karlxavier: Goodday Jethro, in your next training, I guess it has the course outline of how participants would construct greenhouse with local materials? I have someone that would want to attend for this training and he also wants to learn that aspect of building the local greenhouse/screen house/Newhouse for the growing of tomatoes successfully under your tutelage. Please reply Currently we are not constructing greenhouse. Its not also in the next batch curriculum. I will suggest he hold on till some other time |

karlxavier: Goodday Jethro,
Please I have some further questions to ask.
What is the sole advantage a greenhouse has over open field cultivation?
Can all the factors be controlled in an open field cultivation just like greenhouse?
I believe open field farm set up would be cheaper than setting up a greenhouse, what does greenhouse have to offer a farmer and his investor? Please reply The greenhouse have the advantage of great reduction in pests because of the protective cover. Yes it can be controlled with good spraying regime and good agricultural practise. Greenhouse gives you better offer in excessive rainy period. Some vegetables especially tomatoes don't like excess water |

Kataw: Thanks ma. Though I've been trying to reach you but not available was the replied. Let me ask this questions then till I reach you on phone; 1. How many roll of mulching film (plastic or nylon) is required for one acre 2. What method of (cheapest) irrigation good for Tomato on one acre and the likely cost. 3. You talked about the MAXIM VARIETY, so what is your observation and conclusion 4. How much is the seed (maxim variety) now? 5. And what is the currrent price of 70kg of tomato Thanks and God bless Though I have attended to this question on whatsapp. But for others to benefit from it 1. I can't say. You have to buy and use it to know the measurement. I don't use plastic mulch 2. Drip irrigation is the best recommended for tomatoes. Though others will work for it. Call 08025171575. He might be able to help 3. Under good agricultural practise, maxim is really very good. I have used it before 4. Talk to 08165535839 for maxim price 5. Please visit Mile 12, Ile epo in Lagos or Sasha and Bodija in Ibadan for the current cost. You are welcome |

karlxavier: Thanks madam. You are a rare gem. One more question, after one comes for the three months training and gets trained on the agricultural practices in growing tomato, can one be selling only to the standard market if his farm is in the western eg, oyo and Ogun?
Assuming one decides to do one acre with good practices, can he be assured of linkage to the standard market? Thanks as you reply madam The standard markets have continue to imports vegetables because the rural farmers could not produce the quality required. Sure. You will be linked to market once you have the good products and can supply consistently because that requires you signing an agreement letter with them to supply all year round |

johnnyblaze424: Thumbs up for the good work you're doing here ma,i have one or two questions i'd like you to help me out with.1. is "roma savana" tomato specie the same thing as "roma vf"??2. is there any selective herbicide i can safely use in a tomato field. (someone recommended"starforce)Thanks No. Roma Savana is not the same as Roma VF. There are several companies producing tomatoes and each tend to give their own specific name which some time might be similar. The two varieties come from different producer. Not sure there is any selective herbicide for vegetables. Your nest bet is manual weeding |

karlxavier: Jethro, please I have some questions to ask.
When producing for standard market, must one use solely greenhouse to produce for the standard market alone?
Secondly, when doing an open field cultivation, can one grow through out the year with irrigation or are their months where u would stop growing?
Thirdly, can open field be used to achieve desired results for the standard market?
Thanks as u answer the questions. 1. No . Its not compulsory you use greenhouse. What the market demand is quality produce. If you can meet that by open field planting, you are good. 2. Yes. You can grow throughout the year depending on the variety of seed you intend using. Some seed can withstand excess rainfall while some can not. 3. Yes. Open field can be use to achieve desired produce for standard market. You are welcome |

The reason why I'm asking this question is that, i want to do the business but I don't have millions. Thanks very much. waiting to hear from you asap. The writers are selling their book. Most of the information there are copied from the internet. Why don't they export and make the money if its that easy? |

remmyjay007: Hi Jethro I think there's a little mix up here... when the spacing is less as in the case of 30cm then you will have more plant stands on any area of land than when the spacing is increased to like 50cm. The smaller the spacing the more the plant stands, and the bigger the spacing the lesser the plant stands. You are right. My mistake. Thank you for this |

Veggiefan: How many tomato stands do you have on one hectare? What is the ideal spacing? Somebody EPP!! So may things will determine the no of plants you have on an hectare The spacing of your farm A 30 cm drip will have more plants than a 40cm spaced drip. Like wise a 50cm space drip will have less plant than all of the previous ones. However the no of tomato plants on an hectare starts from 12,000 plants and could take as much as 50,000 plants based on the spacing |

pragmatistm: I have a small corn farm planted about a month ago. Still very tender.I have just realized that hares have been feasting on the tender plants. Many stems have been cut in their prime.
I can't use the local traps for two reasons. One is that chickens from the neighborhood do visit the farm on continuous basis. Two, I can't be checking the trap daily as the farm is far from where I live.
Nairalanders, please help me out. Blend garlic, mix in water and spray the farm. Its some help They don't like the smell |
