Good points.
Low trust and corruption is like chicken and the egg problem. They both reinforce one another. Nigerian media lied during the first republic. There was no evidence of widespread corruption as we know it today. The closest they got to corruption is "power corruption" which is using desperate/illegal means to prosecute inter-regional competitions.
The military boys ruined everything. They were mostly misfits who could take risks.
BTW, Awolowo did not live wealthy. Back then, the only way to live wealthy is to have a highly successful business or inheritance. |

Politics › Re: Nigerian Nurses’ Job Applications Blocked In US, Canada Due To NGR Government by ivolt: 2:15am On Aug 21, 2024 |
SmartPolician: Blocking the site isn't the solution. The FG should reach a deal with healthcare professionals to pay back some fees to Nigeria for some time for getting nearly free education from public institutions.
People spend over $100k to train as nurses in America and you pay peanuts in Nigerian universities and still want to run away to practice in those countries.
Unblock the site and have those nurses pay $5k annually for 3 years for developing nursing schools, funding research, building more nursing schools in Nigeria, etc.
This isn't about emotions; this is the way it should be. You cannot keep taking from your country, not want to give back and you are still surprised why your country isn't growing. Even if the FG paid nothing tos subsidize medical education, it will still be a paltry sum compared to the $100K you mentioned above. After all, we have private schools with medical courses and we know their yearly tuition. Moreover, any such pro-training slavery deal will be trashed by the court, it only takes one nurse to challenge it. First, the FG would have to justify why an accounting, agriculture or law graduate is not blocked by the same rule and most importantly, why it did not sign a contract to that effect during student's admission. |

BigIyanga: Typical and impulsive response from BAT and his team. They’re very vital and we share strategic military and security partnerships with them. For impulsive e-warriors, Nigeria needs their airspace to fly in and out of Naija. Most countries where Nigeria airplane flies through are not part of ECOWAS. Before the founding of ECOWAS, Nigerian planes flew through those junta countries. Somalia didn't have to be in ECOWAS before Nigeria participated in its peace-keeping missions. ECOWAS is not a military organization, it is primarily an economic one. So, the only reason why anyone should lobby the military juntas is if they contribute net positively to ECOWAS purse but they don't. In short, ECOWAS is not needed in order to have a commercial or security cooperation with another country. |
Politics › Re: Nigeria Threatens To Sanction The UK by ivolt: 4:04pm On Aug 19, 2024 |
voiceofpaul: Very good but why is it hard on the side of the UK to gently accept the change instead of being reluctant as they are right now? Don't you think this is an act of economic sabotage to the Nigerian people because if Air Peace has access to the UK's airport, lots of Nigerians will abandon foreign airlines for Air Peace? Not really a sabotage, it is just business. The party that refused to do their homework in business negotiations always suffer. Airpeace have access to UK airport(Gatwick) but not the busy one(Hearthrow). Airpeace or the FG would have to negotiate with the UK transport ministry to be allowed into Hearthrow. This would likely involve additional costs to Airpeace. The issue may also be resolved diplomatically. |
Politics › Re: Nigeria Threatens To Sanction The UK by ivolt: 3:44pm On Aug 19, 2024 |
voiceofpaul: I agree with you. Those are extreme cases. That's why I said that the UK can't arm the IPOB that much that would cause a destabilization of the country. I don't think it will get to that point, but still Nigeria needs to stand up for herself! Why would BA be flying to Lagos, Port Harcourt unrestricted while Air Peace is limited to Gatwick? If the Nigerian government doesn't face it, who will? Our primary problem is the incompetent people we have in various posts. They negotiated for Nigerian Airline to land in London instead of Hearthrow specifically. While the UK negotiated to land in Lagos and Abuja. Butt we have only one location per city for our international airports while London has several(busy and non busy ones). This gave the UK the leeway to assign where ever they like to our airlines. A smarter negotiator would have signed MMA vs Hearthrow instead of Lagos vs London and this issue would not have existed in the first place. |

Politics › Re: Nigeria Threatens To Sanction The UK by ivolt: 3:27pm On Aug 19, 2024 |
voiceofpaul: UK can never arm IPOB so much extravagantly that it will threaten Nigeria’s stability. And if that happens, expect Nigeria to turn to Russia, then a new Venezuela will emerge Turn to Russia? You don't even understand your own country. If any foolish government makes that decisions, expect massive sanctions. You will start hearing about the civil war massacres and other "human rights" violations that happened decades ago. And that is when you will realize that Nigeria is not really a country. It is not that a country can't change its alliance but it must be relatively stable and have patriotic citizens. |

dejol88: Many of you simply hate anything that works in Nigeria. This is why your decisions are often driven by tribalism, lacking any objectivity. Currently, Nigeria’s finances are in poor shape, and there is evidence that the Lagos-Ibadan railway is not generating enough income to sustain itself, requiring subsidies to stay operational. What kind of government, with such low revenue, embarks on projects like this? We are already servicing huge loans, and now the government is seeking new ones to finance education and healthcare. Must Nigeria declare bankruptcy before some of you are satisfied? Even the UK canceled parts of the HS2 project due to current economic realities. Why shouldn't a poorer country like Nigeria re-prioritize its economic policies to address hunger and focus on manufacturing? Don't mind them. They think governance is about rolling out drums and commissioning projects. I blame our media for this, they have conditioned Nigerians to only expect projects even if useless and nothing else. |

Blue3k: Exactly, the policy is so incoherent. You sanction and suspend them, then attempt to stop their exit. Are they concerned others will leave? If anybody should want to leave ECOWAS, it should be Nigeria because we shoulder the largest responsibility. Imagine begging landlocked impoverish countries not to leave. I was so pissed about this news that I tried to get info from an insider. He too couldn't give a cogent reason other than strengthening "African brotherhood". ECOWAS should be operating like the EU, hard to join and relatively easy to leave if a country can pay the exit costs. ECOWAS should have been patient, those military regime will eventually crumble when their shining object effects wears off and the succeeding admins will reintegrate with ECOWAS. But they must not be readmitted for free. |

Eriokanmi: Amosun is next to the devil and if you followed my post consistently on this very wicked man, you'd concur. He won't put his hands in anything that wouldn't benefit him personally. Ogun state youths should just protest on his greedy act which led to dangote's relocation of his refinery site to lagos . That's a massive loss to the people of Ogun State. Protest will be useless since he is no longer the governor. Dangote ran from Ogun because Amosun demanded some percentage of the land to be allocated for the refinery because he knew they would appreciate later. Even with what he did, he could still contest and win a senate seat if he plays the party game right. The real issue is that characters like him are the majority leaders in most parties. They seek power just to benefit themselves and their friends at all cost. |
