In the Land of Orixas: Reflections of a Yoruba in Brazil
Written by Niyi Afolabi Ph. D.
Sunday, 08 May 2011 02:18

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This article originally ran in the November 29, 2004 print edition of The Louisiana Weekly.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Editor’s Note: This article offers a rare glimpse at the practices of Afro-Brazilians through the eyes of a Continental African. The writing is a part of the New Orleans Public Schools Africana & Multicultural Studies Unit’s focus on the African Diaspora. The African Diaspora consists of all African peoples outside of the African Continent. This includes African-Americans, Afro-Brazilians, and others. These groups came to be as a result of one or more of the forces of migration, exploration and enslavement. In this work, Dr. Niyi Afolabi, of New Orleans’ Tulane University, gives his personal account of Yoruba cultural elements in today’s Brazil.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As much as the demands of academic life hardly allow one to do a travelogue upon returning from a research visit unless it is for the purpose of publication; the domain of the “scholarly” and “scholastic,” I appreciate this unique opportunity to reflect freely on my impressions of visiting Brazil over the course of the last two decades. As a Yoruba, the act is especially gratifying. The Yoruba number over 20 million people.

The Yoruba cover a “cultural-geographical” space that extends between Nigeria, the Republic of Benin, and Togo, and farther extends in African diaspora connections and survival in countries like Brazil, Cuba, Trinidad, Haiti and others. Religious and cultural manifestations have been some of the “sacred” media with which Africans enslaved over three centuries ago have been able to retain their spirit(uality) and language relatively “untouched,” at least from the viewpoint of the odds against them after so many years of transatlantic dislocation and dispossession. . . .
There are a few Yoruba kingdoms founded and ruled by female kings in Yoruba history. The deeper you delve into Yoruba history and religion the more you appreciate the duality and some interesting gender neutral aspects at its core.

We were probably doing female emancipation, checks and balances and equality before Oyinbos started wearing clothes  cool
You see why I get fit to be tied when I hear the supposedly educated and informed amongst us buying into the propaganda and negative stereotypes ascribed to us.  JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE SAYS SOMETHING AGAIN AND AGAIN DOESN'T MAKE IT TRUE!  CNN, MTV, US Sitcoms or Textbooks written for the American student are not proponents, or unbiased disseminators, of true knowledge about anything, least of all the African continent.  Because everyone of your friends believes a falsehood does not make it fact.  African women were doing for themselves when your vaunted and superior European women were sitting on the veranda watching the world go by.

My first experience with gender discrimination was in the USA, the land of the free home of the brave and gender/racial equality.  'Nuff said!

OAM4J:
. . .  but they remain the custodian of our history, culture and traditions and no matter what progress and development we seek, they must not come at cost of losing our history, culture and tradition. And we should not worry so much about them because they are no longer the reason we are not making progress and it doesn't cost us so much to maintain them.
You are so right!  The problem is, the detrators of the Yoruba monarchy (hereditary or otherwise) are confusing the titleholder with the throne/tradition that is ingrained in our culture and its people.  Because a teacher behaves poorly does not mean you forbid your children from getting an education.  Because you object to the person of the current Ooni or Alaafin does not mean the solution is to rebuke our culture and history.  I can't scream loud enough. lol.
They are selfish, petty and largely look after their own interests. Not that of their own people.
And of course these are traits that are unique to the African man?  When others go mano a mano, they're politically astute.  Do you want to do away with the Primary/nominating system, for example,as it exists in a state like Illinois.  I use that example seeing as the USA can do no wrong, and we'd be in paradise on earth if we just copied them from dusk till dawn.

Don't we have bigger fish to fry in Yorubaland? Wasting energy and resources on things that don't matter is annoying. World of 6+ billion people, and we are battling over Alaafin versus Ooni  undecided
You do not cede power to anyone.  You fight till you're bone-weary and then you fight some more.  Like the way Al Gore went after the results after Bush said he was President.  (I'm still on the USA example, so you should be pleased.  I'll bring in the Europeans in a minute.  grin)

Yorubaland was a pretty fvked up place at that time. All this human sacrifice, ritualism, slavery stuff. I can see why it'd be hard to consolidate rule with such harsh practices.
Dude, I can't talk to you.  That's all your culture is to you?  When you read about Yoruba history, that's what stands out? shocked shocked shocked

But yeah, if there had been some sort of enlightened Oyo Empire leadership, it'd have been best if they'd conquered all of Yorubaland. We'd be in a much stronger position today.
You're looking at it in hindsight.  It's like internalised racism, if you ask me.  The Europeans were able to "conquer" us, that means they're better than us, right?  It's a common sentiment amongst people.  You're not alone.  So, in any battle, whoever wins is the moral victor, in your eyes?  If a man with a gun defeats a man with a boxing glove, the armed man is worthy of deification?  You know, it's not as if the Europeans consolidated under one king either.  France, England, Belgium, Russia, and many more retained their monarchy as well.

I'm just against royalty, monarchy, things like that. Even a "good" king. . . how good is he really going to be, in this day and age? what is the difference between a monarch and a military dictator? Pretty much the same thing
A military dictator does not have a history connected to the land and the people.  He's simply in control due to suppression of the people.  You do know that the Yoruba kingdoms had their own way of dealing with an out-of-control king as well.  For example, a king that is adjudged to have lost the support of the people/aristocracy and has to commit suicide is often strangled by the Olori and his other wives.  Just had to put it in there - the wives had to be formidable too. lol

I believe in decentralized power, checks and balances, the ability of those governed to offer feedback on how their leaders are doing, etc.
Kilode: I've been influenced by Western civilization, yes. But not entirely. Remember, here we have the Bushes, the Clintons, the Kennedys, and most people don't have a problem with 'em and their "born to rule" mentality.
Are you as offended by that as you are by the Yoruba Obas?

The Clintons.  The most corrupt dishonest soulless couple that have ever occupied the oval office.  You do know that William Jefferson Clinton is the first sitting president to ever be disbarred from the practice of law, because he committed perjury?  When Bill was a law professor who was always losing his students papers and unable to grade them fairly, Hilary was his enabler, going around to his students and proposing a compromise of a lower grade so Bill could continue to be the bum he was.  Do you remember Whitewater?  Do you remember Hilary's pronouncements about "hard-working white people," in contrast with, I guess, the lazy shiftless Black folk who were the support of her opponent, Barack Obama?

The Kennedys are known far and wide for being a thoroughly unscrupulous breed of politicians, starting with Joe's deal with the Mob to get his son, JFK, into office, Teddy's Chappaquiddick/Kopeckne incident, William K. Smith rape trial, murder, drunkeness, and so on.

The Bushes?  You cannot be serious.

Do you see that these people are not any better than the Yoruba politicians/monarchs you are so willing to dismiss.  Will you proclaim with all your might that the aforementioned American families desist from aspiring to become a de facto monarchy, just as you scoff at your own more legitimate and culturally relevant one?

I understand your pronouncements are borne out of an unfortunate subliminal belief that White is Right, but I am convinced that this mentality of yours will evolve with time and life experiences. wink

Happy mother's day to you too cool. Another Rumi poem! I really like and understand his poetry very much despite not possessing the kind of brain that can process poetry.

Thanks for sharing.

I am the forgiving sort, so I will give you more.  Better a giver than a taker  tongue

Rumi, from Fountain of Fire

i've come again
like a new year
to crash the gate
of this old prison

i've come again
to break the teeth and claws
of this man-eating
monster we call life

i've come again
to puncture the
glory of the cosmos
who mercilessly
destroys humans

i am the falcon
hunting down the birds
of black omen
before their flights

i gave my word
at the outset to
give my life
with no qualms
i pray to the Lord
to break my back
before i break my word

how do you dare to
let someone like me
intoxicated with love
enter your house

you must know better
if i enter
i'll break all this and
destroy all that

if the sheriff arrives
i'll throw the wine
in his face
if your gatekeeper
pulls my hand
i'll break his arm

if the heavens don't go round
to my heart's desire
i'll crush its wheels and
pull out its roots

you have set up
a colorful table
calling it life and
asked me to your feast
but punish me if
i enjoy myself

what tyranny is this
RomanceRe: What Is The Big Deal In Hitting A Woman? by isalegan2: 6:53pm On May 08, 2011
pro01:
Truth is: respect is always reciprocal. I've never seen a case of wife battering that was not as a result of ceaseless verbal abuse or brazen disrespect on the part of the wife. Good, sensible women don't ever get hit by their husbands - no matter how violent the men are. I think women should work on themselves and their flippant mouths and unwifely behaviour rather than persist with the mindset that they are free to misbehave and abuse their men as they like - and that no matter what they do, they don't deserve to be hit by men. That's that.
Does this also apply in the case of a man who is known to batter or have battered all his "women" - girlfriends or wives?  Did every one of those women mouth off?  Is he just unfortunate to be a man who attracts or is attracted to only such women?

After how many incidents of wife-battering is a man considered to be a batterer, and not simply a victim of a "mouthy brazen" woman?

This world and that world are forever giving birth:
every cause is a mother; the effect born is as a child.
When the effect was born, it too became a cause,
so that it might give birth to wondrous effects.
These causes follow generation upon generation,
but it takes a very well-illumined eye
to see all the links in the chain.
