Op no one cares about your country on Upwork. I joined Upwork in January and I got my first job four days after.

Before this pandemic started, I was bidding for a job with a Spanish startup. I wrote some tests involving digital marketing which I passed and then did some interviews over Skype but the job was cancelled. At that moment, I also had other jobs I was bidding for but due to the pandemic they all stopped. The digital marketing niche isn't as hot as it was in January when I joined. Many companies are really struggling and aren't spending as much on marketing.

I have taken a break from it and I am presently learning to code. Would get back to it by the end of this year.

Upwork works very well. The key is to apply to a lot of Jobs. Write your proposals well. Tell the clients how you can solve their problems and the value you can provide to them. Don't start listing your accomplishments. No one cares. Also use the advanced search feature a lot of jobs are hidden there.

Once I am really comfortable with my coding skills I am going back to Upwork. The kind of programming jobs I see continuously trumps everything else.

Yea, it is good to up your skills. About no one caring that isn't really true. When running a Nigerian account, I have had some of my proposals declined for not meeting the client's criteria which happens to be location centered.

But I have seen lots of clients, so I know there is also truth in your claim.

Normally, I send out three proposals a day, and when I am in a roll, two out of the three gets a response. When not, one or none clicks.

However, when running a Nigerian account I had to send about 4 to 6 and sometimes one to two click. One of them was a very good one sha from a Singapore firm clicked with an acemome experience.

I have experimented from both sides just to be sure. But like I said, the data I got is conflicting and that's why I need your input, your experience.

I like to move higher now.

But guess what? The guy hired me out of others.

On upwork, finding a QUALITY freelancer is bigger issue than landing a job.

Most times when clients come to upwork, they're only HOPING for something good. They dont have high expectations but if you can show them you're good then they'll hire you.

As you can see from the screenshot, the reason why the client added that is because of poor grammar or writing ability and not necessarily because Nigerians are scammers.

If you can address his objection and show him/her that you deliver quality work, the least he can do is grant you an interview just in case.


2019 my friend earned $24,000. I personally earned about $15K.

As a Nigerian...

- Your profile must be legit and enticing.

- Make sure proposals are thoughtful and well written.

- Your portfolio should be your most quality samples.

Sure, your nationality as a Nigerian might be an issue at first as a new freelancer, but I believe once you can show clients you are good at what you do, then you'd get great paying jobs. When I started out on Upwork, it was tough. But I kept researching on different ways to be better in terms of my proposals and In terms of my writing.

30 USD for 1000 words isnt something unattainable as a Nigerian. You know what's worse than being a Nigerian on Upwork? It is being one and wearing an hijab. So I could potentially be discriminated on 2 counts: being black and being a Muslim.

But here I am an ordinary article writer still securing 1000 words for 200 to 300 USD. So don't give up!

I am not sure it's just about your ability to convince. I think it also depends on what type of writing you do.

I don't do copywriting, ad copy, and academic writing, for instance. It's possible you might earn more if you do any of those, coupled with your ability "to convince."

Maybe you should up your skills if you love writing or find something more paying and less typing away like data analyst, SEO specialist, etc?

The answer to the bold is "No," and sadly so. While I won't describe myself anywhere near the best in writing, I believe I should be earning way more.

It's the realisation that it doesn't seem like I can get more that's part of why I noted that I have been trying to cut writing time. I rarely bid these days - I have not used up the free Connects Upwork gave me almost a year ago.

The non-native discrimination is real, even though I believe I write better than some natives , let alone the ogas I see here in Nigeria. I have noticed some of those I worked with were actually "middlemen" who probably got jobs on the grounds of being a native speaker.

Strange thing is that non-natives are often able to earn more without complaints when they choose to fake their country. But I don't think I will ever go down that road or I would have long done so.

You are right about earning more with no complaints by faking current region. I wonder how this can be solved.

Some on this thread have put up the idea that you can actually make good cash (eg, $30/hour) using your Nigerian location. It all depends on being able to convince the client with your proposal and profile. What do you think?

For Fiverr, it's about optimizing your profile, arranging your gigs in packages and using keywords.

Well, I have the quality work covered real good, just need the assurance that working from NG location is a good call in regards to securing high paying gigs 24/7 (as needed).

Account was opened and has run from Nigeria since. But I have more permanent gigs direct with some companies so I do Upwork rarely now. But my experience has been that if you are good, the employers are colour-blind. They do not care where you come from.

One of the gigs I do now with a company in Europe involves a team of 5 persons from around the world. I am the highest paid in a team that features two Europeans.

That really says a lot. I have lost two mind-blowing full-time and long-term jobs due to this inconsistency.

This is one of the reasons I have been doing this research more often and need to really know the right path to follow. My hourly rate is $50/hour.

I want to be able to be at my best, exceeding the limits.

Bro, I'd advise that you consider acquiring new skills or fine-tuning the ones you already have to enable you shift to another niche. The data entry category is inundated, more so than the writing category.

I started with web research, data collection, and data entry many years ago. But I had to learn a bit about writing to enable me transition to writing. The competition from the Indians was fierce, in terms of delivery time and cost.

I still do writing on Upwork today, if available. I mostly write how-to's and content addressing specific phenomena or topics (e.g. "What are cash discounting programs?" ). I don't do ad copies and the like because they require more than just ability to write IMHO.

There is competition in writing as well, but I think it's a bit better than data entry.

I have always flown the Nigerian flag and that hasn't really hindered me from getting jobs. The only downside I see, being a non-native, is that you usually get paid less - the more reason I have been trying to reduce the time I spend on such jobs.

However, this country could have told harder on me were it not mainly for those freelance jobs I get now and then.

So, securing jobs is not your issue. The second one is, being paid well for it. Are you able to charge at least $0.03/word for it ($30/1000 words)


About the native speaking. That's another problem. Some Nigerians have native level mastery in either American or British. There are others who are also native speakers by birth, because English is their first and sometimes their only language, even though born and bred in Nigeria.

But I have noticed that some potential clients don't listen or count this variable when looking for Native Speakers.

I think your problems might be the way you're bidding. I learnt to adjust my bids and put customers problems first.

To be candid, it's not easy to get jobs on Upwork has a Nigerian. Clients just want the work done but they are aware of our infrastructural deficiency. It takes extra work to proof you are capable of fixing it within the allocated time. I work on only one niche (data entry and data mining), I give samples and make sure my proposal is tailored towards the job. Still, nothing to show for my time and expenses.

I have been working there since 2018. I got verified last year. Till date, I have earned $130 including Upwork charges. This year alone, I have spent over $30 to buy coins and yet, no job.

Upwork is no play group at all especially for Nigerians.. Nigerian factor is embedded

This is my fear bro. Running with a foreign location might help, but like I said earlier, some clients get pieced when they figure this out and stop working with the Freelancer. Some go as far as reporting them.

That amount is pretty discouraging to be honest. How can someone survive with that?

I don't even think it is something Upwork can fix. What do you think is the way out?

Caveat: I'm Nigerian and on Upwork, but I don't live in Nigeria so I don't know if my advice counts.

From my experience as a black person on Upwork, I get around 1 out of 4 jobs I bid for. So basically, if I want a job I bid for 4.

I charge $35 an hour (I jumped from $7/ hour to $35/ hour after I woke up and realised my worth) and clients have no issues paying me my fees. If they can't afford it then no problems.

You are safe. You can even go as far as charging $50 since you are not in Nigeria, and hopefully in a native English speaking country. ��
