SOME students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, have expressed worry over the large population of ceaseless migratory fruit bats, which had been living in various parts of the university community, including academic areas, for decades.
The university re-opens on Sunday, August 24.
Bats are one of the primary sources of contracting Ebola and the fruit bats are members of the Pteropodidae family of bats, which act as pollinators and seed dispersers and are said to be found in primary or maturing secondary forests.
One of the students, Sodiq Oyeleke, on Wednesday, captured the panic being expressed by his colleagues on the possible temporary shutdown of the school by the Federal Government, in an effort to stop the spread of Ebola.
In an article posted on www.oaupeeps.com, a news blog for students and alumni of the institution, entitled: “Another OAU Shutdown Beckons: We May Return Home Soon,” he enjoined his colleagues to refrain from spreading rumour about the possibility of the school being shut again.
Before the article, students of the university had, on social media, expressed panic over the announcement of re-opening of the school, which was shut in July over protest on tuition fee hike.
“If care is not taken, we will be sent home again, not by the school management but by the Federal Government because of Ebola. We have not resumed fully and students have started creating panic about Ebola on campus,” the article read in part.
But, reacting to the presence of bats in the institution, during a telephone conversation, on Wednesday, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the institution, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, said “the bats on OAU campus have been there for decades,” adding that “despite the large concentration of bats here, we have never experienced any outbreak of any disease over the years - much less Ebola.
“If the bats here could transmit Ebola, then we would all have long been dead. If despite the large concentration of bats, the Ebola case in Nigeria was not discovered here, but in Lagos, why would we have that problem now?
“We are all loco-parentis (surrogate parents) here ourselves. If we have any reason to believe that it is not safe for them (the students), why would we invite them to resume? Those fears are baseless. There is no cause for alarm.”
On whether the insitution is considering cutting down the trees that harbour the bats, as a precautionary measure, Olanrewaju asked: “How many trees do you want to cut down?” adding that “there is no cause for alarm.”
The management of the university had, in a statement on its website, said: “In view of the colonisation of the university estate by migratory fruit bats, members of the university community and their dependants are hereby strongly advised to avoid all forms of contact with bats.”
The authorities issued an alert to those within the premises of the institution to avoid “touching, holding or eating bats,” as well as “avoid pathways through which they may come in contact with the faeces/droppings of the bats.”
Meanwhile, in a press release signed by Olanrewaju, the Senate of the university had reconvened on Friday, August 15, to announce the re-opening of the institution. http://www.tribune.com.ng/news/news-headlines/item/13943-ebola-oau-students-express-worry-over-bat-population-as-school-re-opens-sunday-no-cause-for-alarm-mgt

ah dey your service o my boss... Whilst at home, I traveled, play, see cool cartoons -hd n' 3d, listen to batches of tracks write like on daily basis, but 'read' ah read natin...jare... I wan safe all the readings till ah don't know...

Ya, lemme take this time out to tip in this tit-bit, on that campus, try and understand your own very method of readin', studin', searchin' n' or researchin'... Don't copy e.g oluwatola5 etc cos she studies only just in the daylight whilst you are good at studing at night or burning the mid-night candle, try and understand past all day reading or studing,... Understand each lecturer or professor and a good percentage of the topics they teach, don't vex 'em o... But pray for God's grace much more than any of these, only God can surprise one on that campus, brilliancy and all that can't really... These are little of the things my friends and post graduate friends on that campus had told me... Sincerely yours... wink

okey-doke bro, don't lemme quench your airtime, I would love helpin' via here so that if there are more candidates that are in the same state as you are just now they too can know the way out...
The solution is straight, when oau resumes, go.immediately to the campus - to the senate building - to the admission office and you tender your complaints and make sure you receive satisfying assurances that all is gonna be well before leaving the campus..., but most importantly, you pray zealously your luck leaves with you to that campus cos hmmn, oau can be funny and they are f*ckin'insane either... Last year I went through hell, the swapping was kinda jammy cos I beat the merit for my first and second choices and I chose oau as so too... Thanks.

Mikkie31: narcotics to be precise. Drugs that are medically termed dangerous and harmful. U know, those types that could make one loose his/her sanity.
hmmmmn... Really a good topic you've cooked up bra... I have been to such peppering soups before and made it out... Yes, it can't be funny nor easy to just stop relating abruptly with something or someone you can't do without, but the mo your conscience sets you free (that if you have a good heart/conscience)then you let her go and don't pine too much cos of so... Life rolls on as long as the breathe of life lives on... If she keeps threatening she NEED'S to go, cos that is what is gonna make her so very happy in life, then let her go since it is the same happiness you have always wanted for her, you know tying her down would amount you do not want good things for her or you love seeing her all time sad... Then you begin to rebuild your heart from where it has fallen... It is not gonna be jammy, something like such was never meant to be jammy to sail through but you sure will and some better partner/girl/boy would loom in before you read A B C...
I have never taken hard drugs before, and pray not to till I die with my big mouth opened perhaps... So to me it all depends, it depends on how strong you are... But, to me, the pains of the heart is far painful than when the head is guillotined...,man, it is the heart we are talking about but when it so happens, one must still keep his sanity straight, or else that becomes the beginning of the end of such head... God help us guys...
EducationRe: The Obafemi Awolowo University Admission Thread For 2014/2015 Academic Session. by Jodekss(m): 7:12pm On Aug 03, 2014
Meeeeeeeeeerrgin bawo nau, stop saying that nau nau ehn nau ah mean it nau yes, see, lemme yan you one shenwele fact, that senate building on the campus you all are lookin' at do not know the meaning of margin abi na merging; let alone discussing am nau... No meeting is said to be held on mergin and none has... So it is you people that are busy troubling your gentle and jejeli-going brains with the word Merrrrrrrging o... Adios...wink It is just not f*ckin' possible... And cos it happened then doesn't mean it must now... It is some mere internal strike and it is ending sooner... In fact, Omole is kinda regreting his moves in his loo just now... Well, I do not blame the senate building really for the increment really though it is painful, so painful to have the fees packed up into one piece by my parents to make the payment but the fact is, one of the major sources oau derives his financing capital is this Post jamb ish... In years afore, 60000+ candidates do used to come to sit the exam but these days ehn, da thing don nosedive dramatically to some pooh-pooh figure... Now they can't derive billions anymore from post jamb but little millions... Imagine, last year, we were 12000+ that sat the exam , this year's was just of tiny-dots improvement... The school authority would never lament so being a very arrogant varsity.
Forgo mergin' kia fellas and pray we resume on the election day in the stead at worst... wink

ueskman: success all the way to every Oau aspirant that is qualified to sit tomorrow's exam.

just take the exam for fun, nothing special.

Try to eradicate the FEAR factor and install GOD factor

once you're done, have the intention that the next exam you're sitting 'll definitely be part 1 exam..

as my friend jodekss 'll say 'when you're not afraid of failure, failure 'll b afraid of u causing failure itself to fail'

lastly, have your writing materials ready don't distract others and don't give room for distractions.

just be DETERMINED, CONCENTRATE and BELIEF, I promise these 3 factors 'll give birth to SUCCESS.
yo, you have said it all ueskman... God grace all of you ace through in the exam... Go have it done and jubilate in Jesus's name... Much love...
