Agriculture / Re: Ebola Effect Is Threat To West Africa Food Production by irishMO123(m): 9:29am On Aug 08, 2016
Adieza:
By Alex WhitingRome —During the epidemic, many farmers were unable to grow or sell their crops because of measures to contain EbolaFarmers in West Africa still reeling from the impact of Ebola, urgently need help or they could be forced to leave their farms to seek work elsewhere, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) said on Wednesday.During the epidemic, many farmers inGuinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia wereunable to grow or sell their crops because of measures to contain the virus, including travel restrictions, border closures and quarantines, as well as fear of infection.Rice, cassava and other crops went unharvested. Food production in Sierra Leone's bread basket and epicentre of the epidemic stalled, andweekly markets ceased trading because there was nothing to sell, according to the World Bank.Although the epidemic has ended officially, experts are concerned about its long-term effects on food production and agriculture in the region."Ebola has had an enormous impact on the lives of rural people - many of whom are small-scale farmers who could not grow food or earn a living during the epidemic," IFAD president, Kanayo Nwanze, said ahead of a trip to Liberia and Sierra Leone."If we do not channel our investments to the rural areas now, these farmers may have to migrate in search of work. This could compromise the future food security of these countries," he said in a statement.IFAD is a U.N. agency which provides grants and low-interest loans to help boost agriculture in developing countries.Ebola killed more than 11,300 people and infected some 28,600 as it sweptthrough Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea from 2013 in the world's worst outbreak of the disease. The World Health Organisation declared Sierra Leone free of the deadly haemorrhagic fever on March 17, Guinea on June 1, and Liberia on June 9.Agencies including IFAD, the World Bank, the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation and several West African agencies, have been helping farmers, but more help is needed."With more than 70 percent of rural people in these countries engaged in agriculture, our first concern is to ensure they can grow food and earn incomes again so they can rebuild their communities," said Nwanze."But it is equally important to ensure that they have access to the right tools and resources to build their resilience so they are less vulnerable to future shocks."Reporting by Alex Whiting, Editing by Jo Griffin.

tommykiwi:
According to the police, Kenneth Jideo (23) and Obuneme Victor (27), who were in Bengaluru on business visa, had started drug trade since the last six months.

The Bengaluru Police arrested two Nigerian youth for allegedly selling cocaine to college students in Bengaluru last week. Cocaine worth Rs 5.5 lakh was recovered from the home of the accused in KR Puram in the city.

According to the police, Kenneth Jideo (23) and Obuneme Victor (27), who were in Bengaluru on business visa, had started drug trade since the last six months. Kenneth's visa had expired in March, 2016, and he was staying in the country illegally. The Bengaluru Police have been tracking down Africans, whose visa has expired.

The police found out about Kenneth's activities and apprehended him red-handed when he was selling cocaine to customers near Anandapura Circle in KR Puram. The police have registered a case against the duo under the Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

The duo told the police that they procured narcotics from their Nigerian friends. Police suspect the involvement of a gang from Goa in supplying cocaine to drug peddlers in Bengaluru.

According to Linus Abaa who has been following the story, the 15-year-old girl who was stripped unclad and beaten after being caught with her lover has been given scholarship to study up to university level.Below is what Linus wrote......

#justice4uzoamaka. Update:Scholarship for Uzoamaka.
Thanks outpouring of support for the cause of justice for our jewel, Uzoamaka, has made the burden a lot easier to bear. For all those also criticizing and pressurizing, am also grateful; however, o cannot do otherwise or any less than I have done: this is me.

Meanwhile, I am exhilarated to announce the award of FULL SCHOLARSHIP TO UNIVERSITY LEVEL for Uzoamaka by a Godsent PHILANTHROPIST who has chosen to remain anonymous for now.

I shall, however, continue pleading to him/her to decide and take a date and the opportunity to announce this life changing gift to the public along with so many other dreamlike attachments that come along with the offer.

Who said that adversities are not the seeds of success. Can any one still question the bold but difficult decision to publicize the ordeals of our little queen.

Prayers and collective support and public advocacy for unimpaired justice remain our debt to Uzoamaka and eternal vigilance our responsibility to society.

Northern Youth Warn Against Attacks On PMB, Threaten Showdown

Northern youth under the auspices of Northern Youth Leaders Assembly, have threatened not to tolerate any further attack on the image of President Muhammadu Buhari, who according to them has done so much to put the nation on the path to progress.

The group made this threat in a communiqué co-signed by its Chairman, Communiqué Drafting Committee, Yakubu Danlami and Secretary, Kwuanu Terrence, said it will no longer tolerate any insults to the family and members of the president cabinet threatening to mobilize “resources to take on anyone who think they can use their image as a chess pawn in the game playing out in the media”.

“We warn that the North will no longer tolerate any further attack on the image, family and character of President Muhammadu Buhari in his quest to make Nigeria a better place for all. We take particular exception to our Service Chiefs, security personnel and their families being harassed needlessly and we will not hesitate to mobilize our resources to take on anyone who think they can use their image as a chess pawn in the game playing out in the media”. They warned.

According to them political and public office holders are being demonised and criminalised on account of what they stand for, while adding that the height of this is the rebirth of separatist movements and militant groups in the south of the country to harass the Buhari Presidency.

They said, some of those behind these aberrations have openly declared that they are doing it to express their ethnic discontent acknowledging that this does not bode well for the country as the concept of a one Nigeria.

Meanwhile the youth have set up a media team responsible for countering propaganda against the north which according to them, will regularly highlights the President’s contributions to Nigeria’s democracy.

I can authoritatively say it that Fayose has not been proved wrong.

Lemme ask you yes you. Is it possible for the first lady of any country to visit another country without being received by even an ambassador? I'm here in America and there is no airport in America with that number of black people. What about her itinerary, don't we deserve the right to know? Why the clandestine movement? Was she smuggled in and out of the USA?

I just called the United States Institute of Peace in Washington DC. They have no Itinerary schedule for Aisha B. The phone number is 202-457-1700. You can also call yourself.

Where is Aisha Buhari?

Politics / Re: Only Competent Contractors Will Handle our Road Projects, Says Governor Wike by irishMO123(m): 9:58pm On Aug 06, 2016
Biafra1000:
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that he
will never play politics with the construction of roads because of
the need to develop the economies of neglected communities in
the state.
Addressing senior members of the Nigerian Guild of Editors during
a project tour on Saturday, Governor Wike said that his
administration resolved to build roads to create the right
environment for businesses flourish.
He said: “We had to connect different communities in the four
urban local government areas of Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor,
Ikwerre and Eleme Local Government Areas because we met
damage road infrastructure which hampered economic activities.
“With careful planning, we completed key roads and bridges that
lead to economic centres in the state. We are reaping the benefits
as a people. Therefore, I will never play politics with the
construction of roads because they are vital to our recovery
process.
“Only contractors with the equipment and capacity will handle
our road projects. We are constructing roads that will stand the
test of time.”
He added that because of the topography of Rivers State, the
State Government has directed contractors to use sharp sand to
compact roads instead of laterite that leads to failure of roads.
The governor explained to the editors that he is empowering
other contractors through the award of projects they have the
capacity to deliver quality jobs.
Governor Wike said he has been able to deliver on his blueprint
because his administration has dedicated 60 percent for capital
expenditure while recurrent expenditure takes 40 percent.
The Guild of Editors Tour of Projects with Governor Wike
inspected 14 ongoing projects. Some of those visited are: Law
Centre, Civic Centre, Woji-Akpajo Road, Federal High Court
Complex , Elelenwo-Akpajo and Nkpogu road.
The State Commissioner of Housing, Mr Emma Okah led another
team on the Guild of Editors Tour of Projects. Some of the
projects they visited include: Aluu-Rukpokwu road, Eagle-Island
Iloabuchi road and Ozuoba-Rumuosi road.
The President of Nigerian Guild of Editors, Funke Egbemode led the
editors on the tour of projects with the governor. She commended
him for the judicious use of resources to develop the state.
She said that the people of Rivers State are lucky to have Governor
Wike as a governor.
The tour of projects witnessed interactive session between the
governor and senior journalists at the different project sites.
