You are tolerant, accepting, and willing to give anyone a chance.
On the flip side, you're easy to read and easily influenced by others.
You have a fresh perspective on life, and you can be very creative.
Nonconformist and nontraditional, you've never met anyone who's like you.

Inventive and artistic, you like to be a trendsetter.
You have an upbeat spirit and you like almost everything.
You make friends easily and often have long standing friendships.
Impulsive and trusting, you fall in love a little too easily.
Tpia, can you take it again?  If you feel that strongly, take it again and pay attention to your choices.  It only takes 5-10mins.  Seriously.  I'd love to see if you get the same thing.

You Are a Seeker Soul
You are on a quest for knowledge and life challenges.
You love to be curious and ask a ton of questions.
Since you know so much, you make for an interesting conversationalist.
Mentally alert, you can outwit almost anyone (and have fun doing it!).

Very introspective, you can be silently critical of others.
And your quiet nature makes it difficult for people to get to know you.
You see yourself as a philosopher, and you take everything philosophically.
Your main talent is expressing and communicating ideas.

Dunno about the ideas bit, but the rest is a bit on point.
Neat!  See? There is no losing in this game.  All the results are good.  No "serial killer" soul  shocked

So this reminds me of the song, The Seeker, written and performed by Dolly Parton.  Yup, before and during the creation of the over-the-top image, she was a prolific songwriter and talented singer.

The Seeker by Dolly Parton

I am a seeker
A poor sinful creature
There is no weaker than I am
I am a seeker
You are a teacher
You are a reacher
So reach down
Wont you reach out and lead me
Guide me and keep me
In the shelter of your care each day
Cause I am a seeker
You are a keeper
You are the leader
Wont you show me the way

I am a vessel that's empty and useless
I am a bad seed that fell by the way
I am a loser that wants to be a winner
And you are my last hope
Don't turn me away

Chorus:

I am a seeker
A poor sinful creature
There is no weaker than I am
I am a seeker
You are a teacher
You are a reacher
So reach down
Wont you reach out and lead me
Guide me and keep me, lord
In the shelter of your care each day
Cause I am a seeker
You are a keeper
You are the leader
Wont you show me the way

Oh, I know you are a mountain
From which there flows a fountain
So let it's water wash my sins away
Cause I am a seeker
You are a keeper
You are the leader
Wont you show me the way
@bullying story

Isale, I'm reading that bullying story and wondering how come we don't bully foreign students in Nigeria?

I remember had a few Indians at my local Nigerian Secondary school and they were treated like kings( Indians o!) I'm sure the practice of sucking-up to foreigners( especially those with lighter skin tones) is very common in Nigeria.

So are we that nice or dangerously color-stuck?

I ask because I'm not sure we won't bully ghanaians like that, not sure

Do you think this bullying of foreign students(sometimes done by black students) in America has something to do with racism and self-hate?

The oppressed looking for someone apparently lower than herself to oppress?

I know whites do it too #justsaying
I know.  Nigerians love foreigners too much.  I remember my secondary school in Lagos as well - any student that was in any way diferent was the one everyone wanted to befriend.  Be it "half-caste" or whatever.  We just like people who are different.  Most cultures are not like that.  Americans certainly are not like that.  I believe that boy was bullied because he was a good kid who didn't dress ghetto and was obviously going somewhere in life.  I couldnt find a video of the longer interview but the older sister says she's goiing to become a doctor and the boy has big aspirations as well.

To answer your questions directly:
- Yes, we are colorstruck;
- but we wouldn't treat Ghanaians like that - not the ones on school with us anyway.  Despite all the Ghana must go drama.  That was something entirely different.  It would take another post for me to elaborate on that.
- Unfortunately there is a different culture with AAs.  They pick on their own too.  There were stories of smart kids hiding their ambition from their fellow students for fear of being considered an oreo - that is black on the outside but white on the inside.  Many notable AAs recount stories of being challenged by other kids on why they speak proper English instead of talking like the other kids in school and in the neighborhood. Now that you have a growing African population attending school with them, it's just one more layer -  one more ting to pick on.  The boy said they made fun of his mother because she is African and of the way she talks.

P.S. Oyinbos do a lot of bullying too.  Actually, that is where AAs learn it, as far as I'm concerned.

Tpia, so you want to talk about Iraq?

Here's something else we can talk about. It's this whole concept of Alpha, Beta and Omega males.  Just something interesting to ruminate over.  I remember watching a tv program where they spent an inordinate amount of time comparing and contrasting Alpha and Beta males and which ones are more successful yada yada.  After all the statistics and the expert testimony and the research, they concluded that it was really the female that did the choosing so it didnt really matter what the guys did in the end.  hahahaha.

So here's something on the whole premise of the different male types.  Personally, I find it simplistic.  If you click the link below, the discussion/commentary following the article is quite illuminating. One other thing is the percentages they cite is based on American population.  I bet the 15/70/15 breakdown would not be correct is applied to a different society.  I would imagine with Nigerians the Alpha male types would be more than 15% - that is, if I took the whole thing seriously.

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:sEuMi3oIDwEJ:www.halfsigma.com/2007/01/alpha_beta_and_.html+alpha+beta+males&cd=7&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&source=www.google.com

Alpha, beta, and omega males
The term "alpha male" comes from the observation of herd and/or pack animals, such as wolves. In the typical animal social group, one male animal is the leader, the alpha male, and he is generally the only male who gets to breed with the females in his harem.

In these types of animal societies, there's a simple alpha/beta dichotomy of males. Alphas pass on their genes to the next generation, and betas don't unless they are lucky enough to be around a female in heat when her alpha male guardian isn't around. Then he can violation her and run away. The majority of males are betas who never father any young.

The alpha/beta dichotomy doesn't work for human males. Modern society is mostly monogamous, but with a certain amount of polygamy such that there aren't enough women to go around for every man. See my post on the woman shortage for demographic evidence.

Human males are best divided into three groups: alpha, beta, and omega. The identification of alpha males in human society isn't as clear cut as it is in an animal herd where anyone with a pair of binoculars and patient observation can identify the single alpha male in the herd. There's no bright line that seperates an alpha male human from a beta, or a beta male human from an omega.

However, one can approximate that 15% of men are alpha males who have greater success with women than average beta males. Beta males comprise approximately 70% of the population, and they are the average men who find wives, get married, and start families. If their wives cheat on them while they are married, it's probably an alpha male whom they would be cheating with.

At the very bottom of the human male hierarcy are the 15% who are omega males, the ones who are unable to find a women for a healthy normal relationship because their desirability is too low given the existence of a woman shortage. It naturally follows that if there are 117 single men for every 100 single women, then the least desirable men won't be able to find any women.

The term "beta male" has more common usage than "omega male," so I see a lot of people using the term "beta male" for men who are really omega males. But that's not going to happen any longer at this blog.

Nigeria/Africa Abroad news

I saw this story on a tv show, and decided to find an article that summarizes it. It's about a good kid who is continually harassed and physically assaulted by ne'er-do-wells at his school.  I imagine this is a problem that a lot of "bookworms" and smaller kids will experience in American schools.  It is a fact that Nigerians are aspirational, and statistics support that children of Nigerians in the US are amongst the highest achievers scholastically.  I thought this story would apply, since some Nigerian parents and their children may very well be dealing with this bullying and ostracization issue.  On a personal note, I've heard stories from a few people who came to the USA and had to complete their secondary school education here, so I am thankful I didn't have to deal with that.

7th Youth Arrested in Bullying of Teenager in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA — A seventh teenager was arrested on Tuesday in a bullying incident in which a 13-year-old student was kicked and beaten before being hung by his coat from a spiked fence post, the police said.

The attack on the 13-year-old boy, whose family came to the United States to escape the war in Liberia in 2000, was recorded on video by one of the suspects.

The boy, Nadin Khoury, was left suspended from the seven-foot-high fence on Jan. 11 after being dragged, punched, kicked and placed upside down in a tree in Upper Darby, a Philadelphia suburb, said Superintendent Michael Chitwood of the Upper Darby Township Police.

The attack took place about 1 p.m. outside an apartment building about a mile from the Opportunity Center, a public school for students with behavioral problems. All seven suspects and Nadin attended the school, Superintendent Chitwood said.

Nadin was bruised but not otherwise injured in the attack.

The suspects, whose ages range from 13 to 17, face charges including kidnapping, false imprisonment, terroristic threats and conspiracy. If convicted, they face probation or time in a juvenile detention center, Superintendent Chitwood said. Two of the suspects have prior convictions for assault.

Six of the suspects were arrested at school on Monday morning and led away in handcuffs in an operation intended to demonstrate to other students that bullying can lead to criminal charges, the superintendent said.

Nadin’s mother, Rebecca Wright, said her son was picked on because her appearance and accent set her apart from other blacks. Ms. Wright, 38, who has two other children, said she had left Liberia to escape the civil war there, which had resulted in “terrible stuff” happening to her and her family.

“One of the reasons I came to the U.S. was that these horrible things wouldn’t happen to us,” she said. “When I came to the U.S., I was very happy.”

Ms. Wright said Nadin had bruises “all over him.” She said he had been bullied twice before, by the same suspects and others.

The Upper Darby School District’s superintendent, Louis F. DeVlieger, defended the Opportunity Center, saying it had a successful record in rehabilitating most students who were placed there.

“However, apparently the students taken by the police today chose to continue to make bad decisions that ultimately resulted in their arrests and removal from school,” Mr. DeVlieger said in a statement issued on Monday.

fstranger1:
Too bad, Yorubas dont play away. they have self pride and almost always marry from their own, unlike Latvians of course.
Don't mind Ftranger, Jenifa.  He probably wants you for himself.

If I had any doubts about your Ijinle Yoruba abilities, it's hereby removed.

Although I kinda suspect folks got that spelling from Nigerian pidgin English or from my Mid-west people, I've always wondered about it's popular usage on NL.
I think you're right. But, hey, kids today!  They want to come up with their own language. . . .?  :::shrug:::  smiley
jor is fancier than jo.
Hey, Tpia,
