If we don't get paid in the next 24 hours, then there is a big issue.

There are only 4 theoretical working days viz Friday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Practically, anything short of tomorrow means the next administration handles the bag.

People would be concerned with last minute reconciliations, reports and desk clean offs than payment to a bunch of awardees...especially the senior officers in FMF
100% true. if that payment do not reach us by close of business tomorrow, we have effectively entered a very LONG THING. its quite disappointing and very unfortunate that for a program that started in 2013 will be left to another Government to either scrap off or complete.

Youwin 3! awardees we have to hold our heart now. the annoying thin is the lack of communications from Youwin Secretariate. from all indications they have made us to loose confidence too in the payment process too.

we have to come together and make a choice now. we have to do something before it is too late. I suggest we organise ourselves State by State and Start Trekking to Abuja and involve the press to cover it. or we might organize ourselves from all the states and converge in Abuja in front of FMF and start keeping vigil until we are paid.

Youwin cannot bring us this far and abandon us on the road.

Etc

Whilst I agree that government continues (in theory), remember that the appropriation act can be amended and it will....I can bet on that.

Let me ask a question, which is more paramount in the scale of a government, salaries of civil servants or grants and donations?

You said government can never be broke? Seriously?
Appropriation acts are never amended! they are laws and the government must implement. the only thing the new government can do is to bring supplementary appropriation if the current ones does not meet government obligations. Government is a continuum both in theory and practice. we must learn to keep that mindset, The incoming APC government are under obligations to implement extant government policies including the budget, and the president elect (GMB) recently said so when he said nobody should expect anything from his government until october since the 2015 appropriation act was Jonathan's and he was duty bound to implement it. he said APC economic policies will start being implemented after October. I even expect the APC government to expand the Youwin Program and maybe fund upto 3,000 new businesses every year.

on the expenses you listed, those are INEC expenses and were captured sufficiently in 2014 appropriation act and INEC being on first line charge got their money in full. Government is never broke, they have access to several funding options including Loans. The United states Government is currently owing more than 1 trillion dollars in foreign debt. the most important thing is how the economy is managed so that we dont end up like Greece.

Youwin Awardees must be paid all their tranches and i am confident that will happen. Nothing less is expected. i will advise all awardees who meet their milestones to remain hopeful as that much awaited alert will come in soon

Hello CEOs

Tension is unusually high because a new government is resuming in 2 weeks.

In addition, the present government has not been meeting all its bills as when due, largely due to falling crude oil prices, high cost of the 6 week insurgency war and election costs...it is being rumored that vast sums were spent on the elections.

However, as business people, we should be ready for any eventuality...there are two options; either we are paid or not.

Our business strategies should be on these variables.

In addition, we should work on reducing costs to the barest minimum without sacrificing quality or swrvice.

This it the reality of business...not all variables work to plan...what are the exit strategies in place in get out of a negative position?

Whilst we wait earnestly for that life-important credit alert, I would like to advise us to remember to spend the next tranche as if its the last of such funds...before you sign that cheque or transfer instruction, always remember that pay-out can either make or mar the business.

Warmest regards
My brother! the fact remains that the government is not broke and can never be broke. why should the government use public money to fund their campaigns. the last i read the electoral act, Parties fund thier campaign from thier own funds not the government funds. what was spent on elections are what was appropriated for through INEC and i dont see how that affects government business since INEC is on first line charge.

my analysis of the situation is that Youwin funds were appropriated for and no matter who takes over in 2 weeks must continue to fund the program as the appropriation act is law. government is a continuum and the next government is obligated to follow through with extant government policies.

just yesterday contract were awarded to the tune of 30 billion naira for new roads and other construction projects and i don't expect the new government to backtrack on them since government is a continuum. only recently over 156 Billion Naira was paid to oil importers for subsidy claims. so if government can fund it why cant they pay estimated 800 Million to 1 Billion for outstanding Youwin awardees who are in the process of creating jobs and real value in the economy.

please let work together and get our funds and let stop making excuses for non payment or delay in payments, Awardees who meet their milestones must get all their tranches no matter who ascend the presidency (Government is a continuum), we worked very hard for this grant and many awardees resigned their Jobs to pursue their business because they believed in it and also believed in the government. some awardees rented premises for more than 5 months now and its dormant ...they need thier second tranche to start making things work.

900kg is huge! First and foremost, l will want to believe that there is no plant in whatever you want sent down to you because if there is, you will have to obtain a permit from KEPHIS (Kenya Plant health Inspectorate Service).

Sending stuff to Lagos from Nairobi has always been an issue for Nigerians here but bringing in things from Lagos to Nairobi is very easy and costs on N770/kg (freight and custom clearance).

Freighting will be cheaper via Rwanda Air, Send me a mail, highlighting the nature of the materials you want air freighted so l can use it to make a detailed enquiry from Rwanda Air on Monday.
What I want to send down is 1800m2 of 200 micron greenhouse plastic cover materials. I am told it weighs approximately 900 kg! Which is bulky and would be expensive if air freighted.

Can you ask rwanda air the cost of freighting this to Lagos Nigeria? Many thanks for your response and assistance.

Hello. If you read my post well, you will see that I never in any way presented myself as a guru. Of course I'm still a learner and we all can't know it all. Even the greatest of all business men and women still makes mistakes and that is why I always tell people to do their market survey or research well before going into the business.

As for the risk involved, you've said it all. I'm still new and I haven't encountered much. I declared those I faced in one of my comment and there are more as time goes on, I am willing to let everyone know. I have nothing to hide, it doesn't affect me or my business.

Regarding your question on what value I intend adding... I don't have to relate all my future plans to you or anyone. I owe no one that. Trust me, I'm working on them (Personal Project) and when its ready, I will announce it.

Sir, since you are more experienced, why don't you take your time out and give the house a clearer picture of what the business entails. That will do a lot of help.

Thank you sir.
You have said exactly what I want you to say all along! Caveat! You probably do not know the big weight you have lifted from your shoulder.

I know Nairalanders and how they behave, most of them will readily jump into the Onions Business without proper market and risk analysis and will think they will turn to overnight millionaires and when they get their fingers burnt or loss money, they will all flood here and call you all manner of names!

Thank you for informing them you are not a guru and you have only presented what you know for now!

Haba! No where in her posts so far has she claimed to be a guru in the business. For someone who just started the business within 2 months, surely you don't need a seer to understand it's also a learning curve for her too. You are actually the one claiming to have more experience, so why not gracefully share with us all seeing we are green.

Again, you are simply expecting too much from this woman by asking her to explain how she intends to add value to the business! One, she owes no one any explanation on how to run her business or theirs. She has done what a lot of people would not do already; lifting the veil on entering this business; it's your responsibility to do whatever you please with the info she has shared so far. Taking the business to the next level is surely YOUR responsibility. If you feel the need to shed more light, we will all be glad to learn. Please let's not bring in any sense of entitlement here. If anything, she deserves our commendation. Cheers!
No where did I intend to create a wrong impression. I really appreciate what the OP has done, however I was only sounding a word of caution to would be "me too" folks who are planning to jump into the business without proper investigation of the ups and downs involved. You will agree with me that the woman invested a lot of time and efforts before starting up the venture and did her home work properly but a lot of folks like the easy way out and may not put any effort but wants the money to just double in their pockets.

Don't worry in a few weeks time, some people will come and start complaining that the OP mislead them and they lost money, that is why I said what works for one person may not work for the other!

Everybody is now jumping into the onions trade because she succeeded not realising that there are other products that are equally profitable.

The bottomline is that everyone should study the business in relative to their own environment.

Cheers!

It is still too early to say the woman hit Gold mine! She has only done 1 transaction and from my business experience it is not enough to call it a success! That is more reason why people fail in business because lots of folks will jump into the business without proper analysis of the risks and the mitigating factors. If you observe carefully she has been avoiding all the questions I put to her because she knows that I know she is not divulging the full details especially the risks. In a few weeks time you will hear new tales from those who jumped in and are now sweating "Onions".

In every business, there is profit and loss. Sincerely, I haven't encountered much loss except for 2 bags of onions that had issues. Some of the onions in the bags got spoiled though not much as the Alhaji boys still sold it at a reasonable price. The fault was mine anyway because I instructed the mallams not to sell the bags hoping I was going to deliver it personally to some persons on the island which I didn't do and the bags was just there. At a point the Alhaji had to call me to get the permission to sell the bag so that the onions won't get spoilt. One of the risk involved in the business is the onions getting spoilt if it is not sold within a week. That is why I do tell those who called me to do their market survey, speak to the unions or market leaders to get a space not a shop its called LADA, get potential buyers before your onions arrives. That way, your onions don't have to stay longer than the required time except if you are storing it.

Onions has its own season. Presently we are in the season of plenty onions. That's why a onions go for N14,000, N15,000, N16,000 its basically cheap. This season of pleanty onions is between the month of January and April towards the first week of May. The scarcity of onions where by a bag of onions will go for N25,000 to N35,000 in the market is between the month of May to July. This period, a bag of onions in the farm will be sold for N15,000 to N18,000. So those who store their onions now, are the ones that will make plenty profit. If you don't store your onions, and you buy from the farm at the rate of N15,000 or Ñ18,000 a bag, one will still sell it N25,000 or more. July to September is the season of plenty onions, this time the price of a bag of onions comes down. October to December through the Second week of January, there is usually scarcity of onions. This season, the price of onions goes up.

There is no season that is not profitable. The only difference is that the season of scarcity is more profitable with the profit margin of N10,000 or more on a bag.

Onions is always in high demand regardless of the season. Some days ago, napolie and I went to the mile 12 market. We saw close to 7 trailers loaded with onions that arrived from the north. All these trailers will offload their onions in that same market and they will sell it all. Its food and everybody eats food everyday. Some canteen, bucca, restaurant and fast food consumes a bag or more onions a day. What about the boarding schools? Hospitals (Kitchen), Companies, orphanage homes, Events and also in our individual homes. I've seen people buy 3 or more bags of onions at a go. A visit to the mile 12 market will explain more. Anything food sells fast.
I don't exactly agree with you! You are still in the learning curve and it has not completed it full cycle. I have been in the commodity business for many years and I can assure you that there are far more problems associated with the business than you are willing to admit.

For every business there are potential risk factors, you may not know all of them for now because you have not encountered them, but in due course, experience will be the best teacher.

You have painted the business as all rosy and nice, but to be candid many people will not investigate well before jumping and will inevitably get their fingers burnt! What worked for you might not work for others.

Another issue I would like to raise is that, how do you plan to add value to the business because I can see that you are just doing it the way everyone currently does it? What value are you going to bring into the value chain to differentiate your products from the rest of the pack and keep you in business for the long run? Because from my experience "me too" businesses don't last more than 6 Months or at most a year? .

Good morning all.

Like i said in my earlier post everyone will certainly join this business. Why is it difficult for people to sit and think of an idea that will be unique and different. There are many ideas lurking around just sit and think dry fish business, crayfish business these are items that abound you don't have to travel up north to venture into it.

I pray to be a manufacturer and not a copywriter.
Don't worry! As they are jumping in, that is how they will all Jump out. They probably will not sit down to look at the merit and demerit and analyse all the risk factors involved before jumping in.

Certainly Nigerians have a "Me too" business mentality and will all flood in until they realize that all that glitters is not Gold. Business needs perseverance and determinations, how many of all these fellows will withstand the stress factors?

For all those planning to jump in, please tread carefully, do an independent research and make sure the risks are well mitigated before jumping in. There is always a learning curve in every business and you may probably not make any money at first. I am speaking from experience!

Cheers!

Its not been easy. When you rightly know what to do and there are lot of mitigating factors affecting you.
1. Seeds are not readily available to the farmers.
2. Dams are not accessible. The government officials in charge have turned it to personal business.
3. The standard market is not organise. Imagine there is no certification body for fruits and vegetables on the country.
4. The techniques are not available. Tractor mounting implements are not easy to come by.
I believe we will get there in due course. We need individual investors to come in.
The fact is there are no trading standards in the country, which is very bad as it really affects the farmers and the consumers. Farmers receive poor revenues for the products and the middlemen sale bad quality mixed with good quality to the final consumers who pay for it.

Can you imagine in the whole of Nigeria, there is no organised trading company focused on fresh produce in Nigeria with packing houses! The biggest problem farmers face is the marketing of their commodity and most times they end up dumping the goods at the lowest rates in frustration.

Let me give you an instance, a basket of tomatoes which we sold in Abuja for around N3,000 (we actually bought at N1,300 from farmers) is sold for N8,000 in Warri and around N10,000 in Uyo, N13,000 in Bayelsa. So you see, the farmers have no organised company to sell their produce to and end up selling in frustration to the middlemen.

That is where we need agri-businesses to come in, set up packing houses at point of origin, clean and package the produce and effectively distribute them across the country and return bigger value to farmers and consumers.

You are doing a great job. The open market price fluctuates which thereby made it a calculated market. The northerners has been planting with with irrigation and will soon be running out of stocks.
To maximise open market one needs to understudy it.
The best vegetable market so far in Nigeria is the Standard market which we are under utilising.
Keep the spirit alive and weldone
Thanks for your kind word jethro! I really appreciate!

However the way this guys run the show seems a little organised in terms of the farming aspects. For example 90% of the tomatoes in the market are coming out of Zaria with little supply from elsewhere like Kano. However the crop is almost finished and within 2 to 3 weeks the market will move towards Kano which is expecting harvest shortly and they will have more than enough supply to keep the market running for another 2 months before everyone will return to Zaria! Keeping the cycle going!

However when the rains come! Almost all the farmers abandon the tomatoes and grow grains which give them more money. That's why tomatoes are most expensive during raining season!

You should look towards Southern Africa for it. Mostly grown in South Africa and neighboring regions like Malawi and Zimbabwe etc. However be rest assured that it is very very expensive!
