Vance says US has made ‘our final and best offer’ The US vice president says the negotiating team was in contact with Trump throughout the talks. “We were talking to the president consistently. I don’t know how many times we talked to him, a half dozen times, a dozen times over the past 21 hours,” he said. “So, look, we were constantly in communication with the team, because we were negotiating in good faith. And we leave here, and we leave here with a very simple proposal, a method of understanding that is our final and best offer. We’ll see if the Iranians accepted.” |
Vance says ‘we were quite flexible’ but were not able to make headway The US vice president says the two sides discussed a number of issues. “We just could not get to a situation where the Iranians were willing to accept our terms. I think we were quite flexible, we were quite accommodating,” he said. “The president told us, ‘You need to come here in good faith and make your best effort to get a deal’. We did that, and unfortunately, we weren’t able to make a headway.” |
Vance says US needs ‘affirmative commitment’ from Iran on the nuclear issue When asked what the Iranians have rejected, the US vice president said he would not get into the details, but the US is seeking confirmation that Iran will not seek a nuclear weapon. “The simple fact is that we need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon, and they will not seek the tools that would enable him to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon. That is the core goal of the President of the United States, and that’s what we’ve tried to achieve through these negotiations,” he said. “Again, their nuclear programmes such as it is, the enrichment facilities that they had before, they’ve been destroyed. But the simple question is, do we see a fundamental commitment of will for the Iranians not to develop a nuclear weapon, not just now, not just two years from now, but for the long term? We haven’t seen that yet. We hope that we will.” |
Vance says he’s returning to US without deal The US vice president has made very brief remarks to the media. He began his comments by thanking Pakistani prime minister and army chief, describing them as “incredible hosts”. “Whatever shortcomings of the negotiation, it wasn’t because of the Pakistanis who did an amazing job and really tried to help us and the Iranians bridge the gap and get to a deal. We’ve been at it now for 21 hours, and we’ve had a number of substantive discussions with the Iranians. That’s the good news,” Vance said. “The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement, and I think that’s bad news for Iran much more than it’s bad news for the United States of America. So, we go back to the United States, having not come to an agreement. We’ve made very clear what our red lines are, what things we’re willing to accommodate them on, and what things we’re not willing to accommodate them on. And we made that as clear as we possibly could, and they have chosen not to accept our terms.” |
Vance says Iran has chosen not to accept US terms The US vice president says there are shortcomings in talks with Iran and that the Iranian delegation has chosen not to accept Washington’s terms. |

Netanyahu says campaign against Iran “not yet over” amid ceasefire talks in Pakistan Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the campaign against Iran is “not yet over” as the US and Iran conducted ceasefire negotiations in Pakistan in an effort to end the war. “The campaign is not yet over, but it can already be said clearly - we have achieved historic results,” Netanyahu said in Hebrew in a televised statement on Saturday evening. In a 13-minute speech that appeared to be directed at a domestic audience, Netanyahu listed what he said were Israel’s major accomplishments during the war, including the killing of Iran’s top leadership and the destruction of its nuclear and missile capabilities. Noting Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium, Netanyahu said it will be removed either by an agreement or “by other means.” “Iran is begging for a ceasefire,” Netanyahu claimed. “The regime of terror is deeply weakened. They are fighting for their own survival.” Netanyahu also said he had approved direct talks with Lebanon, set to take place in Washington next week. He said any agreement must include the disarmament of Hezbollah and be a true peace agreement “that will endure for generations.” |
Strait of Hormuz: What is each side demanding? The Gulf waterway, which has been effectively blocked by Iran since the US-Israeli war began, is a major transit point for about 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. The biggest-ever disruption has fuelled inflation and slowed the global economy, with an impact expected to last for months even if negotiators succeed in reopening the strait. Here is what the US and Iran are each demanding: Tehran is demanding control of the Strait of Hormuz. It also seeks to collect transit fees from vessels seeking to transit through the waterway. Trump’s stated goals have varied during the war, but the US has said it wants free passage for global shipping through the strait. Earlier this week, Trump caused widespread alarm and anger after he said “a whole civilisation will die” in Iran unless its government agreed to allow ships to freely pass through Hormuz |
