Lagos - Nigeria is expected to be declared Ebola-free today, just three months after fears that the virus could spread like wildfire through Africa's most populous nation.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is preparing to announce that Nigeria has not had a confirmed case of Ebola for 42 days - or two incubation periods of 21 days - just as it did for Senegal on Friday.

The founder and Chief Executive Officer of the popular social networking website, Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have donated N4bn to fight the Ebola Virus Disease.

Making the announcement on his Facebook page, Zuckerberg said they wanted to stop the epidemic before it got out of control to become a bigger, and more expensive, global issue to fight, like the HIV.
He said, “Priscilla and I are donating $25m to the Centres for Disease Control Foundation to help fight Ebola. The epidemic is at a critical turning point. It has infected 8,400 people so far, but it is spreading very quickly and projections suggest it could infect one million people or more over the next several months if not addressed.

Fresh indications have emerged that the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) may field the Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, as its candidate for the 2015 governorship election in Rivers State.

This goes contrary to earlier assumption that the party would not risk featuring yet another Ikwerre man in the state for Governorship. The incumbent Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who would complete his second term by next year, comes from the same Local Government.

Following discussions and body language of the party leadership during the reconciliation meeting of the party held last week at the Legacy House, Maitama, Abuja, it was clear that the party would favour the minister.
A credible source at the meeting said that the choice of Wike at the national might not go down well with some chieftains of the party, including people like former Governor Peter Odili, among others.

“Odili did not say anything at the meeting. He was not looking happy when it looked as if the leadership of the party was bent on giving Wike his way to get the ticket of the party for next year’s election.

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya said Friday night that 27 hostages, among whom are 10 Chinese workers, wife of Cameroon's Vice-Prime Minister, Amadou Ali and 16 others held by suspected Boko Haram insurgents had been released after more than 2 months in captivity.

This announcement by the president runs contrary to an earlier report same Friday by News Agency of Nigeria in which the Cameroon communication minister, Issa Bakary, completely denied knowledge of possibility of release.
