PoliticsOshiomhole, Secondus ‘missing’ As Political Activities Standstill by jarawa(op): 9:32am On Apr 16, 2020
The two leaders of the country’s major political parties, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Prince Uche Secondus, of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have disappeared from the political space shortly after announcing the closure of their party headquarters. The closure of the two parties’ headquarters followed confirmation of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

Secondus seems to have gone underground as his whereabouts have remained unknown. But sources close to him said he might have gone underground as a precautionary measure to protect himself and his family from the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

Early this year, he took prominent Nigerians to his native Andoni community in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State where he gave out the hand of his daughter in marriage.

The event was attended by prominent Nigerians such as governors Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto, Bala Muhammed of Bauchi, Nyesom Wike and other top notchers of the PDP. Shortly after the wedding, Secondus on March 21, 2020 attended the Rivers State congress of the party where he joined Governor Wike and other party faithful to elect Nigeria’s former Ambassador to South Korea, Desmond Akawor, as the party’s state chairman.

The state party congress was the last public appearance of the PDP national chairman. William Jumbo Street, a Government Reservation Area (GRA), where he lives and which had in the past become a mecca of sorts anytime he was in Port Harcourt, has not witnessed any such serious activities, it was learnt.

A close associate of Secondus, who craved anonymity, said the party chairman might be residing in his Abuja residence. “There is lull in politics now. What Nigeria is greatly concerned with is how to contain the COVID-19 pandemic which is fast spreading across the country. “So, nobody is talking about politics now. The National Secretariat of PDP was shut down and all the leaders of the party have gone underground.

But I believe that when this pandemic is finally contained, normalcy will return to the political space,” the source said. Oshiomhole observes stay-at-home order in Abuja One of the aides of the National Chairman of APC, who pleaded for anonymity, told Daily Trust that his boss was at his residence at Aso Drive area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, where he has been living since the coronavirus lockdown in the country.

This was confirmed by two APC chieftains in Edo State; Samson Osagie and Henry Idiagbon. Idiagbon, who said that he had been in constant touch with him through phone, added, “As you know, Abuja is in total lockdown and as a law-abiding citizen, Oshiomhole is observing the lockdown in his house in Abuja. “We all know that he had contact with somebody that tested positive, he did his own test and it is negative.

“His birthday came up April 4 but because of the COVID-19 and the lockdown in Abuja, he didn’t celebrate. He was in his house and didn’t receive visitors. He only speaks through the phone. “There is very little to manage in the party’s affairs at the moment. But if there is anything that needs attention, that will be sorted out through phone because the phones are not quarantined. The same way that there are no economic activities, there are also no political activities.”

On his part, Osagie, who said Oshiomhole, is doing fine and healthy in Abuja, added that “As far as the party is concerned, Oshiomhole is a committed party chairman who wants his party to succeed but he will not be doing that in the face of a global pandemic that is threatening the lives of global citizens, particularly Nigerians. “He is a sensitive leader who understands that politics can only be played when the people are in the right state of health. So, you should not expect him to be jumping up and down talking about the APC.

“All he can do is to support the government and its efforts to control the spread of the virus so that sooner or later the people can be free of this virus and return to normal life. The welfare, safety and health of the people are of great concern to Oshiomhole,” he said.

The last public assignment of Oshiomhole took place on March 23, 2020 when he announced the closure of the party’s National Secretariat in Wuse 2, Abuja due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

PoliticsPanic Buying In Kano Ahead Of 7-Day Lockdown by jarawa(op): 9:20am On Apr 16, 2020
There was panic buying across markets in Kano metropolis yesterday as the state goes on seven days lockdown beginning from today. Our reporters also observed massive turnout at ATM points as bank customers besiege their bankers for withdrawal ahead of the week-long total lockdown.

It would be recalled that Kano State Government on Tuesday announced that markets and worship centres across the state would be put on total halt for seven days beginning from 10pm today to curb and contain the spread of coronavirus among the public. It is on record that as at yesterday the state’s confirmed cases of COVID-19 have risen to nine, since from the time the index case was recorded last Saturday.

Some residents who were on the last minute purchases told Daily Trust that prices of foodstuff and other basic commodities have skyrocketed ahead of the lockdown. MC Ibrahim Sharuh khan, who was at Sahad stores for shopping ahead of the lockdown decried the sudden increase in the price of commodities and foodstuff across the markets. He said “I was actually planning to stock food stuff for the month of Ramadan, but with the sudden announcement of the lockdown, people are rushing to buy for fear of the unknown, and that is why I am here to shop.”

“I was at the Yankaba market and the price of items has also gone up. For instance, a measure of Irish potato that we used to buy for N5,000 is now N7,000; that of N1,500 is now N2,000, same thing with yam tubers,” he said. Hajiya Hafsat blamed the sudden price increase on the marketers who unnecessarily increase the prices of commodities, just to maximize profit at the expense of the consumers. “Barely 24 hours, the price of 25 litres cooking oil was N12,500 but today it has been increased to N14,000.

This is something they already have in stores, why should they take undue advantage of this terrible situation by increasing prices of items?” she queried. However, some of the residents lamented about the lockdown, describing it as a measure aiming at inflicting more hardship and pains on the poor masses especially those living on daily wages. Malam Rabiu Isa, a grocery seller at Tarauni Market told Daily Trust that, “For people that live from hand-to-mouth, just like me, the seven days lockdown order is torture for the poor.”

Babangida Shua’ibu Mohammad, another trader shared the same opinion saying “If palliatives are not given to the poor and vulnerable families with utmost urgency, more people in the state will die of hunger.” Abubakar Aliyu Tarauni on his part said “We have seen several epidemics and dangerous diseases including malaria, cholera and many more deadly outbreaks but we have never had a total lockdown as this coronavirus era. Stopping someone that survives from daily earnings is an infringement on the human rights,” he said.

PoliticsCOVID-19: Our Daily Testing Capacity Now 3,000 — FG by jarawa(op): 6:44am On Apr 16, 2020
* partners states against community transmission
* says no Chinese medical expert in Nigeria tested positive
* warns against victims’ stigmatisation
* to increase number of beneficiaries of palliatives

The Federal Government says Nigeria now has the capacity to carry out 3,000 COVID-19 tests daily due to the increase in the number of testing laboratories. Director-General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Chikwe Ihekweazu, said this in Abuja yesterday at the 12th joint national briefing of the Presidential Taskforce Force on COVID-19. “The bottle neck now is not the testing, but collecting the samples from the right people and getting it into the lab,” he said.

The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, said: “To ensure maximum utilisation of our increased testing capacity, the case definition and testing criteria have been expanded to include not only contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases with fever and respiratory tract symptoms, but also all persons with fever and respiratory tract symptoms of unknown cause.” He warned against stigmatisation or social ridicule of COVID-19 patients. “We don’t want people feeling that this is something so terrible that you should be ashamed of. The population should not drive stigma by wanting to know were those people live so that you can avoid the area.

You should take your own measures and not contribute to using that as an excuse to create stigma,” he said. He also said that the facemasks must be used only in combination with hand washing, physical distancing, and good respiratory hygiene and not as substitute for them. He said the medical grade facemasks were best reserved for patients and health workers who needed them most, especially with the globally limited availability of the PPE. While commending Nigerians for their sacrifices and understanding as the government worked towards defeating COVID-19, he said the inconveniences were worth it, especially to stem community transmission.

The national coordinator of the taskforce, Dr Sani Aliyu, said the federal and state governments had agreed on measures to stem the community transmission of coronavirus in the country. “We all agreed that we needed improve coordination and synergy between the federal and state governments. “We need to provide a simple message to the communities on the need to protect themselves.

We also agreed to have more effective logistics and identified assets that can be used for the purpose of the pandemic and to also work with the private sector to provide a more sustainable arrangement for the health sector in the future as we emerge from this pandemic,” he said.

On the usage of schools for isolation centres, Aliyu said: “If a school is used as an isolation centre, then, obviously after the pandemic, I’m sure that there would be processes in place to clean up such school to be able to function again.”

He said the taskforce had been working closely with the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and with other Islamic organisations in preparation for this year’s Ramadan. He pleaded with communities to maintain physical distancing and other preventive measures during the period of Ramadan. He said: “We need to be alive and well in order to be able to pray. If you’re sick, you’ll not be able to pray and neither would you be able to pray if you’re not alive.”

Aliyu asked COVID-19 patients not to despair, but keep hope alive.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, dismissed a message on social media that one of the 15 Chinese medical experts who arrived in Nigeria last week tested positive for the COVID-19.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation and chairman of the taskforce, Boss Mustapha, said: “The PTF is fine-tuning the expansion of palliatives for the poor, vulnerable, aged, and others as directed by the president and we shall reach you very soon. Similarly, the additional regulations and protocols will be released to the public.”

PoliticsOgun PDP Crisis: You’re A Bad Politician, Dayo Blasts Kashamu by jarawa(op): 5:36pm On Apr 15, 2020
The embattled Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Engr. Bayo Dayo, on Wednesday described the party’s 2019 governorship candidate, Senator Buruji Kashamu, as a “bad politician” who does not care about the interest of his followers.

Dayo, who was suspended by the State Working Committee (SWC) of the PDP having fallen out with Kashamu, accused him (Kashamu) of masterminding the suspension drama, using those he called “amateur politicians.” He equally declared that the ward and local government congresses earlier conducted in the state “can no more stand” in the spirit of the reconciliatory moves to unite the factions of PDP in the state. Speaking with newsmen at his residence in Ijebu – Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area of the state, the embattled chairman rubbished the suspension, saying only the National Working Committee of the PDP can take any disciplinary measure against him.

Daily Trust reports that the PDP loyal to Kashamu, in a statement signed by the Publicity Secretary, Oyejide Sunkanmi, had on Monday announced the suspension of Dayo as the State Chairman, citing alleged anti-party activities. Also, Kashamu, in a statement personally signed on Tuesday accused Dayo of betrayal, saying he was hell-bent on trading the party structure for “mere N100m.”

But Dayo said, as an out-going Chairman, he had championed unity between the two factions of the PDP, a move, he said Kashamu rebuffed. He noted that PDP’s popularity has been dwindling in the state following the protracted crisis, but regretted that Kashamu “is not interested in the unity of the PDP.” “We tried it in 2011, we failed. We failed in 2015. We failed in 2019. When Senator Buruji Kashamu contested for the Senate in 2015, he had over 120,000 votes (in Ogun East Senatorial District), but he only had 70,000 votes when he contested governorship in 2019.

It means that we are reducing in popularity and we should not allow that to continue. “So, I thought if we can end the crisis, it will be a big glory before leaving office. If we can unite ourselves and work together, but Senator Buruji Kashamu does not want that settlement. He wants to go on and on, and be giving us irrelevant orders. If he gives order sometimes, whether we like it or not, we follow his order, but politics is not run that way.

“He is a very good leader, no doubt. But he is not a good politician. A good politician should be thinking of his followers. We should be thinking of all the young men and women that are behind us. If we don’t win election, how are they going to benefit from government? It’s not going to happen,” he said. Dayo denied allegation that he collected N50m “to sell” the party structure to the former House of Representatives, Ladi Adebutu’s faction, saying “I’m only interested in the unity of the party.”

Speaking of the congresses earlier conducted in flagrant disregard to the NWC’s directive, Dayo said: “The congresses can no more stand because we are doing reconciliation. We don’t want to leave anybody out. It’s going to be all inclusive. So, in our reconciliation efforts, we are going to divide positions in the ward, Local Government and the state.”

PoliticsRescue Chibok Girls, Leah Sharibu Now — Ezekwesili by jarawa(op): 10:35am On Apr 15, 2020
Oby Ezekwesili, one of the conveners of the BringBackOurGirls movement, said yesterday that after six years, there should be no more excuses or delay in the rescue of the remaining Chibok schoolgirls and Leah Sharibu from the captivity of the Boko Haram insurgents. Ezekwesili stated this in a live broadcast on the social media app, Twitter, to commemorate the group’s fourth Annual Chibok Girls’ Lecture.

She alleged that the lack of empathy of the Nigerian state was the reason the remaining 112 ChibokGirls were still in captivity. She noted that the group’s commitment to the rescue the girls had not changed.

PoliticsCOVID-19: How Buhari Failed To Take Action In Vital Weeks by jarawa(op): 6:33am On Apr 09, 2020
‘Community-based cases recorded’ Plans in place to tackle spread – NCDC ‘Some measures could be counterproductive’ The coronavirus has spread to 16 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with fears of escalation amid criticism by experts that President Muhammadu Buhari did not take action at the right time to stem the tide. The experts said had the president heeded the advice of some leading scientists in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak in China, Nigeria could have had none or fewer cases of the disease.

With Nigeria’s index case recorded on February 27, our curve has gradually climbed to 276 as at yesterday night, no thanks to the failure of the federal government to have ordered the closure of airports and sea borders following the index case reported from Wuhan, China, experts told Daily Trust. How WHO raised the alarm On January 30, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). Earlier on January 11, China reported the first novel coronavirus related death of a 61-year-old man who had visited the animal market in Wuhan.

Twelve days later, China took a proactive measure by imposing a strict lockdown on Wuhan, suspending flights and trains and shutting down subways, buses and ferries in an attempt to stem the spread of the virus. WHO upgraded the status of the COVID-19 from an epidemic to a pandemic on March 11 with a strong call for countries to detect, test, treat, isolate, trace, and mobilise their citizens to ensure that those with just a handful of cases could prevent the wider spread of the deadly virus. The call was reportedly made against the backdrop of growing concerns that many countries were not acting swiftly enough or taking the urgent and aggressive action that WHO said were required to mitigate the spread of the virus. Even as the deadly virus spread from China with amazing rapidity across the United States, between late January and early March, the Nigerian government still ignored calls to close our airports and sea borders as a preventive measure.

As African countries like Kenya and Ghana also proactively closed their borders when cases of the disease were few, the ‘giant of Africa’ simply tethered. Wake-up calls from critical stakeholders like the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) urging the federal government to close all land and sea borders fell on deaf ears. For instance, following reports of rising cases in March, the president of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Francis Faduyile, reportedly said it was high time the Nigerian government took the decision to “close its borders to countries with high cases of coronavirus.”

A civil society group, Advocacy for Integrity and Economic Development (AIED), had also called on Buhari to close the nation’s borders. The group’s director of media and publicity, Comrade O’Seun John, in a statement said: “We find it extremely hard to understand the motive behind the refusal of President Buhari’s administration to close the Nigerian borders and shut down our airports against travellers from coronavirus-infected countries in the wake of the pandemic. “It is unexplainable that a father will knowingly and wishfully expose his children to the cold hands of death to satisfy the ego of superiority in the fight against the deadly COVID-19.

“Let’s make no mistake, Nigeria is on the brink of an outbreak and like South Korea, which was doing everything right until Patient Number 31 decided to disobey social distancing orders, we cannot afford to leave the country to the unseen hands of the divine. “President Buhari must take action. This is not a plea. He swore an oath of allegiance to Nigeria and Nigerians, and the safety of Nigerians must come first.” The failure of the president to heed such calls soon lent credence to allegations that he was reluctant in suspending flights and shutting borders because he was expecting his daughter back from the UK. It was also alleged that the delay was to allow for the return of his Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, who was in Germany as well as other VIPs that were attending a birthday party in London.

Kyari later returned to the country and tested positive for the deadly disease. Although the index case in Nigeria was recorded on February 27 and the second on March 9, it was not until March 23, almost a month later and by which time there were at least 40 cases that the country appeared to have woken up and started playing catch-up. On March 18 the government announced it was restricting entry into the country for travellers from China, Italy, Iran, South Korea, Spain, Japan, France, Germany, US, Norway, UK, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Ironically, on that same day, the Federal Ministry of Health confirmed five new cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria.

Among the cases, three arrived from the United States, while two came in from the United Kingdom, according to the Nigerian Centre for Diseases Control. Three days later (on March 21) when the Nigerian government announced it would close its two main international airports in the cities of Lagos and Abuja for one month, the Federal Ministry of Health confirmed 10 additional cases of the coronavirus in the country, bringing the total number on that day to 22.

A breakdown as announced by the NCDC showed that three of the new cases were discovered in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) while seven cases were in Lagos State. All the 10 new cases recorded on that day were Nigerian nationals, nine of whom had travel history to the UK, Spain, Netherlands, Canada and France. Prof. Oyewale Tomori, the immediate past president of the Nigerian Academy of Science, said the increasing number of cases in Nigeria is expected and a natural follow up to our late start in instituting appropriate preventive measures.

“The COVID-19 disease started in the last months of 2019 in China, and we naturally assumed that the cases would be imported from China, given the large number of Nigerians who regularly make business trips to China. “For the first two months of what soon became a pandemic, we did not detect a single case and we were almost beginning to think that we were immune to the disease, an idea buoyed by the non-report of cases in sub-Saharan Africa,” Prof. Tomori said.

Suleiman A. Suleiman, Executive Director, Centre for Media, Policy and Accountability, and Assistant Professor in Politics and Communication at the American University of Nigeria, Yola said the question for Nigeria is not just what governments are doing now or may have to do in the weeks or months ahead to contain this virus, important as these are.

“The real question is why let the virus into the country in the first place? This is important because for all intents and purposes, COVID-19 arrived Nigeria not as a matter of inevitability, but almost by the government’s own invitation. The federal government had at least three clear windows of opportunity to shut the virus out of Nigeria altogether.

Unfortunately, the government did not take any of them,” he said. After a prolonged silence, President Buhari on March 29 announced the shutdown of Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Ogun State with a view to containing the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The president said the government would use the “containment period to identify, trace and isolate all individuals that have come into contact with confirmed cases.”

Foreign AffairsDubai Suspends Marriage, Divorce During Virus Lockdown by jarawa(op): 3:22pm On Apr 08, 2020
Coronavirus lockdowns may make or break relationships, but in Dubai marriages and divorces have been suspended “until further notice” to avoid gatherings that could spread the disease. Dubai’s justice department said Wednesday that the decision was among the “measures to prevent the spread of the pandemic” rolled out in the emirate which is under a strict lockdown.

Justice Khaled al-Hawsni of the family court also said on the department’s website that couples who have already completed marriage formalities must not organise wedding parties “even among their immediate circles”. The United Arab Emirates has recorded more than 2,000 cases of the coronavirus, and 12 deaths.

All citizens and residents other than those in essential services require a permit to leave their homes. Dubai, one of the seven emirates that make up the country, has come to a virtual halt with its famous mega-malls and sprawling hotels shuttered. Life under the lockdown has raised many questions among anxious citizens.

One Emirati man contacted police to ask whether he needs a permit to visit his second wife, the Gulf News daily reported, without saying what the answer was. Polygamy is allowed in the country, with men allowed to have four wives at the same time, in accordance with Islamic law.

PoliticsSanwo-Olu: Food Relief Package Not Meant For Every Lagos Resident by jarawa(op): 6:25am On Apr 08, 2020
Governor Babajide O. Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has explained the mode of distribution of the state government’s food relief package and the category of beneficiaries, saying it is not meant for all residents of the state. The welfare package is one of the decisions taken by the Lagos State Executive Council to ease the discomfort that the lockdown announced by the federal government has visited on residents, especially the poor ones who earn daily income.

Numerous accusations, complaints and criticisms have, however, trailed the relief package as many residents alleged bias and lies in its distribution. Sanwo-Olu, giving an update on the issue yesterday, re-emphasised that the first stage of the welfare package was designed to cater for 200,000 households, with each household comprising a father, mother and four children only across the 20 local governments and 37 local council development authorities (LCDA).

The governor posited it was a misconception that the package was meant for all residents in the state. He clarified that the package was targeted at only indigent and vulnerable members of the society and disclosed that about 100,000 households across the state had been reached since the exercise started. He said, “All aged residents who are above 60 years of age and are registered with the Lagos State Residents’ Registration Agency (LASRRA) were sent text messages and requested to confirm the accuracy of their details, such as name and home address. They have since responded to the text messages so as to benefit from the package.”

He said that the food relief materials for those above 60 years were being delivered directly to them by representatives of the state government based on the data with LASRRA. He explained further that the other category of beneficiaries comprised the indigent and vulnerable in the various communities at the grassroots.

“As part of strategies to ensure that the relief packages reach the deserving beneficiaries, the state government involved Community Development Associations (CDAs) and their Committees, as well as community and religious leaders to collate the names of community members who deserve to benefit from the palliative measure.

The CDAs were also tasked to ensure the items were judiciously distributed,” he said. Confirming that the state government had observed some lapses that gave rise to the negative comments about the distribution on some social media platforms, Sanwo-Olu assured the residents that the problems identified were being addressed and the distribution strategies being fine-tuned.

He appealed to the residents to remain confident that the state government was working hard to ensure that the vulnerable benefit from the “laudable” intervention.

PoliticsI Fought COVID-19 With Carrots, Black Seed Oil, Honey, Vitamin C – Makinde by jarawa(op): 6:48am On Apr 07, 2020
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde yesterday revealed that he fought coronavirus with carrots, vitamin C and black seed oil with honey while in isolation.

The governor revealed this in Ibadan yesterday in a telephone interview with an FM radio station. He had last week announced that he was tested positive for the disease and went into isolation. But two days ago, he announced that he had become negative after series of tests. The governor said he only made efforts to boost his immunity and used his time in isolation to regularly exercise on the treadmill.

Makinde said in boosting his immunity to fight coronavirus, he consumed vitamin C, carrots and black seed oil mixed with honey. He said: “My very good friend and brother, Dr Muyideen Olatunji is the one in charge of the primary healthcare for Oyo State. He came to me and said, look, I am going to send to you this black seed oil, it boosts immunity. So, I mixed it with honey and took one teaspoon in the morning and one in the evening. “So, there are local solutions to boost immunity.

Our people should not fret. Just as I’ve been able to get the virus out off my system, so will it be for majority of our people. “I’ve lost a little bit of weight which I think is good. When you’re in isolation, the tendency is just to watch television and eat, I was eating amala. But I was also using the treadmill. It has also been a period to reflect and look at the programmes, policies and the things we want to do for the people of Oyo state and also reflect on how the COVID-19 is going to affect us socially and economically.”

He faulted the Federal Government’s palliative measures in the state, saying “Two days ago in the task force meeting, the Head of Service told me that the conditional cash transfer from the Federal Government would be N20, 000 to people in 10 local government areas of Oyo State and I said, it’s good, but this programme predates this administration and I’ve never been impressed for one day about the way they identified the poorest and the impact.

“They’ve been making noise in the newspapers that they have some items for us. So, I sent the people at the liaison office. First day at the Nigerian Governors’ Forums’ meeting, I was told those items were taken to liaison offices. So, I called the liaison office in Abuja and asked, did you receive anything, but they said no.”

CelebritiesNaira Marley In Our Custody, To Be Charged Tomorrow – Police by jarawa(op): 8:20pm On Apr 06, 2020
The Police in Lagos state on Monday said the ‘Tesumole’ crooner, Azeez Fashola, popularly called Naira Marley, is now in its custody and would be charged to court tomorrow. Police spokesman in the state, DSP Bala Elkana, in a statement, confirmed that Naira Marley “is now in Police custody,” adding that “he will also be charged to Court for violating the restriction orders.” Daily Trust reports that a chief Magistrate Court sitting in Ogba, Lagos had sentenced Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele Bello and her hubby, Abdulrasheed Bello, to a 14-day community service each for flouting the state government’s lockdown order.

Akindele-Bello, popularly called Jenifa, was charged alongside her husband for organising a birthday party with more than 20 persons in attendance contrary to the social distancing order by the Federal and Lagos State governments. The party had in attendance some of her friends including Naira Marley.

Elkana said: “Azeez Fashola a.k.a Naira Marley is now in Police custody. He will also be charged to Court for violating the restriction orders. “The Command has launched a manhunt for the remaining persons who attended the party. “The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Hakeem Odumosu psc, expressed his profound gratitude to Lagosians and other well-meaning Nigerians that speak up against the violations. Together we can stop the spread of COVID-19.”

Daily Trust reports that Chief Magistrate Yewande Aje-Afunwa had on Monday also ordered Akindele-Bello and her hubby, Abdulrasheed Bello also known as JJC Skillz to pay N100,000 fine each and also asked them to be kept in compulsory self-isolation for 14 days. The Court handed down the judgement after the couple pleaded guilty to a one-count criminal charge of violating the law restricting movement in Lagos state.

Before the court sentence on Monday, Nigerians on social media, especially Instagram and Twitter, had blasted Akindele-Bello and other attendees for violating the government’s lockdown order.

The 18-member team of Chinese experts will be arriving soon with “globally scarce supplies” in the fight against the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). This is coming days after the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) rejected the invitation by the Federal Government of a Chinese medical team to help Nigeria in its coronavirus response. Dr Osagie Ehanire, Minister of Health, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja, at the Presidential Taskforce (PTF), briefing on COVID-19 in the country.

“On Friday, April 3, I announced that a team of Chinese medical experts will arrive. They are expected to arrive Nigeria in a few days with a consignment of globally scarce medical supplies, to augment government efforts and build capacity to contain the COVID-19 outbreak.

“The donation by Chinese Companies in Nigeria, includes Personal Protective Equipment, PPE, medical consumables, over one million surgical masks for health workers and even ICU ventilators, valued at over 100,000 dollars, all sourced in the face of global scarcity of these items. “In addition, Chinese medical experts, comprising doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians and public health managers will share their knowledge, skills and real-life experience of fighting COVID-19 with Nigerian personnel to strengthening management of COVID-19 cases, especially with regard to critical care,” he said. Ehanire said that this initiative would greatly build the capacity of hard-working and resourceful Nigerian Healthcare workers at the forefront of fighting COVID-19.

“The much needed PPEs and masks will protect our frontline workers and mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the line of duty. “We have a window of opportunity to strengthen our own response mechanism through lessons learned from any country that has had the experience and can provide hands-on demonstration of dealing with the outbreak and give the Nigerian clinical workforce the opportunity to share global best practices,” he explained. The minister disclosed that the government has also identified additional treatment centres.

PoliticsOsun Releases 110 Ivorian Returnees After 7 Days In Isolation by jarawa(op): 6:56am On Apr 06, 2020
Some sent to Abia, Imo, Delta, Edo, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo Discharges index coronavirus case The Osun State Government on Saturday released from the isolation centre, 110 of the 127 persons that arrived the state from Ivory Coast on March 28. The returnees were released to join their families, barely one week after they had been isolated in Ejigbo Local Government Area of the state.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has a guideline of 14-day isolation for returning travellers from high risk countries with ongoing community transmission as well as anyone that has been in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19. Addressing reporters in Osogbo yesterday, Governor Gboyega Oyetola explained that the 110 returnees, who were released, had tested negative for coronavirus; and the remaining 17, positive.

The governor said those who tested positive were receiving treatment and were in good condition. He also disclosed that the index coronavirus case in the state had recovered and been discharged. Governor Oyetola noted that the 127 returnees were from different parts of the country. He said Osun State saved Nigeria from a major disaster by ensuring that on their arrival in Nigeria, the returnees were not allowed to go straight to their respective states. He said: “Upon profiling, we realised that many of the returnees are from different states. For instance, two of them are from Abia State. But we took responsibility and treated all of them.

“It would have been disastrous if the 127 people were allowed to move to their various states and mix with people in their respective communities when they came into the country. “Of the 127 isolated and tested returnees, 17 tested positive for the virus; while 110 returned negative. Of the 17, we also have persons from other states. “The 110 whose results came back negative have been released to join their families.

Among them are: eleven to Oyo State, two are going to Lagos State, One to Ogun State, three each to Edo and Abia states, four to Delta State and one to Imo State while 85 will remain here in Osun”. He added that those who tested negative to the virus and released to join their families had been advised to observe all the prescribed safety and preventive measures “and to call our help lines if they start to feel unwell.” He said one of the infected patients, who earlier absconded from the facility and was later captured, did not mingle with residents. Oyetola said: “That patient that left our facility in Ejigbo couldn’t infect anyone because the people of the community shut their doors against her.

They didn’t allow her to enter their homes. That was why it was easy to apprehend and return her to the treatment facility.” The spokesman of the governor, Ismail Omipidan, later told our correspondent the returnees travelled from Abidjan by road and had already spent 10 days on the journey before they arrived in Osun Meanwhile, the governor also said yesterday the lockdown in the state might be extended if necessary, appealing to the people to endure. He said the 21-member relief committee he set up was working on modalities for the distribution of relief materials to the people of the state.

The governor debunked the rumour that federal government had released N5bn to Osun to manage the COVID-19 crisis, saying “ I wish I could have that. But I don’t have it. I’m just hearing about it”.

PoliticsOyetola: Osun May Extend COVID-19 Lockdown by jarawa(op): 10:22pm On Apr 05, 2020
Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola, on Sunday said the lockdown in the state owing to COVID-19 may be extended for another two weeks, if necessary. He disclosed that 109 out of the 127 Abidjan returnees quarantined and tested to determine their status have been released from the isolation centre. The governor said one of the first two cases in the state has fully recovered, also tested negative twice and have been released. Speaking in Osogbo on Sunday, Oyetola said the 109 returnees tested negative to Coronavirus and that the remaining 18 that tested positive are receiving treatment and are in good condition.

Oyetola said the lockdown in the state may be extended if necessary as he appealed to the people of Osun to endure the lockdown. The governor said the 21-member relief committee he set up was working on modalities for the distribution of relief materials to the people of the state. The governor said one of the infected patients who absconded from the facility did not mingle with the residents, adding that there’s no fear that the patient infected anyone within the period she left the facility. The governor said, “that patient that left our facility in Ejigbo couldn’t infect anyone because the people of the community shut their doors against her. They didn’t allow her to enter their homes. That was why it was easy to apprehend and return her to the treatment facility.” Oyetola said the 127 returnees were from different parts of the country and Osun saved Nigeria from major disaster by ensuring that the 127 returnees did not go to their respective state.

“Upon profiling, we realised that many of the returnees are from different states. For instance, two of them are from Abia state. But we took responsibility and treated all of them. “It would have been disastrous if the 127 people were allowed to move to their various states and mix with people in their respective communities when they came into the country”, he added. Oyetola debunked the rumour that the federal government has released N5billion to Osun to manage COVID-19, saying “I wish I could have that. But I don’t have it. I’m just hearing about it”.

The governor urged the federal government to assist Osun in its efforts to prevent the further spread of the disease. Meanwhile, the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi has debunked the insinuation that there was panic in his domain when the Iwo indigenes among the Abidjan returnees that were released from the isolation were reintegrated with their relatives. He said the returnees who are indigenes of Iwo were welcomed home and received with joy. He commended the state government for the proactive steps taken to prevent the spread of the virus in the state.

PoliticsCOVID-19: PDP Directs Members To Scale Up Personal Interventions by jarawa(op): 9:58pm On Apr 04, 2020
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has directed its members across the country to intensify their efforts in providing assistance to vulnerable Nigerians in their neighborhood to further mitigate the socio-economic impact of the COVID-19 lockdown directives. The PDP also asked the federal government to bring in the hands used in winning the battle against the Ebola virus disease as well as commission indigenous manufacturers, especially auto and equipment producers, to concert effort towards production of ventilators and other equipment needed in the fight against the pandemic.

The PDP in a statement on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan also called on more Nigerians to join public-spirited individuals and groups in extending assistance to vulnerable citizens in the overall effort to contain and check the spread of the pandemic in the country. The PDP said its call is against the backdrop of the failure of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration “to shelve its greed and corruption and make adequate provisions for social palliatives and other panaceas to Nigerians, despite the immense resources at its disposal.”

Stating that its position is also in line with its manifesto and guiding principles to ensure the security, wellbeing and happiness of all citizens, irrespective of creed, ethnicity and political persuasion, the PDP called on all Nigerians to look beyond primordial considerations and join forces to defeat the virus. “The party therefore urges Nigerians to use this time to further display their spirit of brotherly care by assisting vulnerable persons around them particularly the aged, the unemployed as well as individuals and families whose means of livelihood had been crippled for the restriction directives.

“Furthermore, the PDP laments as worrisome, that at a time as this, the APC and its government would remain lethargic and allow sheer incompetence, greed, avarice and primitive corruption to continue to constrict it into unnecessary parochialism in the handling of effort against the spread of COVID-19 in our country. “Our party also bemoans the lack of accountability and the manifest sleaze in the disbursement of financial palliatives with allegations of diversion of billion of naira to private purses to the detriment of poor Nigerians. Indeed, such is not the way to go,” the PDP said.

“The party therefore urged the Federal Government to be transparent and involve more capable Nigerian medical experts, researchers as well as equipment manufacturers to assist in checking the spread of the pandemic in our country,” the party said.

HealthLessons And ‘gains’ From COVID-19 by jarawa(op): 6:50am On Apr 04, 2020
With over two hundred thousand cases of covid-19 in the United States of America and over one hundred thousand each in Italy and Spain, Coronavirus disease cannot, for now, be said to be on the decline. Even in Nigeria, the discovery of 43 new positive cases on Wednesday April 1, 2020 which brought the total number of cases in Nigeria on that day to 179 does not suggest that the disease has slowed down from spreading. Unless the situation that prompted total lockdown imposed on two states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) improves in the next 48 hours, the window created for people to move out of the lockdown for some hours may have to be closed. As we strive to cope with total or partial lockdown and other measures put in place to restrict movement or enforce social distancing, the stay-at-home order provides us with an opportunity to appreciate the immediate lessons and unforeseen ‘gains’ availed by Covid-19. Parents, children, women, students and religious men have all had their respective share of the out-of-the-way ‘gains’ offered by Covid-19 in Nigeria. Some of the opportunities provided for accessing these ‘gains’ are ‘timely’ to their beneficiaries. For instance, individuals who hitherto had little or no time for body exercise now have opportunity to create enough time for physical exercise on a daily basis.

As we grow older with greater family, community or workplace responsibilities, many people have little time to engage in physical exercises, which the body needs in order to keep fit and sound. For most low and middle classes of Nigerians, the time for siesta and resting is not on the list of their daily routine because they use most part of the day hustling to keep their head afloat the stormy sea of survival. Covid-19 has implicitly opened a very wide door for such rest even though many of those who need this rest are the same people critically complaining to Government to relax the lockdown. Well, we are at liberty as a country to choose between enforcing lockdown in order to kick coronavirus out of the country or relaxing or allowing free movement of people to empower the disease to spread at a rate it desires. Young children who for sometime have not enjoyed adequate attention from their working mothers are now enjoying the long hours of unbroken company of their mothers. Working or business schedules have always alienated children of working mothers from the love, care and attention a child deserves from his mother. Students whose examinations were approaching but yet had so much to cover on their own can take advantage of the lockdown offered by the fight against Covid-19 and finish up any outstanding assignments. They can also use the period to cover every aspect of their respective course outlines. Such students would now have no excuse to fail or perform poorly.

Perhaps, women are the greatest beneficiaries from the lockdown order that has been on for some days (or weeks in some parts of the country). Women have ceased to hear their husbands citing ‘meetings’ as responsible for their habitual late return from office. Some women now have their once-missing right to their husband’s company restored by the lockdown. The stay-at-home measure has incidentally brought couples with soured relationship closer. It has also helped to further strengthen the relationship that exist between siblings in family. The closure of bars and drinking joints have equally aided a reduction in the consumption of alcohol. The restriction of movement should have generally reduced crime rate, and by extension, adultery and fornication. Muslims who before now were constrained with time for devotions should now have more time to spend in the worship of their Creator.

Lockdown is an opportunity to engage in more acts of worship with a view to reaping more reward and getting closer to the Creator of heavens and earth. These acts of devotion may include recitation of the Holy Qur’an. More people should be able to cover larger portions of the holy Qur’an in their routine recitations. Many of us have, either individually or collectively, personally or officially, planned activities for the days or weeks that are now been observed in lockdown. “Man proposes”, they say, “but God disposes”.

All the meetings, workshops, seminars, conference, lectures and public presentations planned many weeks or months earlier have given way for the enforcement of lockdown against the spread of COVID-19. Allah (SWT) states in Qur’an 76:30 “But ye will not except as Allah wills for Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom”. Similarly, Allah (SWT) admonishes us in Qur’an 18:23-24 “Do not say ‘I shall do so and so tomorrow’; without adding ‘if Allah wills’; and called thy lord to mind when thou forgets ….”.

Another lesson from the outbreak of pandemic COVI-19 is that Allah (SWT) does as He pleases. The deadly disease started from a people with better hygiene habit and state-of-the-art facilities to tackle or cope with the epidemiological nature of the disease compared to what obtains, for example, in African countries; sparing the African continent from the kind of ravage Europe and America is passing through. That’s the will of God. Emergencies and bizarre situations such as the one availed by the COVID-19 pandemic provides opportunity for believers to strengthen their faith in the omnipotence of Allah (SWT).

The entire humanity in spite of all that Allah has bestowed on mankind including intelligence, knowledge, wisdom and authority over physical environment, man is today standing in dire need of divine intervention over COVID-19. As ordinary as the name sounds, coronavirus which is just one of the diseases created to try us, is a phenomenon that draws attention, particularly of those who doubt the temporary nature of this world, to the fact that it costs the Creator of the heavens and the earth nothing to bring this planet to an end at any day or time he wishes. If Allah were to react to our individual and collective acts of transgression and disobedience, He (SWT) would have perished the world with a plague that is more or less deadlier than COVID-19.

However, He (SWT) decides to give us respite, in spite of our sins, until we are assembled before Him on the Day of Reckoning. Allah (SWT) states in Qur’an 16:61 “If Allah were to punish men for their wrong-doing, He would not leave (on the earth) a single living creature, but He gives them respite for a stated term…..” COVID-19 is shaking humanity; sending tens thousands to their early graves in few hours, prompting the shutting down of geographical borders and threatening national, regional as well as global economies with recession. With the statistics of new cases still on a rise on daily basis, we have no reason to relax in our individual prayers of seeking refuge in Allah (SWT), requesting Him to intervene between humanity and COVID-19. May Allah (SWT) protect us against covid-19 and guide us to conquer its epidemiological strength, amin.

PoliticsCovid-19: Okowa, Omo-agege, Keyamo Call For Probe Into Pessu Killing by jarawa(op): 11:34am On Apr 03, 2020
Delta state governor Ifeanyi Okowa, deputy senate president Ovie Omo-Agege and labour minister Festus Keyamo have called for a thorough investigation into the killing of a 28-year-old Joseph Pessu in Warri on Thursday. Pessu, an Itsekiri youth, was reportedly killed by a soldier of a team enforcing the COVID-19 lockdown directive of the state government in Warri on Thursday The State Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu said the state government has sent a delegation to the deceased family to condole with them over the loss of their son and contacted the military to investigate. Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area in Delta State, Michael Tidi, said videos circulating on social media about the killing were concocted to embarrass Warri.

Omo-Agege condemned the alleged gruesome killing of Joseph Pessu by men of the Nigerian Army enforcing the stay at home order of the Delta State Government. Keyamo called the incident “disturbing, barbaric and high-handedness on the part of the men of the armed forces.” Eyewitness account said the soldier shot Joseph Pessu dead after a hot chase as he failed to stop when he was flagged down by a combined team of security operatives, who mounted barricade at Ugbuwangue, Warri South Council Area.

The deceased, who had abandoned the deflated car and ran into a nearby bush, was pursued by the killer soldier and shot him in the waist first to demobilise him, before another direct aim on his chest that killed him on the spot.

A military source, however claimed the soldiers suspected the deceased was an armed robber going by the way he drove the car and refused to stop despite the chase. “When the deceased refused to stop, the soldier went after him and shot at one of the rear tyres. The young man continued to drive the car with a burst tyre until he got to Ogunu. He blocked the road with his car, jumped out and started running.

“It was then the soldier assumed him to be a suspect and shot at him. Immediately the incident happened, the soldier drove directly to the Area Command of the Nigeria Police to report himself. “As we speak, the man is devastated, we cannot get information from him, this narrative was given to us by one of the police officers at the checkpoint,” the source concluded”, the source explained.
