Isn't it interesting when we look at ourselves and affirm that we are not idolaters. That we have no strange God. Is this really true? At this moment in my life, is there an offense against God I seem not to be able to desist from? Is there something in my life at present that I am trying to justify by all means just because I feel helpless to stop? Is there an a sin I take lightly or normal because I can't stop from doing it? Why is this offense difficult to stop, what's at stake? My Job, My relationship, My financial state, My social image, My comfort, etc. Each of these constitute a god to me when to satisfy it comes first before God in my life. When we offend God to satisfy any of these constantly, we often say to ourselves "I will amend my life later", oh brethren, how many are they that have gone to the grave, who did not fulfill their tomorrow plans. Today we are called to look into our lives in this aspect of recurrent sins, from the ones we call venial; to the ones that is keeping us from approaching the Eucharist. "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or unclothedness, or peril, or sword?..." Rom 8:35-

From the gospel: One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, “Which is the first of all the commandments?” Jesus replied, “The first is this: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. MK 12:28-34

The Master had to call the attention of all, this was a very important information, not for just those around him. He had to address the whole nation, "Hear, O Israel"! He shouted. God has to be the first in all considerations, in all decisions, in all actions and even inaction. May the good Lord have mercy on us for the various gods we've made in our lives, and by the fruits of this Lenten season tear us out of these bondage. Remember Syncan in your prayers too.
