A former Director, Civil Society of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), Hajiya Najatu Muhammed, has said the quest to declare war on Niger Republic by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) led by President Bola Tinubu is a ploy to distract Nigerians from the proceedings of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT).

Najatu, in a statement yesterday, called on Nigerians to stand united in calling the ECOWAS leaders to order by denouncing violence and addressing the devastating consequences of war on human lives and societies.

She said, “Such despicable action in the name of democracy is not only condemnable, but also unacceptable. Today in Nigeria, we have Tinubu being supported by France after the most controversial election declaration in the history of our country.

“If Nigeria is at war, Tinubu can declare a state of emergency or a martial law that will allow him to remain in power indefinitely, putting aside any tribunal or judicial process challenging his eligibility to even contest the election.

“With the backing of France and other colonial powers, he will deploy security forces to quail any form of protest to his undemocratic and unconstitutional machinations.

“Tinubu is aware that he is not eligible to contest. The Tribunal judges know this, APC as a political party also knows this. So, why is Tinubu so eager to go to war on behalf of France and with the backing of France in the name of democracy?”

But speaking during the 12th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the APC on Thursday last week in Abuja, Tinubu described the 2023 presidential election as the most credible in the history of Nigeria.

He said, “Yes, we are facing challenges in the court, but I think this is the most credible election in Nigeria. So, we must congratulate ourselves. As a democrat, those who cannot accept the results of a free and fair election do not deserve the joy of victory when it is their turn to triumph.

“Above all, those who disagree with the outcome of the elections are taking full advantage of the constitutional provisions to seek redress in court and that is one of the reasons why democracy is still the best form of government invented by man.”

The body of Catholic Bishops of the Owerri Ecclesiastical Province has called on the judiciary to rise to the occasion and rescue the nation’s “ailing” democracy.

The clerics’ call forms part of the communique issued at the end of their two-day meeting at the Umuahia Diocesan Secretariat and made available to newsmen on Wednesday.

They described the judiciary as the nation’s “hope at the moment.”

The six-point communique was jointly signed by the Archbishop of the province, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, and Bishop of Aba, Most Rev. Augustine Echema, as Chairman and Secretary, respectively.

The clergymen decried the pitfalls that allegedly characteeised the 2023 General Elections.

According to them, the results of the polls could hardly be considered as reflecting the overall will of the people.

They blamed the Independent National Electoral Commission and some political actors for the alleged irregularities in the electoral process, which “dashed the hopes of the people”.

“What our people boldly needed this year was a transparent electoral process that would march their enthusiasm for a new democratic dispensation and provide renewed hope and confidence in our political process.

“Unfortunately, this was not to be,” the bishops said.

They also expressed worry over the worsening insecurity in the country, pointing out that the situation had led to scores of deaths of innocent citizens, security personnel, traditional rulers, priests and religious, amongst others.”

Political activist, Aisha Yesufu has berated President Bola Tinubu over the methods employed in tackling the chaos in the Niger Republic.

Naija News recalls that Tinubu had sought the approval of the senate to take military actions against the embattled country.

However, the lawmakers had refused to grant the president permission and advised on more diplomatic measures.

Speaking on the situation, Yesufu condemned the president for his stringent measures.

She argued that if the Labour Party flag bearer, Peter Obi were president and replicating such measures, he would have come under heavy criticism.

She opined that Tinubu is suffering from inferiority complex, hence his need to always try and prove himself.

According to her, “Imagine for a moment it was Peter Obi in office and he made a mess of the situation in Niger. The people whose voices would have been hoarse by now are quiet and blind to the immature handling of the whole situation.
