The Special Assistant on Public Communication to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Phrank Shuaibu, has warned supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Bola Tinubu, from disrupting proceedings at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja.

Atiku’s aide said in a statement that the warning had become imperative following the sponsored protest that Tinubu’s supporters staged at the European Union head office in Abuja after the release of the EU Observer Mission report which revealed how the election failed the credibility test.

The EU report had scored the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) low over the handling of the election. However, Tinubu’s surrogates, including his spokesman, Dele Alake; former activist Festus Keyamo; and Femi Fani-Kayode, who had also been implicated in the report, rejected the findings.

A group of APC supporters subsequently stormed the EU headquarters and were given full police protection to carry out the demonstration.

Reacting, however, Shaibu stated, “We seize this opportunity to send a warning to the Tinubu government and its minions against disrupting the proceedings of the election tribunal as they have shown a clear disdain for the truth by picketing the EU office.

“Recall that in 1999, when the late legendary lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, sued Tinubu for school certificate forgery, thugs were sponsored to cause protests outside the court house.

Similarly, when Tinubu was facing charges before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, thugs were similarly sponsored to protest at the trial, all in a bid to intimidate the judiciary.

“We find it curious that the same security agencies which have been issuing statements barring protests were curiously available to provide cover for sponsored pro-government protesters to picket the EU office. We sound a note of warning to the security agencies to be on the alert as the tribunal proceedings wind down. The world is watching.”

Shaibu lamented that in just 40 days of Tinubu’s administration, poverty had deepened, and inflation had skyrocketed.

He added that poverty had made innocent Nigerians susceptible to manipulation, and this was being exploited by the APC.

Shaibu stated, “Today, food has become a luxury. The purchasing power of the people has dropped no thanks to an unplanned petrol subsidy removal, which was not accompanied by any form of palliatives. With just N1,000, any riffraff on the street could be handed a t-shirt and placard to engage in protests they know nothing about.

“This is how low Nigeria has sunk low since Tinubu took over the reins of government.”

Shaibu added that Tinubu was running a government of hypocrisy by attributing the APC’s failures to select scapegoats while failing to point fingers at former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Tinubu blamed Godwin Emefiele for the country’s economic woes and ordered his detention while he continues to shower praises on the man who not only appointed Emefiele but gave him a national award. This is the height of hypocrisy,” Atiku’s aide said.

He said that rather than acknowledge that the election was flawed, Tinubu continued to grandstand, thereby infuriating Nigerians.

Atiku’s aide stated, “No one needs to be told that the 2023 presidential election was one of the worst ever conducted in Nigeria’s history. The 2007 election was similarly bad, but at least, the key recipient, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, admitted the poll was flawed and immediately kicked off electoral reforms. However, Tinubu, by rejecting the EU report, has ruled out the possibility of electoral reform.

“Tinubu is the opposite of a statesman. He claims the 2023 election is the best Nigeria has had since 1999 and continues to draw parallels between it and the epochal June 12, 1993 election by constantly mentioning the name of MKO Abiola and Hope 93.

“This is the height of deception. MKO’s victory was spick and span. MKO Abiola represented the hope of a generation while Tinubu stole the hope of a generation. Tinubu’s renewed hope is nothing but renewed hopelessness, a continuation of Buhari’s eight years of monumental failure. It is simply, as the youths say, ‘renewed shege’. We ask Nigerians to tarry a while as we wait for the judiciary to correct the evil that INEC imposed on over 200 million people.”

Jegede told him that of all the four major candidates in the presidential election (Tinubu, Atiku, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso) , Tinubu was the only one that did not win his home state, Lagos.

Raising his voice, Opeyemi said what a candidate needs to win an election is the majority of lawful votes cast across the federation or at least 25 percent of votes in 2/3 of the country.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) informed the Presidential Election Petition Court on Wednesday that it would not partake in the exercise of flogging dead horses.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the party has declined to present a defence in the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Abubakar Atiku, challenging the conduct and outcome of the February 25 presidential election.

Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi SAN, the lead counsel for APC, stated that there was nothing to defend in the separate petitions of the Labour Party and the PDP.

This newspaper learnt that the decision to abstain from opening a defence in Atiku’s petition came after extensive cross-examination of the Senate Majority Leader, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, who was the key witness for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Fagbemi questioned Senator Bamidele, who is also a legal practitioner. During the examination, the witness admitted that Tinubu’s election could not be overturned based on his forfeiture of $460,000 to the United States of America (USA) through a court order.

The witness clarified that Tinubu had never been arraigned, indicted, or convicted of any criminal charges by an American court, emphasising that civil forfeiture cannot replace a criminal trial and conviction.

Senator Bamidele stated, “As far as criminal indictment is concerned, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has a clean bill of health because he was never indicted and convicted by any American court.”

Regarding President Tinubu’s eligibility in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the witness, responding to questioning by Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, counsel to Atiku and PDP, stated that Tinubu did not need to score 25 percent of the votes cast in the FCT to be declared the winner of the election. He further emphasised that the FCT holds no special status other than being the federal capital.

When confronted with the fact that Tinubu was the first president to be declared without scoring 25 percent of the votes in the FCT and without winning his home state, the witness disregarded its significance.

Additionally, the witness clarified that the judgment of the US court on the forfeiture of $460,000 was related to civil proceedings and not criminal charges against Tinubu.

Following the conclusion of the testimony, Fagbemi announced the closure of President Tinubu’s defence, while Lateef Fagbemi announced the closure of defence on behalf of the APC.

The Court has granted a period of 10 days for the respondents to file their final written addresses, with the petitioner given 7 days to respond and 5 days to reply on points of law. Presiding Justice Haruna Tsammani stated that the parties would be notified of the date to adopt the final written addresses.

He also responded that he understood there was money laundering involved in Mr Tinubu’s matter prior to the final forfeiture.
