*BEFORE COLLECTING YOUR NEXT SET OF BROILERS TO REAR, TAKE NOTE OF THIS 24 IMPORTANT THINGS YOU HAVE TO DO.*

1)Find out the best breed available

2)Look for hatcheries with your preferred breed of broiler chicken(follow my
recommended breeds: first and second)

3)Use only reliable vendors/agent (some swap carton and breeds)

4)Prepare your brooding house; heating devices, medications, and vaccination schedule

4)Get your disinfectant for foot dip and general sanitation

5)Block all crevices and prevent rodents, reptiles, and birds from entering

6)Heat the house to about 34.5oc before chicks’ arrival

7)Reduce supplementary heat every other day until no supplementary heat is
needed

Get a small thermometer to monitor the brooding temperature

9)Use good bedding/litter material.

10)Know your floor space requirement (1.3 to 2.4 Sq. ft. per bird)

11)Keep a daily record of your broiler feeding, growth rate, medications and
vaccines used

12)Monitor weight gain per week (weight is your selling point)

13)Check your feeding ( know when your birds are not eating well


14)Feed your broilers ad-libitum (without restrictions)

15)Monitor drinking water. Always provide cool water and prevent dehydration

16)Broiler chickens need more ventilation as they grow. They will die if denied
access.

17)Watch out for common broiler diseases like coccidiosis and CRD

18)Avoid spilling water on the litter. When you do, pack the spot and replace the
bedding.

19)Use broiler starter for the first 3-4 weeks

20)Switch to broiler finisher at week 4 or 5

21)Skip grower feed if you are raising your broilers for a maximum of 8 weeks

22)If possible, start marketing before your birds hit 4 weeks

23)Make sure your broiler chickens are free from coccidiosis before you vaccinate them

24)Always measure drugs and micro-ingredients with a digital scale.

*WHAT IS THE BEST APPROACH TO BROILER GROWTH?*

I have oftened been asked this question in different ways:
What is the best way to make my broilers very big?
What booster should I give my birds?
Please give me those birds with big legs.

There are no short cuts to success in poultry production.
No single breed of bird is an isolated determinant of good growth.
No brand of feed is a certain guarantee for excellence in broiler performance.
Additives in the form of growth booster do not produce magical results.

Newbies, small holder poultry settings, un-informed and impatient farmers do fall prey to multitude of counsellors that are themselves blind guides or swindlers who intend to fleece resources out of the coffers of unsuspecting persons.

In a bid to achieve good growth, many farmers have engaged in practices that increased the cost of their production.
Some introduce substances that have grave health implications for those that will consume the meat.

Successful broiler production is multi-factorial.

1. Housing: The type of structure built for your birds should be such as would allow for temperature regulation and promote free flow of ventilation.
Make provision for the number of birds stocked to avoid over-crowding.

2. Quality of Chicks: while I do not intend to promote a breed overtly, the quality of a chick may determine the performance of such bird.
A bird with defects on its legs, beak, and eyes will certainly under perform.
An excessively stressed chick may show retarded performance.

3. NUTRITION: For birds to meet their performance targets, nutrition play a key role.
Give birds quality feed that is balanced, and healthy.
It does not matter whether you do self milling or you patronise commercial brands, what's important is for you to serve your birds a nutrition with the right blend of nutrients.
A quality feed may need no 'additives' after it has been thoroughly formulated.
Feed ad libitum (at liberty) and give fresh potable water at all times.

4. SANITATION AND HYGIENE: Management practices that promotes cleanliness and hygiene must be encouraged.
Sanitize drinking water that is of questionable quality.
Keep litter hygiene at optimum level. It is safer to prevent diseases than to treat them.
Biosecurity measures are non negotiable for a farmer that desire remarkable results.

5. PERSONNEL: Poultry require close monitoring and supervision. Train all farm hands for effective and efficient rearing process.
Keep close tab with a Veterinarian.

Broiler production should ordinarily be an interesting process, but in many cases it is usually marred by errors, wrong practices, and presumptions that are unscientific.

16 STEPS FARMERS SHOULD TAKE IN BROODING DAY OLD CHICKS TO ENSURE THEIR BIRDS HAVE HIGH SURVIVAL RATE.

1)Upon chicks’ arrival, do the unboxing exercise as quickly as possible, count them and dip each chick’s beak into a waterer to be sure that it gets a drink.

2)While you are unboxing, check for deformed chicks and those with an unhealed navel. Treat them to prevent omphalitis.

3)Check for underweight chicks and separate them from the rest. They might end up being runts. Separating them will allow you to manage them properly, thus, giving them a better chance of survival.

4)Vaccinate them against Newcastle and Marek's diseases if they hasn’t been done at the hatchery.

5)Lunch them into their new environment and Observe the chicks closely and see how they respond to the heat.

6)The chicks’ behavior will tell you whether the brooder temperature is correct. If they huddle close to the heat source, it is too cold; if they crowd the brooder guard or crowd at angle 90 degrees of the space you put them. It is too hot! If they are evenly dispersed, you got the heating right.

7)Check the distribution of the chicks often for the first 2 weeks, and see that they have feed and water even at night. Watch the chicks every 30 minutes continuously for the first few days. If any is ill, remove such.

The first few days, chicks will pick at anything; they cannot tell a feeding area from the rest of the floor, so it is wise to have feed scattered over a large area. Put newspaper or cut cardboard boxes down on the floor and scatter feed on them to supplement the chick-sized feeders.

9)During the brooding stage, chicks will eat through the night since light is available continuously. They should never be without feed for more than 30 minutes at a time (the same is true for mature birds during daylight).

10)Spend time every day just observing the flock. As they grow, see if they are all about the same size and are putting out feathers at about the same rate.If so, the chicks probably are healthy, from good stock, and receiving a good feed. Watch for any inactive chicks. Those that standstill for more than 10 minutes are most likely sick.

11)On the third day, allow the chicks to finish the feed in the feeders. From then on, fill the feeders half full. If chicks are eating well, remove the paper or cardboard.

12)For the rest of the chickens’ lives, completely change their water every day at dawn and in the early afternoon, rinsing the waterers out as you do so. Chickens should have water available at all times.

13)On the fourth day, begin looking for signs of coccidiosis. If there is a serious outbreak, take immediate action. Be alert for coccidiosis until the flock is at least 12 weeks old. On the sixth day, be sure that there is evenly disperse grit (stone particles) in the feeders to supplement the ones in the commercial feed.

14)On the seventh day, the 1st Lasota vaccination is recommended.

15)On the twenty-first day, provide larger feeders.

16)On the eighty-fourth day, increase feed and water space. Begin a lighting
program, if appropriate.

*THIS IS THE MEDICATION SCHEDULE FOR BROILERS I FORGOT TO SHARE EARLIER*

*BROILER DAILY MEDICATION & VACCINATION SCHEDULE (INCLUDING MULTIVITAMINS,VACCINATIONS AND ORAL MEDICATION).*

DAY 1. Glucose/ Milk /Multivitamins should be given to the birds to ease them of the stress of transportation they went through when they are transported from the hatchery to the farm.

DAY 2-5 .Use Multivitamins And Antibiotics For your birds( Amoxyl col + Powervit)

DAY 6– 8 Anticoccidiosis Oral medication( EMBAZIN FORTE ) should be administered because their litter would have already start getting wet when they at day 8.

Day 9-10. Treat them against Respiratory Disease Such as CRD And Bronchitis By Giving Your Birds ( CORYL SP And Power vit)

DAY 11- First Vaccination On the 11th Should Be Gumboro Vaccine. The best time to combat viral poultry diseases is when the birds are still young when the vaccine can still gets them immuned against Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD).
NOTE- And Remember Lasota should not be administered without adding milk it makes your Vaccination more effective.

Day 12 – 13 MULTIVITAMINS Or Just Water

Day 14- First Lasota Vaccination should be given to your birds and must be done early in the morning after feeding your birds E.G- If you have 100 birds give them 100doses of Lasota vaccine and if its 1000birds give them 1000doses. And also remember don’t give your birds antibiotics 3days before you vaccinate them only administer MULTIVITAMIN days before you vaccinate them.
After your first Lasota Vaccination the next Lasota Vaccination should be given every 30days. And also the Quantity of water to be used to vaccinate your birds should be quarter(1/4) of the total water you give them in the morning. Remember to Also add milk to their Vaccination.

Day 15-18. Anticoccidiosis (Totrazuril)

DAY 19 -22. Use Multivitamins And Antibiotics. Amoxyl Col Ans Power vit.

DAY 23- 25. ANTIBIOTICS and MULTIVITAMINS - Doxygen and Powervit.

Day 26- 28. Treat Respiratory Diseases such as CRD By giving your birds
( CORYL- SP )

DAY 29 – 35. (Anticoccidiosis ( EMBAZIN FORTE OR Totrazuril).

DAY 36-48. Water

(WEEK 6).
DAY 44. ANOTHER LASOTA VACCINE MUST BE ADMINISTERED.

NEXT 3 DAYS.
(GIVE EMBAZIN FORTE OR Tatrazuril FOR 3DAYS TO TREAT COCCIDIOSIS AND CRD)

*REASONS YOU SHOULD NOT RAISE YOUR BROILERS BEYOND 7WEEKS*

It is a common practice to see farmers raise large size broilers for the market.

While some assert that they cannot consume soft meat, others have their eyes on big returns adjudging that large birds attract better bargains.

From experience garnered on the field, and in the market, it is most preferred to raise table-sized broilers that do not exceed 7weeks.

1. The market may not always offer a commensurate price for your large and tough birds. It takes a much higher cost to produce broilers that are quite big and with tough muscles.

2. Inadvertent loss of any bird at this stage implies a huge loss.

3. Most poultry farmers are fixed on administering Newcastle disease vaccines only at the brooding phase. They ignore booster doses even in the face of risk and threats.

4. Farmers who keep broilers for more than 7 to 8weeks are often faced with the temptation to compromise nutrition, thereby at the risk of health challenges and declining weight gain.

5. Heat stroke is a major challenge to big broilers.

6. Skeletal issues due to the burden of weight are usually seen.

While it is your prerogative to raise whatever size of birds you so desire, it is important to analyse your options thoroughly.

With the production of good quality chicks and high-performing nutrition, it might not be necessary to keep meat birds beyond 7weeks.

ALL BROILERS ARE NOT THE SAME OHH, ONE IS MORE SUITABLE TO SELL AT 4WEEKS, ONE IS STRONGER AGAINST COLD, ONE IS STRONGER AGAINST HEAT AND ONE GROWS TALLER THAN OTHERS.

THERE ARE REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD NOT JUST BUY ANY BROILERS BREED BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE BUYING IT. PEOPLE BUY BROILERS BASED ON DIFFERENT REASONS. SOME BUY BIRDS THAT GROWS FASTER AND SELL THEM OFF FOR 4WEEKS, SOME BUY OTHER TYPE OF BROILER BREED BECAUSE THEY GROW TALLER AND ARE EASIER TO SELL OFF. SOME BUY BROILERS BASED ON THE TYPE OF TEMPERATURE AND WEATHER CONDITIONS BECAUSE THERE ARE BROILERS THAT ARE STRONGER AGAINST COLD AND SOME ARE STRONGER AGAINST HEAT.

Am going to be talking about the 4 best types of broiler breed we have in Nigeria and the hatchery that produces them, the advantages they have over themselves and you get to know which you should go for when you are ready to start poultry farming.

The 4 best Broilers are
1)ROSS 308.
2)COBB 500.
3)ARBOR ACRE.
4)MARSHALL.

1)ROSS 308.
The Ross 308, they don't grow very tall and are always short but very fat, they can withstand cold but they hate heat.Ross 308 grows faster than other broilers breed. They have a good conversion ratio and are more suitable to be raised for 4-6weeks and then sell them off. they can weigh up to 2.5kg at 5WEEKS of age. The hatcheries that produce them include SAYED AND AGRITED HATCHERY.

2)COBB 500.
Not as fast-growing as the Ross 308, but they grow taller than Ross 308. They can’t withstand cold and often sneeze and contact chronic respiratory diseases(CRD) easily even when they are still a day old chick. They are also strongly resistant to heat more than Ross 308. And more agile and resistant to diseases.
Hatcheries that produce COBB 500 include ZARTECH, OLAM, CASCADA, AND NPG.

3)ARBOR ACRE.
They are more similar to Ross 308 and can weigh up to 2.7kg At 6 weeks of age, they have an average daily weight gain of 93 g and an average daily weight gain of 79g at 8 weeks of age under good conditions. They are also more resistant to diseases.
Hatcheries that produce ARBOR ACRE ARE AMO, CHI, AND FIDAN.

4)MARSHALL
The only disadvantage is that Marshall doesn’t grow up fast like the other breeds do but they are the broilers that grow the tallest among the broilers breed. And they are more required during the celebration period because of their physical appearance. They can stay up to 12 weeks before you can start marketing to sell them.
