According to new study, women with diabetes have higher risks of developing heart failure than their male counterparts.

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death globally. Recent research has shown that people with diabetes have a higher risk of developing heart failure. Before now, researchers are unaware of the role gender plays in diabetics developing heart failure.

Researchers compared roughly 12 million men and women. They discovered that women with type 1 diabetes had a 47 percent higher risk of heart failure compared with men with type 1 diabetes. Also, women with type 2 diabetes had a 9 percent higher risk of getting heart failure than men with type 2 diabetes. This result is from a study published in May 2019 in Diabetologia

The lead researcher at the George Institute for Global Health in Newton, Australia, Toshiaki Ohkuma, PhD, said:

"The increased risk of heart failure succeeding a diabetes diagnosis is considerably higher in women than men, which highlights the importance of intensive prevention and treatment of diabetes in women.”

It is yet unclear what could be the cause for the difference, but scientists where able to come up with some theories.

The prediabetes period (period when blood sugar levels are high but you may not have diabetes symptoms yet), may be longer in women by as much as two years, which may be connected to a greater risk of heart failure.

Symptoms of heart attacks in women are not well diagnosed and often go without treatment, which may also lead to a bigger chance of heart failure among women.

An endocrinologist, Robert Busch MD, said the symptoms of heart attack in women are less known than the symptoms in men. This is probably because many women experience silent heart attacks. Since the first attack is untreated, the second heart attack is often more deadly than the first.

According to the researchers of this study, gender differences in managing diabetes could strengthen these links. This is because factually women have had poorer control of blood sugar than men.

“More research needs to be conducted to understand the mechanisms supporting the excess risk of heart failure caused by diabetes, particularly type 1 in women.

Preventing Diabetes

Doctors are well aware of the relationship between heart failure and diabetes and, according to Dr. Busch, “Given this close relationship, we try to make sure to treat diabetes while protecting and caring for the heart.”

Steps you can take to cut down your chances of developing heart failure includes:

Monitor your blood sugar and take all diabetes medications as prescribed. Consult your doctor regularly to check if your prescription needs updating.
Monitor your blood pressure. For people with diabetes, a systolic pressure of 130 to 140 and diastolic pressure of around 90 are ideal.
Watch your cholesterol. Endeavor to regularly monitor your LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) levels. Your doctor may prescribe statin drugs to help lower your chances of developing heart disease.
Maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise routine. Avoid high-fat and high-carb foods. See your doctor before beginning any new exercise programs to ensure your heart is not affected by physical stress.

Syphilis

Treatment for end-stage kidney disease
In some cases, medications cannot help your kidneys keep up with waste and fluid clearance on their own. When this occurs, the person may develop complete or near-complete kidney failure, a condition called end-stage kidney disease. At that point, you need dialysis or a kidney transplant.

This is the process of removing waste products and extra fluid from your blood artificially, when your kidneys can no longer do this. There are two types of dialysis:
Hemodialysis. This involves a machine filtering waste and excess fluids from your blood.

Peritoneal dialysis. This involves inserting a thin tube (catheter) into your abdomen, which fills your abdominal cavity with a dialysis solution that absorbs waste and excess fluids. After a period of time, the dialysis solution drains from your body, carrying the waste with it.

Kidney transplant.This is placing a healthy kidney from a donor into your body surgically. Transplanted kidneys can come from deceased or living donors. You’ll need to take medications for the rest of your life to keep your body from rejecting the new organ.

Stretches

2. Yoga Poses
Cobra: Lie on the floor face-down, keeping your toes pointed away from you. Press your palms into the floor and slowly raise your upper body. Your elbows should remain close to your side.

Extended leg balance: Put all your weight on one foot while standing. Use a chair or table for support and gradually lift your leg and hold it with one leg on the outside of your knee. For an even better stretch, rotate your leg out to the side from that position and hold.

Seated spinal twist: Sit up tall in a chair and put your hand on the outside of the opposite thigh. Gently twist in the direction of your arm and hold. Switch to the other side.

3. Strength Exercises
Rheumatoid arthritis can slowly take away muscle mass. So, it’s essential to work out your muscles to help them remain strong.

You can do isometric exercises if you have swollen joints. They hold your muscles in one place. They also don’t make you move your joints.

If your joints aren’t swollen, isotonic exercises (movements that work against resistance, like weightlifting) are good for building up muscles. Discuss with your doctor before you start any kind of strength training.

Bicep lifts: While you sit in a chair with your arms resting on your thighs palms up, hold light weights in your hands. Then, raise them toward your shoulders, bending at the elbow.

Seated knee lift: With a resistance band over your legs in a seated position, raise one leg slowly, then switch sides.

4. Exercises for Endurance
Aerobic exercises raise your breathing and heart rates. Engage in exercises that get your blood pumping while being easy on your joints.

Walking: Taking daily walks are important. Start with slow and short strolls if you’re new to regular exercise. Then work up to longer, faster walks as you get stronger. Ensure to stretch before you start and after you finish. Drink lots of water, too.

Cycling: A stationary bike takes away your risk of a fall. Start slowly if you’re a beginner, and go faster as you get better.

Swimming: Water exercise like swimming is great when you have rheumatoid arthritis. They take weight off your joints. They also raise your heart rate. Water also acts as resistance against your muscles. That can make you stronger.

Coughing is a normal body function, but when it lasts for a protracted time, it can affect daily activities. A chronic cough can either be wet  or dry.  It can produce phlegm or tickle the throat.

A cough that last longer than 8 weeks is considered chronic. For children, if cough lasts longer than 4 weeks, then it is chronic. Common causes include allergies, asthma, bronchitis, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It can be a sign of a heart cough or lung disease in some cases.

What causes a chronic cough?

Chronic cough can be caused by different factors. Sometimes, more than one factor may be responsible. Some common causes of chronic cough includes:

Bronchitis. This causes long-term inflammation of the airways that can result to a severe cough. Bronchitis can be part of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), an airway disease that is mostly caused by excessive smoking.

Asthma. Asthma causes the upper airways to be sensitive to irritants in the air, cold air, or exercise.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). When acid comes back up from a person’s stomach and into their throat, the condition is called GERD. It leads to chronic irritation in the throat, and subsequently, cough.
Lingering after-effects of infection. Severe infection can cause a chronic cough to linger. Examples are flu and pneumonia. The airways can still be inflamed even when most of their symptoms have subsided or disappeared.
Postnasal drip. A postnasal drip is the result of mucus dripping down the back of the throat. This irritates the throat and triggers a cough reflex.
Blood pressure-lowering medications. Medications to lower blood pressure such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors can cause a chronic cough in some people.
Less-common causes

Some less common causes of a chronic cough include:

Cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis causes excess mucus in the lungs and airways, which can lead to a chronic cough.

Morning bright light therapy can help people who have trouble getting to sleep early and waking up early (delayed sleep phase disorder). This can help shift the circadian rhythm. Get exposure to sunlight between 6–9 am in the morning for around 30 minutes to an hour. If you don’t have access to naturally bright sunlight in the morning, you can place a commercial fluorescent lamp at arm’s length. Keep to dim light in the evenings and stick to relaxing activities such as listening to calming music or reading a book. You should see an improvement in 2–4 days though you’ll need to continue your new pattern for about a month until you get used to it.

On the other hand, if you can fall asleep early in the evening without trouble but wake up too early in the morning (advanced sleep phase disorder), evening bright light therapy may help you. Here you get exposure to bright light in the late afternoon, early evening, and even late evening. Take a walk and spend time outdoors in the early evening. If natural light isn’t available in the evening, use artificial light such as during winter. Continue to keep the lights on as you watch TV or go about activities in the evening. Avoid bright light in the mornings and wear sunglasses if you go out. Light exercise in the early evening can also be helpful. In a week or two, you should feel less sleepy in the evenings, be able to sleep for longer early morning, and get more sleep overall.

Cystitis is a common lower urinary tract infection. It is an inflammation of the bladder wall that is caused by a bacterial infection.

Declining estrogen levels: The levels of estrogen usually drop during menopause as the lining of a woman’s urethra gets thinner. The thinner the lining becomes, the higher the chances are of infection and damage. The risk increases during menopause.
Gender: The urethral opening of a woman is closer to the anus than that of a man. The chances of bacteria from the intestines gaining access to the urethra is higher in women.
Mucus reduction: Menopausal women produce less mucus in the vaginal area. This mucus acts as a protective layer against bacteria.
Radiotherapy: Late radiation cystitis can cause damage to the bladder. Menopausal women on hormone replacement therapy (HRT), have a lower risks of developing cystitis compared to those not on HRT.

Diagnosis

A doctor will ask the patient some questions, carry out an examination, and do a urine test to diagnose cystitis. A urine culture or catheterized urine specimen may be performed to check the type of bacteria in the urine. After finding out which specific bacterium is causing the infection, the doctor will prescribe an oral antibiotic.

Most doctors will also offer to test for a sexually transmitted infection (STI). STIs often have similar symptoms to cystitis. Patients who get cystitis regularly may need further tests. This may include an X-ray, an ultrasound scan, or a cystoscopy of the bladder.

The following home remedies and measures may help:

Abstaining from sex reduces the chance of bacteria entering the urethra.
Painkillers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen, may relieve discomfort.

The team tested the impact of small doses of triclosan on a range of mouse models. The scientists gave each mouse model a brief, low-level exposure to triclosan.

The team established that in all mouse models used, triclosan prompted inflammation of the colon, aggravated symptoms of colitis (inflammation of the lining of the colon), and promoted colitis-associated tumor growth.

Some models were particularly sensitive. Co-author Hang Xiao explains, We used a genetically engineered mouse model which develops spontaneous inflammatory bowel disease or IBD.”

“Treatment with triclosan significantly increased disease development of IBD in the mice, suggesting that IBD patients may need to reduce exposure to this compound, Xiao stated.”

The scientists also wanted to understand exactly why triclosan appeared to have this pro-tumor, pro-inflammation effect. They establish that triclosan changed the composition of the gut microbiome expressively. This effect has previously been established in humans, too.

They also proved that triclosan did not have adverse health effects in mice without a microbiome. To support this discovery further, they revealed that genetically modified mice who lacked toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) did not experience the hostile effects.

This is important because TLR4 is known to play an important role in communication between gut bacteria and their host.

Taken together, these findings deduce a role for gut bacteria in the destructive effect of triclosan on colon health.

According to the researchers, since this compound is so widely used, the study suggests that there is an crucial need to further estimate the impact of triclosan exposure on gut health in preparation for the potential establishment of further regulatory policies.
