this means we should be wearing gloves in public places.

missterious: I think you can store beans for up to 6 months with Phostoxin tablets, 1 or 2 tablets per 1000kg of beans. Make sure it has no contact with the beans though, wrap it up before putting in the bag.

where can one get Phostoxin tablets?

hello house, lets shed more light on how to store the following:

maize(esp for poultry farmers)
tomato(for cateens)
cassava(for garri proceesing, akpu and for exporting biz)
melon(there is a thread for this)
soya bean,
vegetables(ugu, waterleaf, etc)

these are money spinning biz and i want guys to venture into any of them

you know say different kinds of yam dey, from water to yellow to Chinese to trifoliate yam, before you store, ensure careful harvesting is done to prevent bruises which can pave way for decay during storage...
..after this you then CURE the yam to make the layers hard and prevent from quick attack from fungicide. you can achieve this simply by pitting( dig small pit, arrange ur yams in it and cover with thin soil) for just 10-14 days...
after this, you can now employ any storage method of your choice, be it barn, open shelf, ventilated pits....
....if you do this, if your yams no last for 4 months and above.... then na SPIRITUAL yam oooo!!!!

thank you very much for this input. this year yam is very costly and those who prepared well are already making money. as the new yeam is coming out the old one is becoming expensive.

@dav8id, how do i control rat and other insects that might attack the yam. I intend to store the yam for at least 6months.

also what about the beans. How do I store it .

Again, a friend's black layers of 15wks just started dying in an alarming rate abt a week plus now. He has tried many drugs to no avail. He got them from zartech. Pro in d huz pls what do u suggest this guy do? He is virtually seeing all his cash go dwn d drain. Their poo is almost gud just small of watery brown and whitish poo at times.

Tell ur friend to visit the nearest lab for test. The test will reveal the actual cause and the right vaccine/drug to use.

Hello fellow farmers.i opened this thread for us to rob minds on how to effectively process and store farm produce. Storing farm produce is another way of making money in addition to what we are doing already.

For example, someone mentioned in another thread how he bought melon for 28K and sold it 43k after 2-3 months of storage. Last year people bought yam for N100 and now they are selling 500-700

pls lets share how we can process and store different farm produce.

Pls no selling of book here. Its just a discussion thread.

It depends on your location. Here in abuja the demand for egg is high after the ramadan fast. Try and look for new environment and market ur egg.

My fellow farmers, is there a way of grinding and storing egwusi to last more than a month? Like someone mentioned above I want to package it so it can be picked on shelf.

@jedisco, the cost of egg differs from one location to another. In enugu some farmers sell egg for 500 while some sell 600. In jos you get a different price too.in Abuja farmers sell eggs for 600/650


As for ur second question; which of them do you have passion for? For me the two are profitable so let your passion be the determining factor .

Make sure the vet has a farm or work for a good farm. Dont take a vet that stay always in his office/shop

You MUST have PASSION for this biz else nothing for you.

It takes about 800-1000 to rear a birds till it start laying and this depend on some factors like type of feed , doctor and the vaccines .

agonbello: Ok. Then try and source for a solar dryer, create a space for it and be drying your litter with it.
A simple solar dryer is like a glass, it converts solar energy do heat energy. You install it like a shade and place what ever u want to dry under it. With the presence oof the sun, it will dry ur litter completely in less than 5hours.
Note that its an additional investment, u spend money (am not sure how much) in procuring and installing the dryer, and you get additional revenue from selling the dried litter.

agonbello: Look for crop farmers and be selling to them at a giveaway price. They will surely finish up ur litter completely.

the crop farmers are always looking for dry litter and with the battery cage my litter is always wet. at a point we resorted to digging hole for the litter but how many holes can we do in our samll farm. its giving me headache. and too much litter is bad for the birds because of high nitrogen content.

fnk: I am still queuing up for this odor elimination system, though I am only focusing on broilers at the moment but I will like to also go into layers, but why I haven't done it is the odor palaver, I have enough space on my land to do layers, but my concern is that I don't want to be a nuisance to my neighbors, so with this system and if it works, I won't have to go buy another land in the boonies somewhere just to do layers. So I will get with you as time goes on to inspect experimental farm you talked about and we go from there.

my brother, the odour is something else especially when you are using battery cage. Am thinking of how to handle the waste in my farm. Its a big challenge for us. We pack the litter every 2 days but no where to dispose them. I wish there is a solution to this because I have neighbours around.

Only poultry manure is not that good bc of its low carbon content. U'll have to combine it with a source of carbon like cow dung, rice hull, i've forgotten others.

He can use poultry manure considering the capacity of his farm.

i will be constructing one very soon (mini biodigester) and i hope some people will join me when i start.

easy bro. They will soon start. Increase the day light to 16hours. Also gradually introduce layers feed to them.5 months is enough to gain the required body weight unless you did not take care of them during the 18wks of brooding and rearing

i bought my cages for 60k here in Abuja. but i will advice you to try and find ways of reducing cost to maximize profit.

you can contact obnelly to help convert your waste to gas for your generator since you have a big farm like that.

I admire your speed and courage...you definitely have a big setup in mind. Am sure you must have practiced poultry before or have some big poultry mentors to guide you. Your next set of expenses will definitely be poultry cages and a store to keep tons of maize and soya.
I have about 9000 birds now and currently outsourcing my milling, I intend to self-mill only when i can utilise a trailer of maize and soya in 5 weeks

9000 birds...how do u handle the litter? Thats a big challenge for me now.i have more than 1k birds and the litter we remove every 2days is much. I wanted to use Obnelly idea of converting the litter to energy or gas but we are still in the temporary site. I need help as how to handle the litter.
