Sorry about your son. Try using a saline spray and nasal pump to decongest his nostrils. Then do a steam bath using vicks vapour(or any menthol like robb). Ensure you keep him propped up and do feed him regularly.

Baby's First Foods - 7 Foods You Should Introduce

Has your baby crossed the six months milestone? Are you keen to introduce first solid foods for baby? If you are curious and clueless reading this post may be a good idea.

Starting your baby on a solid diet can be messy, fun, playful and even scary. But fret not! Feeding first foods for baby is not as difficult as it sounds. You just need to keep a track of their growth and development. Here are some simple tips & suggestions on how to introduce first baby foods.

When Can You Introduce Solids In Your Baby’s Diet?

Here some signs to watch out for before weaning your baby.

Your baby has lost his extrusion reflex.
Your baby can sit up without support. Your baby needs to maintain a steady and upright position to take his first foods.

Most of the babies are ready to take their first solid when they have doubled their weight. It usually happens around the 5th month. So check your baby’s weight.
See if your baby is eyeing your meals and reaching out to try new foods.
Babies also show signs of hunger after turning six months old. Your baby may clamor for more when the milk bottle is empty or may want you to nurse him more often.

Top Seven Best First Baby Foods:

1. Cereals:
Doctors strongly recommend iron-fortified cereals as one of the first foods for babies. It boosts his iron intake and regulates the baby’s bowel movement. Mix cereal with a few teaspoons of breast milk, water or formula before offering it to your baby.

2. Fruits:
In addition to cereals, you can give your baby pureed or mashed fruits. Most of the babies love fruit. Wash the fruits well before peeling and make sure they are fully ripe. Some of the best options include pears, prunes, avocado, peach and banana.

Cut the banana into slices and mash it with a fork. Unsweetened applesauce and apple puree are also perfect baby foods. Surprisingly, babies love the tangy taste of fruits. Try serving pureed cherries or plums to your babies. You don’t need to cook avocado for your baby. Scoop out the avocado flesh and mash it with a fork before serving. Offering various seasonal fruits to your baby will tantalize his tiny taste buds in a healthy way.

3. Vegetables:
Veggies also make a good baby food option. Wash, peel and cook the veggies until tender. Do not give canned vegetables to your baby as they contain added salt. Instead, you can give your baby mashed potatoes, boiled or baked and pureed sweet potatoes. Alternatively, you can serve him a puree of baby carrots, peas, squash and green beans.

4. Juice:
You can give small amounts of unsweetened juice diluted with boiled water with meals. Remember to serve the juice in a feeding cup, not a bottle.

5. Meat:
Stewed and pureed poultry is an ideal baby food. Most of the babies love to eat chicken. You can also add fish to his diet but carefully remove the bones while serving it to your little one.

6. Whole Grains:
Whole grains like millet and quinoa will expose your baby’s palate to a whole new world of food textures. The variety of textures of different grains will help your baby learn to use his mouth and tongue. Cook millet or quinoa in vegetable broth and serve with pureed butternut squash.

7. Readymade Baby Food:
You can also serve ready-made baby foods to your baby. But before proceeding, you need to keep these things in mind:

Check the manufacturing and expiry date and seal on each package.
Watch out for additive, artificial flavoring and food coloring.
Do not buy a baby food pack that is leaking or open.
Buy the baby foods from a renowned and well-stocked shop.
What Should You Do If Your Baby Rejects The First Food?
There is a high possibility that your baby will refuse the first food offered to him. Don’t worry. Try again after some time. You may also have to wait for a few days until your baby has forgotten the experience. Do not think that your baby hates the food. It is just that he is unfamiliar with it. If your baby refuses to open up for the next bite or turns away his face or starts playing with his food, then probably he is full.

Tips To Prevent Choking:
It is crucial to take all the precautions to prevent choking. Here are a few handy tips you can follow:

Make your baby sits upright in a high chair while feeding.
Never offer foods that are potential choking hazards like hot dogs, whole grapes, and popcorn.
How Much Food Is Enough?
Many mothers worry that they may be serving either too much solid food or too little. But it is not as complicated as it seems.

In the beginning, give just one serving of solid food a day or every alternate day if your baby is reluctant. Your baby may take just one or two spoonful. Don’t worry, he will work his way up soon. Increase the amount and the frequency of feeding gradually. By around 8 or 9 months, your baby will be eating three solid meals a day.

Points To Remember:
Your baby’s first food should be a single ingredient food.
Do not add salt or sugar to baby first foods.
Do not offer solids to your baby if he is sick, tired or cranky.
Offer a new food in the morning or early in the day after to watch out for allergic reactions.
Wait for at least nine months before offering highly allergenic foods like eggs, shellfish and peanuts.
Do not give honey to your baby as it can cause a potentially dangerous disease called infant botulism.
Refrain from giving your baby cow’s milk before his first birthday as it can irritate your baby’s tiny tummy.
If the food is hot, cool it and test the temperature on your wrist before giving it to your baby.
Each time you introduce a new food to your baby, wait for four days to see if it causes any reaction.
When your baby’s tiny teeth appear, you can help develop his chewing skills, by offering him foods with more texture.
Most importantly, you have to be patient with your tot. Remember that it may take him a little time to get accustomed to new foods, so don’t get frustrated. Be kind and gentle while dealing with your infant. Also, consult a pediatrician before introducing your baby to any new food

The Smart Path to Starting Solid Foods

Four signs your baby may be ready for solids—plus, nine ways to start smart.

For the first six months, your baby’s nutritional needs are fulfilled through breast milk or formula alone. But after that, liquids may no longer provide adequate nutrition. That’s when it’s time to start introducing solids.

This transition is momentous, and it’s important to get your baby going on solids at the right time and in the right manner. If you’re strategic in your method, you can even begin to lay the groundwork for healthful eating habits that will last a lifetime.

Keep in mind that there’s no need to rush: Approaching solids in a measured way allows your baby—and his developing system—time to adapt. At about 6 months old, or when your baby shows signs of readiness, you can gradually work in complementary foods while continuing to breast- or bottle-feed.

LOOK FOR SIGNS OF READINESS.

Between 4 and 6 months, most babies show increased interest in the food that others are eating—they might, for instance, try to reach for it or put it in their mouths. Other developmental signs include being able to sit upright (with support), having good head and neck control, and opening the mouth and leaning forward when food is offered.

START SMALL, VERY SMALL.

Give your child a tester of solid food from a spoon or your finger at the end of a milk feeding to familiarize him with the new taste.

TAKE IT ONE AT A TIME.

To begin, give your baby just one, single-ingredient solid food. For example, offer oatmeal by itself before you have him try oatmeal mixed with applesauce.

WAIT A FEW DAYS BETWEEN NEW FOODS.

That way you can make sure there are no reactions (allergic or otherwise) to the food, such as diarrhea, rash, vomiting, coughing, or facial swelling.

DON’T WORRY TOO MUCH ABOUT THE ORDER OF FIRST FOODS.

Cereal is a good starter, because you can mix it with the already-familiar flavors of breast milk or formula; plus, it’s a good source of iron. Doctors used to advise against introducing highly allergenic foods—such as peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, and fish—until after the first birthday. But there’s no evidence that early introduction of such foods raises the risk of an allergy. The current recommendation is to offer these foods along with others after 6 months, unless a parent or sibling has an allergic condition or a history of eczema, allergy, or asthma.

INTRODUCE NEW TEXTURES AND CONSISTENCIES GRADUALLY.

First foods should be strained or pureed, so they’re easy to swallow. Cereal, often the first solid food offered, should be mixed with breast milk or formula to a very thin consistency. Never add cereal to a bottle, as it could cause your baby to choke and interfere with him learning proper feeding skills. Once he is able to eat thin purees well, try a thicker puree. After your baby is older than 6 months or is used to strained foods, he’s ready for mashed foods. Hold off on ground or finely chopped foods until around 8 months, when he’ll be up for finger foods, too.

GO ADDITIVE-FREE.

First foods don’t need any sugar or salt added to them. Your baby will thrill to the basic taste of the natural flavors.

KEEP UP THE CEREAL.

By 4 to 6 months, babies begin to require more iron. A serving of iron-fortified formula or, at 6 months, cereal made with breast milk should suffice. Once your baby is eating solids, add a serving of vitamin C (such as fruit) with cereal to increase iron absorption.

OPT FOR NUTRITIONAL POWERHOUSES.

Once your baby has transitioned well to solids, try fresh, whole foods that pack a lot of nutrients per calorie and have undergone little or no processing (other than pureeing or mashing by you). Top picks include avocado, eggs, lentils, beans, yogurt, tofu, and hummus. Fruits and vegetables without skins and seeds should be included at every meal.

GO SLOW ON JUICE.

Juice isn’t needed before your baby is 6 months old. Even then, a baby or toddler should be given no more than 4 to 6 ounces a day, served in a cup, not a bottle. Make sure the juice is pasteurized and 100 percent juice (not a fruit drink, which can be primarily sugar and water).

BABY FEEDING TIMELINE

Tiny newborns have different nutritional needs than older infants. And growing toddlers have different requirements, too. Read on for helpful feeding guidelines from the first day through the first few years.

Newborn Feeding

Baby nutrition should come from breast milk and/or formula only.
Feed on demand, according to your baby's hunger cues; the amounts shown are a guide.
Don't try to force your baby to finish a bottle when he is full.
Newborn Feeding: Birth - 3 Months
Breast Milk
Every 2-3 hours (8-12 feedings per day), on demand.
Formula
Every 3-4 hours (6-8 feedings per day), on demand, about 2-3 ounces per feeding.
Grains
None
Fruit and Vegetables
None
Dairy, Meat and Poultry
None
Infant Feeding

At 4-6 months, once your baby can sit with support, hold her head upright, and show interest in food, introduce semi-solid foods.
Feed one new food every 3-5 days, and watch for signs of allergy, like rash, diarrhea or vomiting.
Do not introduce fruit juices during the first 6 months. Then, limit fruit juice to 4-6 fl oz of 100% juice per day.
Avoid adding sugar or salt to foods.
At about 8 months, begin feeding your baby finger foods that she can pick up and feed herself. Plan for a mess and be patient.
Never give infants raisins, nuts, popcorn or small, hard pieces of food, as these can be choking hazards. And remember, do not give honey to a baby under one year.
Continue feeding your baby breast milk or formula. These intakes will decrease some as your baby consumes more solid foods.
Infant Feeding: 4-6 Months
Breast Milk
On demand about 6-8 feedings per day.
Formula
4-5 feedings per day, 5-7 fl oz per feeding.
Grains
Start baby on iron-fortified rice or barley cereal mixed with breast milk or formula.
Fruit and Vegetables
Introduce a single pureed fruit or vegetable and feed it for 3-5 days before starting another.
Dairy, Meat and Poultry
Pureed meats.

Infant Feeding: 6-9 Months
Breast Milk
On demand about 4-6 feedings per day.
Formula
4-5 feedings per day, 6-8 fl oz per feeding (up to a maximum of about 32 fl oz a day).
Grains
Start finger foods that have more texture, like oat ceareal o's or toast fingers.
Fruit and Vegetables
Pureed or mashed fruits and vegetables.
Dairy, Meat and Poultry
Yogurt, pureed or finely ground meats and chicken.
Toddler Feeding

After the first year, you'll probably notice a decline in your toddler's appetite. Don't worry, her growth rate is slowing and she doesn't require as much food.
Toddlers may need repeated exposures to new foods before accepting them. If he refuses a food, don't give up or show disappointment; just offer it again another day.
Toddlers need about 1,000 calories a day. Since they eat toddler-sized portions, offer 3 meals and 3 snacks daily.
Give your toddler water for thirst. Avoid giving too much fruit juice—it's loaded with sugar. Serve less than 4-6 ounces of juice a day.
Feed a variety of food from the 4 basic food groups below:
Toddler Feeding: 9-12 Months
Breast Milk
On demand about 4 or more feedings per day.
Formula
4 feedings per day, 6-8 fl oz per feeding (about 24-32 fl oz a day).
Grains
Fortified cereal grains (3 Tbsp portions), including finger foods like crackers.
Fruit and Vegetables
4 servings of fruits and vegetables per day (2-4 Tbsp).
Dairy, Meat and Poultry
1 serving of yogurt or finely chopped meat or poultry (2-4 Tbsp).

Toddler Feeding: 1-2 Years
Milk and Other Dairy
16-24 fl oz whole cow's milk per day (offer yogurt and other dairy products, as well).
Grains
Fortified cereals, breads, crackers, rice, pasta (a portion is 3-4 Tbsp, 2 crackers or 1/2 slice bread).
Fruit and Vegetables
About 1-2 cups of fruits and vegetables divided over a day.
Meat, Fish, Poultry and Eggs
1-2 servings of lean meat, eggs, fish, poultry or cooked dried beans per day. A serving can be 3-4 Tbsp.

Toddler Feeding: 2-3 Years
Milk and Other Dairy
16 fl oz low-fat or skim cow's milk per day (offer low-fat yogurt and other dairy products, as well).
Grains
Fortified cereals, breads, crackers, rice, pasta as appetite demands.
Fruit and Vegetables
About 2-3 cups of fruits and vegetables divided over a day.
Meat, Fish, Poultry and Eggs
2 servings of lean meat, eggs, fish, poultry or cooked dried beans per day. A serving can be 3-4 Tbsp.

My friend is a little bit hot-tempered and a no-nonsense person, although in the almost 15 years I've known her I know she's not the type to loof for trouble, but she also can't lie low and watch someone 'ride' her. And then I can't remember which, but I think she said either her MIL or SIL is also hot tempered, which is actually the real reason for her reluctance. She's afraid they might clash after a while.
I would suggest she wears humility like a cloak as she doesn't have a choice(does she?). She would have to overlook alot of issues from her in-laws. Staying apart from her husband shouldn't be an option.

My daughter had same thing about two weeks ago. Guess it was caused by residue of oil on her scalp 'cos i wasn't washing her hair regularly with soap.
My mum sectioned her hair and scrapped it out gently using a comb with wide teeth and also used the pads of her fingers while shampooing. After several days of applying this method her scalp became clear. To avoid further occurence i ensure i wash and oil her hair regularly and properly.

On Low Supply Of Breast Milk

New mothers can have a lot of concerns. They might lose their sleep over them too. But worrying about low milk supply? It’s one of the things that most new moms might fuss about. They wonder if the are making adequate milk for their baby. Fretting over milk supply is one reason many women quit breastfeeding! They don’t understand that they might be generating sufficient milk but don’t get the signs that they do.

The best way for you, as a mother, to know that you are making a sufficient amount of milk is by watching your baby gain weight (especially if it is exclusively breastfed). Your baby pees at least six times a day, which is another sign of a good quantity of milk production. When nursing on one breast, if your other breast begins to leak, it is a sign that you are making adequate milk. But if you have no medical reason to make less milk, it could be more because of poor breastfeeding management. Here are a few reasons:

1. Sticking to the clock:

If you feed your baby as per your timetable, you are likely to not give your baby enough. A baby feeds the best when he is hungry. When you feed your baby when he doesn’t show hunger cues, she will draw little milk from your breasts. You need to remember that the more your baby can suckle and draw milk from you, the more milk you will generate. With lesser milk release, you will generate lesser milk. This apart, women have different storage capacities in their breasts. If you are a mother with a small storage capacity, your baby might need to be fed very frequently in comparison to mothers with large storage capacity. Your baby would also have his biological clock that makes him look for a feed. But if it is a newborn baby that sleeps for prolonged periods, it needs to be woken up for the feeds.

2. Extra milk during hunger pangs:
Sometimes your baby might go in hunger pangs. You might want to keep your expressed breastmilk ready if you can’t be available at that moment. Instead, if your baby is fed formula milk in such situations, your breastmilk supply might decline. This is because your baby would begin to draw less milk from your breasts.

3. Sleep training:
If you are sleep training your baby before she is ready for it, she might end up sleeping longer. It will mean that she feeds less which in turn will impede your milk supply.

5. Using a pacifier or a dummy:
If your baby is put on a pacifier or a dummy, it could lead to nipple confusion. When your baby suckles on your breasts, it involves a different mechanism than when it suckles on a pacifier or dummy. It will lead to your baby suckling on your breasts less efficiently which would in turn cause low milk production.

6. Delayed feeding:

You might be enticed into giving your baby a dummy to suckle upon if you are busy. But a delayed feed will mean that she won’t suckle well enough, eventually causing less milk supply.

7. Less suckling time:
If your baby is not allowed to latch on to you for the time that he wants, then he will not be able to draw the required amount of milk. Less suckling time can negatively influence your milk supply. Your baby can be allowed to suckle for 45 minutes on your breasts!

8. Wrong positioning and latching:
If your baby is not positioned properly, she would not be comfortable enough to latch on properly either. With suboptimal positioning and improper latching, she would not be able to draw the required amount of milk. This will eventually lead to less milk production in you.

9. Tongue tie:
As a rare case, your baby could have a tongue tie which can make it difficult for her to suckle out the milk from your breasts. A tongue tie restricts the movement of the tongue and therefore your baby cannot suckle enough resulting in low milk supply. You might want to seek a lactation consultant’s help in such a case.

MamaOO and jamjam5000, I'm really surprised hearing the anti-formula stuff o shocked. I've been lucky with my hospitals maybe, my both children were given formula from birth! After putting dem to breast immediately after birth, next has to be formula cos I get too tired after all the child birth episodes. They also give me enough formula wen I'm going home grin

I'm not sure I will ever allow that no formula story! It can't work for me..lol
Lucky you sha.

Imagine. So the babe would have been made to suffer and possibly get dehydrated just because they want her to latch? Dem no well cheesy
Before we were allowed to leave the hospital, they wanted to be sure that the baby was properly latched etc...omo i use naija style for the Lactation specialist o.forced my nipple into her mouth and told them that she latches very well meanwhile i and the babe were hurting.

Very very good read. May God help us do right by our kids and may we encounter good and capable doctors, nurses and caregivers. My baby also had jaundice and I didn't know because nobody told me despite the fact that thedoctors and attendants at his birth knew he was jaundiced and had a slightly higher bilirubin level. The did nothing!. The only thing I noticed was that he was so lethargic (won't open his eyes, especially when the lights in the room were on). He also won't eat. He would try and latch, suck three or four times then get off again. They also refused me giving him formular! As at day two, he had eaten nothing!! It was until the pediatrician who also happened to be Nigerian came the next morning that she told me EBF is not a medal. I should try and give him formula. He won't also take the formular but I tried. Pumping breastmilk probably saved my son and allowed his bili levels drop so fast. He would not take more than 10ml then cos he was so weak from the sheer amount of bilirubin in him and they had to pass a tube through his nose and down his belly to make sure he's getting fed. I was not happy with it, but I knew it was needed cos I know his bilirubin level has to go down as fast as possible so as not to risk brain injury. If I was hell bent on putting him to my breast and trying to get in to suck, I would have entered one chance!

Here in the US, if you have certain insurances, you get any kind of breastpump for free but you need a Doctor's certification that you're indeed pregnant to get it. When I asked my OB for the referral when I was still pregnant, he absolutely refused to give me, talmbout how he won't give me one until I have the baby and latch has been established!. TF?? I had to go behind his back and talk to my insurance company who referred me to the breastpump providers and they contacted and got my referral directly from the doctor's office. This was a doctor who decided to still be seeing me every two weeks as at 37 weeks, when he was supposed to be seeing me every week. When I asked him, he said it's because my pregnancy was stress free and he doesn't see the need to see me every week. My hubby (he always went with me for my prenatal appointment screamed blue murder and threatened brimstone and fire at the doctor. he was so pissed! God forbid I develop pre-eclampsia or whatever in between those two weeks, how will they catch it? And this was a doctor, at a highbrow medical facilities that I decided to chose just because I thought they will offer superior service despite the higher out of pocket costs.

Sorry for my rant, that story was similar to what happned to me and had I listened to everything my OB said and not applied common sense, my case would have been sorry now. Please mamas, listen to your healthcare providers but also do your own research before seeing the doctor and ask questions. Question anything and everything (even if it means the healthcare providers will tire for your matter and give your side eyes). If any advise or recommendation they give you does not sound right or sit well with you, challenge it, ask why and research well. They do whatever you feel good about. Provided it's not detrimental. Now I pretty much pump all the time, and feed him bottles of breastmilk. At least I'm sure he's eating and how much he's getting to avoid stories that touch. If my supply goes down, I know immediately and find ways to rectify it. Once beaten, twice shy. I don't want stories that touch

Sorry for the uber long post. End of rant grin cheesy
Gosh!
Thank God for wisdom. My daughter couldn't latch on to my nipple at birth. We tried and tried but the hospital staff especially the lactation specialist insisted that she should be breast fed. Fortunately, her peadiatrician is Nigerian and told us in yoruba to express and give her a bottle. See as the babe guzzle the milk ehn i almost wept. So i would have just starved my baby for nothing. Now she takes expressed milk and formular. I can't shout o

Thanks, out of my way though. Ocean's Basket on the Island sells seafood, not Greek food. Strange.
Oh!i guess i know what she means. Ocean's basket gives you an option of Feta cheese as a dressing for salads.

Is that fish Greek too?

For the mama that asked where to get Greek food, well I know Greek salad is at shoprite, the one at alausa Ikeja. Then up stairs that mall, there's a restaurant call"ocean basket" they have it too ,its kind of better than the one sold at shoprite, don't get me wrong, didn't say shoprites Greek salad is bad .
It's lamb shanks not fish ma'am.

The best mashed potatoes, you need fresh herbs like basil or parsley, with sour cream and some salt and black pepper. The only problem is sour cream is hard to find in Lagos; today it is at Shoprite, tomorrow none.
Where were you seeing Greek food to crave??

Alphahandmaiden, please package Butter for us: Le President butter went from N950 to N1500 in less than 2 months. And I have been told by a very, VERY reliable source that next year will be even more "exciting", economy-wise. So just do a care package of Butter, some drugs, some medicated creams, maybe Cerelac (because that is now N1700 per can). cheesy

Raw eggs are now N50, Cway is N500, Spaghetti is N190 and there were absolutely no live chickens to b found in market.
Talking about greek food. Enjoy this
