A Nigerian military helicopter crashed and exploded next to a college dormitory in the northeastern part of the country, the zone where troops are fighting an Islamic insurgency, the military and witnesses said Friday. All three crew members died, the military said.

Four days ago, the military reported a helicopter safely crash-landed minutes after take-off from Yola International Airport in Adamawa state.

Two months after the collapse of the guest house belonging to the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) in Ikotun, a Lagos suburb, resulting in the death of about 118 persons, the Lagos State Government on Wednesday approved the repatriation of the bodies of 54 South Africans who died in the incident.
Besides, the state government disclosed that 16 more bodies identified to be nationals of Nigeria, Togo and Benin had also gone through DNA tests, putting the number of victims certified for collection at 70.

A resident, Jamilu Inuwa, said saw the chopper go down.

“The helicopter crashed in Damare,” he said. “I don’t know if it is a military plane or not.” he said.A Yola-based journalist however told PREMIUM TIMES he had it on good authority that the helicopter was on surveillance mission and was carrying arms and ammunition.
