Says 10,000 tested so far The Federal Government has taken drastic measures to ensure Kano State does not become an additional epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation and chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, said this in Abuja yesterday at a briefing of the PTF. Lagos is currently the epicentre of the disease in the country with the highest number of cases. He said: “The situation in Kano is still being assessed and monitored closely. Based on preliminary findings, the PTF has directed the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control to send an enhanced support team, mobilize resources for contact tracing and immediately ensure that necessary steps are taken in conjunction with state government to contain the spread of the pandemic in Kano and stop the city from becoming the next epicentre.” Mustapha expressed concern over the alleged non-compliance by private medical facilities with the directive to seek accreditation before treating coronavirus-related cases. He said all donations to Nigeria “go into various designated collection accounts opened by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation and swept into a Treasury Single Account with the Central Bank of Nigeria on a daily basis. The PTF does not manage any COVID-19 related donation or funds.” Director-General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Chikwe Ihekweazu, said 10,000 persons had been tested so far for COVID-19 in Nigeria. Scores are feared killed in Katsina state as bandits launched multiple attacks in three local government areas of Safana, Danmusa and Dutsinma. Sources say the attacks were coming few days after relief materials were shared to some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the area. The beneficiaries were said to have gone home with food items given to them by the government when the bandits struck in the early hours, snatching them away. The villagers formed some resistance which led to more bandits coming out in large numbers to attack unsuspecting people in the areas and killing many, our reporter gathered. A source also confided in our reporter that many corpses are being brought to hospitals across the areas. “As I’m talking to you, the attacks are ongoing”, he added. When contacted, Police spokesman in the state is yet to respond to enquiries made on the attack. In reaction to the controversy generated by the planned installation of the fifth generation of mobile technologies (5G telecom network) in Nigeria, the Federal Government, as well as information technology and medical experts said there’s no evidence that it causes coronavirus and transmits diseases. They said misinformation and lack of effective communication caused the rumour and subsequent controversy. In an exclusive interview with Daily Trust on Sunday, the president of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Olusola Teniola said, “The lockdown in the United Kingdom has given an opportunity to those opposed to the deployment of 5G technology to spread fake news and fear into some parts of the population,’’ adding that there is no empirical evidence to prove that 5G caused COVID-19. “There is no link , and we need to listen to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and government medical specialists about how COVID-19 is caused and spread and take proper measures to avoid the spread of the virus by following the advice of medical practitioners on self-isolation, and keeping hands clean during these uncertain times,’’ he added. According to him, there is no scientific data or research pointing to any harmful effect on human beings. He further said government acted wisely by allowing an independent study after the 5G trial last year on both 3.5GHz and 26GHz spectrums. “However, very little has been done on frequencies above 6 GHz, and like when 2G technology was launched, no one on earth has a definite answer on what happens with wide and mass roll out of wireless (mobile) technology for the sort of applications envisioned to be developed on it. “We are dealing with complex technologies, and this sometimes causes doubt in the minds of those that don’t understand it,’’ he said, adding that the controversy is a wake-up call. We have not issued 5G licence in Nigeria – FG Although the Federal Government said it had not issued any 5G mobile telecom licence in the country, some Nigerians think otherwise. They allege that 5G cables were laid, even during the period of lockdown. The executive vice chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta said the ongoing laying of fibre optic cables and the deployment of other telecom equipment by mobile network operators across Lagos and other states was entirely to expand their infrastructure across the country and not for 5G deployment. He made this clarification in response to insinuations being spread by some individuals through viral video, audio and textual contents on the social media, claiming that some ongoing digging/excavation activities and laying of fibre optic cables by mobile network operators in Lagos and some other states are connected to the deployment of 5G equipment. Danbatta said, “As we speak, any information suggesting or claiming that the equipment being deployed by network operators are for 5G is purely false. It is deliberately orchestrated by individuals who are bent on creating ill-feelings in the industry.” He called on Nigerians to disregard such ill-motivated information in its entirety. “As telecom regulators, we enjoin Nigerians to get accurate information from us rather than relying on information on the social media,” Danbatta added. He further said the ongoing digging and laying of fibre optic cables by some operators were in accordance with agreements reached during meetings by the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami and the management of the NCC, with the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), led by Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the governor of Ekiti State, in January this year. European police have foiled an attempt to cheat German health authorities out of millions of euros by selling them non-existent face masks during the coronavirus pandemic, Europol said Tuesday. Police action in two countries came as Germany moved towards the progressive lifting of restrictions against COVID-19 which has claimed around 3,000 lives in the country. Experts say however that any easing would be accompanied by an obligation to wear a face mask while using public transport, to prevent a resurgence of infections. Europol said two companies were contracted by the German government in mid-March to buy face masks valued at 15 million euros ($16.4 million) as global stocks ran low. After a sale failed to materialise off a website supposedly based in Spain, the two companies were referred to a ‘trusted” dealer in Ireland. “The Irish middleman promised to put them in touch with a different supplier, this time in the Netherlands,” who could supply the masks, Europol said. An initial deal was made in which the companies paid 1.5 million euros for the delivery of 1.5 million masks. “The buyers initiated a bank transfer to Ireland and prepared for delivery, which involved 52 lorries and a police escort to transport the masks from a warehouse in the Netherlands to the final destination in Germany,” Europol said. However, just before the delivery was due, the criminals said they needed another 800,000 euros “in order to secure the merchandise”. The buyers sent the wire transfer but the masks never arrived. “It turns out the Dutch company existed, but their website had been cloned. There was no official record of the order,” Europol said. Police and law enforcement agencies including Europol and Interpol quickly scrambled in a race to recover the money. The Irish police’s Economic Crimes Bureau on a tip-off from Interpol froze 1.5 million euros in an account in n Irish bank and identified an Irish company involved. The Dutch Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIOD)tracked down the 800,000 euros — of which 500,000 had already been paid into a British bank account, destined for an account in Nigeria. Thanks to an alert raised by investigators, the British bank was able to recall the full amount. Those funds have now been returned to the Netherlands and frozen by authorities. Dutch police arrested two suspects in the ongoing probe, Europol said. (AFP) Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/covid-19-how-europol-foiled-e1-5m-face-masks-fraud-traced-to-nigeria.html |
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, says the number of Nigerians willing to return from abroad is so high that they cannot be accommodated in the available isolation centres in the country. He said this in Abuja yesterday at a briefing of the Presidential Taskforce Force on COVID-19. “We’ve received all the numbers from our various embassies around the world and we’re collating them. Then we’ve now selected two airlines that would be responsible to fetch them. The numbers are high and the places where we can isolate them are not enough for those numbers. “So, we would’ve to do it in a staggered fashion and together with the NEMA and the Ministry of Health, we would’ve to come to an agreement to be bringing (them) back according to the numbers of beds and so forth that are available. We’ve now identified and we can go on with process. We are almost ready to go,” Onyeama said. The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, urged Nigerians to report any perceived illegal entry into the country through the nation’s borders, to the Nigeria Immigration Service. He also urged the states sharing borders with other countries like Lagos, Sokoto, Cross Rivers, Zamfara, Taraba, Kebbi, Niger and others to ensure that the boarders were closely monitored so as not to allow any aliens into the country at this period to stem the spread of the COVID-19 in the country.
