Men who are attracted to women with big butts perhaps do so for a reward of pleasurable sex. But there is more to big butts than meets the eye. Scientists from the University of Oxford have said that women who have more than average backsides often have a higher level of intelligence. The researchers even went as far as saying that children born to women with wider hips are more intelligent than the children of slimmer, less curvy mothers. Beyond that, they claim the lower body fat lowers cholesterol levels and produce sugar metabolising hormones that help to ward off diabetes and heart problems in women with bigger butts, compared to those with slimmer butts. According to them, women with such big butts produce more Omega 3 fats, which catalyse brain development. In a study of more than 16,000 women by the team fromthe Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism led by Prof. Konstantinos Manolopoulos, the women with bigger butts consistently outscored their skinny counterparts on intelligence tests, and children of women with big butts outscored the children of slender mums too. However, the result showed that it was not simply a big butt that indicates a high Intellectual Quotient, but the size of the woman’s hips in relation to the size ofher waist. The researchers said, “The theory behind these findings is that fat stored around the buttocks and thighs is high in omega-3 acids, which promote brain growth, while fat stored around the middle is loaded with omega-6 acids, which just makes the pants too tight. “Part of the nutrients the mother passes down to the baby during pregnancy is the Omega 3 fat, which has been proven to catalyse brain development. “Pear-shaped women have greater reserves of omega-3, which nourishes their brain and is essential to foetal brain development in the third trimester ofpregnancy. To see how the body rates in terms of omega-3, divide the waist size by the hip size. The smaller the answer, the better. “To take this further, one theory that has been posited is that men have a biological urge to have intelligent children, so they respond lustfully to broad-bottomed women without consciously knowing why. According to the report published in the International Journal of Obesity, the lower body – thigh and backside – has a natural protective role, adding that the control of body weight is still the best way to stay healthy. The report notes that it is better for women to have fat at the lower part of the body because it is less harmful and more stable unlike when it is in the stomach where it is more metabolically active, by sending fatty contents throughout the body. In fact, the researchers analysed and compared female belly fat with the legs, hips and buttocks, finding that the fat from the lower body of women prevents the development ofdiabetes. The study, which notes that the number of buttock lift surgeries has increased by 136 per cent from 1997to 2012, did not say whether those with artificial butts would have such benefits. While reacting to the study, an evolutionary psychologist, Dordon Gallup, of the University of Albany, United States, said beyond the intelligence babies (foetal) would tap from their mother during pregnancy, “It is about pairing genes with someone who has genes that code for health, vitality and fertility.” He said, “Men find narrow waists and broad hips attractive and the fat stored in women’s butts, called gluteofemoral fat, has unique long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids that are important for babies’ brain development. “In this area, the fat is likely to be the much touted Omega-3, which could improve the woman’s own mental abilities as well as those of the child during pregnancy. Research shows that as gluteal femoral fat stores go up, so do the cognitive scores of babies born to women with large hips, and not only are babies advantaged, but even the mothers are.” Even if majority of men do not know why they are attracted to larger butts, they are still helplessly attracted to it. The study concluded that, “The explanation lies in omega-3 fatty acids, which are tucked in the hips and thighs and also compose much of the human brain. Girls begin storing these fatty acids below the waist once puberty hits. “Eating more omega-3 while expecting and nursing can contribute to development, but the body prefers its own reserves. We don’t really know how the body decides where to store fat. At the moment, we need to understand more about the mechanisms the body uses. Only then will we be able to take the next step and try to influence this. Commenting on the study, a consultant endocrinologist, Dr. Michael Olamoyegun, pointed out that the more intelligence in women with bigger butts and their offspring is traceable to the presence of Omega H3 in the buttocks, which aids the development ofthe brain. He explained that women with bigger butts tend to have higher percentage of the Omega H3 than women with slimmer butts, adding that most of the Omega H3 that help in the function of the brain (including foetal brain applicable to those who are pregnant) are from the ones deposited in the buttocks and not fromfood. In other words, the Omega H3 deposited in the butts helps the brain development of such a woman with bigger butts and that of the foetus in her womb, if pregnant, compared to the woman with slimmer butts, who has a lesser deposit of Omega H3. Olamoyegun said, “The Omega H3 plays an important role in the development of foetal (baby) brain and the brain of the woman, because it helps in the transmission of neurons of information in the brain. So, if you have bigger butts, you tend to have bigger Omega H3, which helps in the development of the brain and foetal brain. “The majority of the Omega H3 that is used in the transmission of brain neuron and the development of the brain is the one that is deposited in the butts. However, if you get it from the food you eat, such as sea food, it is also deposited, so forwomen who have big butts, they already have large deposition of Omega H3, which helps in intelligence quotient, compared to thinner women. “It also holds for the number of children that the woman gives birth to. The study showed that the first child the woman gives birth to tend to be more intelligent than the successive babies because with repeated pregnancies, the fat in the buttocks tend to go lower and the one in the tummy tend to go higher. Hence, the lower the amount of Omega H3, the lower the foetal development of the brain. In terms of helping to reduce the risk of diabetes and hypertension, he said people who have hypertension or those who are fat tend to have high cholesterol, which blocks the vessel that carries blood round the vessel, making blood flow to be difficult. He explained that Omega H3, which is very high in polyunsaturated fatty acid, reduces the high cholesterol, and gives polyunsaturated cholesterol, which is good for the body. So, in a way, the Omega H3 would reduce the incidence ofdiabetes and hypertension. “It is not that Omega H3 prevents the development of diabetes on its own, but it reduces the high cholesterol, thus, reducing the incidence of diabetes and hypertension. Also, another endocrinologist, Dr. Chidinma Nwatu, said even though she had not read the study, the emphasis should be on the hips and not how much the woman’s behind protrudes because it is scientific to compare the hips and not the butts. She noted that Omega 3 acid as a good fatty acid needed for a lot of body tissues has some benefits it gives to the body when consumed in its natural form. She added that the fatty acid helps to reduce cholesterol, improve glucose metabolism, and that the more the hip the lesser the cardiovascular risk, including diabetes. www.punchng.com/entertainment/saturday-breeze/revealed-why-men-are-helplessly-attracted-to-bigger-butts-study/ |

Nigeria’s most powerful Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has refused to release the much-publicized probe set up to investigate the theft of $20 billion from the country’s treasury through the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). In February 2014,Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who is both Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, told Nigerians that the federal government had appointed independent auditors to look into the books of the NNPC and unravel the huge theft which had been exposed by Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, at that time the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Nigeria's minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Sanusi, who subsequently became Emir of Kano, was booted out of the CBN by President Jonathan for exposing the scandalous graft and misappropriation of funds at the NNPC. Sanusi also exposed the laundering of billions of dollars in revenues that ought to have accrued to the NNPC by shady businessmen close to the president, especially Jide Omokore. Okonjo-Iweala, deflecting criticism, re-affirmed in May that the accounting firm PriceWaterHouse had been hired to probe the allegations and that the report would be ready by the end of November. On December 7, one week after that deadline, SaharaReporters wrote to the minister requesting a copy of the audit. Neither the minister nor her assistant on Media, Paul Nwabikwu, responded to the request. SaharaReporters also contacted PriceWaterHouse global offices in the US to request information about the completion of the audit and to ask for a copy. In a conversation with Steven Silber, who serves as press contact for PWC’s Auditing and Accounting Center for Board Governance, Risk Assurance Services Deals, he requested an email stating our request. We sent that email immediately but Mr. Silber did not respond to it. www.saharareporters.com/2014/12/26/missing-20b-mystery-over-audit-report-nigeria’s-finance-minister-covering-corruption-nnpc . |
former junior defence minister, Musiliu Obanikoro, will be heading back to Abuja as a top cabinet member as part of a deal personally brokered by President Goodluck Jonathan, for Mr. Obanikoro to discontinue his legal challenge of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship primary result for Lagos State, PREMIUM TIMES can confirm. Mr. Obanikoro was one of the biggest casualties of the PDP gubernatorial primaries, after resigning his ministerial position to vie for the party’s ticket in Lagos for the 2015 election. He lost to Jimi Agbaje, a relatively less known candidate, who had the backing of the party’s most powerful leaders in Lagos. Along side Mr. Obanikoro, former ministers Emeka Wogu, Labaran Maku, Onyebuchi Chukwu, and Samuel Ortom, also lost their bids after leaving their posts to contest in their respective states. Mr. Obanikoro rejected the Lagos results and filed a legal challenge against the declaration of Mr. Agbaje as winner, kicking off a row that has the potential to ruin any chances the party may have in snatching Lagos from All Progressives Congress, APC in 2015. The log jam has finally been resolved amicably with the former minister accepting to withdraw his court case, at the same time fully support Mr. Agbaje as the PDP candidate, presidency sources have confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES. On Friday morning, a relaxed and visibly pleased Mr. Obanikoro appeared on Channels Television programme, Sunrise, to explain why he agreed to drop his court case challenging the result. Mr. Obanikoro said he acted in the interest of the party, and reflected on how the party needs a united front to defeat the APC and win Lagos after 15 years. “But as I’ve said to you, we want to win Lagos. And the only way we can win Lagos is if we are united and people see us as being responsible and ready to provide leadership. For 16 years we’ve had a running battle between Lagos and the federal government,” Mr. Obanikoro said. “We want a government in Lagos that will engage the federal government constructively for the good of Lagosians.” He denied agreeing to give up his legal challenge in return for a ministerial appointment, although he quickly added that he would be ready to serve if called upon to do so. “Any time that you are called to come and serve the public, I think it makes sense to accept and do just that. I’m in politics, forgoodness sake, for the good ofour people, and ifan opportunity presents itself forme to come and manage the affairs ofmen and women, why will I turn it down?” he asked. PREMIUM TIMES can confirm that despite his denial, Mr. Obanikoro was given assurances from the highest office in the country that his personal interests would be well taken care of if he dropped his challenge. A source within the presidency, well aware of the negotiations leading to Mr Obanikoro’s decision to back off, said the former subordinate minister was assured by the president that he would be appointed a senior minister in January when the Senate reconvenes. “He reached a deal to be made a full minister in January and to continue holding his position if President Goodluck Jonathan gets re-elected in February,” our source said. Our source also said that Mr. Obanikoro was promised a prominent role in the president’s re-election campaign effort in the South West, especially in Lagos. “We don’t know what that role would be at the moment, but it is definitely not that of actively leading the campaign in the South West since he would have been appointed a minister then but he would definitely play a key role in the President Jonathan’s campaign,” the source added. Part of the terms reached with Mr. Obanikoro was for him to have a say in who becomes Mr. Agbaje’s running mate, as well as the right to choose some of the commissioners in Mr. Agbaje cabinet should he emerge winner of the Lagos gubernatorial election. Our source explained that the deal literally elevated Mr. Obanikoro from being a mere candidate to a power broker in Lagos and to some extent, southwest PDP. “As you can see, he has come out of the deal looking stronger and Bode George and (Adeseye) Ogunlewe are the losers here afterall,” the source said. Bode George, a chieftain of the party, and Adeseye Ogunlewe, a former Minister of Works, are believed to be the power brokers behind the emergence of Mr. Agbaje as the PDP gubernatorial candidate in Lagos. However, they were not at the meetings where the deal was concretised, the source said. During the Sunrise interview, Mr. Obanikoro allayed concerns that the absence of both men may jeopardise the deal in the future saying both men eventually got what they wanted and there was no reason why they should not accept the decision of the party. “I believe Chief Bode George is on holiday somewhere outside Nigeria and I believe that if you look at the convergence there, you will see that all stakeholders particularly the aspirants who were aggrieved… Jimi Agbaje represents Ogunlewe and Bode George’s interest as far as I’m concerned and that is what that is all about and we have all now come together to embrace Jimi Agbaje,” he said. When asked if the absence of Messrs George and Ogunlewe during the negotiation isn’t a sign of trouble, our source said the deal was initiated by the president himself and that there is no way both men, regardless of their influence would dare to overrule the president. “The president is the national leader of the party and no one would want to scuttle a deal he personally brokered.” www.saharareporters.com/2014/12/26/jonathan-reappoint-obanikoro-minister-conceding-defeat-lagos-pdp-governoship-race |

The Nigerian Army on Thursday distanced the Commanding Officerof the 103 Battalion, Lt. Col Anthony Wende, from a petition purportedly written to President Goodluck Jonathan, on why the counter insurgency operations in the North-East had not yielded the desired results. Some online news media recently reported that the commanding officer petitioned the president, where allegation of corruption was said to have been the reason for the prolonged battle against the insurgents. The letter to the president also claimed that the military did not have the requisite weapons to prosecute the current co unter insurgency war against Boko Haram. Addressing a press conference, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations of the 7 Division ofthe Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, Col. Sani Usman, said the Nigerian army had investigated the petition and discovered that the officer was not the author of the letter. He said, “The petition was carefully studied and investigated by the Nigerian Army and as part of this process, forensic analysis by relevant security agencies was carried out. It was discovered that the allegations were spurious and baseless as the commanding officer had nothing to do with the petition. He has therefore been exonerated.” Usman alleged that the petition was aimed at distracting the Army from its fight against terrorism in the country. The Army spokesman said, “We wish to categorically state that the petition is the handiwork of mischief-makers aimed at distracting the 7 Division and indeed the Nigerian Army from its determined efforts at fighting insurgency and terrorism in this nation to a logical and successful conclusion.” He added, “You will recall that the officer’s unit currently plays a vital role in the fight against Boko Haram terrorists in Nigeria. Under his command, the unit, along with others, has been able to deny the terrorists freedom ofaction within their area of operations. “It is out of sheer mischief therefore that someone is trying to ensure that the name of this gallant officer is smeared for inconceivable reasons.” Wende, who was also at the press briefing, denied ever authoring the letter to the president, adding that there was no truth in the report that he was being threatened by the army authorities. www.punchng.com/news/insurgency-commanding-officer-disowns-fraud-petition-to-jonathan/ |
Since the party primaries of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which have thrown up candidates forthe 2015 elections ended, a lot of secret meeting across the political parties have been going on. One of such meetings was the secret meeting between Chief Tom Ikimi, a PDP chieftain and Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State. Recently, Ikimi defected from the APC to the PDP, but his sudden appearance in Government House where he met with Oshiomhole surprised watcher of Edo politics. The chief, popularly referred to as Oduma of Igueben, clad in black trousers, white shirt and a black beret, was seen walking into Oshiomhole’s office at about 4.30p.m. and left at about 6.30p.m. Although Ikimi’s mission was not made public, THISDAY gathered from a source close to the Government House that he was there to push for a come back to the party. After the meeting, the former foreign affairs minister, who apparently did not recognise the presence of journalists, walked straight into his car and zoomed off. www.desertherald.com/ikimi-in-secret-meeting-with-oshiomhole |

The three suspected gun runners of Igbo origin, who were heading to the North from Imo State, were intercepted in Nsukka, Enugu State, by officers and men of the Nigerian Army while travelling in a bus. Items recovered from them include 40 AK47 magazines, 4 boxes of AK47 live ammunition,100 pieces of live cartridges, one piece of Denim Mopol khaki and charms concealed in a cap. One of the army officers who spoke to reporters under anonymity disclosed that a police corporal serving in Imo State Police Command was also involved in the arms running. He said: “When we asked the occupants ofthe vehicle to come down, we discovered a police corporal in uniform among them. FORMER governor of Oyo State, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, has formerly declared for Labour Party (LP). The former governor, who dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alongside thousands of his supporters on Monday evening, at his Bodija residence, said the decision was made based on the demand by his teeming supporters to quit PDP. At an enlarged meeting of stakeholders in Ibadan, some of the leaders of the party, who are sympathetic to his course, said the reason behind the call to quit PDP was basically because of insincerity and injustice. Mr Abraham Ojo, his media aide, in a press statement on behalf of Alao-Akala, said “thousands of supporters of the former governor stormed the Bodija residence to delibrate on the way forward, after the injustice meted to him by the PDP. “After series of meetings and discussions, they all decided to dump the PDP and move to an alternative party, which is Labour Party.” Among the party leaders at the meetings were chief Jacob Adetoro, Chief Adigun Irawo, General Yusuf Braimoh, past commissioners, local government chairmen, among others. They argued that there was no basis for them to remain in PDP, because the party had refused to toe the line of truth. “Everybody in the state knows that Alao-Akala and his supporters are strong pillars that hold the party and if a genuine delegate congress is conducted, Alao-Akala will always win, but since the national secretariat has given in to the manipulations of the minotity in the party, we have no option but to quit,” they said. While debunking insinuations that they participated in PDP primaries, Ojo said Alao-Akala had made his intention to quit the party known since Sunday, after meeting with his teeming supporters in Ogbomoso and later today (Monday) in Ibadan, even before the process started. “It is laughable and ridiculous to say Alao-Akala scored two votes in the primaries he did not even particiapte in. He is a political giant who has been a bride to all political parties in the state since the PDP travails started,” he said. Source: TRIBUNAL Short URL: http://www.osundefender.org/?p=198994 |

A former governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff, widely accused of sponsoring Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria, may be lobbying for the release of the Chad-bound cargo aircraft confiscated in Kano for transporting large consignment of military hardware, PREMIUM TIMES can report today. Ali Modu Sheriff Sahara Reporters Media Sources at the Aminu Kano International Airport, where the plane is currently detained, said Mr. Sheriff visited the Kano airport at about 10 p.m. on Saturday and held discussions with some officials on the possibility of releasing the aircraft. Our sources said on arriving the airport, officials allowed the former governor a secret tour of the aircraft, during which he inspected its consignments. “I was there and I saw him and two airport security officials accompanying him to inspect the plane. I saw the black helicopters and two bullet proof SUVs,” one of our sources said. “I also heard him (Mr. Sheriff) say verbal directive had been given from Abuja for the release of the plane but that authorities of the airport were insisting on written directive.” Mr. Sheriff could not be reached to comment for this story. His known mobile telephone number was switched off for several hours that PREMIUM TIMES called Saturday. He is also yet to reply a text message sent to him. The Manager of the Kano Airport, a Mr. Adamu, told PREMIUM TIMES he is in Abuja and was therefore unaware of Mr. Sheriff’s tour of the detained aircraft. The former Borno governor is a close ally of both the Nigerian president, and the government of Chad – the plane’s final destination. A 2010 Intelligence report by a Nigerian security agency suggested that Mr. Sheriff was personally involved in the recruitment, training and dispatch of Boko Haram fighters, under the full cover of Idris Deby, the Chadian president. Chad is Nigeria’s neighbour. Laying on Nigeria’s northeast shoulder, and sharing long distances of unregulated borders, it is considered a window to safety for Boko Haram fighters. An Australian negotiator engaged by the Nigerian government to bring Boko Haram insurgents to the negotiation table, Stephen Davies, also spoke of how the insurgents named Mr. Sheriff as one of their sponsors during his conversations with the terrorists. Airport officials told PREMIUM TIMES Mr. Sheriff’s verbal pressures to let the plane go was turned down. He was asked to get written permission from “ogas at the top” – authority high up in Abuja – our sources said. After inspecting the plane and holding discussions with local officials, Mr. Sheriff reportedly left for Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, in a private jet at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Security operatives at the Kano Airport had seized the plane when it landed at the facility at about 2a.m. Saturday as a result of technical problems. Crew members of the airplane were immediately detained while investigations continued, officials said. “Security has since been beefed up at the airport in order to ensure proper investigation,” the officials added. The General Manager, Communications, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Yakubu Datti, confirmed the seizure of the plane. He said the pilot sought permission to land at the airport after the plane developed problems. “The plane had a technical problem and the pilot sought (for) permission to land at the airport’’, he said. Mr. Datti said security agencies had since commenced investigation into the matter. Security sources told PREMIUM TIMES the plane was travelling to N’djamena, the capital of Chad. PR Nigeria, an agency known for distributing press statements on behalf of the Nigerian military, later circulated a statement saying the aircraft contained “a chopper tucked in it”. “… Intense investigation is ongoing including using diplomatic means to unravel the mission of the aircraft, its origin and destination,” the statement said. This is the third time since 2009 that planes loaded with arms would be arrested in Kano, our correspondent says. The detained planes were later released after investigations. The destination of the latest aircraft has however raised concerns amid increasing worries in Nigeria over Chad’s alleged role in the Boko Haram insurgency plaguing Nigeria’s northeast. The plane and its consignment was initially thought to originate from Russia but the Russian Embassy in Abuja issued a statement denying ownership of the AH-124-100 heavy military transport aircraft. Air cargo experts describe it as one of the biggest serial and strategic heavy lifters in the world. It is intended for the transportation of heavy and oversized cargo and various special-purpose vehicles. Although in commercial use too, the Russian military is beloved to own 14 of the AN-124-100 version of the jumbo cargo jet, manufactured by the Russian Antonov. http://saharareporters.com/2014/12/07/ex-borno-governor-ali-modu-sheriff-secret-visit-arms-laden-chad-bound-plane-detained |
5 PDP Governors, Godswill Akpabio, Sule Lamido, Isa Yuguda, Seriake Dickson and Liyel Imoke begging former president Olusegun Obasanjo today to support President Jonathan for 2015. More than seven Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors this morning arrived the Abeokuta, Ogun State, hilltop residence of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to persuade him to work for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan in next year’s presidential election. Two of the governors, Liyel Imoke of Cross River State and Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State, arrived Obasanjo’s residence at 12.55 p.m. and swiftly moved into the house without any banters with journalists who were there. The identity of some of the governors could not be confirmed as the registration numbers of their cars were covered. A close aide of Obasanjo confirmed that all the governors were from the PDP and that they came to persuade Obasanjo not to abandon the party at this crucial moment when his support is highly needed. The aide also confirmed that Obasanjo was aware of their coming as he had earlier held a meeting with some of his associates on the visit of the PDP governors. “Throughout last night Baba Obasanjo met with us to discuss the visit by the PDP governors and the position to take. Baba pointedly told us that he remains a staunch member of PDP and that he was not fighting anybody but cannot accept an indicted fellow to be his leader,” It was also gathered that the main purpose of the governors’ visit was to persuade Obasanjo to throw his weight behind the reelection of President Jonathan in 2015 and stop giving tacit support to the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, in its quest to dislodge the ruling party from the centre. The current Nigerian government is widely seen as the most corrupt since independence from Britain in 1960. Ordinarily, this would be a huge problem for President Goodluck Jonathan and his People’s Democratic Party, which has been continuously in power since the end of military rule in 1999. But things are unlikely to change. To many Nigerians, it sometimes seems as if we merely swapped military dictatorship for a one-party state. Mr. Jonathan’s name will be on the ballot this February, when Nigerians, many of them fed up with government corruption and incompetence, go to the polls. Yet events percolating across the country that could come to a boil within the next three months might actually work to the president’s advantage. Two grave problems — the Boko Haram insurgency and tensions in the oil-rich Niger Delta — hang over the land. A third, West Africa’s Ebola crisis, seems to have been contained so far, and though this has little to do with Mr. Jonathan’s leadership, the people responsible for it are unlikely to gain any political capital at his expense. The incompetence of Mr. Jonathan’s government is most clearly seen in its inability to rescue the 276 schoolgirls, most of them believed to be Christians, who were kidnapped by Boko Haram insurgents in the largely Islamic north last April. Even at the time, the president, himself a Christian from the largely Christian south, didn’t seem much concerned about their fate. It took him almost three weeks to officially acknowledge what had happened, whereupon he belatedly invited their relatives to lunch at the presidential villa in Abuja, an event which one journalist likened to “a wedding reception,” complete with bunting and a band. What Mr. Jonathan didn’t count upon was the international furor over the kidnappings or the powerful worldwide publicity, negative in his case, of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign. Seven months later, most of the girls are still missing (though dozens have managed to escape). A report by Human Rights Watch catalogued the “physical and psychological abuse they were subjected to: forced labor, forced participation in military operations, including carrying ammunition or luring men into ambush; forced marriage to their captors; and sexual abuse, including rape.” Meanwhile, sporadic violence continues. Last week, a suicide bomber killed at least 48 students at a boys’ high school in the northeast. Rescuing the girls — or putting an end to the insurgency altogether — would certainly help Mr. Jonathan’s ambitions, but his government’s ability to do so seems most unlikely. Corruption and low morale have hobbled the military. Even so, the government announced last month that the extremists had agreed to a cease-fire, though Boko Haram has denied it. Although the extremists have been widely condemned by leading Muslim clerics and politicians, the insurgency contributes to Christian suspicions of their Muslim compatriots, and this may well play into Mr. Jonathan’s hands come election time. But in an effort to bridge sectarian divisions and garner votes across the religious divide, the country’s leading opposition parties, one from the largely Muslim northeast, the other from the mostly Christian southwest, have joined forces with other groups to form the All Progressives Congress. In theory, this gives the opposition a fighting chance of wresting control of the Senate and House of Representatives from the People’s Democratic Party. Unfortunately, efforts to make common cause in Nigeria are invariably sacrificed upon the altars of religion and ethnicity. The alliance’s likely presidential candidate is a Muslim northerner, Muhammadu Buhari. He also happens to be a former dictator, who ruled Nigeria for 20 months in the mid-1980s. His administration came to an abrupt end in August 1985, when members of his cabinet, alienated by his efforts to root out corruption, forced him out. Though widely unpopular, many Nigerians feel he has the credentials to tackle corruption. Moreover, one potential running mate is Babatunde Raji Fashola, the two-term governor of Lagos State who has distinguished himself by successfully tackling the incipient Ebola crisis with the same energy and efficiency that he brought to modernizing the infrastructure of Lagos, the biggest port in West Africa. But there are also doubts about his commitment to clean government, fueled by the fact that he is a protègé of Ahmed Bola Tinubu, a former governor of the same state and a founding member of the All Progressives Congress whose reputation has been tarnished by corruption scandals, even though he has never been convicted of corruption. Though Mr. Fashola is a Muslim with a Catholic wife, few Christians (or for that matter even the generally more-liberally minded Muslims of the south) would be inclined to vote for a Muslim-Muslim ticket. Religious differences are a key factor in voting, but perhaps patronage plays a greater role, a lesson Mr. Jonathan learned in the Niger Delta, where he taught school and gained political prominence. Like any savvy politician, he knows that patronage is a two-way street, and he has been careful to keep the money flowing in a region plagued by resentment over oil rights, piracy and periodic unrest. Oil is Nigeria’s greatest source of wealth, providing about 90 percent of the nation’s foreign exchange earnings, but many people among the delta’s diverse ethnic groups feel that the central government has seized control of their oil without adequate compensation. The government says it loses about $3 billion a year due to piracy, widely seen as aided and abetted by the military. Local gangs also take what they can by tapping pipelines. In the past, anger over corruption and the unfair redistribution of wealth has fueled a dangerous political militancy. Everyone knows that if the militants want to, they can easily stop oil production, which would bankrupt the country. Thus Mr. Jonathan takes care to ensure that the region is well looked after, and this contributes to his enormous popularity there. Indeed, he is widely seen as crucial to keeping the lid on potential unrest. In the words of Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, a former leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force who is now a key supporter, if Mr. Jonathan is not re-elected next year, there will be “blood in the streets.” Adewale Maja-Pearce is a writer and critic, and the author, most recently, of the memoir “The House My Father Built.” http://www.theheraldng.com/jonathans-government-corrupt-since-1960-new-york-times/ |
