News ToGo gathered that INEC’s lawyer identified as Owonikoko reportedly told a lie in court during the hearing of the 2023 presidential election case.

Supporters of Peter Obi have been calling him out online for making a false claim. According to them, Owonikoko told the court that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, announced that it would not transmit election results to the IREV. He referred to a news article published on The Tribune on February 23, 2023 as evidence to back his claim.

However, the supporters of the Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate dug up the paper cited. In the paper, INEC stated that raw figures would not be transmitted. Presiding Officers were told to take a picture of the result from the result sheet and transmit to the iRev.

This means that the lawyer’s claim differed from the decision of electoral umpire on the issue. Peter Obi’s supporters have been calling out the lawyer and challenging his claim on the issue. The matter of transmitting results have been in the news after INEC failed to keep to its promise.

INEC will offer clarification on this issue.

Osamor, however, insisted that while covering the beat, she was present during the said period at all press briefings and at the collation centre, particularly on the said day.

Ms Ijeoma Osamor, a broadcast journalist with DAAR Communications Plc, testified on Friday at the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC).

Osamor, who anchors the programme “Democracy Today” on Africa Independent Television (AIT) was subpoenaed as the 7th witness (PW 7) for Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).

Obi and LP are petitioners in the petition marked CA/PEPC/03/2023 challenging the election that brought President Bola Tinubu into power.

Respondents are the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Osamor, while being cross-examined by APC counsel, Abiodun Owonikoko, avowed that INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said the results of the Feb. 25 presidential election would be transmitted live.

One of the grounds raised by the petitioners in support of their prayers to invalidate the return of Bola Tinubu as President was that Yakubu reneged on his promise to upload the results sent to the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) to the INEC Results Viewing (IReV) portal in real-time.

The video evidence tendered before the PEPC by the petitioners bordered on clips showing the INEC chairman at different times assuring Nigerians of the use of technology in the presidential election.

The court again admitted in evidence another flash drive and played out of it in the open court a clip of Mahmoud delivering a speech emphasising the deployment of BVAS and IReV for the elections.

When asked by Owonikoko if she was aware that a few days before the election, Yakubu, in a press statement, said the results would no longer be uploaded in real-time, Osamor said her news organisation is focused on live coverage of events and programmes.

Owonikoko cited a publication by The Tribune on Feb. 23 that election results would no longer be transmitted in real-time, but Osamor said the publication by The Tribune could have been based on an interview granted to the reporter.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that The Tribune on Feb. 23 published a story with the headline “We Won’t Transmit Raw Figures of Election Results, INEC Chairman.”

According to The Tribune, Yakubu said that at a meeting with the leaders of the international election observers who visited him at the commission.

Osamor, however, insisted that while covering the beat, she was present during the said period at all press briefings and at the collation centre, particularly on the said day.

She said that Yakubu did not make such a statement.

Meanwhile, the five-member panel led by Justice Haruna Tsammani adjourned until Monday for the cross-examination of the witness and further hearing of the petition.

Baffa Bichi, Secretary to the State Government of Kano State, has shed light on the reasons for the demolition of a popular roundabout constructed during the former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s administration.

Information Nigeria reports that AbbaYusuf, the political son of Rabiu Kwankwaso, Ganduje’s predecessor and rival, has been demolishing structures built by the former governor since office assumption on May 29th.

While featuring on a radio programme, ‘Barka da Hantsi’ on Freedom Radio, Bichi who emphasised two concerns related to the roundabout, cited the presence of a cross sign on the roundabout as one of the contentious aspects that led to its removal.

“First of all, the roundabout was blocking the entrance to the government house gate.

“This posed a logistical challenge for the smooth flow of traffic and access to the government premises,” he explained.
“Secondly, the presence of a cross sign on the roundabout raised religious sensitivities. In a state with a population that is overwhelmingly Muslim, it was deemed inappropriate to have a cross sign prominently displayed in front of the Government House,” he continued.

The demolition of the roundabout has sparked discussions among residents, with diverse opinions on the matter.

While some individuals argue in favour of preserving the roundabout as part of the city’s heritage, others support the government’s decision to address both the practical and religious concerns raised.

The roundabout, which previously stood as a prominent landmark in the area, would be replaced by a simpler traffic intersection, according to the government.

The Nigeria Civil Society Situation room has asked the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission Mahmood Yakubu, to apologize to Nigerians for the technical hitches experienced during the 2023 General Elections.

But while there were flaws recorded not all activists believe that elections should be totally condemned.

Nigeria’s 2023 GENERAL Election is already a past event, but the issues raised about its conduct have not entirely disappeared.

The Nigeria Civil society situation room, a civil society organisation which extensively observed the conduct of the election across the country has come out with a report on the performance of the Electoral Umpire, and the entire Electoral process.

It asked the Chairman of INEC to apologise to Nigerians for the hitches that affected a full deployment of technology in the collation of results.

All the same, some activists insist that identified glitches in the conduct of the polls should not lead to a total condemnation of the credibility of the polls.

However it urges the situation room to not be too quick in writing off the whole process without taking into account the hurdles and challenges it faced during the process .

The Situation room urges the Electoral Commission to identify its area of challenges and put in place measures that will prevent a reoccurrence in future elections.

Popular TV host, Rufai Oseni has reacted to the declaration from the House of Representatives stating that the launch of the Nigerian Air is a fraud.

Naija News recalls that the House of Rep had on Tuesday stated that report of the Airline launch was untrue.

Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation, Nnolim Nnaji, declared the launch of Nigeria Air a fraud after the major stakeholders in the deal between the Federal Government and Ethiopian Airlines denied knowledge of the launch.

The Ministry of Aviation claimed Nigeria Air was only unveiled and not launched, which the committee dismissed as an attempt to divert the lawmakers’ attention.

Members of the committee were shocked when NAMA disclosed that the aircraft bearing Nigerian colours was on a chartered flight to Nigeria.

Reacting to the reports via Twitter, Oseni stated that when he initially said the Airline launch was a scam people claimed that he hated Nigeria.
