A few weeks ago, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella warned that the company faced “hard choices” when it came to products and solutions that weren’t taking the software giant where it wanted to go. When the company announced that it intended to sell part of its mapping service to Uber and its mobile display business to AOL, it turned out to only be the first step. Microsoft has now declared that it will take a $7.6 billion-dollar writeoff on Nokia — more than the $7.2 billion it paid for the company. It will also cut 7800 jobs as part of a restructuring plan. In a memo distributed to Microsoft employees, Nadella remarks that he is “committed to our first-party devices including phones,” but consider the wider implications of the announcement. By writing off more than the purchase price of Nokia (there’s another $750 million to $850 million restructuring fee on top of the $7.6 billion), Nadella is sending a message that conventional handset manufacturing and design isn’t something Microsoft wants to be involved in going forward. Nadella does explicitly refer to flagship devices, saying that the company tends to limit its focus to three consumer segments (value, business, and flagship phones). What’s less clear is what this will mean for existing devices or if Microsoft intends to change its manufacturing partners when it launches hardware. After buying Nokia, Microsoft was in the position of owning its own primary distribution channel — writing off the company could mean that it intends to partner up again with other companies to bring flagship devices to market. According to Nadella, search is a core feature of everything Microsoft is doing, and a technology that impacts Cortana, Office 365, Windows 10, and Azure, Microsoft’s cloud platform. It’s not clear how much farther Nadella intends to take the restructuring, or how committed he is, long-term, to other platforms like Microsoft’s Surface. Today’s announcement also puts last week’s rumor about Microsoft exploring Android-related options for the future of its mobile division in more context. Nadella has just reversed one of his predecessors more significant acquisitions in a move that will cost Microsoft over $8 billion dollars when all is said and done. The idea that he’d be willing to consider radically departing from previous stances on Windows Mobile just isn’t hard to buy — at least, not any more.

Following the incessant destruction of lives and properties by the dreaded boko haram sect, it is imperative for us to be vigilant and mindful of our surroundings. Below are ways that we can recognize suicide bombers before they perpetrate their evil acts. It is advisable to alert the appropriate law enforcement authority as fast as possible. Notifying and mobilizing people around you wouldn't be a bad idea and ultimately, you can borrow Usain Bolt spikes. 1. External Appearance a. Clothes unsuitable for place and climate b. Cloths significantly bigger than the person's body. c. Person's cloth or behavior to blend but clearly does not belong at the location. d. Obvious disguise 2. Suspicious Behaviors. a. Repeated attempts to steer clear of police and other security agents. b. Walking slowly while glancing side by side or mumbling in a suspicious manner. c. Nervous, hesitant, profusely sweating or mumbling. d. Keep one or both hands in pockets at all times. 3. Suspicious Equipment a. Suitcase, shoulder/handbag, back pack. b. Electrical wires, switches, metal or electronic apparatus protruding from back or clothing. 4. Suspicious Vehicle a. Improvised or mismatched vehicle number plates. b. Parked for a long period in a central location, loading or no park zone. c. Trunk or rear of the vehicle sags noticeably or is leaking fluid. d. Electrical wires protruding from dash board. Is there any harm to be incurred by just pulling a flash drive out? Why do we need safe removal at all? Historically, Operating Systems treat disks as objects that can be trusted not to change state suddenly. When reading or writing files, the OS expects the files to remain accessible and not suddenly disappear in mid-read or mid-write. If a file is open, a program reading the file expects to be able to return to it and continue reading. Similarly, write commands may be dispatched to a writing subroutine and forgotten by the main program. If a drive disappears between the time the subroutine is called and the data is written to disk, that data is lost forever. In ye olde days, there were formal processes to physically “mount” and “unmount” storage media, and the physical act of mounting a tape or a disk pack triggered some mechanical switch to detect the presence or absence of media. Once the mechanism was engaged, the software could start to use the media (a “soft mount.”). Some media even had mechanical interlock to prevent media from being ejected or removed until the software processes using the media released the lock. The Macintosh floppy and optical disk provide more modern examples of an interlocked physical and soft mount. One could only eject media through a software command, but that command might fail if some program was holding a file open on the medium. Enter USB connected storage. There is no mechanical interlock in a USB connection to coordinate the hard and soft mount. The user can decide to rip the disk out from under the operating system at any time, and endure all manner of programs freaking out about the sudden loss of media. “Hey! I was using that!” Symptoms could include: Lost data, corrupted filesystems, crashing programs, or hanging computers requiring a reboot. A safe removal executes the “soft unmount” needed to prevent any unexpected Bad Things that may happen if a program loses its access to media. A safe removal does a few things: It flushes all active writes to disk. It alerts all programs (that know how to be alerted) that the disk is going away, and to take appropriate action. It alerts the user when programs have failed to take action, and still are holding files open. You can remove a disk at any time, but you are at the mercy of how well programs using the disk cope with the sudden disappearance of that disk. In the modern computer, many steps have been taken to defend against the capricious and careless removal of media. For example, Windows even introduced a feature called “Optimize for Quick Removal” that makes sure data is written quickly instead of batched up and written efficiently. It is very hard to get people to change habits. If you are doing exclusively reads on a media, safe removal is probably not needed. If you are doing writes, you are probably OK to skip safe removal if you haven’t written recently and you aren’t doing something silly like indexing that disk. As a good friend of mine once said: Life is too short to safely eject the disk. However, Safe Removal does a number of important things and is, in fact, the only assuredly safe way to remove a disk. You probably don’t need it most of the time, but it is a good habit to have since data loss sucks. http://gizmodo.com/does-safely-ejecting-from-a-usb-port-actually-do-anythi-1715969743
