Romance / 5 Ways Cheating Has Become Easier With Social Media by jannydear(f): 6:08am On Jan 14, 2018
Cheating in relationships isn’t a new trend, however, with the advancement of technology and escalating reliance on social media, cheating on partners has become as easy as pie.

Most people join social media platforms in search of partners, while some use same media to cheat on their spouses.

Prior to the era of social media like Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and even basic stuff like e-mail, it was much harder to fall for the temptation of cheating on your partner. A person could physically get themselves out of a situation which could likely lead to infidelity in the past, now it is almost impossible. Here are 5 ways social media is helping partners cheat easier.

Social media provides more varieties

Social media permits an extensive pool of choices and temptations for men or women. Consequently, social media helps generate the idea of cheating for the purpose of trying something new and different with scarcely any limits whatsoever.

Having multiple social media accounts
Social media accounts are awfully easy to open and in most cases, all you need is just an email address and your phone number then 5 minutes later, you are set to begin chatting with new friends. As such, unfaithful partners can easily operate multiple unknown social media accounts while they engage in cheating spree.

Social media means you can cheat anytime, anywhere

A cheating partner don’t have to make out time to cross town to meet someone or go to dingy clubs to scout for a potential person to flirt with. All it takes is just a swipe of a finger, irrespective of the location, city or nation.

There is no evidence for partners to find
It is quite difficult for a partner to find out they are being cheated upon because browsing history can be wiped off, message history can be deleted and accounts can be logged out. With all evidence of cheating gone, unfaithful partners are triggered to continue in their game without fear of getting caught.

Encourages uploading of attractive photos

Social media platforms like Instagram and snapchat, focuses more on visual content. Social media users have constantly step up their game by uploading more and more attractive photos just to gain fame and status on the social media sites. This leads to interaction and flirting with the opposite sex which leads to partners being unfaithful to their spouses.

Health / People Residing Near Mobile Phone Masts Are More Likely To Get Cancer by jannydear(f): 9:13pm On Jan 13, 2018
Reports from a recent research has claimed that people living near telecommunication towers are at a higher risk of developing cancer.

The study asserts that cancer rates tripled among people living within 400 metres of mobile phone towers. According to the report in Germany, the condition is worse for people living within 100 meters of the towers. The study reveals they were exposed to radiation at 100 times above normal levels.

READ ALSO: Sleeping for Less Than 7 Hours Regularly Increases Your Risk of Heart Diseases, Study Finds

The researchers stated that the likelihoods of getting cancer are enormous with more than one billion mobile phone subscribers and around 130,000 mobile phone towers globally.

The power levels of these towers are moderately low, the antennas are mounted high above ground level, and the signals are transmitted spasmodically, rather than frequently.

Mobile phones connect with nearby mobile towers mainly through radio frequency (RF) waves which, like FM radio, are forms of non-ionising radiation which means they do not damage the DNA cells directly.

The human body, which consists of 70 per cent fluid, absorbs electromagnetic radiation.

People residing near mobile phone base stations are at risk of memory loss, nausea, headaches, muscle spasms, dizziness, tremors, numbness, tingling, altered reflexes, muscle and joint paint, leg/foot pain, depression, and sleep disturbance. In far more severe cases, symptoms may include paralysis, seizures and stroke.

Mobile phone radiation

On the other hand, recent studies also confirm that mobile phone radiation can severely affect male fertility.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine reported in 2006 that use of mobile phones by men is linked with a decrease in semen quality, sperm count, motility, viability and normal morphology. Studies have found a 30 per cent sperm decline in those who use a mobile phone excessively.

READ ALSO: Heart Attacks More Severe in Morning than Night, Study Finds

Electromagnetic fields affect the brain which explains why people who use mobile phones before bed or while lying on the bed, are susceptible to to suffer from headaches, confusion and depression.

Constant use of mobile phones for more than a decade increases the risk of brain cancer. Studies have shown that the risk is highest on the side of the head where the mobile phone is held.

Today’s teenagers are five times more likely to get brain cancer. Non-thermal effects of radio frequency radiation accumulate over time and the symptoms begin to manifest after being exposed to the radiation over the years.

Pets / Scientists Condemn Trend Of Feeding Pets Raw Meat After Study Finds Pathogens by jannydear(f): 2:48am On Jan 13, 2018
he drift for feeding pets raw meat has been condemned by scientists, who say it often contains bacteria and parasites that could pose dangers to both pets and their owners.

A budding trend has seen pet owners plump for products such as meat, bones and organs which can be bought frozen and then defrosted before being fed to dogs and cats.

Most pet owners on this trend consider raw meat for pets more natural and can solve issues like allergies and skin problems. Also, they feel raw meat solves the problems of additives and contamination that goes with processed food.

READ ALSO: Facts About By-Products, Corn and Grains For Your Pets

However scientists have debunked such reports, saying there is no evidence of such health benefits and that raw meat diets can cause growth problems, dental and gut injuries in pets.

Paul Overgaauw, co-author of the new research from Utrecht University in the Netherlands said;

“We see that more and more people are feeding cats and dogs this kind of product and we know that meat is infected with bacteria and parasites.”

The researchers describe how they analyzed samples from 35 raw meat diet products across eight brands available in the Netherlands – a country where more than half of dog owners are thought to feed their dog with raw meat.

After melting the meat, the scientists looked for the presence of salmonella, listeria, E coli and antibiotic-resistant E coli as well as two types of parasites: species of Sarcocystis and Toxoplasma gondii. The results reveal that 23% of the products tested contained a type of E coli that can cause renal failure in humans, while 80% of products across seven brands contained E coli, which is resistant to antibiotic. Also species of listeria were found in more than half of products, while salmonella species were found in 20%, species of sarcocystis in 23% and Toxoplasma gondii in 6%.

Parasites are rendered harmless by freezing, but bacteria are not, and both posed a risk in home-prepared raw meat diets – not only to the pet but owners as well, either directly, as a result of cross-contamination of human food, or through exposure to pathogens shed by the animals, Overgaauw noted.

Daniel Chan, professor of emergency and critical care medicine and clinical nutrition at the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals, who was not involved in the research, said the new study added to a growing body of evidence on raw meat diets for pets.

“We have known that there are risks associated with raw meat feed diets since the early 2000s, but this is the first [research] in Europe that has gone as far as to check commercially available frozen raw meat diets,” he said.

Chan added that the study was vital as it showed that buying commercial, frozen products than home-prepared food, did not evade the dangers of pathogens. “The most concerning from our public health point of view is that they are finding multi-drug resistant bacteria in the food source,” he said.

“If you buy mince from a supermarket you are likely to have bacteria, but because you cook it you are not at risk,” added Chan, pointing out that commercial raw meat diets were not designed to be cooked because it could break down supplements that have been added to them.

Chan stressed that vets should discuss the risks of raw meat with owners, adding that it was not yet known what the best defenses were.

Pets / Why Dogs Behave The Way They Do by jannydear(f): 1:47pm On Jan 10, 2018
To build a better relationship with your dog, you can begin by working to understand the meaning and causes behind some of the most common dog behaviors.

Why Does a Dog Chase its Tail?
According to a research by a group of Turkish researchers at the University of Uludag in Bursa, Turkey, the reason why a dog chase its tail may be biological. A connection was found between habitual tail-chasing and high blood-cholesterol levels.

The team examined 15 tail-chasing dogs to establish the fact that they had no other problem or diseases while fifteen healthy, dogs with normal behavior were used as controls. Each dog’s blood sample was taken after a 12–16-hour fasting period. Total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were all measured.

The scientists discovered that that the tail-chasing dogs had expressively higher levels of total cholesterol and both high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol than did the control dogs. The other measures did not differ between the two groups.

The research team deduced from the results that dog tail-chasing behavior may be linked with serum cholesterol elevation.

Why Do Dogs Spin Around Before They Defecate?
Dogs act in strange ways, before or after they defecate. Some dogs will normally spin around before they squat to have a bowel movement. Some even eat their poo or kick their back legs over it. According to study, dogs prefer defecating while their body is aligned north-to-south with the earth’s magnetic fields

Why Do Some Dogs Suck on Items such as Blankets?
Some dogs suck or chew on blankets, a behavior is said to be connected with the dog’s experience as a puppy. Breeds that are famous for blanket-sucking behavior are Dachshunds and Doberman Pinschers. Dobermans suck on blankets and also on themselves.

Puppies are born with a nature to nurse at mother’s “milk bar,” and if provided with this opportunity, they will suck to their satisfaction, or until at some later stage of development when the female kicks against their attempts. Occasionally, some pups will still return to their mother’s milk bar for a comfort suckle even when the milk bar is dried up, particularly if they become terrified by surrounding events.

Why Do Dogs Pant?
When dogs pant, they regulate their body temperature. Dogs perspire through the pads on their feet. When they pant, most of their body heat is expelled through their mouth. Dogs also pant to cope with pain.

Why Do Dogs Dig?
Digging behavior is especially strong in terrier breeds. Natural dogs will dig to hide food or to unearth food like rodents. Dogs can dig in the cool earth to provide shelter from blazing heat.

Why Do Dogs Jump up?
When dogs jump, it may appear look like play behavior or an eager greeting. However, jumping may be a sign that your dog is attempting to declare its authority over you. You may be strengthening the behavior unknowingly by encouraging jumping up with affection.

Why Do Dogs Chew on Items?
Your dog may develop the tendency to chew on toys and other objects in order to get rid of the pain of a new set of teeth coming in. A full grown dog may take on their chewing behavior on your couch, cushions or favorite pair of shoes. They chew not because they enjoy the taste, but it could rather be a sign of separation anxiety or boredom. So, endeavor to get chewable toys for your dogs.

Separation anxiety
Animals live and travel in packs, so it’s natural for them to develop separation anxiety when they are separated from their pack-mates. If you intend to leave your dog alone, take him on a nice, long walk first. When your dog is in a resting mode, it can help still her anxiety.

Health / How To Know If You’re Allergic To Semen by jannydear(f): 7:12am On Jan 10, 2018
Sperm or semen allergy, also known as seminal plasma hypersensitivity, is a rare allergic reaction to proteins found in a man’s semen. Some women are affected by this condition.

Common symptoms of sperm allergy are itching, redness, pain, swelling and a burning sensation in the vaginal area.

READ ALSO: Watery Semen: What are the Possible Causes and Effect on Fertility?

Symptoms begin about 10-30 minutes after contact with semen. They may not be restricted to the vaginal area alone, they can occur in any area that has contact with semen, including the skin and the mouth. Symptoms of semen allergy can last for a few hours or a few days.

Some women may only feel symptoms around the vaginal area, while for others, the symptoms can affect their entire body. They may have inflammations, swelling, trouble breathing, or anaphylaxis.

A woman may discover she has sperm allergy at the first time she had sex. For other women, the condition may become obvious after she has had other sexual partners with no allergic reaction. Sperm allergy may occur with one partner but not another, it may also happen suddenly with a longtime partner.

Sperm allergy is often wrongly diagnosed as yeast infection, sexually-transmitted disease (STD) like herpes, or vaginitis (inflammation of the vagina). One indication for diagnosis is condom use. Sperm allergy occurs when a woman engages in unprotected sex with. The allergy may not be present with the use of condom.

For couples who are trying to conceive, sperm allergy can be exasperating since conception cannot occur with the use of condom. It can be a strain on most relationships. However, a woman can still achieve conception with sperm allergy. Sperm allergy does not affect her fertility and pregnancy can be achieved through artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization, after sperm is washed.

Women with sperm allergy should consult their gynecologist or an allergist. A test called Intradermal testing, can be used to confirm whether a woman is allergic to her partner’s sperm. The test involves the doctor injecting a small amount of the partner’s semen under the skin to check for an allergy.

Health / Stroke: Symptoms, Types, Causes And Prevention by jannydear(f): 4:11am On Jan 07, 2018
What Is a Stroke?

Stroke is an emergency condition that occurs when a blockage develops in the brain or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. When stroke occurs, cells in the brain begin to die quickly. If left without treatment, it can lead to permanent disability or death.

Symptoms of Stroke
Dizziness while walking
Sudden weakness of the body on one side
Sudden change in vision in one or both eyes
Difficulty speaking or understanding others
Difficulty swallowing
Sudden, severe, unexplained headache
Sudden confusion, difficulty speaking or understanding others

Stroke Test: Talk, Wave, Smile

The F.A.S.T. test helps spot symptoms of stroke. It stands for:

Face: This test is to check if one side of the victim’s face droops or sags when he/she smiles.

Arms: This helps to check if one side of the arm drifts downwards when raised.

Speech: This tests the person’s speech if his/her words is slurred or if they can repeat a simple sentence.

Time. Time is critical. Call 911 instantly for prompt medical attention if any symptoms are present.

Time is extremely critical, every second counts when seeking treatment for a stroke victim. When deprived of oxygen, the cells of the brain starts to die within minutes. There are clot-busting medicines that can regulate brain damage, but they need to be used within three hours or up to 4.5 hours of the initial stroke symptoms. The death of brain tissue means the body parts controlled by that area won’t function properly. This is why stroke is a top cause of lasting disability.

Causes of Stroke

Stroke is commonly caused by hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis). This occurs when plaque consisting of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances accumulate in the arteries, leaving little or no space for blood flow. A blood clot may lodge in this narrow space and cause an ischemic stroke. Atherosclerosis makes it easier for a clot to form.

Types of Stroke
Ischemic Stroke

This is the most common type of stroke, most stroke cases fall into this category. Ischemic stroke is caused by a blood clot that blocks a blood vessel inside the brain. The clot may develop on the spot or in some cases, travel through the blood to another place.

Hemorrhagic Stroke

This type of stroke occurs when a weakened blood vessel in the brain bursts. It causes bleeding inside the brain that can be difficult to stop. Hemorrhagic stroke are rare, but more deadly.

‘Mini-Stroke’ (TIA)

This is often described as a short-lived ischemic attack. Blood flow is temporarily reduced to part of the brain, causing stroke symptoms. When the blood flows again, the symptoms disappear. A TIA is a warning sign of an impending stroke. See your doctor immediately if you think you’ve had a TIA.

READ ALSO: Sudden Cardiac Arrest: Symptoms, Causes, Risk factors, and Treatment

Diagnosing a Stroke

To diagnose stroke, the first step is to determine which type of stroke is affecting the patient. There are two main types and they are not treated the same way. A CT scan is performed to help doctors establish whether the symptoms are coming from a blocked blood vessel or a bleeding vessel. Other tests may be conducted to determine the location of a blood clot or bleeding within the brain.

Risk Factors of Stroke

Chronic Conditions
Your risk of developing a stroke can be increased by certain conditions. These include:

Obesity
High blood pressure
Diabetes
High cholesterol

Taking steps to control these conditions may reduce your risk.

Behaviors
Certain behaviors also increase the risk of stroke, such as:

Excessive use of alcohol
Smoking
Getting too little exercise

Diet
A poor diet may increase the risk for stroke. A diet high in fish, fruits, vegetables and whole grains may help lower stroke risk.

Uncontrolled Risk Factors

Some risk factors of stroke are uncontrollable. They include:

Age: Older people are more susceptible to stroke
Gender: Men are more prone to developing a stroke. Though stroke deaths occur in women too.
Race: African-Americans, Native Americans, and Alaskan Natives are at higher risk compared to people of other origins.
Family history of stroke

Emergency Treatment

For an ischemic stroke, emergency treatment centers on medication that would cause blood flow to be restored. A clot-busting drug is effective at dissolving clots and reducing long-term damage, but it must be as soon as possible, within three or much as 4.5 hours.

For Hemorrhagic strokes, treatment usually involves controlling high blood pressure, bleeding, and brain swelling.

Long-Term Damage Caused by Stroke

The extent of damage caused by stroke depends on its severity and how quickly treatment was administered to stabilize the brain. The type of damage depends on the part of the brain where stroke occurs. Common problems after a stroke include numbness and/or weakness in the arms or legs, vision problems, difficulty walking, trouble swallowing, and problems with speech and comprehension. These problems can be permanent, but many people regain most of their abilities.

Stroke Rehab
Rehabilitation helps patients regain lost skills and learn to compensate for irreversible injury. The aim of rehab is to help restore as much independence as possible.

Speech Therapy
Speech and language therapy is equally essential for people who have trouble speaking. A speech therapist can also help patients who have difficulty swallowing.

Physical Therapy
After a stroke, it is common for patients to develop muscle weakness and balance problems. This can obstruct walking and delay other daily activities. Physical therapy is an active way to recover strength, balance, and coordination.

Talk Therapy
It’s common for stroke survivors and their loved ones to experience extreme emotions, such as grief, fear, and anger. A psychologist can provide tactics for managing these emotions. A therapist can also watch for signs of depression, which often affects people recuperating from a stroke.

Stroke Prevention
Lifestyle

People who have had a stroke or TIA can take steps to prevent a recurrence by adjusting their lifestyle:

Minimize alcohol and salt intake
Quit smoking
Exercise and maintain a healthy weight
Eat a healthier diet with more fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains
Medications

Medications to lower risk of stroke for people with a high risk is often recommended by doctors. Anti-platelet drugs, including aspirin, are administered to keep platelets in the blood from sticking together and forming clots. Anti-clotting drugs, such as warfarin, may be required to ward off stroke in some patients. For those with hypertension, drugs will be given to lower their blood pressure.

Surgery

A stroke which results from a narrowed carotid artery (the blood vessels that travel up each side of the neck to bring blood to the brain), may benefit from surgery called carotid endarterectomy. This procedure removes plaque from the lining of the carotid arteries and can help prevent additional strokes.

Stroke Prevention: Balloon and Stent

Doctors can treat a blocked carotid artery without major surgery using a procedure called angioplasty. This involves implanting a catheter into the artery briefly and inflating a tiny balloon to broaden the area that is contracted by plaque. A metal tube called a stent, can be place in and left in place to keep the artery open.

Health / Top 5 Curable Cancers by jannydear(f): 3:29am On Jan 06, 2018
Formerly when it comes to cancer cure, there are no absolute guarantees, but that was in the past. Now doctors have greater success finding and treating some types of the disease than others.
Generally, some experts believe that a person who stays cancer about free 5 years after a diagnosis has better chances of full recovery.
The five cancers that can be cured includes:

1. Thyroid Cancer

For people with thyroid cancer, about 98% of them live five years and above after diagnosis depending on tissue type. The thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck, produces hormones your body needs to burn calories, control your heartbeat, and perform other functions. Papillary is the most common type of thyroid cancer, and it grows very slowly. Even when tumors starts to spread into other nearby tissues, doctors can treat and even cure this disease by performing surgery to remove the gland. After surgery, people take medicine to replace the hormones the thyroid produces.
Doctors also are now finding thyroid cancers earlier than ever before, which makes them easier to get rid of.
A type of the disease called anaplastic thyroid cancer has a 5-year survival rate of only 7%, but it's very uncommon.
There are no suggested screening tests for thyroid cancer. Most people only discover find they have a tumor when they or a doctor feel lumps in their neck. Sometimes the problem is detected when doctor carries out an ultrasound for another reason. Talk to your doctor if you feel a lump in your neck or if you have any symptoms such as breathing or swallowing problems.

2. Prostate Cancer

Many prostate tumors grow slowly or not at all and there is 99% survival rate, five years after diagnosis. In fact, many men with these types of tumors can live for years without problems.
A cure becomes less likely when prostate cancer spreads, a condition called metastatic cancer which is harder to treat. A small percentage of prostate cancers can quickly spread to distant parts of the body. When that happens, only about 29% of men live 5 years after they're diagnosed. The good news is that doctors mostly catch most prostate cancers early before they spread.
There are two ways to check for prostate cancer:
One is the digital rectal exam that involves your doctor checking inside your bottom with a gloved finger.
The second is a blood test called the PSA test, which measures levels of a protein which is often higher in men with prostate cancer. Levels of PSA can increase for reasons other than prostate cancer, so some medical groups say men who have a normal risk for the disease shouldn't get the test. Discuss with your doctor about whether you need testing and alert your doctor if you notice any problems like trouble peeing or blood in your urine.

3. Breast Cancer -- Early Stage

Most women with breast cancer still live five years and above after diagnosis and stages of 0 and 1 - 99% to 100%. Modern medicine has greatly helped in combating breast cancer especially in its early stage.
A cure is less likely if breast cancer isn’t detected early and starts to spread. Regular mammograms can help you live longer. Medical groups have different procedures on when you should get them. For people with risk of breast cancer, some groups recommend screening tests every other year starting at age 50. The American Cancer Society recommends women starting at age 45 get yearly mammograms and those ages 40 – 44 should have the choice to begin yearly mammograms if they would like.

4. Testicular Cancer

Survival rate of testicular cancer shows that 95.1% of people are alive, five years after diagnosis, if cancer is detected early before the tumor starts to spread to other body parts. Testicular cancer can be cured by performing surgery to remove one or both testicles that have a tumor. If a man has only one testicle removed (which is the norm), the other will usually make enough hormones for him to still have kids. For cancers that have spread far, surgery and radiation or chemotherapy can be used for treatment. Stem cell transplant is sometimes performed. Doctors credit the chemo drug cisplatin, introduced in the 1970s, with major boosts in survival rates in its advanced stage.
There are treatments that work well even for advanced stage of testicular cancer. The 5-year survival rate for this type of tumor is 73%, which still quite high for a cancer in the late stages.
There are no screening tests for testicular cancer. Men should consult their doctor immediately if they feel a lump in a testicle, or if one becomes larger than the other.

5. Melanoma

About 97.1% of people with Melanoma still live five years after diagnosis. Melanoma skin cancer can usually be spotted in its early stages if it hasn’t spread beyond the skin surface. Doctors can cure it with surgery.
A cure is less likely if melanoma isn’t detected early before it spreads to other parts of the body. It is usually difficult to treat once it goes beyond the skin's surface. Only 15%-20% of people who find melanomas after they've spread to other body parts will still be alive 5 years after their diagnosis.
You can check your skin for large, dark, unusually shaped, or raised blotches. It is vital to check your back and your scalp, scrotum, and in between your toes for any anomaly. Go for regular screening. It's harder to see melanomas in these places. Consult your doctor immediately if you notice any of these changes.

Health / Benefits Of Aerobic Exercise by jannydear(f): 4:20am On Jan 02, 2018
What is aerobic exercise?
Aerobic exercise also known as “cardio” in gym language, is any exercise that you can sustain for more than just a few minutes while your heart, lungs and muscles work overtime.

The average healthy adult breathes in and out about 7 to 8 liters of air every minute. Once you fill your lungs, the oxygen in the air (air contains approximately 20% oxygen) is filtered through small branches of tubes bronchioles until it reaches the alveoli. The alveoli are tiny sacs where oxygen diffuses into the blood.

READ ALSO: 10 Exercises To Build A Bigger and Better Butt

The heart has four chambers that fill with blood and pump blood (two atria and two ventricles) and some very active coronary arteries. Because of all this feat, the heart needs a fresh supply of oxygen, which the lungs provide. Once the heart uses what it needs, it pumps the blood, the oxygen, and other nutrients out through the large left ventricle and via the circulatory system to all the organs, muscles, and tissues that are in need of it.

Your heart is a muscle too and also gets bigger when you train it. Your heart beats about 60-80 times per minute at rest, 100,000 times daily, more than 30 million times yearly. Every beat of your heart sends a volume of blood along with oxygen and many other life-sustaining nutrients, coursing through your body. The average healthy adult heart pumps about 5 liters of blood per minute.

Fitness benefits of aerobic exercise
Here’s what happens inside your body when you do aerobic exercise frequently:

Your heart gets stronger and pumps more blood with each beat. Top athletes can have stroke volumes more than twice as high as average individuals. Conditioned hearts also have greater diameter and mass, and they pump powerfully enough to allow for greater filling time, which is a good thing because it means that more blood fills the chambers of the heart before they pump so that more blood gets pumped with each beat.
Greater volume means the heart doesn’t have to pump as fast to meet the demands of exercise. Fewer beats and more stroke volume mean greater efficiency. High stroke volume is the main reason why athletes’ hearts don’t pump as fast during exercise and why they have such low resting heart rates; sometimes as low as 40 beats per minute, whereas the average is 60-80 beats per minutes.
Your muscles get more efficient at consuming oxygen when you do regular aerobic exercise. This happens because of an increase in the activity and number of enzymes that transport oxygen out of the bloodstream and into the muscle.
Mitochondria, which are the powerhouses of your cells inside the muscle increase in number and activity. They do all the heavy-duty work to keep you moving. They use the oxygen to burn the fat and carbohydrate that energizes you. The good news is that they increase in number and activity, by as much as 50%, in just a matter of days to weeks in response to regular aerobic exercise.
Difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercise
Aerobic exercise any activity that stimulates your heart rate and breathing to increase but not so much that you can’t sustain the activity for more than a few minutes. Aerobic means “with oxygen,” and anaerobic means “without oxygen.” Anaerobic exercise is the type where you get out of breath in just a few moments. Examples are climbing a long flight of stairs, lifting weights for strength improvement and sprinting.

A caveat
Activities are all examples of types of aerobic or cardio activities include swimming, dancing, biking, water aerobics, walking, hiking, kick-boxing, climbing steps (two at a time for a more vigorous workout), low-impact dance classes, all the cardio machines at the gum (treadmill, elliptical, bike, rower, x-c skiing, stair-climber), and many others. These exercises can be anaerobic too if they are performed at a high intensity.

Health benefits of aerobic exercise
Perhaps no area of exercise science has been more studied than the benefits of aerobic exercise. There is a mountain of evidence to prove that regular aerobic exercise will improve your health, fitness, and much more. Here are some health benefits of aerobic exercise.

Cancer prevention
Colon cancer: Studies have proven that physically active men and women have about a 30%-40% reduction in the risk of developing colon cancer compared with sedentary individuals. It appears that 30-60 minutes per day of moderate-high intensity physical activity is needed to decrease the risk of colon cancer.
Breast cancer: Physically active women have a greater decrease in risk of breast cancer compared with inactive women, according to researchers. About 75 to 150 minutes per day of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity is needed to decrease the risk of breast cancer.
Prostate cancer: Research is varying regarding whether physical activity plays any role in the prevention of prostate cancer.
Lung cancer: There are relatively few studies on aerobic exercises as related to lung cancer prevention. The available data suggest that physically active individuals have a lower risk of lung cancer.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis a disease characterized by low bone intensity which increases risk of fracture. Exercise may increase bone density or slow down the rate of decrease in both men and women. Active children also have greater bone density than sedentary kids and that this may help prevent fractures.

Depression
Regular exercise can help to elevate our mood, thereby eliminating depression. Research has shown that three to five days of per week for 12 weeks of biking or treadmill for roughly 30 minutes per workout reduced scores on a depression questionnaire by 47%.

Cardiovascular disease
A lot of studies have shown that aerobic exercise prevents or reduces the occurrence of cardiovascular disease. In a study of more than 13,000 men and women, it was discovered that the unhealthy individuals had much higher rates of cardiovascular disease than fit individuals, the risk was twice as high in some cases. Aerobic exercise works in many ways to prevent heart disease by reducing blood pressure and allowing blood vessels to become less stiff and it’s less likely for fat to accumulate and clog up the vessels.

Obesity and weight control
Aerobic exercise is believed by many studies to be the single best predictor of weight maintenance. You can lose weight without exercise by reducing your caloric intake enough so that you burn more calories than you consume, however, it takes a regular dose of exercise to keep your weight off. The American College of Sports Medicine endorses that overweight and obese individuals gradually increase to a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity per week, but for long-term weight loss, overweight and obese adults should ultimately progress to 200 to 300 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity.

Romance / How To Reject A Guy Nicely Without Hurting Him by jannydear(f): 7:37am On Dec 30, 2017
You may have just come out of a stormy relationship and you need to get your life back on track at the interim before delving into another relationship. However, there may be this new guy you met at a social gathering and got friendly with without any strings attached. It doesn’t matter what the circumstances are, but there’s a good chance that you may have come across a guy that wants to go out with you.

READ ALSO: 6 Ways to Leave an Abusive Relationship

If you don’t like him or just not ready for another relationship at the moment but he is persistent, here’s a few tips on how to politely tell him no without hurting his feelings.
Some guys may be understanding enough to calmly back away when you tell them you aren’t interested. But some guys may feel you are simply playing the hard-to-get card, and may need a firmer response from you to get the message across.

1. Be simple and truthful

If a guy that you’re not interested in asks you out, don’t hesitate or meander, that may send a wrong signal to him. Tell him straight up that you aren’t interested in being in any relationship. You really don’t have to be rude.

2. Tell him you’ll rather be a friend than lover

If you want to reject a guy, but not sure you want to lose him completely acquaintance, tell him you don’t want to go out with him right now, but would love to be friends instead. This is approach is best used when you’re not sure yourself. Take a bit of time to figure it out, you can always change your mind depending on the outcome of your friendship with him.

3. Make it clear and firm

You can chose to be firm if the guy you rejected and don’t even want as a friend, asks you to go out with him again. You’ve already been gentle the first time. So this time, tell him firmly that there’s no way you could want to have a serious relationship with. Most guys have an irritating pattern of wanting to know the reason behind why you’re rejecting them. They want you to explain it in details. The truth is, you don’t even owe any man logical explanation on why you are rejecting them. That is a bit absurd! So instead of getting yourself in a bind, just make your rejection clear and don’t go into intricate details. You never can tell what he may use as a weapon against you later if you reveal all to him.

4. Tell him you’ll dislike him

When he obstinately tries to get you to date him even after all you’ve done to tell him off, tell him that his persistent behavior is beginning to aggravate you. Make him that you’ve started detesting him, and the more he asks you out, you’ll only end up disliking him. Most guys are afraid of this one and may back off immediately.

5. Pretend to be saddened by his proposal

If a guy is rather persistent, but he is quite kind and nice, have a talk with him. Tell him that you’re getting flustered by his persistence. Tell him you’re having a difficult time getting through the day because of his ceaseless proposals. There’s a chance that a nice guy will back away when you show him your sensitive side.

6. Avoid the guy

If all of the earlier approach proved abortive, then you may need to take a firmer approach. Now some guys may be nice, but their persistence can be really exasperating. Avoid the guy, and make it apparent that you’re avoiding him.

7. Don’t speak to him alone

Guys are thrilled when the girl they like has a conversation with them alone. They find it pleasurable and it shows superior treatment over other guys. Avoid giving away any signs that could be misinterpreted as an invitation. Avoid the man and any situation that will cause you to speak alone with him.

8. Cut him off from your social circle

Tell him that you’re going to take him off your friends’ lists in social networking sites if he doesn’t stop bothering you. Make it known to him that you’re going to avoid him if you meet him and won’t pick his calls anymore. He may let you be.

9. Ignore him

This is the final frontier that will always work. If all the points above proves abortive, then this should be your last resort. Unfriend him on Facebook and other social networking sites, ignore him completely. Walk past him, and don’t even bother wave or even look at him.
However, avoid being completely rude if he confronts you, this may only make him pursue you more and may even cause him to become violent. Speak to him like he’s a five year old. Make him understand that both of you can be friends only if he promises to see you as a friend. If he still insists, tell him you’re sorry, but you really can’t talk anymore and walk away.

Health / Too Much Video Gaming To Be Labeled A Disorder by jannydear(f): 6:16am On Dec 30, 2017
Video gaming excessively may soon be labeled a mental health condition, according to World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO will officially add gaming disorder to its list of psychological illnesses in 2018 such that people who play video games excessively may be diagnosed with the disorder.

According to U.S. News and World Report, health care workers and doctors will be able to diagnose someone with gaming disorder.

A professor at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, Daphne Bavelier, explained to Forbes magazine that not all who enjoy video games may have gaming disorder, adding that it depends on the game, how long and often you play it.

WHO explains that gaming only becomes an issue when it causes “impairment in personal, family, educational, occupational, social or other important aspects of life.

The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) defined internet gaming disorder in 2013 as a “condition for further study.” This doesn’t classify it as an official disorder, rather one the American Psychiatric Association says needs more analysis.

Young males between the ages of 12 and 20 were mostly affected by the gaming condition, according to the DSM-5.

Family / Things To Consider Before Dating An Older Partner by jannydear(f): 1:01pm On Dec 27, 2017
Researchers have studied the age gap difference in relationships and have found that, there’s no conclusive answer that applies to all couples. If you are attracted to someone older or your than you and wondering if a relationship will work out, the truth is, there are many factors that could help your relationship overcome an age difference or even benefit from it. Let’s look at the following guideline questions that can offer direction in the best choice to make:
How well do you connect?
You may likely feel the cultural dissimilarities that exist between generations if the age difference between couples is wide. The movies, music, and popular cultural bearings may vary, weakening your connection. However, if you have a strong foundation based on other factors, the age difference might essentially rouse more interest and engagement with each other.

Do you assume particular roles based on the age difference?
It’s vital to be cognizant of any prejudices you have about each other based on your differences in age. That a partner is older doesn’t mean they would be wiser and also, a younger partner on the contrary might not be overly open to adventure. Or, if you do fit each other’s expectations based on age, are you open to the changes that might come with time? As time passes, the younger partner might not want a mentor and the older partner might grow bored of not being challenged.
Do your life goals match up?
Both partners may have the same mindset now, but your future stages of life might not match up. Some goals, such as the desire to travel or have kids, might contrast based on age difference. So, it can help to know your current and future goals.
Are you willing to adapt to the physical changes that comes with aging?
Aging does not only affect the physical outlook, but also affects your partner emotionally. This might leave a much younger partner handling age-related issues such as less physical stamina or more physical health problems – long before they need to face those concerns for themselves.
Should you pursue the relationship or move on?
The best decision of how to cope with an huge age difference in a relationship is a very personal one. Remember that the difference in your ages as just one aspect to be considered in your relationship. So weigh it along with all the other aspects of your relationship, and then pick what’s best for you.

Pets / Reason Why Your Dog Isn’t Eating, Possible Causes And Appetite Solutions by jannydear(f): 11:49pm On Dec 26, 2017
It can be quite disturbing when your dog won’t eat, be it a dog u’ve had for years or a newly adopted pooch.

There are a lot of reasons for loss of appetite in dogs. To design the best treatment plan, it’s imperative to determine the cause.

If you’re troubled because your dog isn’t eating as much as the stated guidelines on the food you bought, remember that these are only averages. Many perfectly healthy dogs eat only 60% to 70% of the amount stated on the packaging.

Complete loss of appetite in dogs is called anorexia. This is different from the eating disorder in humans called anorexia nervosa.

When a dog refuses to eat, it can indicate illness, so it is important to quickly seek veterinary care.

Reasons your dog won’t eat

Just like in people, there are a variety of reasons dogs might refuse to eat. These include:

Dental disease: Your dog may find it difficult to eat because of a disturbance, causing extreme pain in their mouth. Have him checked for a broken or loose tooth, severe gingivitis and even an oral tumor.
Illness: Lack of appetite in dogs is often a sign of sickness like cancer, infections, liver problems, kidney failure and general pains. It becomes disturbing if your dog is exhibiting other symptoms at the same time. Prompt vet care is advised.
Travel and unfamiliar surroundings. If your dog was eating well, and suddenly stops when you embark on a trip with him or moved to a new location, it may be that your dog won’t eat because of traveling or the unfamiliar surroundings. Some animals may get motion sickness, and others become nervous or uncomfortable in new places.
Pickiness: Some dogs are just picky, or their refusal to eat may be caused by feeding them in situations where they are uncomfortable, such as around an hostile dog or from a bowl at an uncomfortable height.
Recent vaccination. Your dog may experience temporary loss of appetite after receiving a vaccine injection. Vaccinations are available for many serious and contagious dog diseases. Although these injections have saved the lives of millions of pets in the past 100 years, they do sometimes have adverse effects.
What to do when your dog won’t eat
If your dog won’t eat because of an illness, the vet may recommend a prescription diet to meet your canine’s nutritional needs while the underlying disease is being treated.

Sometimes these diets are not tasty, especially if your dog is used to regular treats or people food. If your dog is already ill, never starve your pet in a bid to force it to eat the prescribed diet. Instead, talk with your veterinarian about alternatives. In more severe cases, your vet may prescribe appetite-stimulating medications, recommend syringe-feeding a liquid diet, or insert a feeding tube.

If your dog’s refusal to eat is connected to a behavior problem caused by pickiness, rather than the result of a medical condition, there are a number of things you can do to encourage your pet to eat:

Taking your dog for a walk before mealtime.
Feeding your pet on a regular schedule, at least twice a day.
Trying a different kind of food, such as canned food if you normally feed your dog dry food.
Making mealtime a fun time for your pet, such as by playing with a toy that dispenses food or rewarding your dog with food for doing a trick.
Cutting back on treats.
Changing your dog’s feeding situation. If you normally feed your pet with other animals, try feeding him alone. Or try using different bowls or plates at different heights to see what your dog prefers. (You might even put a few pieces of food on the floor next to the feeding dish.)

Romance / Should You Remain Friends With Your Ex? by jannydear(f): 3:14pm On Dec 24, 2017
Most people still chose to still remain casual friends with their ex after a breakup, but is this sensible? Should you quit being friends with your ex considering the fact that you are no longer a couple? Let’s consider the following points to help you address the issue.

You should be certain of what you want
So what do you really want? You have to be honest with yourself about what you are truly thinking and feeling toward your ex in their presence or absence. With an ex, it means the romance has gone out of your relationship, but the bond of friendship between two of you is still strong. It is foolish to act like you want to simply be friends with your ex, when what you actually want is an opportunity to win back their love.

READ ALSO: 7 Signs Your Partner Is Still In Love with Their Ex

This can be quite thorny, especially if your partner has moved on with another person. If you are still emotionally attached to your ex when in reality, they have moved on, then it is best to accept the losses and move on with your life without still remaining friends, since being friends can upset you emotionally. However, you can still decide to remain friends if you feel very comfortable with them and their new relationship.

Your interaction with them matters
If your breakup was on a good and harmonious note, then it would be easy to make a smooth transition to friendship, devoid of any sentiments or emotions. However, if your relationship was laden with fighting, bitter acrimony and nasty separation, it would be best to avoid any form of friendship after your split and just maintain your distance.

How your interactions leave you feeling about yourself
If you and your ex still care for each other and express this in ways that leave you feeling good about yourself, then you may probably have a solid friendship going on. On the other hand, if exposure to your ex leaves you doubting yourself, then you might want to rethink the wisdom of trying to maintain a friendship.

How long do you need to distance yourself
It may be that you simply need time to recover from the breakup and can reconnect when you are feeling much better. If you are considering approaching your ex, avoid giving yourself a time limit. As an alternative, monitor yourself and contemplate what will work well for you each step along the way.

How much distance do you need
If even seeing your ex in person causes you great distress, then it may be best to do what you can to limit such contact. You might also want to limit your contact on social media, if seeing your ex on any platform stirs up emotions. If you need to be on social media often without wanting to see them, it may be wise to unfriend them.is also triggering, you might want to limit your contact here, too. You should note that your individual choices to remain friends is a personal one, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it should last forever.

Bottom Line
If you still want to remain friends with your ex, you may need to first take time to be apart or separated from each other, and get used to not being around them. This is imperative, so you wouldn’t get into a fit of jealousy if you eventually see them with someone new. Both of you would need to agree on remaining just friends after your breakup. If your ex isn’t comfortable with this idea, then you also need to let it go.

Foreign Affairs / Trump Drinks Glass Of Water With Two Hands, Sparking Fresh Dimentia Concerns by jannydear(f): 7:52am On Dec 20, 2017
U.S. President, Donald Trump has sparked dementia concerns after he was captured drinking a small glass of water with two hands like a small child while debuting his new national security strategy in front of military service members in Washington, D.C.
This recent action comes days after he slurred his words during Jerusalem speech and prompted Twitter users to wonder if he has a health problem. Some raised concerns that the movement could be evidence of a serious degenerative disorder, such as dementia, which can cause shaky hands.
Charlene Eliz. Jones wrote that Trump "holds that water glass like my 3-year-old grandson holds his cup! I really think Trump has dementia and is reverting 2 childhood action."
Joseph Fedorko added: "THE WAY HE IS GRABBING THAT GLASS SHOWS TRUMP HAS DEMENTIA. HIS MOTOR SKILLS ARE DEGENERATING."
Recall that in November, he picked up a bottle of Fiji water with both hands and sipped it awkwardly during a press conference at the White House. And earlier this month, speculation went wild after Trump began slurring through part of his speech announcing changes to America's Israel policy.
He finished his remarks by saying: "God bless the United Shhtates. Thank you very much-sh."
Commenting on Trump's behavior, TV host Joe Scarborough said, "People close to him during the campaign told me Trump had early stages of dementia".
A White House spokesman maintained that the president just had a case of "dry mouth," telling the Los Angeles Times that "his throat was dry. There's nothing to it."
Asked if Trump had any related health concerns, Shah said: "I know what you're getting at. I'm saying there's nothing to it."
But brain doctor Dr Ford Vox - who has never examined Trump - believes the incident and other moments in his presidency, reveals that Trump has all the symptoms of pre-dementia.

Health / Surprising Things Most People Don’t Know About HIV And AIDS by jannydear(f): 6:36am On Dec 18, 2017
Since the emergence of HIV and AIDS, there has been no known cure for the dreaded disease, however, research is coming closer to finding a permanent cure.

AIDS in the 21st century is nothing like it was in the decade that preceded it, where approximately 1.1 million people were infected.

6 Things Most People Don’t Know About HIV And AIDS

These are six things most people still don't know about HIV/AIDS.

1. If You’re recently been exposed to HIV, you may still be able to prevent it with emergency treatment
There is an antiretroviral treatment cocktail that, if ingested and continued to be taken within the first 72 hours of exposure to the virus, one can significantly reduce the risk of getting HIV.

Dr. Carlos Malvestutto, MD, MPH, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Division of Infectious Diseases, explained that this type of medical HIV prevention is called post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and to be fully effective, it must be taken for 28 days. It is more effective if treatment is started early.

READ ALSO: What is the Difference between HIV and AIDS?

2. HIV patients are at high risk of a myriad of diseases
According to a 2014 study published in the journal Nature Reviews Cardiology, individuals living with HIV have almost twice the risk of heart attacks and strokes compared to people who do not have the disease. This is as a result of a combination of factors, including chronic inflammation and immune activation. There is active ongoing investigation weighing interventions to reduce chronic inflammation and immune activation in those living with HIV.

Dr. Malvestutto noted that researchers do not yet have a specific treatment to do this beyond the effect of controlling the virus with antiretroviral treatment. “It is, however, possible to control established cardiovascular risk factors such as smoking, blood pressure, cholesterol, and obesity, so it is important that individuals who are HIV+ talk with their primary care providers to develop a plan to reduce cardiovascular risk, “the doctor stated.

READ ALSO: How to Identify Penis Rash Caused by HIV

According to Dr. Malvestutto;

“There is also a lot of data showing that HIV increases the risk of not only AIDS-associated malignancies such as Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Kaposi sarcoma, and cervical cancer but also other types of malignancies including lung cancer. So age-appropriate cancer screening—such as for these hard-to-catch-early cancers are very important.”

3. Resistance is becoming problematic even though AIDS medications function effectively
Doctor Josh Bloom, Ph.D., director of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences for the American Council on Science and Health noted that all viruses will become resistant to an antiviral drug as time goes by. The authentic definition of an antiviral drug is one that causes drug-resistant mutations in the virus. Dr. Bloom said resistance can be slowed intensely by using combinations of drugs that attack the virus by different mechanisms.

READ ALSO: Early Signs of HIV in Men

It is this approach that he contributes to being the cornerstone of effective AIDS therapies. “The only way to stay ahead of resistance is to keep inventing new drugs to replace the older ones once they are no longer effective.”

4. The population of people living with HIV is advancing in age
The overall population of persons living with the condition is aging, as people living with HIV are living longer, courtesy of effective antiretroviral treatment. According to statistics from CDC, in 2014, an estimated 45 percent of Americans living with diagnosed HIV were aged 50 and older, 27 percent were aged 55 and older and 6 percent were aged 65 and older.

In a few years, more than half of all people living with HIV will be above 50 years. “Older people in the United States are more likely to have more advanced HIV infection at the time of diagnosis than younger people,” says Carlos Malvestutto.

READ ALSO: Stem Cell Transplant Could Destroy HIV, Study Finds

“Also, older people may not consider themselves to be at risk of HIV infection or may mistake HIV symptoms for those of normal aging, Dr Malvestutto added.”

Most older people are sexually active, and may lack knowledge about HIV prevention. This calls for the importance of making HIV testing generally available to all irrespective of their age and the need for primary care providers to have an open discussion with their older patients about risky sexual practices.

5. Most people affected with HIV do not know their status
Dr. Malvestutto noted that HIV testing has become very sensitive, and rapid tests, which provide results in about 40 minutes, can detect HIV infection that was acquired very recently, still, too many people who have HIV do not become aware of their status until the disease is advanced. This is why he says it is so important to promote and normalize HIV testing for everyone—so that all patients can be diagnosed and started on HIV treatment quickly.

6. There is medication available to prevent HIV acquisition for high-risk individuals
A preventive vaccine for HIV is not yet available worldwide, there is however a medication that can be taken orally every day to prevent HIV infection among individuals who are at high risk of acquiring HIV. The currently approved medication is a pill that combines two drugs (tenofovir and emtricitabine) and is more than 94 percent effective at preventing the acquisition of HIV in uninfected people who are at high risk of HIV infection,” says Dr. Malvestutto.

This type of prevention is called pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP. “In the U.S., it was approved by FDA in 2012 and awareness of and access to PrEP is increasing around the world. Dr. Malvestutto predicts that in the nearest future, there will be multiple forms of PrEP that will not require taking a pill daily but may include monthly vaginal rings, subcutaneous implants that release the drug slowly, and long-acting injectables administered every eight weeks.

Pets / List Of Foods Your Dog Should Never Eat by jannydear(f): 3:21pm On Dec 16, 2017
Dangerous Foods for Dogs
The foods you give your four-legged friend can be dangerous depending on what it contains. There’s a lot of human food your dog should never eat. Some of these common foods may surprise you.

Avocado
Avocados contain substance something called persin. It’s ok for people who aren’t allergic to it. However, too much might be harmful to dogs. If you grow avocados at home, keep your dog away from the plants. Persin is found in the seed, leaves, and bark, as well as the fruit.

Onions and Garlic

Onions and garlic can kill the red blood cells of your dog, thereby causing anemia. The powdered, cooked raw or dehydrated form of onions and garlic should be kept far away from dogs. Eating the onion powder a lot just once or can cause poisoning. Look for signs like weakness, vomiting, and breathing problems.
Alcohol
Alcohol has the same effect on a dog’s liver and brain that it has on human. But unlike in people, it takes a little quantity to harm your dog. Just a little beer, liquor, wine, or food that contains alcohol can be lethal. It can cause diarrhea, vomiting, coordination problems, coma, breathing problems and even death. The size of your dog matters too because the smaller your dog, the worse it can be.
Coffee, Tea, and Other Caffeine
If you want your dog to be lively, give him toys and not caffeine. Caffeine can be fatal. Watch out for coffee and tea, even the beans and the grounds. Avoid giving your dog chocolate, cocoa, colas and energy drinks. Caffeine is also in some cold medicines and pain killers. Signs to watch out for if your dog had caffeine are fast breathing, restlessness and muscle twitches.

Grapes and Raisins
Grapes and raisins are dangerous for your dog to eat because they can cause kidney failure. Just a little quantity can make a dog sick. Vomiting over and over is an early sign. Your dog will get sluggish and depressed within a day after eating grapes and raisins.

Chocolate
The most unsafe types of chocolate to give your dog are dark chocolate and unsweetened baking chocolate. Chocolate can cause a dog to have heart problems, tremors, seizures including vomiting, diarrhea and even death.

Note: Even white chocolate is still not good for your dog.
Fat Trimmings and Bones
Dogs can develop pancreatitis if they eat fat trimmed from meat – both cooked and uncooked. Though it seems natural to give dogs bone, they can choke on it. Bones can also splinter and block or cause cuts in your dog’s digestive system.

Raw Eggs
There’s the chance of food poisoning from bacteria like salmonella or E. coli if you feed your dog raw diet that includes uncooked eggs.

Salt
Feeding your dog with too much salty foods like chips or pretzels can lead to lead to sodium ion poisoning. Symptoms of too much salt include tremors, depression, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, high temperature and even death.

Sugary Foods and Drinks
Too much sugar can do the same thing to dogs that it does to human. It can make your dog overweight and cause health issues with her teeth. It can even lead to diabetes.

Your Medicine
Giving your dog medications meant for you can make them very ill. Keep all medicines out of your dog’s reach. And, never give your dog any over-the-counter medicine unless it is recommended by your vet. Ingredients such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be deadly for your dog, and they are common in pain relievers and cold medicine.

Milk and Other Dairy Products
You may be tempted to share your ice cream with your dog on a hot day. Instead of ice cream, give her an ice cube. Milk-based products can cause diarrhea and other digestive problems

Health / Top 8 Tips for Stopping Armpit Sweat by jannydear(f): 2:11pm On Dec 16, 2017
It is normal to sweat, it is a natural process that helps control the internal temperature of the body, especially during exercise or hot weather. Excess heat is being removed from your body as sweat evaporates from the surface of your skin, thereby cooling the body.

Sweating is sometimes complicated by medical conditions that cause excessive sweating which can be driven by emotion or special circumstances. For instance, situational sweating can occur if you are faced with a challenging situation such as meeting your future in-laws, making a formal presentation before a group or your first day at work to meet your new co-workers.

There are more than 2 million sweat glands located in the human body. The apocrine glands, which are efficient sweat-producers, are located in the armpits, which is why sweat seem to primarily occur underneath the arms. These glands produce sweat which contains fatty acids and proteins, making the sweat thicker with a milky or yellowish color. That’s why underarm stains on clothing have a yellow tint.

Although sweat itself is odorless, when bacteria on the skin and hair metabolize the proteins and fatty acids in sweat, they produce an unpleasant odor. It is essential to prevent and control armpit sweat for good hygiene, social life, and comfort.

Top 8 Tips for Stopping Armpit Sweat

There are several ways to stop or reduce armpit sweat and the wetness and odor that accompanies it.

1. Use an Antiperspirant

Always use an antiperspirant. Applying an antiperspirant or deodorant before leaving the house is important to help control underarm sweat and disturbing odor.

READ ALSO: Can Deodorant And Antiperspirant Cause Breast Cancer?

Antiperspirants contain ingredients designed to halt sweat while deodorants help to get rid of unpleasant odors. There are assorted types of antiperspirants and deodorants available on the market.

2. Adjust Your Routine

Antiperspirants causes skin irritation for most people, especially those that contain higher levels of aluminum chloride as an active ingredient. To help ward off the itching and stinging sensations that some antiperspirants cause, you may need to observe a few precautions. Avoid applying these products to your underarms within one to two days of shaving them, and don’t take a hot shower that opens the skin’s pores right before applying antiperspirant.

The most effective antiperspirant won’t help if your skin is covered with fabric that traps heat and moisture all day. Find out which fabrics keep your skin cool.

3. Wear Breathable Fabrics

The fabric you choose to wear can either make you more at ease or more susceptible to sweat. Instead of synthetic fabrics, go for breathable fabrics that allows air to gain access to your skin. Such fabrics includes wool, silk, hemp, linen, and cotton. These fabrics will prevent you from sweating profusely because they have a loser weave compared to synthetics.

Synthetic fabrics, such as polyester, nylon, and rayon, are made with much tighter weaves that tend to trap heat and make your body more prone to sweat. Also, with synthetic fabrics, the accumulated moisture doesn’t evaporate as easily.

4. Know Your Anxiety Triggers

There are a lot of circumstances that cause anxiety such as Interviewing for a new job, speaking in public, going on a first date, in a social gathering, or while previewing a power point presentation with colleagues. Nervousness or anxiety causes your heart to pound, your mouth becomes dry and you start to sweat. This is a fear response triggered by your body to get you physically ready to respond to an uncertain or possibly dangerous situation.

Instead of getting nervous, reflect a few new strategies that can help combat anxiety. Learn to check and control your anxiety triggers and try to mentally accept that some circumstances are out of your control. Brace your body and mind by getting at least eight hours of sleep a night, and always be positive.

5. Reduce Stress

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise will assist your body handle long-term stress. Stress can lead to excessive sweating. It helps to learn how to relax and manage stress in tough situations. For some people, doing meditation, Yoga or deep breathing can be helpful tools in reducing stress. In addition, eating balanced diet and aerobic exercise can release tension.

6. You May Need To Change Your Diet

Sweat can be triggered by certain foods and beverages we consume. Some foods that triggers sweating includes onions, garlic, alcoholic beverages, and caffeinated drinks.

When you drink hot beverage, it will cause your body temperature to rise and signal your body to start producing sweat, and the caffeine will send your central nervous system and your sweat glands into overdrive. Instead of hot beverage, especially when you aren’t in an air-conditioned environment, go for iced, decaf coffee and avoid sweat issue. Consuming spicy foods, like peppers that contain capsaicin, signals your sweat glands to produce sweat.

7. Try a Natural Remedy

The sweating process is being triggered in the hypothalamus in the brain. This gland knows when the body’s core temperature rises, and it sends out the signal to other glands to start sweating. This cycle can be short-circuited by drinking cool water. People who are always in a sweat-prone environment can enhance their antiperspirant by applying talcum powder or baking soda to their underarms to soak up moisture.

You can control underarm sweat by using lime. Simply cut a lime in half and rub it under your arms before going to bed. Rub on the lime until the skin is coated in juice, then allow it dry. The citrus will work as a natural deodorant, and the acidic juice may help halt the production of sweat.

8.  Consider a Medical Solution

Sweating excessively can interfere with your everyday activity, depending on the nature of your work. It may help to consult your doctor for possible treatment options.

Possible treatment options includes:

Injections of botulinum toxin: This form of treatment, commonly referred to as botox, are used in several medical and cosmetic procedures. Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by the bacteria that causes botulism. Botox can be injected under the arms to block the nerves that stimulate sweating. Though this treatment isn’t permanent, it is effective for five to six months.

READ ALSO: Botox: Everything You Need to Know

Oral anticholinergic medications: These help to block the actions of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that helps stimulate sweat glands. It usually begins to improve symptoms in a couple of weeks. These medications act on other body functions, side effect may include constipation, dry mouth, or blurry vision.

Iontophoresis: This is a non-invasive treatment that involves the use of water to deliver a mild electrical shock. A dermatologist uses a small, hand-held device to send a low-level current to the armpits while the body is immersed in water. These treatments temporarily shut off sweat glands. The whole process last about 15 to 30 minutes and are performed once a day over a short period of time.

Antidepressants or tranquilizers: These can be an effective but uncommon solution. If excess sweating is caused by emotional triggers, antidepressants or tranquilizers may be prescribed to help control stress-related symptoms.

Surgery: If the sweating is limited to your armpits, removing the sweat glands in a procedure known as surgical tumescent liposuction may help. Also, endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy is a procedure that involves clipping the nerves that carry messages from the sympathetic nerves to the sweat glands. However, both of these procedures can lead to an increase sweating on other parts of the body.

Health / Menopause And Perimenopause by jannydear(f): 1:24am On Dec 09, 2017
Menopause is the permanent end of menstruation and the leading cause is age. Menopause marks the end of a woman’s childbearing years, triggered by the ovaries slowing down gradually. It is not a disease but it’s a turning point in the life of a woman and it can have a big impact on a woman’s general health and well-being.

Causes of Menopause
The main cause of menopause is age. Certain surgeries and medical treatment can induce early menopause like surgical removal of the ovaries (bilateral oophorectomy), chemotherapy, and pelvic radiation therapy.

Having a hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus) without removing the ovaries does not lead to menopause, even though you will no longer have monthly flow.

When Does Menopause Start?

The National Institute on Aging notes that on average, women are 51 at natural menopause. However menopause can start earlier or later. A few women start menopause as young as 40, and a very small percentage as late as 60. Women who smoke tend to go through menopause earlier than nonsmokers. There is no proven way to predict menopause age. Menopause can only be confirmed after a woman has missed her periods for 12 straight months, without other apparent causes.

Perimenopause

The transition to menopause is called perimenopause. Natural menopause happens progressively not that the ovaries would abruptly stop working. Menopause is a milestone. It’s the day that marks 12 months in a row since a woman’s last period. It’s still possible for a woman to get pregnant during perimenopause. Although a woman’s periods may become more irregular, her ovaries are still working and she still may ovulate intermittently.

What to Expect at Menopause

Menopause affects each woman differently. Some women reach natural menopause with no noticeable problems while others have severe symptoms.

Signs of Menopause

Changes in Monthly Period

A woman’s menstrual period will change as menopause approaches. Those changes vary from woman to woman. Periods may become heavier or lighter, shorter or longer with more or less time between periods. Such changes are normal, but the National Institute on Aging recommends seeing a doctor if your periods come very close together, if you have heavy bleeding or spotting, or if your periods last more than a week.

Symptom of Menopause

1. Hot Flashes
A hot flash is a brief feeling of heat that may cause the face and neck to appear flushed and may cause temporary red blotches to appear on the chest, back, and arms. Hot flashes differ in intensity and may last between 30 seconds and 10 minutes. Sweating and chills may follow too. To deal with hot flashes, doctors advise women to:

Use a fan
Dress in light wears
Avoid spicy foods
Exercise regularly
2. Sleep Issues

Nighttime hot flashes can impede sleep and cause night sweats. Try these sleep tips:

Use a fan in your bedroom.
Avoid heavy bedding.
Choose light cottons as nightwear.
Pets can give off heat, keep them out of bedroom
Keep a damp cloth nearby to quickly cool yourself if you wake up feeling hot and sweaty.
See your doctor if your sleep problems persist.
3. Sex Problems
Women experience vaginal dryness during menopause due to low estrogen level, this can cause intercourse to be uncomfortable or painful. Try using a lubricant that is water-soluble. Note that apart from menopause other factors like depression, relationship issues, medications, poor sleep and others tend to affect sex drive. Talk to your doctor if you have sex problems.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone replacement therapy can do a lot to ease menopausal symptoms. Various prescription products are available to treat hot flashes and vaginal symptoms. However the FDA advises women to take the lowest dose and for a short time because studies have linked long-term use of hormone replacement therapy to breast cancer, strokes, heart attacks and blood clots.

Menopause Health Risks

Menopause comes a greater chance of heart disease and osteoporosis – thinning bones. Loss of estrogen may play a role in heart disease after menopause, but hormone replacement therapy is not recommended to reduce the risk of heart disease or stroke.

Staying Healthy

It’s never too late to start maintaining a healthy lifestyle at menopause. Get a checkup that includes mammograms, measuring your blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol. Menopause is also a great time to upgrade your diet, physical activity, and stress management skills — your doctor can give you pointers as you work together to plan for a healthy menopause.

Health / Important Things Every Woman Should Know About Cervical Cancer by jannydear(f): 2:47am On Dec 03, 2017
The more every women know about cervical cancer, the greater their chances of being able to combat or prevent it.

In the past four decades. death rates from cervical cancer have greatly fallen by more than 50 percent as women have learned more about their risk and as increasing numbers have had Pap tests, which help doctors screen for the disease.

Cervical cancer often shows no early warning signs. Thus, women should learn these four hings in order to protect their health:

All women above 21 should get regular exams and screenings for cervical cancer: This should include an annual pelvic examand a periodic Pap test, considered a routine screening. Cells are collected from the cervix, for a Pap test so they can be examined for any abnormalities. Women in their 20s should get a Pap test every three years as long as their results remain normal. Women 30 to 64 years old should get a Pap test every five years as long as their results remain normal.
The most common cause is human papillomavirus (HPV): About 99 percent of cervical cancers are caused by HPV, which is transmitted sexually. The most common strains of the virus, HPV16 and HPV18, are responsible for about 70 percent of all cases of the disease. Approximately 14 million new HPV infections are detected yearly.
Cervical cancer is often preventable: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved three HPV vaccines. The first was approved in 2006 called Gardasil, to protect against HPV 16 and HPV 18. The second called Cervarix was approved by the FDA in 2009. A third vaccine called Gardasil 9, was approved in 2014. It was shown to be 97 percent effective in preventing cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancerand protecting against additional types of high-risk HPV strains. It’s recommended that young men and women, 9 to 26 years old, be vaccinated against HPV.
Warning signs of cervical cancer may be uncommon: Cervical cancer may cause bleeding, however many women experience irregular periods so this may not seem unusual. The disease does not cause pain or other apparent warning signs, making screening that much more important. Women who suspect a problem should not ignore their symptoms and seek a medical evaluation.

Health / Health Tips To Help Prevent Snoring by jannydear(f): 2:02am On Dec 03, 2017
Snoring

Apart from being very annoying, especially to your bed partner, snoring can also be a potential health concern. Chronic snoring may be associated with sleep apnea, which can lead to sleep deprivation and potential heart diseases.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, certain exercises may strengthen muscles surrounding the airways and help to prevent snoring:

Push the tip of your tongue against the roof of your mouth and slide the tongue backward. Repeat this 20 times.
Suck your tongue upward so that the entire tongue lies against the roof of your mouth. Repeat 20 times.
Force the back of your tongue downward against the floor of your mouth while keeping the tip of your tongue in contact with your bottom front
A snoring spouse often keeps the other person from a good night’s sleep, which can eventually lead to separate bedrooms – a move that isn’t the best for married couples.

Daniel P. Slaughter, MD, an otolaryngologist and snoring expert at Capital Otolaryngology in Austin, Texas says “Snoring can create real problems in a marriage. Not only is snoring a nuisance, but 75% of people who snore have obstructive sleep apnea (when breathing is disrupted during sleep for short periods), which increases the risk of developing heart disease, Slaughter says.

Try these natural solutions and lifestyle changes, which may help you stop snoring.

Change Your Sleep Position

Sleeping on your side may help prevent snoring. Lying on your back makes the base of your tongue and soft palate collapse to the back wall of your throat, causing you to snore during sleep.

A body pillow (a full-length pillow that supports your entire body) can also help to to eliminate snoring during sleep. Also, Taping tennis balls to the back of your pajamas can also stop you from sleeping on your back.

Lose Weight

If you’ve gained weight and started snoring and did not snore before you gained weight, it is advisable then to loss weight. Slaughter says if you gain weight around your neck, it squeezes the internal diameter of the throat, making it more likely to collapse during sleep, triggering snoring.

READ ALSO: 6 Weight Loss Drinks That Can Help You

Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol reduce the resting tone of the muscles in the back of your throat, causing you to effortlessly snore. Drinking alcohol four to five hours before sleeping makes snoring worse.

Avoid Working Long Hours without Sleep

Working long hours without enough sleep caises the muscles to become floppier, this in turn creates snoring when you sleep.

READ ALSO: 6 Proven Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep

Open Blocked Nasal Passages

Keeping nasal passages open may help if snoring starts from your nose. It allows air to move through slower, Slaughter says. “Imagine a narrow garden hose with water running through. The narrower the hose, the faster the water rushes through.”

Your nasal passages work similarly. If your nose is clogged or narrowed due to a cold or other blockage, the fast-moving air is more likely to produce snoring.

Take a hot shower before you go to bed to help unblock nasal passages. Also, keep a bottle of saltwater rinse in the shower. “Rinse your nose out with it while you’re showering to help open up passages,” Slaughter says.

Change Your Pillows

Dust mites accumulate in pillows and can cause allergic reactions that can cause snoring. Allowing pets to sleep on the bed causes you to breathe in animal dander, common sleep irritant.

Put your pillows in the air fluff cycle once every couple weeks and replace them every six months to get rid of dust mites and allergens. Keep pets out of the bedroom.

Drink lots of water

Drink lots of water to avoid secretions in your nose and soft palate become stickier. According to the Institute of Medicine, healthy women should have about 11 cups of total water (from all drinks and food) a day; men require about 16 cups.

Health / Important Facts On Ovulation And Fertility To Help You Get Pregnant by jannydear(f): 12:25pm On Nov 26, 2017
Ovulation occurs when a matured egg is being released from the ovary into the Fallopian tube for fertilization to occur. Normally, an egg matures within a woman’s ovary every month. As it approaches maturity, the egg is released from the ovary into the Fallopian tube where it meets the waiting sperm for fertilization to occur. If fertilization fails to occur, the uterine lining and blood sheds in a process called menstruation.

Know Your Monthly Cycle

You can improve your chances of conceiving by getting to understand your menstrual cycle. The first phase begins with the first day of bleeding during your menstrual flow. Your body releases hormones, like follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), that make the eggs inside your ovaries to grow. This hormone helps to thicken the lining of your uterus in preparation for a fertilized egg. This usually happens between 2 and 14 days.

Understand Your Ovulation

The average menstrual cycle is 28-35 days. Ovulation usually happens between days 11 and 21 of your cycle. A hormone called luteinizing hormone (LH) rushes, causing the release of the egg that's most ripe. To create an easier passage of the sperm to the waiting egg, your cervical mucus becomes slippery.
Women are born with millions of eggs. However, they only release about 300 to 400 through ovulation during their lifetime.

READ ALSO: What Is Cryptic Pregnancy?

Usually, you release just one each month. The egg travels through one of the two Fallopian tubes that connect your ovaries to your uterus or womb. At the perfect timing, the egg may become fertilized by sperm on its way to the uterus. The egg dissolves if fertilization fails to take place within 24 hours of the egg leaving the ovary. On the other hand, the sperm can survive for about 3 to 5 days. You have to understand when you ovulate so you and your partner can plan most likely days for conception to occur.

Track Your Most Fertile Days

A woman has a better chance of achieving conception when she has sex 1-2 days before ovulation. Women with a regular 28-day cycle, should count back 14 days from when they expect their next period to commence. Plan on having sex every other day around days 12 and 14. A man’s sperm count may be low if he engages in sexual activities every day. It may help to use the online ovulation calculator since your cycle may be longer or shorter than the regular 28-day.

Track Ovulation by Temperature

When your body releases an egg, the progesterone kicks in to build and maintain the lining of the uterus. This makes the temperature of your body to faintly rise. So taking your temperature with a basal thermometer every morning before you get out of bed can help you figure out if you ovulated. You can buy these thermometers at the drugstore, though they aren’t 100% accurate.

Predict Ovulation by Hormone

Your ovaries will be triggered to release an egg with a surge or increase in LH which usually occurs about 36 hours before the egg is released. You can detect the ovulation day by using ovulation kits to check LH levels in your urine. Ovulation kits are accurate and convenient and you can use them to buy at the drugstore. They are convenient and accurate. It is advisable to test 1-2 days before you expect the surge so you can take note of the rise in LH.

The Last Phase of Your Monthly Cycle

Progesterone helps to prepare the uterus lining for a fertilized egg during the second half of your menstrual cycle. If fertilization doesn’t occur, the unfertilized egg breaks, leading to a decline in progesterone levels. Then about 12 to 16 days later, the egg, blood and tissues from the lining of the uterus is shed from the body as menstruation. It usually lasts 3 to 7 days.

Weight Affects Fertility

Losing weight can boost your chances of getting pregnant if you are overweight or obese. A study found that women whose body mass index (BMI) was above normal took twice as long to conceive as those with a normal BMI. But a drop in weight can improve rates of ovulation and pregnancy. Obesity can lead to infertility and low testosterone in men. Also, being too underweight can equally lead to infertility.

Age Affects Your Chances of Conception

A decline in age affects fertility, especially in women. It also lowers the chances that fertility treatments will be successful. Consult your doctor if you're under 35 and have been trying to get pregnant for more than 12 months, or over 35 and have been trying for more than 6 months.

How Men Can Boost Fertility

• Manage stress.
• Avoid alcohol and tobacco.
• Maintain a proper weight.
• Eat a diet high in zinc (found in meat, whole grains, seafood, and eggs), selenium (meat, seafood, mushroom, cereals, and Brazil nuts), and vitamin E.
• Keep the testicles cool by avoiding saunas, hot baths, or hot tubs. These can lead to a reduction in the number of sperm.

Health / Cirrhosis – Causes, Symptoms, Treatment by jannydear(f): 2:11pm On Nov 24, 2017
Cirrhosis pronounced "suh-roh-sus" is a very deadly condition in which scarring causes the liver to be completely demaged. The liver, a large organ that is part of the digestive system, does a wide range of complex jobs that are important for life.
Functions of the Liver
• The liver metabolizes alcohol and many drugs
• It makes many important substances, including bile to help digest food and clotting factors to help stop bleeding.
• Controls the amounts of fat, sugar and protein in the bloodstream.
• It filters poisons from the blood.
• Breaks down (metabolizes) alcohol and many drugs.
• Stores important vitamins and minerals.
When cirrhosis ocurs, scar tissue also called fibrosis, replaces healthy tissue. This scar tissue prevents the liver from functioning properly. Cirrhosis can be deadly, however early detection and treatment can help stop damage to the liver.
Causes of Cirrhosis
• Prolonged intake of alcohol
• Chronic viral hepatitis
• Inherited diseases, such as Wilson's disease, cystic fibrosis, or hemochromatosis.
• Autoimmune diseases, such as autoimmune hepatitis or primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC)
• Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)
• Blocked bile ducts
Symptoms of Cirrhosis
You may not have symptoms in the early stages of cirrhosis. But as it deteriorates, it can cause a number of symptoms, including:
• Fatigue
• Small red spots and tiny lines on the skin called spider angiomas.
• Bruising and bleeding easily
• Heavy nosebleeds
• Dramatic Weight loss
• Yellowing of the skin (jaundice)
• Itching
• Swelling from fluid buildup in the legs (edema) and the abdomen (ascites).
• Bleeding from enlarged veins in the digestive tract.
Diagnosis of Cirrhosis
Physical exam and questions about symptoms of past health may be asked by your doctor. If cirrhosis is suspected, you may have blood tests and imaging tests, such as an ultrasound or CT scan. These tests can help your doctor find out what is causing the cirrhosis and degree of severity.
Your doctor to do a liver biopsy to confirm that you have cirrhosis by taking a needle to take a sample of liver tissue for testing.
Treatment of Cirrhosis
Treatment of Cirrhosis may include surgery, medicines or other options, depending on the cause of your cirrhosis. Treatment cannot cure cirrhosis, but it can sometimes prevent or delay further liver damage. So getting treatment urgently is essential.
There are things you can do to help limit the damage to your liver and control the symptoms:
• Don’t drink any alcohol.
• Talk to your doctor before you take any medication. This includes both prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, supplements, and herbs. Medicines that can hurt your liver include acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) and other pain medicines such as aspirin, ibuprofen (such as Advil or Motrin), and naproxen (Aleve).
• Make sure that your immunizations are up-to-date. You are at higher risk for infections.
• Follow a low-sodium diet. This can help prevent fluid buildup, a common problem in cirrhosis that can become life-threatening.
Symptoms may not appear until a problem is severe. So it's important to see your doctor for regular checkups and lab tests. You may also need testing to check for possible problems such as enlarged veins in your digestive tract or liver cancer.
If cirrhosis becomes life-threatening, then a liver transplant may be an option. But a transplant is expensive, organs are hard to find, and it doesn't always work.
If your cirrhosis isn’t improving, you may want to make important end-of-life decisions, such as writing a living will. It can be comforting to know that you will get the type of care you want.
You can also join a support group and talk with other people.

Pets / New Research Prove Dog Owners Live Longer, Healthier Lives by jannydear(f): 2:55am On Nov 18, 2017
According to a new study carried out on more than 3.4 million people, owning a dog is linked to a longer life.
The latest research, published in Scientific Reports, suggests that canine companions may be good for human health, especially for people who living alone.
To study the link between owning a pet dog and longevity, researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden reviewed national registry records of Swedish men and women, ages 40 to 80.
They focused on 3.4 million people who had no history of cardiovascular disease in 2001, and followed their health records—as well as whether they registered as a dog owner—for about 12 years.
Dog ownership registries are mandatory in Sweden, and every visit to a hospital is recorded in a national database.
They discovered that dog owners had a lower risk of death due to cardiovascular disease than people who did not report owning a dog, as well as a lower risk of death from other causes. That was true even after adjusting for factors such as body mass index, socioeconomic status and even smoking.
The protective effect was especially noticeable for people living alone, who have been found to have a higher risk for early death than those who live with other people. People who lived alone with a dog had a 33% reduced risk of death, and an 11% reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, than people who lived alone without a dog.
The study—with a sample size hundreds of times larger than any other studies on this topic—was not designed to show a cause-and-effect relationship between dog ownership and reduced risk of death or cardiovascular disease, or to determine why these factors may be linked.
It’s possible that people who choose to own dogs may simply be more active and in better health to begin with, say the authors.
Senior author Tove Fall, a veterinarian and associate professor of epidemiology says, it’s also possible and very likely that taking care of a dog prompts people to stay active and live a healthier lifestyle.
“I have met numerous owners that are convinced that their pet has been instrumental for them, often in terms of social support,” says Fall. “As a dog owner, I also notice that the people I meet during walks are often other dog owners, especially in bad weather.”

Health / Coughing Up Blood (hemoptysis): Causes, Tests And Treatment by jannydear(f): 10:03pm On Nov 15, 2017
oughing blood also known as hemoptysis, can be a sign of a severe medical condition such as cancer, infections, problems in blood vessels or in the lungs. Coughing up blood generally requires medical evaluation unless the hemoptysis is caused by bronchitis.

Causes of Hemoptysis

There are many potential reasons for coughing up blood. Causes for coughing blood include:

Bronchitis(acute or chronic), the most common cause of coughing up blood. Hemoptysis due to bronchitis isn’t life-threatening.
Bronchiectasis
Lung cancer or non-malignant lung tumours
Use of blood thinners
Pneumonia
Pulmonary embolism
Congestive heart failure especially due to mitral stenosis
Tuberculosis
Inflammatory or autoimmune conditions (lupus, Wegener’s granulomatosis, microscopic polyangiitis, Churg-Strauss syndrome, and many others)
Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (AVMs)
Crack cocaine
Trauma, such as a gunshot wound or motor vehicle accident
Dieulafoy’s disease
Hemoptysis can also come from bleeding outside the lungs and airways. Severe nosebleeds or vomiting of blood from the stomach can result in blood draining into the windpipe or trachea. The blood is then coughed up, appearing as hemoptysis.

In many people with hemoptysis, no cause is ever identified. Most people with mysterious hemoptysis are no longer coughing up blood after six months.

Hemoptysis Tests

In people who are coughing up blood, testing focuses on determining the rate of bleeding and any risk to breathing. The cause for hemoptysis must then be identified. Tests for coughing up blood include:

History and physical examination: By talking to and examining someone who is coughing up blood, a doctor gathers clues that help identify the cause.

Chest X-ray: This test may show a mass in the chest, areas of fluid or congestion in the lungs, or it can be normal.

Computed tomography (CT scan): A CT scan can reveal some causes for coughing up blood by producing detailed images of structures in the chest.

Bronchoscopy: For this test, the doctor uses an endoscope (A flexible tube with a camera on its end). The endoscope is passed through the nose or mouth into the windpipe and airways to identify the cause of hemoptysis.

Complete blood count(CBC): A test of the number of white and red blood cells in the blood, along with platelets (cells that help blood clot).

Urinalysis: Certain causes of hemoptysis also result in abnormalities on this simple urine test.

Coagulation tests: Changes in blood’s ability to clot can cause bleeding and coughing up blood.

Arterial blood gas: A test of the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. Oxygen levels can be low in people coughing up blood.

Pulse oximetry: In this test, a probe (usually on a finger) tests the level of oxygen in the blood.

Treatments for Hemoptysis

For people who are coughing up blood, treatments are targeted at stopping the bleeding, as well as treating the original cause of hemoptysis. Treatments include:

Bronchial artery embolization. A doctor advances a catheter through the leg into an artery supplying blood to the lungs. By injecting dye and viewing the arteries on a video screen, the doctor identifies the source of bleeding. That artery is then blocked, using metal coils or another substance. Bleeding usually stops, and other arteries compensate for the newly blocked artery.

Surgery. Coughing up blood, if severe and life-threatening, may require surgery to remove a lung (pneumonectomy).

Bronchoscopy. Tools on the end of the endoscope can be used to treat some causes of coughing up blood. For example, a balloon inflated inside the airway may help stop bleeding.

Treatments for hemoptysis should also address the underlying reason for coughing up blood. Other treatments for people coughing blood may include:

Antibiotics for pneumonia or tuberculosis
Chemotherapy and/ for lung cancer
Steroids for inflammatory conditions
When to See a Doctor

The most common reason for coughing up blood is acute bronchitis, which typically gets better on its own without medication. People with bronchitis with small amounts of blood in the mucus for less than a week can watch carefully and wait for their condition to improve. Call your doctor if you have any of these symptoms:

Blood in mucus that lasts longer than a week, is severe or getting worse, or comes and goes over time
Chest pain
Weight loss
Soaking sweats at night
Shortness of breath with your usual activity level
Fever higher than 101 degrees

Health / Discover If Sex Really Trigger Cardiac Arrest by jannydear(f): 5:01pm On Nov 13, 2017
New studies have discovered that sexual activity in reality rarely causes cardiac arrest, unlike it is portrayed in most movies.
The researchers noted that sex was linked to only 34 out of more than 4,500 cardiac arrests that occurred in the Portland, Ore., metropolitan area between 2002 and 2015. That's a rate of just 0.7%.
According to the study, 18 of such cases occurred during sex and 15 immediately after sex.
"I'm a little surprised at the really tiny number," said study senior researcher Dr. Sumeet Chugh, medical director of the Heart Rhythm Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. "But mostly I feel it's reassuring data."
Chugh said it is a bit of a good news for patients with heart problems who aren't sure if sexual intercourse could be unsafe.
"Previously we would say the risk is probably low, but we don't know how low, now we have data and we can say to them the risk is very low," Chugh stated.
The new reports are part of a 16-year study of heart risk factors linking about a million people living in and around Portland.
"Sexual activity is just one variable in the whole big picture" of cardiac risks, but one that hasn't been studied in depth, Chugh said.
The findings indicated that men are more likely than women to have their heart stop as a result of sex. Just two of the 34 cardiac arrest patients were female.
However in general, sex was connected to only 1 percent of all cardiac arrests that happened in men.
Other heart experts said they weren't shocked by the results.
Sex just isn't as vigorous as people believe. The aerobic activity associated with sex is equivalent to climbing two flights of stairs, explained Dr. Nieca Goldberg. She is director of the NYU Center for Women's Health and an AHA spokeswoman.
Dr. Martha Gulati, chief of cardiology for the University of Arizona College of Medicine, said, "Although a lot of us think sex requires an extreme level of activity, even in the most thrilling situations it's not as intense as people imagine it."
The safety of sex comes up from time to time with patients who've suffered a heart attack or have been diagnosed with a heart problem, Goldberg and Gulati said.
Sex is safe for most heart patients, except they are unable to maintain even low levels of activity or have symptoms that keep them from doing daily routines like making the bed or cleaning the house.
Goldberg suggested that "doctors really should be discussing this information with their patients to assuage their fears they may have after a cardiac diagnosis, that most people return safely to having sexual activity."
Chugh added that there's hope for people who have a cardiac arrest from sex because they're almost twice as likely to survive.
About 19 percent of the patients in sex-related cardiac arrest cases survived their ordeal, compared with an average survival rate of around 10 percent nationwide, he said.
