lack of local content in places outside North America and Europe, perhaps this explains why they are investing on “Crowd Sourcing” in India, where individuals upload tracks from their GPS unto a secured Google server. This way, they are using the locals to map their own country. Now that Microsoft had finally bought over Multimap and Tom Tom had acquired TeleAtlast, perhaps they will start looking at the rest of the world. Multimap had showed its interest in the African market by buying over Georigin of South Africa. All these acquisitions will shift attention to providing local content for the rest of the world. In the interim, Nigerian GIS solutions and Location based providers like Spatial Technologies Ltd, MapNTL.com, etc provide local content by building huge geospatial database of Nigeria with a lot of Nigerian flavour. MapNTL.com is a web-based interactive map portal developed by Nigerians living in UK for Nigerians. It is more intelligent than Google Earth at least in its coverage of the Nigerian landscape. Oh yes it still does not have fancy satellite pictures like Google Earth, but it has the capability to search and find within Lagos any street, bank, hotel, restaurant, etc. It provides online navigational route to anywhere in Lagos and even to other parts of Nigeria. See below the map of a route generated from Mushin to Ikotun Egbe, try generating the same driving direction on Google Earth ![]()

It is nice to have the digital highway map of Nigeria. I am sure this will be of particular interest to vehicle tracking companies. However selling digital map and its software will introduce certain complexities as it will require the buyer to learn to use the software to get value on investment for the map. MapNTL.com takes a different route entirely. It offers a free interactive national highway map of Nigeria. It provides turn by turn driving driving direction to any city in Nigeria. It shows the location of cities along a route. It is georeferenced as the underlying map has a planimetric accuracy of about 1m. This is even better than the accuracy that a traditional GPS offers due to the Selective Availability (SA). MapNTL.com is easy to use and it has a lot of Nigerian flavor. See below a route generated from Lagos Airport to Obudu.
|
MapNTL.com provides free interactive map of Lagos. Just like Google Map or Yahoo map, it provides street by street driving direction to any street, any bank, any hotel, any restaurant, any market, any surburb in Lagos. However, unlike Google map or even yahoo map that contain only fancy satellite imagery of Lagos with no capability to search for a particular street name, MapNTL.com can be used to search for any Lagos street by name e.g. Model Rd, Ojuelegba or a business e.g. Oceanic Bank, Ojuelegba. It contains the location of over 25,000 businesses in Lagos alone, Yahoo map has no single Lagos street name or business location!!! So if you are looking for a free online resource to generate a driving route to any destination in Lagos, try MapNTL.com. It has a lot of Nigerian flavor with interesting local content. If you wish to give your clients driving direction to your office or shop, send them a link to MapNTL.com to generate the route. It is simple and easy to use. Interested companies who wish to show the location of their offices or businesses FREE of charge are welcome.

Do you know that restaurants are popular destinations in Lagos even more than Bank? MapNTL.com -Nigeria’s largest online interactive mapping and location-based service provider recorded an unprecedented 49,015 visitors in October and November 2007. Visitors generated over 53,067 routes from different parts of Lagos. A break down analysis of the total routes generated reveals that routes to fast-food restaurants interestingly ranked highest and Victoria Island understandably was the most popular destination for over 22,000 routes generated on MapNTL.com within this period. Isolo suprisingly was the most popular source of routes generated accounting for over 28% of all routes generated within the period. Routes to banks ranked second with Access Bank being the most popular destination for the banking segment. This analysis reveals that restaurants are popular destinations in Lagos. It therefore makes business sense for such companies who have heavy dependency on the patronage of the general public like Mr Biggs, Tastee Fried Chicken, Sweet Sensation, Chicken Licken, Tantalizers, etc, to provide location-based tools on their websites to route people to their many outlets within Lagos, this way, they will be providing the complete Customer Experience and encourage patronage
|
well my favorite website is www.mapntl.com simply because it provides driving direction to over 95% of Lagos streets and over 25,000 business locations in Lagos. I can drive to my bank's ATM to withdraw money to take my wife to dinner on our wedding anniversary without getting lost or running into LASTMA's trap of one-ways in Victoria Island. What more can i ask for? |
Have you noticed or even tried using the driving direction map on Tastee Fried Chicken's website? http://tasteefriedchicken.net/ContactUs/tabid/89/Default.aspx it is definitely impressive isn't it? I mean with all those animations! But really why would a whole TCF provide some animated driving direction to only one outlet on their website? How does one get to the other outlets? Or could it be that they are ONLY concerned about our good folks in Victoria Island getting lost, they dont really give a hoot if their customers in mainland get lost or not? Well action speaks louder than words! So what does this tell me about their website and the company itself? May be they are not really interested in providing the "Customer's Total Exprience" Well mapntl.com actually contains the location of about 7 Tastee Fried Chicken's outlets in Lagos and you can indeed get interactive and accurate online driving direction to all 7 outlets from just about any street, or area from Lagos. You can even go from one outlet to the other or from another business e.g Zenith Bank to any of the 7 outlets See the map below. Now tell me you dont like that!!! Actually, MapNTL.com contains the location of ALL Mr Biggs, Tantalizers, Sweet Sensation, Chicken Licken, TCF, etc. Infact you can get accurate driving direction from mapntl.com to over 2,400 restaurants within Lagos alone, now tell me that Google map and Yahoo map put together contain half that number of Restaurants in Lagos and i promise to buy Google's shares on New York Stock Exchange on monday, aaaahhhh!!!!

MapNTL.com is Nigeria’s largest online interactive mapping and location-based services provider. Visitors can get accurate driving turn-by-turn direction from one point or business in Lagos to the other. Mapntl.com contains street map of Lagos totaling 5,400km in length which if laid end-to-end is about five times the distance from Port Harcourt to Kano and more than two-third of earth’s equatorial radius. Visitors to the website can also get driving direction to over 25,000 business locations within Lagos alone as its database contains the location of over 524 Bank branches and ATM locations, 2,424 restaurants, 2,580 hotels/Motels, 2,451 schools, 2,370 open markets, 982 shopping malls/complexes, 5,764 major offices, 1,267 petrol stations, 3,358 churches, 1,837 mosques, 478 Estates all within Lagos alone. Businesses can be searched by using their names e.g. Mr Biggs or area e.g. Oyingbo. Lets face it, mapntl.com has more local content about Nigeria than Google map and Yahoo put together!!!

segebee:I am glad that you like what you saw on mapntl.com Our core value is to give any company that is interested the Location Advantage. Our Lagos digital map alone contains over 5,000km lenght of road. We also provide driving direction to over 25,000 business locations within Lagos alone and we keep updating our database. Oh yes we know Google Map or Yahoo have fancy satellite imagries of Lagos and indeed Nigeria, but lets face it, thats all they have about Nigeria. Try and search for Western Avenue or even Ikorodu on Google and see if you'll find it. Or better still try and search for all the locations of Zenith Bank, Mr Biggs, Total Petrol Station, Daleko Market, Mile 12 market etc on Google map or Yahoo map. On the other hand, try and search for M25 in London on Google map, you will find it!! They are telling us something, isn't it? They are telling us that they are not interested in providing local content for Nigeria. It is therefore up to us to do somthing about it. MapNTL has all these locations, we know where all the banks have their branches, where all Interswitch ATMs are in Lagos, where all the hotels and restaurants are in Lagos. It is not enough these days to do a web search for a business, it is now possible to get driving direction to that business. If you are interested in having the location of your business on mapntl.com absolutely FREE of charge, then contact me on +447891182559.

babafemo:There are a couple of Lagos street paper maps being peddled around Lagos especially in traffic, be cautioned though as most of these paper maps are not spatially accurate, and so they may not provide the spatial confidence that you require. However, Fugro Surveys has a very good spatially accurate paper map of Portharcourt produced for Shell. I will therefore suggest that you contact Fugro Surveys at Adetokunbo Ademola St in Victoria Island (the next building to Tantalizer) You might need to contact Federal Survey in Federal Min of Works for the rest of the cities. Another option is to get a reputable GIS and mapping company like Spatial Technologies Ltd that has accurate digital maps for over 70 cities across Nigera with thousands of points of interest to supply you with the digital cities you listed, that way you are saved from manually digitizing paper maps and the horror of cleaning the topology. This last option could actually be your best option in terms of procuring world class standard mapping Nigeria at 'pocket friendly" prices. See below the our high resolution satellite imagery of Lagos Island used for extracting our Lagos street map. Well the teacher does not really have to eat alone especially if the restaurant is a Brazilian restaurant like Chirakus at Lagoon Restaurant in VI where they serve that tasty beef and sea food. All junior has to do is to get a GPS receiever and enter the coordinate into it and he is guarded to the rendevouz. The era of tedious map reading using thread and stuff to measure roads or rivers has gone with the dinasaurs. Now, map reading today is a delight using computers. If Junior is an IT savvy chap, chances are there that he must have heard about www.mapquest.com, yahoo map.,Google Earth or our very Nigerian version www.ceaser-web.com where one can get driving direction from point A to anywhere. The only problem i envisage is NEPA. Does junior have electricity to power the computer before getting on the internet? But something tells me that junior is not in Nigeria because no Nigerian teacher will invite any junior student to a restuarant ![]() Tell junior that STL has the coordinate of all his favourite restaurants like Mr Biggs, Tanterlizers, Tastee, Sweet Sensation etc, in Lagos, Abuja, Porharcourt, Ibadan, Onitsha and Kano as a matter of fact, we are inluding below the map showing Mr Biggs outlet in Lagos.
