Politics / DSS Bows To Court Order, Releases El-zakzaky. by JagaLove: 8:44am On Aug 06, 2019
The Department of State Services, DSS, yesterday released leader of Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife, following the order of Kaduna High Court.

The court had ruled that the cleric and his wife be allowed to travel to India for medical attention. Public Relations Officer of DSS, Dr. Peter Afunanya, confirmed the released in brief statement in Abuja, last night. El-Zakzaky and his wife who were not in court, have been in detention since 2015, following a bloody clash between members of IMN and the military that left scores of his members dead.
Protests organised by his members to pressure government to release him recently turned bloody, with scores of his members as well as senior police office and a reporter with Channels Television killed. Government obtained a court order, which designated the IMN as a terrorist organisation and banned its operations. At the resumed hearing of the bail application filed by El-Zakzaky’s counsel, Femi Falana, in Kaduna, yesterday, the presiding judge, Justice Dairus Khobo, granted the defence counsel’s request for the defendants to proceed to India to seek medical attention.

The court also ruled that El-Zakzaky and his wife be accompanied on the trip by DSS personnel and officials of the state. As with all precious arraignments, area close to where the high court is situated was cordoned off, with police personnel and those of civil defence corps taking strategic positions, while traffic was diverted on some routes. Only lawyers were allowed into the court premises.

State counsel reacts

Addressing journalists outside the court perimeter gate, the lead prosecution counsel, who is the state Director of Public Prosecution, Dari Bayero, said the judge was satisfied with the medical certificate tendered by El-Zakzaky and has granted him permission to travel to India to seek medical attention. He said: “The court granted the defendant permission to seek medical attention under the strict supervision of the prosecution (state). ‘’The judge said from the medical reports filed by Mallam (El Zakzaky), he is, indeed, in dire need of medical attention. It’s not necessarily bail but he has been granted leave to travel for medical attention. ‘’The court said when he is discharged by the hospital, he will come back and continue his trial. So, as soon as he is discharged from the hospital, he comes back to the country and continue his trial. The court heard the arguments of the counsel and has ruled. We are bound by the ruling of the court.”

Bayero added that by the ruling of the court, the defendant will go to the hospital in India where he specifically pleaded in his argument and no other country. The prosecution counsel said his team would study the judgement before taking the next decision on whether to appeal the judgement.

It wasn’t a bail—El-Zakzaky’s counsel

Also speaking with journalists, counsel to El-Zakzaky, Marshal Abubakar, said what the court did was not to grant bail to the defendant but to rule that he should proceed to India to save his life. He said: “It was not a bail application. It was an application to save the life of the applicants, El-Zakzaky and his wife. The ruling came up today (yesterday) and the judge, Justice Darius, graciously agreed with Mr Femi Falana, SAN, and the various medical reports that were attached to the applications. ‘’There were eight medical reports that clearly showed the applicants were in dire need of medical treatment abroad. The court agreed that they should be allowed immediate treatment that they sought, with supervision.”

It’s victory for truth, justice against tyranny, impunity —IMN

Meanwhile, Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, has described the ruling of the court a victory for truth and justice against tyranny and impunity. In a statement signed by the Chairman, Free El-Zakzaky Campaign Committee, Abdurrahman Yola, the group said the ruling by the court represented “victory for our dogged determination, patience, and perseverance in the face of extreme persecution.” The statement read in part: ‘’With this recent ruling by the court today (yesterday), we will finalise urgent plans to transfer them to a more appropriate foreign health facility for further expert management as we await the response of the Nigerian government. ‘’We expect them to act urgently to respect the Nigerian constitution and the ruling of this honourable court to grant the duo instant permit to travel for their treatment. “As a peaceful movement, we have kept to our clean tradition of keeping faith with due process in seeking redress through peaceful means without any resort to violence, despite deliberate and persistent provocations by the government.”

“We wish to use this opportunity to also say a big thank you to all people of conscience, particularly some very senior citizens, diplomats, human rights activists and organizations, journalists and the general public who doggedly stood by us in the campaign for justice for the victims of Zaria genocide.”

Politics / You Can’t Change Government Without Elections, Presidency Tells Sowore Group by JagaLove: 8:05pm On Aug 04, 2019
THE Presidency yesterday said that the only way to change government in a democracy was through electoral process.

This came on the heels of the African Actor Congress, AAC in the February 23 Presidential election, planned revolution spearheaded by the Presidential Candidate of the Omoyele Sowore. The Presidency in a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu said that the government will always welcome peaceful protest by the citizenry to express their grievances, but added that peaceful protest was different from incitement for revolution. It further told those behind the planned revolution to reveal their identity and not to hide under the group to be causing problems in the country. The statement read, “Following calls circulating on social and digital media, an organisation that calls itself the “Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria” plans a “revolution” march tomorrow, Monday 5th August, with the aim of bringing “regime change” in Nigeria without recourse to a nationwide vote. “The President of Nigeria and his administration respect and uphold the right of every Nigerian to peaceful protest and civil campaign– whether to raise awareness on issues, and even oppose the government. It is the inalienable right of all citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to do so. “There is, however, a difference between peaceful call to protest and incitement for a revolution.

” The organisation championing this planned action is not fronted by any serious public faces. We call on the sponsors and organisers to have the decency to come forward and make their identity known – out of respect to all Nigerians – so that Nigerians can be fully aware in whose name this “revolution” is being proposed and who the beneficiaries may be. “Less than six months ago, Nigeria held simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections. Both contests were won resoundingly by President Muhammadu Buhari and his All-Progressives Congress party. ” The campaign was observed, and results were confirmed by international election monitoring groups and observers. The result was even contested by the losing presidential candidate and his party in Court.” Continuing, the Presidency said, “The ballot box is the only constitutional means of changing government and a president in Nigeria. The days of coups and revolutions are over. ” Those making the “revolution’’ call hide behind the veil of social media modernity. But without revealing the identity of their sponsors this shadowy campaign is no better, and no more democratic, than the days of old. ” The President calls on all those who seek to use and hide behind everyday citizens to attain power through undemocratic and violent means, which has been alluded, to come out clearly and be identified. ” They should lead their march in person. Only then will they begin to have the right to call themselves leaders before the people of Nigeria.”

Politics / Anxiety As Court Rules On El-zakzaky’s Bail Monday. by JagaLove: 7:44pm On Aug 04, 2019
There is palpable anxiety as a Kaduna high court rule on a bail application by the detained leader of the banned Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Ibraheem El Zakzaky.

Already, the Kaduna State police command has announced the diversion of traffic in some areas in the state, especially roads leading to the court where the detained Islamic leader and his wife are to be arraigned. But the Kaduna State government in a statement assured citizens in the state to go about their lawful business as adequate measures have been taken to protect lives and properties. Some citizens in the state capital who spoke with Vanguard said they will stay indoors on Monday to assess the situation of things until after the court decides on the bail application. “I will not take chances. I will stay at home until the court session is over. I don’t want to experience what I experienced the last time when members of the IMN protested” Ikechukwu Simon, tire dealers on Katsina road told Vanguard. But in a statement issued in Kaduna Sunday evening, Samuel Aruwan, state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs said “appropriate security arrangements have been made to protect citizens and uphold law and order across the city. Therefore, the Kaduna State Government has assured residents that they can go about their lawful business as their freedom of movement is guaranteed. He said “citizens should ignore the scaremongering by certain interests. As they have done at previous hearings of the El-Zakzaky matter, security deployments will preserve calm in the city, secure citizens and protect their right to free movement”.
Earlier in a statement, the Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer, Yakubu Sabo assured citizens of the state that adequate security measures have been put in place to protect lives and properties. The Kaduna State Police Command wishes to notify the general public to exercise more security consciousness as they go about their lawful businesses by being extra vigilant of their environment, persons around them, and activities of suspicious persons, so as to prevent miscreants from disturbing the peace of the State. “Members of the public should note that the ban on all forms of processions/demonstrations in Kaduna State is still in force. The Police will not hesitate to deal decisively with any person or group of persons who deliberately attempt to violate the ban. “In view of the Court Trial of Malam Ibrahim El-Zakzaky on Monday 5th August 2019, the peace-loving and law-abiding people of Kaduna State are to note that adequate security has been put in place for a hitch-free court appearance. Therefore, members of the public are advised to remain calm and not to be apprehensive where they observe an unusual number of security personnel in town. “As part of the strategy put in place for a smooth process of the court trial, there will be traffic diversion in the following areas during the court session: Independence way, Bida road and All other roads leading to Ibrahim Taiwo Road Kaduna. “The Command uses this medium to call on the general public to report suspicious activities or persons around them to the nearest security agency. In this regard, Police Emergency Numbers: 07039675856 and 08075391105 can be reached in case of any distress/emergency, please” he said.

Politics / Protest Marches Are Not Treasonable Offences In Nigeria – Falana by JagaLove: 7:35pm On Aug 04, 2019
Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, says protest marches in Nigeria are not treasonable offences.

Falana made this known on Sunday according to a statement he issued. His comments follow the arrest of former Presidential Aspirant of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 general elections, Omoyele Sowore by the Department of State Service. Recall that the police had described the planned protests by Sowore and some individuals as ‘treasonable felony and acts of terrorism’, and had vowed to resist any act that can lead to a breach of law and order in the country. But reacting the human rights activist, Mr Femi Falana noted that the Nigeria Police Force has capitalized on the use of the word “revolution” to criminalise the protests.
According to Falana “No doubt, the Nigeria Police Force has capitalized on the use of the word “revolution” to criminalise the protests. If revolution has become a criminal offence in Nigeria why were the leaders of the APC not charged for claiming to have carried out Nigeria’s democratic revolution which terminated the 16-year rule of the PDP in 2015? “Why was Dr Kingsley Chiedu Moghalu, the presidential candidate of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) not threatened with treason when he asked Nigerians to rise up for revolution via the 2019 general election? “Did all Nigerian senators led by APC members not commit treason or terrorism when they spent one and a half hours on May 14, 2019 to debate Senator Chukwuka Utazi’s timely motion on “Bridging the gap between the haves and have-not to nip in the bud the seeds of a looming violent revolution?, he queried. Falana also criticised the Buhari led administration for clamping down on individuals perceived as its critics. He opined that “it is worrisome that the Buhari administration has decided to extend the ambit of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act to cover individuals and organisations that are critical of official policies or perceived marginalisation within the federation.

Sports / Van Dijk Finally Dribbled Past As Liverpool Star's Epic Record Ended. by JagaLove: 6:48pm On Aug 04, 2019
The Reds defender was bypassed by Gabriel Jesus at Wembley Stadium on Sunday having not had a player go by him at all last season
Sunday’s Community Shield saw something that did not happen in the entirety of last year’s Premier League season.

When Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus dribbled past Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk at Wembley Stadium, it was the first time the Netherlands international had been beaten on the dribble since Mikel Marino of Newcastle did so in March 2018, a run of 65 games.

The 28-year-old's run of not being beaten by opposition attackers became infamous by the end of last season, with forwards around the continent hoping they would bring an end to Van Dijk's record.

Van Dijk was in imperious form last season as the Reds finished second in the Premier League and won the Champions League, taking home the PFA Player of The Year award for his performances in 2018-19.

But the former Celtic was involved at the other end of the pitch in Sunday’s curtain-raiser for the English season.

His assist to Joel Matip led to the equalising goal for the Merseyside club, cancelling out Raheem Sterling’s early opener for the Premier League champions.

Sterling’s goal was his first against his former club in 11 opportunities since swapping Anfield for the Etihad in 2015, and was his sixth goal in his last four appearances at the home of English football for club and country.

The game was finally settled by a penalty shoot-out, with City triumphing 5-4. Georginio Wijnaldum was the only player on either side not to convert his spot-kick.

City became the first club to win back-to-back Community Shields since Arsenal did so in 2014 and 2015, while claiming their sixth victory overall.

The Citizens have not lost in their last eight trips to Wembley in all competitions, a run that has seen them lift two consecutive Carabao Cups and last season’s FA Cup, completing an unprecedented clean sweep of the major English competitions.

The last time they lost at Wembley was the FA Cup semi-final in 2017, to Arsenal.

It was also the third straight unbeaten match for City against the Reds. Last season’s Premier League title was decided in their favour by just one point, with perhaps their most crucial victory coming 2-1 over Liverpool in January.

The other game between the sides last season was a cagey 0-0 draw.

Liverpool have now ended up as the beaten side in the Community Shield on seven occasions, only Manchester United and Chelsea have been defeated in the game more times, each with nine.

Politics / Revolution Now: DSS Urges Nigerians To Disregard Threat Of Revolution. by JagaLove: 6:36pm On Aug 04, 2019
Abuja – The Department of State Services (DSS) has called on Nigerians to disregard threat of revolution by Mr Omoyele Sowore.

He also confirmed that Sowore, who was to led a group known as RevolutionNow on a protest slated for Aug. 5 was in the service’s custody.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of DSS, Mr Peter Afunanya made the call while addressing newsmen on Saturday in Abuja.

He said the arrest of Sowore was for threatening public safety, peaceful co-existence and social harmony in the country.

According to him, the service is charged with the responsibility of managing, curtailing, containing and eliminating threats against national security.

“These threats include threats of sabotage, threats of subversion, threat of terrorism and of course, ethnic agitations, separatist agitations, economic sabotage and others.

“If we are operating as a responsible security organisation and someone is calling for revolution in Nigeria, we must understand the meaning of revolution.

“Primarily, it means a revolt, it means insurrection, it means insurgency, it means forceful takeover of government and we are operating democratic system in Nigeria.

“Nigeria is not a banana republic and cannot suddenly be made one. So, the DSS will not just seat by and watch individuals or groups wanting to rise and threaten the peace and unity of the country,” he said.

He said that there was apprehension and anxiety among citizens as to what would happen next because of the threat.

“We want to use this opportunity to assure law abiding Nigerians and the world in general that come Aug. 5 Nigeria will remain peaceful and there will be no revolution.

“We want to also reiterate that the plot by some self seeking individuals and group to cause a breakdown of law and order, cause disaffection, disrupt social and economic services will not be tolerated,” he said.

Afunanya said government had been elected democratically, adding that there would not be any forceful takeover by any individual or group.

The PRO said the DSS would work with other stakeholders to ensure that peace was maintained in the country.

He said that the service would do all it could within the law to discharge its responsibility to ensure peace and unity in Nigeria at all times. (NAN)

Celebrities / Why People Hate Me – Davido by JagaLove: 10:04am On Aug 01, 2019
When Davido released his latest song, ‘Blow my mind’, featuring American pop star, Chris Brown a few days ago, controversial Nollywood actor, Uche Maduagwu advised him not to believe that he is better than Wizkid because in his opinion, if not for his father’s wealth, he wouldn’t have gone this far in the Nigerian music industry. Davido However, reacting to Maduagwu’s opinion, the ‘Dami Duro’ crooner explained why people hate him and why they equally refuse to support him since he debuted on the Nigerian music scene. “I’ve been in this industry for seven -years and nobody is supporting me, it’s just hate; from morning till night it’s just hate because my father has money. Is it my fault that my father is a rich man? I work hard, I deliver hits and I take care of my people. So if you have a problem with me, suck my private part. We rise by lifting others”, he said. Responding to Davido’s outburst , Maduagwu stated that it is laughable for the singer to assume that people hate him because his father is wealthy. “Nobody hates you because of your father’s wealth, Nigerians just love Wizkid’s songs more than yours. Don’t get it twisted, you are not the only child of a billionaire father in this industry, so, it’s laughable for you to assume people hate you because of your fathers money, Nigerians are not enemies of progress, maybe, if you start being humble and stop behaving like this, the Nigerian music industry is your birthright. Maybe, Nigerians, including your colleague, will start showing you much love to cover for the deficit in your music compared to that of #Wizkid who got featured on Beyoncé’s ‘Lion King’ album. Have you asked Nigerians why they crowned Wizkid the king of Nigerian and African music instead of you”, he said.

Politics / I Will Contest For President In 2027 – Dino Melaye by JagaLove: 9:54am On Aug 01, 2019
Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West) on Wednesday stormed the state capital in pursuant with his aspiration to govern the state. The senator first met with party exco at the party secretariat in Lokoja, and also went to the NUJ press centre where he presented his missions and visions for the state.Melaye said his desires to govern the state is not only to rescue the state from the incumbent but to build a ‘New Kogi’ ruled by Ideas. Melaye also said he has his eyes set on the presidency in 2027, stressing that the governorship struggle was just a stepping stone to his presidential ambition. He said, “Kogi State is not witnessing democracy, what we are witnessing is a government of the greedy, by the greedy and for the greedy; best put as ‘greedocracy’. “But when I come on board as governor, I shall build a new Kogi State where ideals will revolutionise the state. My administration will banish hunger from the state. Kogi has no business to be poor. I shall look into agriculture and technology to turn around the economic fortune of the state.” Melaye averred that amongst the aspirants in PDP, he remained the best and most experienced to rescue the state from the present occupant. “I have no father, uncle, In-law or godfathers to pilot my ambition, but I have the requisite requirements to face the APC candidate in the election “I’m also not in the race to bamboozle you, I’m in the race to take the state to the promised land. In four year, we shall make the state the economic envy of other states. “I fear nobody, I only respect human beings. I have been arrested for 18 times within the last three year and I have 12 cases in court, but I’m still standing, I have what it takes to face and rescue the state from Yahaya Bello.” Melaye, however, tasked the NUJ to organised a guber debate amongst the aspirants across party level to give the state a chance to pick their candidate, saying the guber race is too important to leave in the hands of political class alone.

Politics / We Are Not Responsible For Police Commissioners Death - IMN by JagaLove: 11:31am On Jul 23, 2019
Ben Agande, Kaduna The Islamic Movement in Nigeria has absolved itself of the murder of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations in the FCT, DCP Usman Musa, saying that he may have been a victim of “friendly fire”. Security personnel evacuate a victim of the violent protest by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (a.k.a Shiites) in Abuja on Monday (22/7/19). The Shiites are demanding the release of their leader, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, who has been in detention for alleged murder since Dec. 2015. DCP Umar, a Channels TV reporter and several other members of the IMN died during a protest by the IMN on Monday that turned violent. In an exclusive interview with Vanguard, the spokesman of the IMN, Ibrahim Musa reiterated that members of the movement do not carry weapons so they could not have been responsible for the senior policeman’s death. According to him, several members of the movement died during the protest as a result of the violence unleashed on them by security agents. He said “a quick analysis of images and video clips showed that the Free Zakzaky procession was peacefully progressing prior to the brutal crackdown. It also clearly showed that the protesters weren’t bearing arms and traffic was moving smoothly without hindrance. Also read: How six Shiites were killed in Abuja clashes over imprisoned leader “The images also showed the police, armed to the teeth, intent on stopping the movement of the protesters. Few other policemen and plain cloth security agents were seen piling used tyres for use to set bonfires. By the time the police struck, about a dozen members of the Islamic Movement had been killed. The police were seen picking the corpses to an undisclosed location, perhaps for mass burial “Also shot were a journalist with the Channels TV and their colleague, an Deputy Commissioner of Police, whom photographs showed was struck from the back of his head with the bullet exit in front, an indication that he was a victim of “friendly fire.” “As if to hide this fact, the late policeman was hurriedly buried without any form of postmortem examination, which would have revealed the source of the bullet,” he said.
