Vance says Pope Leo wrong to say politicians must never wage war US Vice President JD Vance has told a conservative Turning Point USA conference in Georgia that he still admires Pope Leo despite feeling “frustrated” at the pontiff’s criticism of US policies. But he said the pope was wrong to say political figures should not wield the sword and that the pontiff should “be careful when he talks about matters of theology”. “Was God on the side of the Americans who liberated France from the Nazis? Was God on the side of the Americans who liberated Holocaust camps and liberated those innocent people from those who had survived the Holocaust? I certainly think the answer is yes,” Vance said. |

CENTCOM says US blockade on Iranian ports applies to ships of all nations US Central Command says the blockade on Iranian ports “is being enforced impartially against vessels of all nations entering or leaving coastal areas or ports in Iran”. Trump tells Pope Leo Iran must not have nuclear weapon The US president has issued another statement on his Truth Social account about his widening feud with Pope Leo. “Will someone please tell Pope Leo that Iran has killed at least 42,000 innocent, completely unarmed, protesters in the last two months, and that for Iran to have a Nuclear Bomb is absolutely unacceptable,” Trump wrote. “AMERICA IS BACK!!!” he added. The statement comes two days after Trump attacked Pope Leo on social media, calling him “weak on crime” and “terrible on foreign policy”. His comments came after the pontiff, the first US-born pope, criticised the US and Israel’s war on Iran. Pope Leo then said he had “no fear” of the Trump administration and would continue to denounce the horrors of war. Meanwhile, the basis of Trump’s claim that 42,000 people were killed during antigovernment protests in Iran in January remains unclear. The Iranian government has said that 3,117 people were killed, while groups outside the country put the figure at some 7,007. UN Special Rapporteur on Iran Mai Soto has said that at least 5,000 people were killed, but that the real death toll could be as high as 20,000. Separately, the UN’s atomic watchdog has said there is no evidence of Iran building a nuclear weapon. |

I thought she had courage, but I was wrong,” the US president told the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. Trump’s comments came after Meloni’s far-right government said it would suspend the automatic renewal of its defence cooperation agreement with Israel. “Giorgia Meloni doesn’t want to help us in the war. I’m shocked,” Trump said. “Do people like the fact that your president isn’t doing anything to get the oil [in Iran]?” Earlier, in a rare moment, Meloni criticised remarks by Trump against Pope Leo, calling them “unacceptable”. “She is the one who is unacceptable,” Trump told the Italian newspaper in response. “Because she doesn’t care if Iran has a nuclear weapon and would blow up Italy in two minutes if it had the chance.” |

Lebanon's President Joseph Aoun, who is not in the US, says he hopes the talks will mark the "beginning of the end" of Lebanon's suffering. He also says stability "will not return" to southern Lebanon if Israel "continues its occupation". For context, Israeli troops are carrying out ground operations in southern Lebanon to create what officials describe as a security buffer zone along the border. This has raised fears that parts of Lebanon could remain under occupation even after the war. |

China warns of countermeasures against US over tariff hikes threat China has threatened “countermeasures” if the US “goes ahead with the tariff hikes on China”, which Beijing says follows false media reports saying it provided military support to Iran. “Media reports accusing China of providing military support to Iran are purely fabricated,” China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on X. “If the US goes ahead with the tariff hikes on China on the basis of these accusations, China will respond with countermeasures. “China always acts prudently and responsibly on the export of military products, and exercises strict control in accordance with China’s laws and regulations and due international obligations.” |

While there has been no US response, “we’re very positive in getting this other window,” said Energy Secretary Sharon Garin. “If it doesn’t come through, we have other options also.” The country’s sole oil refinery secured nearly 2.5 million barrels last month after at least four million barrels in shipments were cancelled since the start of the US-Israel war on Iran. Washington last month eased some sanctions tied to Russia’s war on Ukraine to allow countries to buy Russian oil already at sea until April 11, in a move to stabilise energy markets after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. |
