Christianity EtcMURIC Reacts As Muslim Parents, DVC Disagree Over UI School’s Hijab Controversy by jesutakewe(op): 9:30am On Nov 14, 2018
Parents of the pupils of the University of Ibadan International School of different religious belief, including Ifa priests, met on Tuesday to deliberate on the hijab controversy, which led to the closure of the school on Monday.

Members of the Muslim Parents’ Forum, chaired by Abdulrahman Balogun, stormed the school around 7am on Tuesday and distributed hijab to willing students hours to the commencement of the emergency meeting of the Parent Teachers’ Association.

At the meeting, which lasted about three hours, parents charged at each other over the controversy generated by the wearing of hijab to school by some of the pupils on Monday.

A university researcher and herbalist, Awosanmi Abe, who intervened during the session, recalled how the principal of the school prevented his children from coming to the school wearing traditional beads, a decision he accepted in good faith.

A parent, Alhaja Basirat Adeniyi, in an electronic mail sent to the Chairman of the PTA, Dr Kazeem Olaniyan, a copy of which was available to PUNCH Metro, described Monday’s action by her fellow Muslim brothers and sisters as diversionary and a deliberate ploy to create division in the school, stressing that the use of hijab should not be tolerated in the school.

A former Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, UI chapter, Prof. Ademola Aremu, said as a Muslim, he was not in support of the agitation by the forum for the students to wear hijab, stressing that the elite were only employing religion to divide the nation and turn people away from issues that were germane to nation building and the students’ future.

The Chairman of the Muslim Parents’Forum Balogun, who confessed that he authored the letter to the school authority on the need for Muslim students to wear hijab, was booed and shouted down by some of the parents who attended the meeting.

Balogun and scores of other Muslim parents stormed out of the meeting and vowed to pursue the matter to a logical conclusion.

After Balogun and the others’ exit, the meeting resolved that the status quo should be maintained and called on the management to beef up security on the school’s premises, noting “that wearing of hijab will fan the ember of division and insecurity among students.”

In another report by Premium Times; Reacting to the development, the report stated that the deputy vice chancellor, academic, Mr Aderinto, who doubles as the chairman, Court of Governors of the school, said the jungle approach being used by the parents will not be tolerated.

Mr Aderinto said the school was a private institution and not being run from any subvention from the government.

He said the school had its rules governing dress codes, which all parents agreed to.

The deputy vice-chancellor said he held a meeting with members of the forum on Saturday for over two hours after receiving a letter from the group on November 9.

Mr Aderinto, according to the report, said he was shocked and disappointed that the parents could be frustrating the efforts of the management to restore the glory of the school.

“I am the Chairman of the Court of Governors and I am a proud Muslim. The ISI is a private school. The UI does not fund it. It is funded by the fees collected. It is unfortunate that this is coming up now. Even the Parent Teachers’ Association is not aware of the idea of this group.

“I appeal to these people to stop their action and allow peace to reign in the school. It is even strange that this matter was not discussed at the meeting of the Parent Teachers’ Association headed by another Muslim and lawyer, Mr Kazeem Olaniyan,” he said, according to the report.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Mr Balogun expressed surprise that the school was shut down because of the female students adorned in hijab.

According to the report, he maintained that the forum would continue to forge ahead with its agitation until “our daughters are allowed to wear hijab.”

Meanwhile, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned the act of the school.

In a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES Tuesday morning, the director of the group, Ishaq Akintola, said the ban is an invitation to chaos and a threat to girl-child education.

According to MURIC, Mrs Olowe ‘is a failure in administration. She is out of touch with reality. This principal is retarding the progress of UIIS. She can only be an agent of destabilization to have behaved this way.

“Britain and America are encouraging the wearing of hijab in their schools but here we find a school administrator constituting herself into a clog in the wheel of progress, particularly in the area of girl-child education,” Mr Akintola said.

He said a good administrator will consult parents before taking such a sensitive decision and there are a lot of opportunities for her to do that.

“Religion is a sensitive matter. She must have a hidden agenda otherwise she would not have made such an attempt in view of the proliferation of hijab stories in the news. No school administrator worth the salt will issue an anti-hijab instruction in view of recent events around the country unless such a principal is from Mars or Mercury,” he said.

The Islamic group commended the parents who participated in the peaceful protest at the school gate, noting that peaceful protest is an extension of dialogue where there are grievances to address.

“These parents have refused to abdicate their responsibilities. They have a duty to educate their children and to monitor their progress as prescribed in Qur’an 2:233. They have successfully done that. They also have a duty to protect their children from abuse, stigma and religious discrimination.

The Muslim group also urged the university authority to intervene in order to avoid it escalating to serious issues.

“UI is a centre of academic excellence. The authorities should not allow administrative shenanigans and educational charlatans to turn its International School into a centre for religious apartheid. It is high time UIIS realised that Nigerian Muslims have come of age.”

The group said the school principal, Mrs Olowe should resign “if she cannot tolerate the sight of female Muslim children in hijab because she is going to be seeing quite a lot of them these days.”

Lol, I remember that year during NYSC orientation camp; the soldiers blew a FIRE ALARM. It was Pseudo anyway, there was no fire but it was meant to keep us alert. That night I and my friends prepared for the fire alarm and we told our roommates to prepare as well because we heard the soldiers planning to do so (in Hausa).
But the female corpers weren't prepared, they were already fast asleep when the burgle sounded. Come and see how some girls ran out unclad. Some with p*nts, br*, pyjamas etc. We all ran to the assembly point and squated but the girl squatting next to me was on a very stinking and smelling wrapper. You won't believe such a fine girl would be on something so stinky until Fire Alarm exposed her.

Whenever I see a fine girl on make up, I don't admire neither do I fall for her face values. I ask myself, would she be looking as fine as this without make up?

FashionWoman Killed In US Fire After 'waiting To Put Make-up On': SURVIVOR Says. by jesutakewe(op): 10:49am On Nov 12, 2018
A woman who waited to put her make-up on and a disabled man are among the 25 people who have died in California's wildfires.

An unnamed survivor has filmed the moment he revisited the area in the northern town of Paradise, Butte County, where people he knew were killed.

The footage shows four burned-out cars, some of which have the charred remains of people still sat on the seats inside.

Blue flames can be seen flickering inside one of the destroyed vehicles.

The man, who says he was trapped in the area along with the victims, said that he had visited a woman in her house as the fires approached.

He said: "She had to put her make-up on, she died because of it."

The man also revealed that his disabled friend was killed in the fire.

The distressed cameraman said at the end of the footage: "I'm so lucky to be alive, I went down the canyon into a creek."

It comes as a nurse revealed she "thought she was going to die" when her car was engulfed in flames after she evacuated the hospital where she worked.

Nichole Jolly's trousers caught on fire and she lost contact with her husband as she fled to safety.

CelebritiesAn Insider Reveals The Moment Diana Decided To Divorce Prince Charles by jesutakewe(op): 10:32am On Nov 12, 2018
Princess Diana expressed her desire to ‘quit’ the royal family during her famous diplomatic mission to Egypt, an insider has revealed.

In Guarding Diana, re-released in paperback later this month and excerpted exclusively for Robert Jobson’s Royal Podcast, the Princess’ former personal protection officer tells how Diana vented her frustration with royal life as Prince Charles secretly holidayed with his then mistress, Camilla Parker-Bowles.

“Diana knew perfectly well the reason for her husband’s trip,” writes Ken Wharfe, “She knew that he would be meeting Camilla and that they would be enjoying private time together.”

According to the book, co-authored by the Evening Standard’s Royal Editor, Robert Jobson, Diana’s frustration came to a head after press photographers had snapped a now-famous picture of her in a bathing suit during a private swim taken to relieve the stress of “delivering her husband into his lover’s arms”.

Wharfe claims Diana, provoked by the photographers’ presence, told him “I want out of this once and for all”. He says she had been referring not to Egypt but to “being a member of the royal family and the circus that surrounded it”.

Unbeknown to her bodyguard at the time, Diana had already begun preparing “the longest divorce petition ever served in history” in the form of the incendiary book Diana: Her True Story - on which she secretly collaborated with author Andrew Morton.

It was perhaps this, more than the unwanted photographers, which weighed most heavily on Diana’s mind when she let slip her frustrated outburst, Wharfe writes.

“She was well aware that the mother of all rows was about to follow."

TravelCalifornia Wildfires: Death Toll Rises To 31 With 200 Missing. (PICTURES) by jesutakewe(op): 9:53am On Nov 12, 2018
The death toll in wildfires sweeping California has risen to 31, with more than 200 people still unaccounted for, officials have said.

Six more people were confirmed killed in the Camp Fire in the north of the state, taking the toll there to 29.

It now equals the deadliest wildfire on record in California - the 1933 Griffith Park disaster in Los Angeles.

In the south, the Woolsey Fire has claimed two lives as it damaged beach resorts including Malibu.

An estimated 250,000 people have been forced to flee their homes to avoid three major blazes in the state.

With strengthening winds threatening to spread the flames, state Governor Jerry Brown has urged President Donald Trump to declare a major disaster, a move that would harness more federal emergency funds.

The appeal came a day after Mr Trump threatened to cut funding for California, blaming the fires on poor forest management.
What is the latest on the Camp Fire?

Emergency teams have been sifting through the remains of more than 6,700 homes and businesses burned down in the town of Paradise.

The town and surrounding area bore the brunt of the inferno, which started in nearby forest on Thursday.

At a news conference late on Sunday, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said the bodies of five people had been found in their burned-out homes and a sixth was found inside a vehicle. He said that more than 200 people were still unaccounted for.

The mayor of Paradise, Jody Jones, gave the BBC an update on the situation in the town.

"Most of the residential [area] is gone. I would say 90%," she said. "I had an opportunity to go up there and take a look for myself. Just about everyone I know lost their home."

The fire is the most destructive in the state's history and the joint deadliest.

It has burned more than 109,000 acres (44,000 hectares) and is nearly 25% contained, fire officials said.
What about the Woolsey Fire?

The blaze started on Thursday near Thousand Oaks, about 40 miles (64km) north-west of central Los Angeles.

By Sunday it had consumed 83,000 acres and destroyed at least 177 buildings, officials said. It is only 10% contained. The smaller Hill Fire, nearby, has scorched 4,530 acres and is 75% contained.

Some looting was reported in the southern fire area over the weekend and police said arrests had been made.

Luxury homes in Malibu and other beach communities are among properties that have fallen victim to the flames.

But officials warned against complacency, with winds of up to 70mph (112km/h) expected over the coming days. They said fires could spread quickly and unexpectedly.

"Winds are already blowing. They are going to blow for the next three days. Your house can be rebuilt but you can't bring your life back," said Los Angeles County fire chief Daryl Osby.

Meteorologist David Gomberg told the Los Angeles Times newspaper that fire tornadoes were possible.
What do the politicians say?

Governor Brown's request to President Trump was aimed at bolstering the emergency response to what he called the "catastrophic" nature of the wildfires.

"We're putting everything we've got into the fight against these fires and this request ensures communities on the front lines get additional federal aid," Mr Brown's letter said.

Mr Trump's response to the fires has been criticised as unsympathetic and ill-informed.

On Sunday, during a trip to France, he tweeted: "With proper Forest Management, we can stop the devastation constantly going on in California. Get Smart!"

He has previously blamed Californian officials for wildfires and threatened to withhold federal funding.

In a tweet on Saturday, he accused state authorities of "gross mismanagement" of forests.

Mr Brown's spokesman, Evan Westrub, called Mr Trump's comments "inane and uninformed".

SportsSanchez Unhappy At Manchester United Under Jose Mourinho As PSG Show Interest by jesutakewe(op): 8:46am On Nov 12, 2018
Alexis Sanchez is reportedly seeking a move to French giants PSG, despite being less than a year into his £80m contract at Manchester United.

Since being snared away from Manchester City by the United hierarchy in January, Sanchez has only scored for goals for Jose Mourinho's side in 24 appearances.

According to The Times, Sanchez's agent, Fernando Felicevich, has been putting out feelers to potential suitors, which solicited a promising response from the Parisian side. It's not the first time Sanchez has been linked with a move to the French champions, having thought to be PSG's top-target in 2017 until they were alerted to Kylian Mbappé's availability.

The Manchester United manager has reportedly become increasingly disillusioned with Sanchez, and the backroom staff too are said to be aggrieved by the forward's tendency to answer back and criticise Mourinho's tactics.

United's squad are also alleged to be somewhat indifferent towards Sanchez who, like at Arsenal, only speaks to a select few players, instead preferring the company of his two dogs.

Coupled by the Chilean's combative nature on the pitch - frequently demanding the ball, becoming selfish in possession and lamenting his teammates' mistakes - has done little in the way of helping him to settle at the club.

Whether PSG would be willing to match Sanchez's astronomical wage packet at United - said to be anywhere between £350,000-£500,000 per week - remains to be seen. After all, the French champions already have Neymar and Mbappé playing on the wings, although constant speculation lingers over the pair as to a move to Spain.

However, while apparently vastly preferring life in London, Sanchez may well be willing to take a pay-cut in order to relocate to the French capital.

Welbeck required lengthy treatment and oxygen on the Emirates pitch after landing awkwardly when he had gone up for a header in the Sporting box.

And he was carried off on a stretcher with his leg heavily strapped before being rushed to hospital to assess the damage properly.

And Wilson, who holds multiple degrees in sports medicine and has worked for three football clubs, provided a devastating verdict on the potential severity of the injury the England international suffered.

"Injury to #Welbeck. Possible fracture dislocation of ankle which could [be] career ending," Wilson wrote on Twitter.

"Structures within the ankle which could [be] injured [are] the medial, lateral, anterior & posterior ligaments, tibia, fibula & talus bones as well as chondral surfaces. Will need [to be] imaged #AFC."

Wilson then went into detail on the specific tests Arsenal doctors will conduct to assess Welbeck’s injury.

"X-ray will [be] used as 1st line of imaging [to] assess integrity of bones: tibia, fibula, talus, calcaneous & other smaller bones in foot especially - 5th [metatarsal]!" Wilson wrote.

"He will also [have an] MRI within next 24-48 hrs [to] assess soft tissue structures such as ligaments muscles tendons & chondral surface."

Wilson added: "High velocity impact and landing from a height - the forces involved can be comparable to a road traffic collision."

Welbeck’s Arsenal team-mates were visibly shaken by seeing the forward in so much agony.

And Unai Emery revealed they were quick to seek out an update on his condition after the full-time whistle.

"When a player has an injury like that the players look and in your mind you feel for the player," Emery said.

"Then the players concentrated on the match and we forgot.

"When we finished the match the first thing was to ask about him."

Welbeck’s injury means he is definitely out of England’s squad to face the USA and Croatia next week.

Arsenal play their final match before the international break when they take on Wolves on Sunday.

The National Emergency Management Agency has received a fresh batch of 120 stranded Nigerians from Libya - The returnees arrived at the MMIA Cargo Wing at about 9:15 pm via AL Buraq Air - They comprised 29 female adults, five female children, four female infants, 75 male adults, two male children and five male infants The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has announced that they on Thursday, November 8, received a fresh batch of 120 stranded Nigerians from Libya. Channel TV reports that the returnees were received by the acting zonal coordinator of NEMA, Segun Afolayan and other federal government agencies. The agency said the returnees that arrived at the MMIA Cargo Wing at about 9:15 pm via AL Buraq Air were brought back with the help of the International Organisation for Migration.

NEMA further noted that they were brought mainly from three cities of Sabha, Bram Alshati and Oubari. The returnees comprised 29 female adults, five female children, four female infants, 75 male adults, two male children and five male infants. While welcoming them back, Afolayan asked the returnees to make good use of the second chance afforded by the IOM and God Almighty after surviving the dangers of illegal migration. She said: “I was deceived that I would get a better job at Germany as a stylist, there were 20 of us in the team and we were promised that we would fly to Germany but after two weeks, we found ourselves in Niger Republic. After three weeks we were in Libya, Madam told all of us that, we can’t cross over but we have to become prostitutes in order to refund her money which was 1.4 million naira.

“I resorted to fervent prayers and pleaded with madam that it is a taboo in our family to prostitute. I pleaded with her to give another option. I was asked to work at a restaurant and was able to refund her money. “Immediately I finished paying her money, I started working on my own to get some money but my madam organised my kidnapped and I was bailed by her with about N650,000 and she doubled the amount and said that I must pay her N1.3 million. I paid her by doing all sorts of work. I left Nigeria in 2014. I returned with nothing to show for the wasted four years.

“I want to beg those people thinking about travelling illegally to desist. There is nothing better outside Nigeria. ''Is it the freedom to move around, is it the liberty to engage in work without fear of hoodlums breaking into your house and taking away your sweat because there is no banking system for us? We have to keep our cash with us and the boys invade us to take it away. Nigerians should stay and look for better opportunities here please.” Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that one hundred and seventy Nigerians deported from Libya arrived Lagos. The deportees arrived aboard a chartered BURAQ Airline. The flight with registration number 5A-DMG, landed at about 8.25pm with the 171 deportees. The returnees comprised of 70 female adults including 9 pregnant women, 90 male adults, 3 children and 8 infants.
