Recently, we got an enquiry on the possibility of a third class graduate getting a job in the oil and gas industry. Hello JarusHub, My name is Tosin. I’m from Kwara State. I messed up big time while studying Civil Engineering in one of Nigeria’s second generation universities. By bagging a THIRD CLASS degree. A couple of factors contributed to it, but those are just mere excuses. The bottom line is that I messed my life up. But I know it’s never too late, no matter how late, to start a positive journey of progress. That’s where I need your candid opinion. I want to still get an oil and gas job. Everybody I talked to has said it is not even remotely possible, but something within me tells me it’s still possible. So, tell me, is it still possible to get an oil and gas job? If yes, what are the action steps you’ll require of me to take to move close to my goal. Thanks and God bless. Tosin Dear Tosin, First, I have always said that the Oil & Gas industry is not the only industry and the fixation of our graduates on the sector is a bit misplaced. This I discussed extensively in this article I wrote months back. That said, there is nothing wrong in seeking to get job there. Now, to your question: the answer is YES. There is no rule that says a third class graduate cannot get job in the oil industry. There are definitely third class graduates there. But the challenge: it is a highly competitive industry where best graduates from best schools compete. Herein lies the issue. At entry level, companies specify the acceptable class of degree, and, unfortunately, for almost 100% of them, third class is hardly included. In fact, it is only in very few cases that the boundary is extended to second class lower. This is even the shortlisting process, before the competition for place by way of tests and interviews begins. At experienced level position, class of degree hardly matters, so that may be one possible route. Yet, I wont say you can’t get job in the industry despite this deficit. There is nothing that is impossible. Few as they may be, I’m sure there are third class grads in the industry, so that’s why I said yes, you can. I have mentioned the experienced hire route, which I must say, is also a tight route except you’re very exceptional where you were coming from or you’re headhunted. There is also the contract route. Some third party contractors provide contract staff to oil companies, and the oil companies hardly check their qualifications, since they relate with their contractors (employers) directly and relationship is not that of employee. Those contract manpower suppliers are not so strict in their qualifications pegging, since they are recruiting as contract staff, so maybe they consider third class grads too. After years of experience as contract staff, your experience and network in the industry may be useful in landing your permanent job in an oil company, disregarding your academic deficit. Finally, don’t be fixated with the oil industry, as even first class grads are not guaranteed place. Extend your search. http://www.jarushub.com/with-my-third-class-degree-can-i-get-job-in-an-oil-company/ cc: Lalasticlala & Mynd44.

3, INCREASES YOUR CHANCES OF EMPLOYED Being multilingual increases your chances of employability. If you plan to work for a multinational company, where relocation or expansion to other markets is unavoidable, learning a new language gives you an advantage over the rest. For instance, in very critical economic cases in the past, a lot of companies relocated or reduced their employees. When this happens, candidates who have knowledge of bilingual language will earn certain immunity towards more pay checks that can help them in their work process. The demand for workers who are bilingual (speakers of languages other than English and native dialects) is constantly on the rise in Nigeria. 4, INCREASED EARNINGS It will be shocking to some by the huge number of employers who will be eager to offer you a higher amount for your certified skills in a foreign language. If you do not speak two languages, not to worry, just show some interest and some organisations will pay you to learn a second language. There are tales of many companies in France, Spain and the Middle East doing this. They are more than willing to compensate people who work with them with higher remuneration in exchange for their rare language skills. WHEN AND HOW TO START? The best period to pick up a new language different from your mother tongue is when you are still a child. During that time, your LAD (Language Acquisition Device) is at its best. The older you become, the harder it is for you to learn a new language. Alternatively, you can enrol in a language course while still in secondary school or the university. Although learning a foreign language can be quite tasking on your brain, learning languages like Norwegian, Japanese or German which are among some of the toughest languages to learn is not advisable for beginners. However, every language can be learned, you just need to be determined and persevere. http://www.jarushub.com/being-multilingual-how-this-can-help-boost-your-career/

Balogun Owomide The past few years have witnessed an increase in people’s desire to learn a new language. Companies and many other corporate bodies now place a high premium on multilingual individuals because of the numerous roles they can play in an ever increasing community. This makes a lot of (un)employed people pick up interest in learning a new language. It is true that learning a new language especially as a lazy adult is a painful and slow process. It’s more excruciating as you age even more. HOW BEING MULTILINGUAL CAN BOOST YOUR CAREER 1, A NEW LEVEL OF INCREASED BRAIN ACTIVITY The first advantage you derive from learning a new language is that it improves the functionality of your mind through training. Your mind then learns to identify and react to foreign environments at a better and faster process. It also helps you boost your ability to deal with other problems of life in the same manner. Researchers have proved that those who learn more than one or more languages are far better and creative at solving real life and complex problems than those who do not. Being multilingual also helps your brain become healthier. York University recently conducted a research on the effects of dementia and Alzheimer’s; the test of these patients revealed quite a good number of surprising facts. The research showed that, bilingual patients had a significant delay in the onset of the disease when compared to patients with monolingual abilities.” 2, MAKES YOU LANGUAGE SMART Do you know that when you live with bilingual families, you develop an astonishing ability to differentiate between languages that you’ve never heard or understand before? This is because the human brain gets exposed to different sounds from a variety of languages. As you learn various languages, your attention gets drawn to the fundamentals of the target language such as sentence structure, conjugations and grammar. Through this, you become more aware of the language and the proper way to structure it. Although these skills are often overlooked, they will help you become more language smart and a better communicator. http://www.jarushub.com/being-multilingual-how-this-can-help-boost-your-career/

luap1990:Hello Luapa1990, Congratulations! You have two offers on your table. Problem is making a choice, a problem most Nigerians will like. However, as any problem, it requires a solution. A part-time lecturing job in a state owned polytechnic & a banking job. Question is: What are your career plans? Does the part-time job align with them assuming you intend becoming an academic? You mentioned the banking job as a full-time job. What level? Let's assume it is middle level, what bank? Remuneration wise, a middle-level pay in a bank is more than that of a STATE OWNED polytechnic and it is professionally better than a PART-TIME job. Yes, the banking industry is a volatile one, but so is your PART-TIME lecturing role. However, unlike the lecturing role, you get more tasks; training; exposure; better remuneration; a good brand and profile on your CV (for future exploits); more & better perquisites; knowledge etc. We doubt a PART-TIME role in a STATE OWNED polytechnic will afford you those benefits. Furthermore, with your experience in the banking industry (assuming you stay for three years), you can move into the academic sector at a higher position than if you try the opposite. Additionally, assuming your first degree is different from the discipline you intend lecturing in your PART-TIME role, you can switch to a discipline with a background in the banking industry due to your experience. Finally, it is your prerogative to choose an offer. But remember, you have a FULL-TIME role in the banking industry vs a PART-TIME position in a STATE-OWNED polytechnic. We wish you the very best in your decision making. P.S. There was pandemonium at the offices of the top oil company, Addax Petroleum, today as workers began indefinite strike action. At the Ozumba Mbadiwe head office of the company, the CEO, Colin Klapa met the shock of his life as he was not allowed into the office by protesting employees who locked the gates to the company. Other senior management staff were also refused access into the company premises. The strike was called by employees under the aegis of Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) with the support of some management staff, over what they described as breach of Collective Bargaining Agreement reached with the union. The Union has earlier given the management ultimatum to honour the agreement or incur its wrath. According to the union secretary general, the following are the key reasons for the industrial action:- - unilateral interpretation of the subsisting collective bargaining agreement (CBA) reached between the union and management in August 2014 on issues bordering on activation of non-statutory remunerations to members. - selective, targeted victimisation of union leaders identified as not working in line with management interest; stagnation of some staff for between 10 to 12 years, and discriminatory promotion of workers. - allegation of culture of impunity against some of the union officials - victimisation of union leaders, punitive transfers, and selective performance appraisal The company has not officially reacted to this issue. Addax petroleum is one of the Top 10 oil producers in Nigeria, the 2nd largest in Cameroun and the 4th largest in Gabon. It is a subsidiary of SINOPEC, one of the state-owned oil companies of China. Addax Nigeria has been having running issues in the last decade leading to massive disengagement of their contract employees about 4 years ago. It has also been in running court battle with Federal Government of Nigeria over some reporting issues. Source: http://www.opinions.ng/addax-workers-begin-strike-lock-ceo/

By Uchechi Moses During the past years, there has been a rise in the entrepreneurial fever – where everyone desires to become one. There is nothing wrong with entrepreneurship as it spurs investment, create jobs and wealth. The top firms in Nigeria and globally were founded by entrepreneurs. However, when one hears/reads statements such as “create a job”, “don’t be a slave”, “a salary received extends your prison term”, “you cannot be rich as an employee”, “you are wasting time enriching another individual”, “your salary is a bribe given to you to forget about your dreams”, “people who receive salaries are slaves” and the one I consider the most ridiculous – “I don’t want to work for someone”. There are many of such thoughts - which are flawed – parading our cyber space about entrepreneurship. Firstly, entrepreneurship goes beyond “buying and selling or opening of a shop”. It requires developing new ideas, problem solving, tenacity, innovative spirit etc. At most we have more business wo(men) than entrepreneurs in Nigeria. Delving into entrepreneurship requires managerial knowledge, raising of capital, and most importantly, possessing the idea. Yes, you might have the idea, but managing an enterprise goes beyond just having it in your head or on paper. Secondly, the statement that you cannot be rich as an employee is false. This is because being “rich” is subjective. To Dangote, Mark Zuckerberg is richer than him, to Zuck, Bezos is richer. Our flawed entrepreneurs forget that not everyone desires to be rich. Yes! As odd as it sounds, there are persons who are satisfied with receiving a salary at a stipulated time and don’t want to be rich. They need the environment to realise their dreams (yes, they have dreams too), and become successful. On its own, being successful is relative. For some, it simply means a having a regular 9 – 5 job that offers the comfort of a home, car(s), money to sponsor their kids to good schools and a retirement fund. Living their life ‘one step at a time”. They should not be criticised for this choice – which is their prerogative. Also, not everyone can be rich as it’d be Zimbabwean – economically. It is unnatural. One can live a comfortable life as a salaried employee, yes, you not might be rich as billionaires on Forbes. However, not everyone can. The CEO Accenture Nigeria, Niyi Yusuf, is a salaried employee, but lives a comfortable life by all ramifications. Same can be said about the Kemi Onabanjo of McKinsey & Co. Or are these individuals unsuccessful? There are many, salaried and successful. Their dreams are being realised at where they work. Furthermore, there is a striking thing about these flawed entrepreneurs’ thoughts. This is because with the way they sing, talk, write and blog about their fellow citizens running towards corporate jobs. One would believe there is a country where entrepreneurs are more than employees. There is no country where entrepreneurs outnumber employees. Think about it. Is there any country where we have more “job creators” than “job seekers”? No. In developed societies, people discuss more about gaining employment than becoming entrepreneurs. You see data of employment figures being released monthly, quarterly, biannual or annually. Countries nay politicians are proud when the unemployment rate drops. Also, renowned MBA programs have the rates of being employed after graduation as one of their selling points. Yes, MBA students are taught modules of entrepreneurship by top class professors and invited to symposiums on entrepreneurship. Yet, the vast majority of MBA grads get back into paid employment than entrepreneurship. Which reiterates my point about no place, globally, are there more entrepreneurs than employees. Yes, entrepreneurship creates jobs, but not the way it is talked about in Nigeria. As if people won’t eventually manage the enterprise. Fresh graduates in Nigeria are being told to “create jobs’ immediately they leave school. Is there anything wrong with this statement? No, emphatically. However, when that becomes the only line being drummed into their ears, it becomes a problem. Inasmuch as there are folks who desire being entrepreneurs, there is a sub-set that will delve into it (entrepreneurship) after working with a firm/individual for a period of time. Not graduating today, and becoming an entrepreneur tomorrow. Just like that? And you expect everyone to jump into it? This is because everyone is the same, right? Check out the statistics of top entrepreneurs in Nigeria, we have more successful entrepreneurs who worked for a while in different firms and positions before creating their enterprise. And you know one fascinating thing about these entrepreneurs? They did and do not denigrate paid employment. Neither did they vow never to work for someone. Why denigrate something you will have in your firm? Or are you aspiring to employ slaves? It shows the difference between flawed and authentic entrepreneurial thoughts. On the other hand, this writer has managed his family hospitality business, and I witnessed how it is to run one in Nigeria. The attempts by employees to pilfer to clients not understanding why prices are increased to fuel prices being increased arbitrarily to generator maintenance. Sometimes you begin to wonder, why not just work, and earn money steadily? Why stress yourself? With the experience gained, I find it difficult to start an enterprise in Nigeria. No doubt, the benefits are there – a huge market. However, it gives me sleepless nights. A factor our flawed entrepreneurs don’t understand is the country they are in. Nigeria is one of the difficult places to run a business globally. From employees versed in pilfering to highly punitive taxes to poor infrastructure (especially the Internet), and most obvious - non availability of electricity (2 – 5 hours daily supply of electricity is not electricity to me). Entrepreneurship goes beyond “not being a slave”. Folks recommend entrepreneurship as the quick pill to our high unemployment rate. However, I posit that availability of 24/7 electricity will reduce unemployment to its barest minimum. Then again, even in countries with constant electricity, there is still unemployment – which is not unique to Nigeria. Finally, peoples’ decisions should not be distorted by mere trite songs about entrepreneurship. Question is: If everyone decides to own a business, who will work in these firms? Slaves? If you desire to be an entrepreneur, fine and good. It is commendable. Whether you desire to be self-employed or being in paid employment is totally your prerogative. Do not denigrate others’ duties because they don’t fall in line with yours. People should be given the support to pursue their dreams as long as they don’t commit a crime. We are different and this makes us unique. http://www.jarushub.com/is-entrepreneurship-overrated/ |
