* Ife Students' Union are the most vibrant. Indeed Ife is a training ground for fearless activists that later in life shake the country: See the list: Femi Falana, Justice Oyewole that sentenced Bode George, Mike Ozekhome, Bamidele Aturu, Opeyemi Bamidele, Mamora Olohunnimbe, Olaolu Alli etc. *Ife students gave Gani Fawehinmi SENIOR ADVOCATE OF THE MASSES honour in 1988. It became a nationally quoted award. What does that tell you? Ife awards are not just mushroom awards some students just give. It is nationally recognized. *Gani Fawehinmi, Nigeria's most respected progressive said on his death bed: "If University of Ife wants my corpse, give it to them". What does that tell you? Why did he choose Ife, and not UI, his alma mater? No, there msut be something great in that school. Your guess is as good as mine: Ife represents his ideals. * Ife is the most beautiful campus in Nigeria. A serene environment is conducive for learning. *It may interest you to know that the now common 'GREAT this, GREAT that' started with Ife in the mid 1970s. Today every glorified secondary school copies Ife as Great X, Great Y, but the real Nigerians know who has the 'copyright' *There is this inbuilt inoppressibility and unsurpressibility among Ife students and products. They know their rights, go any extent to defend it. Authorities think twice before coming up with one policy. *Ife is the most progressive university in Nigeria. It is only in Ife that a fumbling serving minister with all the security details will be denied access to University campus(Bayo Ojo, 2005); it is only in Ife that a presidential candidate with anti- students antecedents will be told top his face (Obasanjo 1998); it is only in Ife that a powerful head of government agency will be drilled by students, without fears as to his activities (Nuhu Ribadu, 2007) etc. * The only Nobel Laurette in Nigeria won it as Ife lecturer -Wole Soyinka. *Ife is the only University in Nigeria whose students are capable of influencing national policies. Examples: i, Ife/Ibadan expressway was dualized in the early 1990s due to agitations of Ife students after an accident claiming students' lives; ii , Ife students led the Ali-Must-Go struggle of 1978 against FG's obnoxious policies on education; iii The national clampdown on cultism in all Nigerian institutions was triggered by Ife students in 1999. Great Ife, I love you |

Onetime Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said governors were the reason former President, Goodluck Jonathan, could not save for the future. Okonjo-Iweala in an interview with Le Monde said “some economists are very concerned for Nigeria, which could greatly suffer from the fall in oil prices. Others say the contrary, that its economy is strong enough to turn the corner. “Both are right. But one thing saddens me. When I was finance minister the first time, the volatility of oil prices, and therefore state resources, cost at least three points of growth in the country. “We then established a stabilisation mechanism and opened an account for the oil surplus, which posted up to $22 billion. In 2008, when prices fell from 148 to $38 a barrel, no one had heard of Nigeria because the country was able to tap into this fund. And that, I am very proud [of]. “When I returned to the department in 2011, there remained only $4 billion on this account while the price of oil was very high! I tried again to put money aside. The president agreed, but the governors did not accept. “I suffered a lot of attacks from them and now that the country would really need this account, these same people accuse me of not having saved. If Nigeria had been more careful, we would not be here today. It hurts me. We have the mechanism, we had the experience, but we were prevented to act.” https://www.today.ng/news/national/103037/why-couldnt-save-under-jonathan-okonjo-iweala |
Pope Francis put his shoulder to the doors of the Catholic Church and shoved them open a little wider Friday, calling for the church to be more tolerant in practice while not changing any official doctrines. He urged priests around the world to be more accepting of gays and lesbians, divorced Catholics and other people living in what the church considers "irregular" situations. "A pastor cannot feel that it is enough simply to apply moral laws ... as if they were stones to throw at people's lives," Francis writes in a sweeping paper outlining his stance on family matters. He urges more common sense and less unthinking following of rules. http://edition.cnn.com/2016/04/08/europe/vatican-pope-family/index.html |

ademoladeji:And what you don't know is that the Union became stronger after Afrika's death in July 10, 1999. I don't know where u get your 2003 from, however, the union happened to prove its vibrancy after 2003. Remember, Akinola Saburi who was the president of the union went to testify against oyinlola in the court after it was reported that he recorded a total vote of over 30,000 in Ife campus. After 2003, many struggles have been done. Increment in school fees has been fought against. There had been protest against poor learning condition. There had been agitation against mass failure of students (Tsunami). There had been protest against unfavourable government policies. Great Ife Union is more than just an association, we are always scientific in our doings. |
May the best candidate win |

Donnetimmy:*In Great Ife, we don't have Students' Union Government, we have Students' Union. This is because we believe the union is strict for the students and controlled by the students. *The Congress of Great Ife students is the highest decision making body of the union, which means what the students say is the final. *The SRC is always there to checkmate the excesses of the executives. *The finance of the union are accounted for at the beginning and end of every session. *Great Ife Students' Union is the only Students' union that influences national issues. Eg, the Ibadan-Ife express road was dualized after agitation from Great Ife students. *Great Ife Union gave the late Gani Fawehinmi the Senior Advocate of the Masses (SAM) when he was denied SAN. *Great Ife Students' Aluta is always scientific. We have a way of making our grievances known without spoiling a single flower in d school. |

My suspension, a parody of justice and fairness, is a development which consistently keeps me perturbed of what the future holds for our dear country and the institutions which should inculcate the value of patriotism, spirit of social responsibility and virtue of political consciousness but have decided to breed men who are coerced to strictly adhere to the status quo even in the face of high moral and institutional decadence. I’m more curious of this institutional and social decadence than my suspension, as the suspension itself is one of the by-products of oppression and instrumentalities used to silence any voice of progressiveness and activism. Sequel to numerous interventions and appeals from well-meaning Nigerians, great Nigerian students, progressive arms of our community, and the media, the university has decided to reduce the 6 and 4 respective semesters’ suspension of the 3 leaders of the Students’ Union to one semester each and directed us to resume academic activities by Harmattan semester of the 2015/2016 session. Putting issues in the right perspective, November 2015, Great Ife students started a campaign against inimical welfare conditions on campus, an agitation that erupted after several diplomatic approaches had yielded no result. The students and the union have consistently expressed their abhorrence on the collapsing structures, moribund municipal facilities and outdated learning infrastructure through releases, in meetings and even the media before embarking on a one day peaceful lecture boycott which lasted for less than 12hrs. The protest received wide media coverage and the world was aghast at the living condition of students on the Obafemi Awolow University (OAU) campus. The Congress of Students after the boycott directed that further diplomatic approaches be used. This negates the notion that students wanted to disrupt coronation and convocation. The management issued a mid-semester break notification and subsequently suspended the activities of the Students’ Union days after. Union leaders were invited to a panel on the acclaimed assault of a university professor and the aftermath was the suspension of the President, Secretary General and PRO of the Students’ Union. After the suspension, consultations and diplomacy being the first approach to all struggles were still employed to ensure our reinstatement was achieved. This is also in view of ensuring that a stable academic calendar is not jettisoned as we recognize this as another germane interest of students. The list will be too long but it is important to salute the doggedness of Great Ife students who consistently showed support and whose interests remain number one priorities. I must recognize the astute intervention of our most revered Royal Father, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja 11, The Ooni of Ife. Professor YK Yusuf and The Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) OAU branch for their consistent guidance and intervention whose role in our reinstatement cannot be over-emphasized. Leaders of religious and departmental organizations have shown unprecedented concern and have in their respective capacity never stopped offering their support and encouragement. Others include members security agencies who showed restraint, student leadership among the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), and other student leaders. No amount of victimization or criminalization can deter me from my conviction of the essence of affordable qualitative education and a politically conscious students’ body. This will continue to spur me to continually register my abhorrence at all level to government anti-students and anti-education policies and constructively champion a moral course for better welfare condition and human capital development. The struggle continues, the restoration of the Students’ Union activities is a collective responsibility, as students’ freedom of association must not be infringed upon. Students must unionize; we should not think of carrying on without that collective platform. We should demand for the restoration of an independent students’ union through an immediate Student Union election.
