The issues with smartphone is that:
1) The sales has continue to slow down year in year out, people don't really need to buy smartphone every year again and Chinese market that happens to be the biggest smartphone consumer has slow down the consumption.
2) It is highly competitive, smaller manufactures are eating deep into the natural space of the bigger boys like Samsung and they are doing it efficiently unlike Samsung and Co. For instance OPPO and Xiaomi does not have base in every country, they do online with limited marketing instead they use referral, this has reduced their cost.
3) Small manufacturers has closed the gap between themselves and big boys like Samsung, their is not much difference so Samsung needs a lot of innovation to differeciate themselves from others which is costing too much and it raising Samsung price over the roof. What insulates apple from this serious competition is the uniqueness of ios and they can't be immune for long, in fact it has started affecting Apple sales in terms of units while revenues is is up because Apple increased the price of their product.

All in all, Samsung is quietly following the path of Sony and LG who have shifted focus to more profitable venture where they are unique and no one can compete with them for now.

The problem I see with many people including you is that we so much depend on western media and western media is filled with repetitive propaganda words so much that it has clouded our judgment more than we want to admit. The reality is west knows their media is good and they use it to fight different power challenging their dominance in different aspect.
For instance if we hear of Russia, what we think is Nation that can't innovate, bad economy, aggressor, lacking behind where as it is opposite.
China a cumunist nation, autocratic government, religious persicutor, lack freedom, intellectual property theft etc where as it is not so. I can mention so many area.

LOL... Filing patents is different from innovation.

If we are talking of filing patents Samsung is the company this year with the highest patents then IBM.

Anybody can file patents. The problem is bringing it to fruition.

Samsung has never been in decline. They made sound in display, graphene batteries, hole in amoled, transparent screens e.t.c

You can't single out Huawei while you close your eyes to Samsung, funny enough Samsung has been convicted more than 8 times in the last 10 years for stealing intellectual property, as at today Samsung still has another $5 billion worth of IP case with Apple in court despite paying close $8 billion to apple for IP theft while Huawei has never been convicted except US 5G war against them.

Apple also stole Sony Ericson design even though Sony did not challenge Apple but Snapdragon is challenging Apple for intellectual property stolen for Apple Abionic chips.

Samsung is the major innovator in the smartphone industry. Most companies look to Samsung for go ideas.

Huawei does not innovate. Huawei has never innovated. They steal Intel instead. And always do and try to claim glory for it.

So yes Sammy is number one for a reason. Innovation.

Sammy has not stolen Intel in the recent years and they don't need to.

You can't just curve a display having not done R&. D. Samsung and Apple spends tons on R&. D but Chinese companies do not that is why their phones are always cheap. When Sammy and Apple price their phones they have to take into account the amount invested in R&. D.

Now for curved displays.. Sammy started it with their first edge phones it wasn't perfect and had its own issues a lot of research was conducted over the years until we had the perfect S8. A company like Huwaei just comes up with no history with curved displays and boom creates one in their recent P20 phones.. Samsung announced an upcoming phone with hole in display and boom Huawei says they are releasing theirs the following month. Sammy announces flexible screens then Boom Huwaei makes same announcement. That was were the employees responsible for selling Intel were caught.

Good thing no one knows yet how to put a hole in display on amoled screens only Sammy.

BTW, the Chinese company that does Huawei's display is called Boe.

The Chinese govt has a law. That their intl companies must give aceess to Chinese govt to use their products at any given time for gathering Intel. I have forgotten what they call that law. You can do a research.

But that is what Trump is fighting.

Although it wasn't that aspect I was speaking on earlier. I was talking on some Samsung employees that were caught selling intellectual properties to some Chinese OEM's recently. This is the reason why Chinese companies like Huawei could copy Samsung's curved display and hole in display tech.

Samsung sacked and sued some of their employees because they were selling Intellextual Intellectual property to the Chinese companies. That was how companies like Huawei could copy their curved displays and even their camera hole in display.

BTW, Apples assault on Samsung was seen as uneccessary and not a case of stealing so apple lost the case. That wasn't even stealing of private intel property.
Samsung has never done anything like that.

Samsung only did in the past what other companies like Apple even do: that is copy a feature and modify it.
