Yeah, that is the good thing with a system that works you are always given your due irrespective of status. Each time you deliver you get rewarded accordingly. I have high respect for these faculty.

Your BS case is similar to my little bro's own. He did everything including the writing and the supervisor is taking top spot and offering him anything else. Same goes for his classmates. It is sad the system is like that. Only few lecturers care to reward students as they should, though I am still to find any that will agree to give you first authorship space even if you do everything (time, money and what have you).

But, abeg nor sue her oo else she go blacklist u. lol.

Still no need going humble we go still gat kill e-GOAT
at least for you. That is a great accomplishment that no one can deny your resume.

Success in your PhD pursuit broda

imperiouxx: The power behind that was my supervisor. He's hardworking and always tasks us. He wrote everything, yours is to work including on weekend. The one I will author will be in 2015 when more data is collected, my MS thesis write up will be used in it. I started the work and have optimized all the methods for those coming next to play with.

My BS supervisor (in Nigeria) will to be sued one day. She lifted and submitted my project write up and that of 2 other colleagues as her research work. She got credits from it despite the fact that it was our money we used for the experiments. She put her and her hubby names (we paid him for the equipment used in the State Hospital in Ado-Ekiti) as the authors but only acknowledged my name and the other ladies' names as the contributors in the acknowledgement section.... only in Nigeria such is done angry

O boy in less than ,2 publications and one more in the waiting as first author. I trust 9ja boys. Your profile done dey run like the chinko tuf guys own ooh.

For RR you go fear na im neva show e don register e name already na star US dey see so.

On the $$ ur digits many oh. I guess FBI gat dey monitor ur raid oooh. lol. The money go come we go figure that out well within the limit of the law.

Kudos on your exploits we gat kill goat for u oh!

Yeah, true that is the spirit. I believe giving the right system and with diligence on our part we can achieve a lot. That is why I am happy for all those that are there now or leaving for their MS. The sky is the limit as they hit the state silly.
imperiouxx: This is a lovely write up to gear us up but it only addresses the minority. For someone to aspire going for a higher learning I believe such person knows and possesses what it takes. As an example, I spent all the days of my life in my graduate studies on my research. I embraced it with full love like I would do for my life. Well, it pays off, I've collaborated with some members and my professor to published two articles in American protein expression and purification journal.

My thesis was about a new method of evolving highly specificity proteins such as demanded in pharmaceutical and disease related research. When we were submitting the thesis to the graduate school, my supervisor asked that only the topic and the abstract should be published online in the name of the school but not the whole thesis. Why? Because he doesn't want to give out our ideas on what I've done to achieved the increase in binding specificity of the signaling protein (SH3 domain) we focused on. And guess what, he has a big paper coming out on that soon with my name as the main author then his....... his way of getting parts of his money spent on me back cheesy

These are parts of what it takes. Any school I get into later on will only use me to achieve success because when it comes to science and research...... I do it sedulously and wholeheartedly. Though they gonna pay for using my brain and energy. cheesy

Science is in the heart and never in the head.

My name or face may not be in the dailies like that of my brother RR but I'm sure I'm going places in my own kingdom with my well-horned skills in mutagenesis and characterization of protein, and I'm hoping to sharpen the skills more to a professional level someday.... So help me God!

The only thing I'm scared of now is the love of $$$$$$$$$$$ like a phone number cry

TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part5 by JFdENIGMA:
You are all aware that a person’s overall profile is what they reviewed as a total package when you do your application in. This is my little token contribution on research angle of admission to this wonderful thread. At first, I thought it will be going for just a few. I mean with bias for PhD prospective. But after second thought, I have found out that it will do almost everyone good as every faculty somehow have a serious thing for research- they think, say, breath and eat it! It is everything to almost every one of them. So, it is not difficult for you to see a measure of obsession with research in these Professors. Come to think of it, Universities cum Professors are awarded huge sum of money by Government, private bodies and individuals largely for this purpose. They push to make their system research driven as much as possible. I am aware that for undergraduates it is not so important in gaining admission. Well, in the long run it is good for all.

These three things I strongly believe it helps a lot in this respect: research work, research related skills and passion. Do not mind the definition of my three terms; I know it will not go down well with everybody. If you can find a better word just use it to substitute ehm. Mehn, then I will know you truly understand me, lol!

First, research work is lord!
Past research work is lord. Any piece of research you have done at undergraduate or MS level is a piece you can talk about to win an advantage with these professors or admission committee. Others can be independent researches as well as researches done during internship or with companies. It is common knowledge that many things we do here are not fit to be called research at all. I mean some of our project in our University in Nigeria and that is a big letdown, hence it is difficult, if not impossible, to get direct PhD offer in the US with Undergraduate degree from Nigeria and a number of third world countries. Sometimes, it is impossible too with MSc from these countries- as far as I know at least not in top schools without a good research to your bet. Still, it is okay, you did something like your Undergraduate final project and design project, and did your best as much as you could and with the little you had available, you should be proud about it. Try to fine-tune that to reflect what you did - a summary of your work will do. You could summarize it, showing what you did, how you did it, with whom you did it, and the accomplishment. IMO, it is far better than not having anything in there. You know there is nothing to be ashamed of about that and so don't throw, thrash and wash it away. Let the admission committee be the ones to decide if it is of worth. For those that have done MS with good research dissertation you even have a lot more to negotiate for space. While for those going for MS right now especially the ones that have intention to continue a doctoral programme at the end of their MS you should have it mind that research experience will be key. Therefore, make appropriate plan and take actions to do something you will be proud of and that your professor will be proud of too at the end of the day.

Secondly, research related skills like MS Office, CADs and programming et al all count towards your success and are good indicator of your chance of progressing well in the programme overall, so why won't they consider it? You just have to talk about them, and highlight certain situations where you used it before. As long as you know it was germane to your task before, and you see it will be to the ones ahead, mention them. Don't let them go; you will be surprised how great a wonder something as simple as MS Excel in your eyes can perform. It could end up being the most important tool you will need to do an award winning research work in the end. There are different level of sophistication to things, let them know you are open to learning, and that you can adapt and improve. All you need to do is relate task, course project and other situation where you used it in the past. Application always defeats listing! Always keep that in mind. A simple example aid understanding more than thousand theories recited.

Thirdly, Passion is the ultimate juice. Okay, sometimes we are quick and prone to think of how much we have done and that how loaded our resume look is all that matters, that it is all there is. No! That is not completely true! Many of us that have already school in the states would have noticed how people largely enjoy things they do- they try to advocate for individuals doing what they love. You still wonder why Ikenna Azuike guy renounced his good law profession ask TEDxLuanda? It makes living easier and better money is never always the main denominator. That is why you can find a messenger that is so please with what he does. A school teacher that is so happy with his work that would never accept an oil job, a pastor that would not envy politician and demand arm robber earning like senators, a lecturer that would not be dissatisfied with his life simply because he is not an oil worker. Obama earn $400,000 and Cameron 200k pounds (these amount are debateable, you can help us with actual data) and they are not dying competing with the Bill Gates and Warren Buffets of this world. Mind you, there are laws they are obliged to, that guard against excesses anyway. Come to think of it, a professor that is the best in the world can be very emotional about an amateur like you if you are emotional about his research- when you share same passion! Why won’t he, birds of a feather flock together? Ehehn! You need to be able to drink sake with me to be my name sake! Lol. But wait, that is not true- I am sure you know that too well. Talking about your work or interest with passion in your SOP or emails to Professor(Prof-Letting) is a good way to score your point and win them over. Use passionate words like you are wooing her. I am sure 99% nairalanders know how to do that well- how to flirt with her. Only don’t just tell her I like your.... (Whatever you fill in the blank is your own oooh...no be me oh). Just let it be her research and be formal. Okay! Let me stop that now because I’m aware that shidren visit this thread too ooooh.lol! I mean no harm oooh...you understand.

Now my point: know what you want to do, search out professors for interest and their work. Check out the ones that align with yours and tilt your application towards the department, their lab, professors and research. Whatever that is to you, don’t fail to talk interestingly about it.
Remember where these stuffs sell you the most is in your statement of objective which is 100% under your control. Your referee too will say something about you that is why it is important you do well in your research under them as their recommendation will carry greater power even when you don't publish. Also your research course work too is in this class, however a bit down the bottom in the pecking order.

Last words: try as much as possible to publish. I will say it again: ...publish! Discuss the prospect of doing so with you supervisor/advisor and you will see how impressed they will be. Some may try to let you know that it is a very difficult task which can be very discouraging to hear, you have to do your best to show them that you are not only mouthed and that you are not going to drop off easily that even if it doesn’t get to that point you will still be very committed to doing an excellent job with your research project. You will soon find out the truth that diligent men always dine with kings. In this sphere same rule applies. If you have your undergraduate study and/or Msc in Nigeria here, and you think you did something worth publishing you can discuss with your supervisor and you will be surprised that they may allow you if they have a thing for research- even if it is in local journal just try and make sure it something that can be accessible to your prospective buyers. Buyers! lol- I mean schools. And don't worry you will be fine.

NB: It becomes even extremely paramount when you are competing for fully funded PhD which is more difficult than MS and PhD without funding. It behooves on one gunning for funded PhD admit to work to improve his research status. Perfect score in GRE and ACAD is never enough.

Thanks for taking your time to read my boring post. I woke up this morning and wanted to write. I hope it helps? See you in the New Year!

I feel I owe this house a beef, sorry, I mean a brief after receiving my GRE score.

GRE: 309(Q155, V154) AW:3.5. I prepared leisurely for it like three weeks. My 1st Power Prep try before preparation was like 300-303
I intend applying to:

1MIT*
2CalTech*
3Yale
4T Austin
5TAMU
6MSU
7LSU
8. MI(UAE)

I sent my scores to 4, 5,6,7 on test day. For 1 & 2 I think I made mistake in my approach when I contacted them so I may take out 2. I may add Houstein in, I may also apply to University of Edinburg and Toronto depending . All things remaining as they should I will complete my application before the end of this coming week.

To add to what recent and past test takers in this house and in the old thread on GRE Preparation have been saying about materials. I will only like to add that your also consider RS Argawal quantitative material. I was opportune to use it for a day or two. It will help

Last: Schools that evaluate transcript themselves any clue on the method they use if they USE WES. I mean will it b favourable.

THANKS HOUSE!!
