its normal but if at 20wks you are yet to get 5% please switch to Layers mash.

You'll have to be vigilant with this type. It gets clogged after a while and you have to unscrew it to clear the clog. Cheers

True ooo, I am sure you can put something together, are you able to get the materials that you will need locally? There is a farm I visited sometime ago, they have a pit that they flush the poo into and some farmers or fish farmer come to pack them, So thinking about it, using a power hose to flush the poo on a daily bases. But then, the smell is a function of wetness that creates the chemical reaction, So, the deal is to keep the poo dry. I have not really invested time to check things out though, because I am not doing layers at the moment, and in my broilers pen, I am installing DIY water drinker (using the nipples) I will hang them up by tomorrow, that will cut the wetness by almost 80%, because the attendants while changing the water, spill a lot on the floor, and the birds step into it, and even knock over the water holder every now and then. So, with this system, we don't have to worry again about wetness as a result of water, only through their poo which can be managed. Also, there is a DIY I saw on using a 4" PVC pipe to construct their feeder, in such a way that they won't spill the feed on the floor. There will be a small mechanism that will help push the feed through the pipe so that the attendants are not going through the pen filling one feeder at a time, also this will curtail feed wastage. With all this in place the work will be less tedious for my staffs, it will also curtail mortality as their will always be fresh water running in the water drinker.
As I think about entering the layers market before this year runs out, I will start doing some investigation, though I have the largest space in the area where my farm is, at the same time I don't want to a nuisance to them, I want to be corporate responsible. LOL!!!

oga fnk, we think alike, am already working on using the nipples for my layers on the floor. i bought some nipple drinkers and am expecting them next month. the nipples(attached to a PVC) will be adjustable to suit the age of the birds. i belive this method will keep the pen dry and free from disease.

you are doing well. please reduce the height of the block. you need to increase the air movement in your pen since the fence is already part of the pen.

also if you are going for a long term business, i will advice you to start with DOC. but if you need qucik cash and you have the money go for POL but ENSURE i say ENSURE you buy from a reputable farm.

@farmtech pls which feed do u use for ur birds, i've abt a thousand birds @ 5weeks and i'm currently using vital feed starter bt i don't want to continue wit it, i heard top feeds is better. Pls ur advice is needed.

like farmtech said, topfeed is good. that is what am using but the cost is high. for layers we buy N2,400(plus transportation) but you can get other feed below N2,300. am considering changing to other products(supreme, hybird, livestock) or i will mill my own feed.

Though i've not been to your farm, but i believe from your posts you're living my dream 4 the broiler business. (Can we have an appointment pls. 2014 was in deed a very great year 4 me. Full of challenges with great lessons learnt. Some painful, some hillariously painful (because it exposed how naive one can be when it comes to business). Thank God for the progress achieved as well. I started with and still doing Broilers, but gradually the Pullets are growing along. Though I,ve not started making income that match the investment, slowly but surely we will get there.

My appreciation also goes to all those who responded to my need during one of the respiratory crisis i experienced with the birds. Here we are those pullets will be 17weeks tue Jan.

My Advice 4 all:
CREDIT AND TRUST is key in Biz, be careful when choosing those you give these previlages.

Pls how best do one treat Salmonellosis infection in poultry. My birds (laying and pullets) are both infected and mortality is occurring.
Vet Doc after post mortem examination prescribed Gentamycin and Ciprofloxacin for lauers and pullets respectively.
The doses have been completed now but 1 or 2 birds still die daily and some pullets show severe signs of sickness.

Some1 suggested the use of Penicillin and Streptomycin but am scared of its effect - it weakens the birds.

Any other suggestion?

Where is ur location? If u are close to ibadan send one carcass to animal care lab for test. The test will reveal which drug to us.

If u are not close to ibadan n you are through wit the drugs precribed by the vet, give the birds some weeks, they will be ok though u might have some moralities.

Also place them on multivitamin. Pls note that too much antibiotics its not good for birds

Chairman, we are doing well. The layer biz is good and less stressful compared to what I heard about broilers. Am bringing in new birds dis jan. I might add 50 broilers to test run.
I will also experiment with about 10 layers as you did. lol

this year will be good for all of us and I pray for the unity of this country to enable us actualize our dreams.

But how can you get the market without starting? I say go in small, and build from there. We are coming up small small, I think this 2015 will be much better for us, we sold quite a few of our birds this holidays, and that is good, because our product is getting into the hands of more people, the idea for us now, is to get more customers that will patronize our birds on a regular bases. How is the egg side? I bought 200 day old layers to experiment, I want to see what will happen without given them the conventional medication/vaccination regiment, just the medication they get in their first 10 days. The experiment I conducted in 2011 worked, but they were only 10 layers, so you cannot count on that. I will see how it goes, then I will take lectures from you pros on that side of poultry business.

Thank you for coming to my aid, we can all learn from each other here, I think I have given General premises of my stuff here, some might have been able to pick on it but others might be wanting me to just spell it out. I am sure there are people here that have better stuff than I do. They might not just be talking but they are good. One cool thing about this our thread, is that we are not all conglomerates, most of us are mom and pop, there are so much info in this thread that you can get to any hieght in this poultry business. So, I think we should take what we have been given, add our own innovation to it and run with it.
I have learned a lot this past year, and hope to do better this new year. Am I making money yet? For how much I have invested into my poultry, and still investing, Noooooooooo!!! Very far from it.

what compromise

there is always a compromise in every relationship. Both should look for a workable compromise to achieve their aim. For example, they should attend their separate churches but agree to support each other when d need arises.

They can marrry. Church should not be a problem but nigerians make a big deal out of it. I will advice both to pray and reach a compromise on how to run their family

Brown layers are more efficient than black and less susceptible to heat stroke. There used to be a difference in the sale price as spent layer becos black are usually heavier than brown but now they are priced alike.
If you want to maximise ur layer bird go for brown. There is a school of thot that says black are hardier birds than brown in my experience brown birds exposes bad management faster so if you handle ur birds right brown birds iSA brown rules!
