Politics / Re: The Return Of Fuel Subsidy By Reuben Abati by ivolt: 6:26pm On Aug 28 |
ivandragon:When it comes to money and finance, peculiarities do not matter. You either have it or you don't. Subsidy is not a problem if you can afford it, otherwise it becomes an unshakable burden especially when it has been around for decades. Subsidy was necessitated by increase in crude price in the 1970s and the commensurate oil boom Nigeria experienced. The guys in charge then, the military who are generally bad administrators suddenly found themselves swimming in money and wanting to also placate the public, the rest they say is history. We started subsidy because the government felt it could afford it then. We had no oil subsidy when we had no oil and much poorer. The truth is regardless of the country, governments who can afford general energy subsidy always do in order to be in the good book of the public. Only when the state's account is in red, such as those observed during the Greece economic crisis in 2015 does the government dare tamper with long-enjoyed public subsidies and even then there were nationwide protests and multiple government resignations. It is my belief that a country should subsidize what it can sustainably subsidize. Whether or not Nigeria can afford petrol subsidy indefinitely is another issue entirely. And Tinubu's chaotic disastrous dance around the subsidy issue without first understanding the industry leave much to be desired. |

Politics / Re: The Return Of Fuel Subsidy By Reuben Abati by ivolt: 4:17pm On Aug 28 |
ivandragon:His argument is actually sound on its own. He advocates for total removal of fuel subsidy(not arbitrary increase in price). Whenever the government(not the sellers) says the official price of an item is X Naira, then such item is being subsidised regardless of the set price. Whether or not the total subsidy removal will yield the projected investment is another case entirely. As to the sanitisation of the process, I suppose you mean actively fighting corruption? That's a pipe dream generally as we have learnt over the years. A government can posture that it is sanitizing a sector, but when you dig deeper into the figures, you will find very little improvement. The only practical way to sanitize the oil sector is to provide the right incentive and government handing off as much control as possible to profit-makers. Or we could miraculously get a benevolent dictator with the power of death and long prison terms that would not be biased on ethnic basis. How likely to find such? You may argue that many other countries oil sectors are efficiently managed by their government, but Nigeria is different as the average Nigerian think stealing from the government is a god-given right and only fools don't do it when they get an opportunity. |
Politics / Re: Federal Lawmaker, Afolabi Afuape Launches Free Medical Outreach In Constituency by ivolt: 3:45pm On Aug 28 |
ElevationD:Here is another evidence of substandard education. Easy to manipulate and too stubborn to learn. You want to stylishly rebuff your ignorance. You, like the majority definitely don't know what constituency project is all about. You think it is another "corruption" money for the senators. Funds paid to the legislator? How much and by who if I may ask? You see, whenver there is a money discussion and a party prefer to use adjectives such as huge, humongous and the rest instead of numbers and figures, it is easy to deduce they have no idea what they are talking about. Lesson 2: government don't operate like a spendthrift throwing money at everybody they like at an event. There are protocols to everything, where certain funds go and where they don't, who is in charge and what not. Do you consider yourself a reader? If you are a reader, then the country is in serious danger with your level of government operations ignorance. Reading some article from very ignorant writers is even more damaging than not reading at all. Just because someone says something on TV doesn't make it true! And talking about typical African, let us limit it to Nigeria. Among your friends and associates, do they overwhelmingly believe that constituency project is paid into the senators account or not? Now imagine going into the street to ask random people, would your ignorant points be fully supported or rejected? Now, who is the typical Nigerian? I don't think I need to explain the meaning of typical. I suppose being happily ignorant and dangerously stubborn make other Nigerians enjoy? I know some lawmakers are very dull but not to the point of criminally implicating themselves to possessing money that they never received. Perhaps, you are confusing the so-called salary with constituency projects? Or it is the wording of some senators public statements that made you think the federal government directly pay project money into the lawmakers personal bank accounts? Lesson 3: Constituency projects are part of the federal executive projects called the SIP. All the money and execution of the project is administered by the executive. The only role of the legislator is to point out the type and location of the project and also commission the project if completed. If no project is done, the money never leaves the government purse. |
Politics / Re: I Haven’t Borrowed A Dime As Governor Of Anambra State, Says Soludo by ivolt: 3:15pm On Aug 28 |
dynicks:Stop your magical thinking! No state has what it takes except oil rich states(as long as resource control is implemented). State's money don't come from thin air, they are either from allocation or tax. So, by your submission, the states should generate what they need by hiking taxes. But I wonder, who should shoulder such tax. |
Politics / Re: Federal Lawmaker, Afolabi Afuape Launches Free Medical Outreach In Constituency by ivolt: 2:30pm On Aug 28 |
ElevationD:You are irredeemable. What a waste of subsidized education. No legislator receive even 1 Kobo for constituency project. If you like post a million links, nothing can change that fact. Well, I am going to pity you and save you from further embarrassment and provide some basic education on government. Constituency projects are projects that are nominated by legislators within their constituency that the executive, that is the president and his team then act on. No Kobo is paid to any senator. Assuming you are a senator(god forbid giving your crass ignorance of basic government protocols), if you nominate that some of the communities in your constituency needs a transformer, the executive may see to it that such transformers are bought and installed as your constituency projects. But you won't receive a dime for it, the project will be executed by the appropriate federal ministry(ministry of power in this case). Even if you heard it on TV, or read it in a newspaper that senators get money for constituency projects, those deceiving you don't know better or they have something to gain from lying to you. Stop being deceived. |

advanceDNA:If money is missing in an organisation(fact), and the boss decided to ask the accountant. If the accountant denies any involvement, he is lying not gaslighting or manipulating. The accountant only cares about escaping the consequences and nothing else, so he is not gaslighting the boss. The same thing applies to armed robbers arrested during robbery operation who lie to police about their involvement, they don't care about anything but escaping consequences. So in this case, the girlfriend want to avoid the consequences of cooking in his house which the OP conveniently skipped. If he had asked whether she cleaned the house, she would have answered yes too in order to look good in his eyes if she is an habitual liar as she claimed. I know some of you guys like throwing smart sounding words around without knowing the meaning or the right context but it is cringing each time some of us read them. Gaslight is actions taken towards the specific goals of psychologically breaking down a target so they no longer trust their own judgment or sanity. By your logic, buying gift for a friend, telling a colleague you don't have money when they intend borrowing from you are evil gaslighting acts of manipulation. So next time you want to use the word, re-examine the context. |
Foreign Affairs / Re: Travis King: US Soldier Who Fled To North Korea To Plead Guilty To Desertion by ivolt: 6:26am On Aug 28 |
Zooposki:Nope. North Korea doesn't consider him an typical "American". If they did, he would be held charged with espionage, held for a very long term and maybe exchanged with other spies after many taunting shows on government media houses. From the writeup about his other behaviours, the man appears to either resent being in the army or has mental issues. Though resenting the army doesn't make sense here, since he wasn't forced to join. |

Importers prefer them because they are more affordable for most low-income buyers. If you want and can afford whole milk which this article naively suggest as superior, it is not hard to get. 1 Like 1 Share |
