President Goodluck Jonathan has signed the National Biosafety Agency Bill into law, the Director-General of the National Biotechnology Development Agency, Prof. Lucy Ogbadu, has said. In a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Tuesday, Ogbadu said the bill was signed into law by the President on Monday. She described the signing of the bill into law as a milestone in the domestication of modern biotechnology in Nigeria, adding that this would allow the country to join the league of nations advanced in the use of this cutting-edge technology as another window to boost economic development. Ogbadu said, “It will create more employment, boost food production that will put a smile on the faces of farmers and alleviate hunger if given good attention by the government. The National Biosafety Act is crucial in the management of modern biotechnology in the country. “Modern biotechnology has been identified as an important tool that can help countries to achieve food sufficiency/food security, industrial growth, health improvement and environmental sustainability, while the Biosafety Act will give the legal framework to check the activities of modern biotechnology locally as well as imported GM crops into the country as well as providing an avenue to engage Nigerian scientists/experts from different fields to identify and pursue solutions to our local challenges.” She listed the objectives of the law to include harnessing the potential of modern biotechnology under a legal regulatory regime; ensuring environmental, human and socio-economic safety, while harnessing the benefits associated with the practice of modern biotechnology and its outputs; and exercising the sovereign right over all the nation’s natural resources and authority to regulate access to such resources, among others. http://www.punchng.com/business/business-economy/jonathan-signs-biosafety-bill-into-law/

The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, on Wednesday disclosed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has started refunding $1.48bn into the Federation Account as recommended by an audit firm, PriceWaterHouse Coopers. She however did not disclose how much has so far been refunded by the corporation. She also denied reports that she was seeking the assistance of some highly-placed persons in other to get soft landing from the incoming administration of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). Alison-Madueke spoke with State House correspondents at the end of the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. It will be recalled that the Federation Account Allocation Committee on Monday night constituted a committee to find out the reasons for the delay in the refund of the sum. PriceWaterHouse Coopers had in its forensic audit report of the corporation recommended that the NNPC should refund the amount to the Federation Account. The firm was last year hired to carry out the audit following an allegation by the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, that $20bn was not remitted to the Federation Account by the NNPC. PWC had stated in the report that while the total gross revenue generated from crude oil lifting was $69.34bn between January 2012 and July 2013 and not $67bn as earlier stated by the Senate Reconciliation Committee, what was remitted to the Federation Account was $50.81bn and not $47bn. The audit report revealed that $28.22bn was the value of domestic crude oil allocated to the NNPC, adding that total amount spent on subsidy for Premium Motor Spirit was $5.32bn. Alison-Madueke however explained that the unremitted fund was owed by NPDC for a block that had been assigned from NNPC to NPDC. She said, “The PriceWaterHouse Coopers forensic audit that was done a few weeks ago, in its recommendation mentioned that $1.48bn was owed by NPDC for a block that had hitherto been assigned from the NNPC to NPDC which is its subsidiary. “They felt that the right process would be that NPDC will refund that money to the Federation Account. NPDC has apparently started those refunds and it is also in discussion with NNPC and DPR on same. So the refund has actually begun.” While saying that the payment was being done under her directives, she insisted that the sum was not missing but transferred by the NNPC to NPDC which is a subsidiary. http://www.punchng.com/news/nnpc-starts-refunding-1-48bn-to-federation-account-diezani/

APRIL 22, 2015 : FRIDAY OLOKOR, ABUJA 45 Comments Following protests by Nigerians against attacks on foreigners in South Africa, the country on Wednesday announced the closure of its consulate in Lagos. The country’s Consul-General in Nigeria, Sam Monaisa, said this in a statement to the South African Business Forum. According to him, the closure would remain in force until Thursday. Although the situation in Durban has calmed down, he was concerned about the Nigerians that were being repatriated. Monaisa accused Nigerians of “using the social media to blow an already tensed situation in South Africa out of proportion and stoking emotions.” This was why Nigerians believed that their compatriots were being killed daily in South Africa, he said. He warned members of SABF, to stay alert and not move around unnecessarily. South African business concerns and citizens became targets of threats and acts of retaliation whenever xenophobic attacks occurred in South Africa, he cautioned. Meanwhile, South Africa’s cabinet has warned that companies operating in the rest of Africa might be targeted, just as Johannesburg-based Sasol Ltd. announced it was repatriating South African employees working on projects in Mozambique for their own safety. http://www.punchng.com/news/south-africa-closes-consulate-in-lagos-fears-reprisals/ |
A driverless car? Sounds like something from the future! Well, that might be true, but the future is closer than you know. The Mercedes Benz F 015 concept car is the company’s vision of a driverless future. From the outside it looks like something from the future, but it’s based on technology that mostly exist today. The F 015 has inside door panels with web-connected touch screens, turning the car into a shared social space where anyone in the vehicle can interact with it. Watch this video from the New York Times to see how it work: to watch check: http://luxury.24.com/mercs-driverless-luxury-vehicle-of-the-future/
